ACC and Very Large Texas Community Colleges - THECB Almanac 2013 Data
The Austin Community College District (ACC) is the primary gateway to higher education and training for residents in a 7,000-square-mile area in Central Texas. ACC is among the fastest-growing community colleges in the country, providing access to valuable programs and services that change lives and benefit communities.
This report summarizes key characteristics of ACC and its peer institutions as reported in The Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) 2013 Almanac.
General Enrollment Characteristics
• In fall 2012, ACC was the sixth largest community college among the ten very large community colleges in Texas (40,159 students enrolled in credit courses).
• Austin Community College serves more part-time students (80.5%) than its peer institutions in Texas.
• Austin Community College serves a larger percentage of students in technical programs (41.2%) than its peer institutions in Texas .
Successes
• ACC’s six-year transfer rate for students enrolled in fall 2006 (28.9%) is the second highest among its peer institutions in Texas.
• ACC’s six-year graduation rate for first time, credential seeking students enrolled part time (24.1%) is the highest among its peer institutions in Texas. ACC’s six-year graduation rate for full-time students (32.0%) is among the highest rates which range from 32 to 34 percent for peer institutions.
• ACC has the highest percentage of recent technical program graduates who are employed (77.5%) compared to its peer institutions in Texas.
• ACC has the second highest rate, among its peers, for first time in college students below reading standards meeting TSI (Texas Success Initiative) obligations within two years (71.4%). ACC has the fourth highest rate for students below reading standards successfully completing a college-level reading-related course within three years of enrollment (36.7%). ACC has the fourth highest rate for students below math standards successfully completing a college-level math course within three years of enrollment (14.5%).
Challenges
• ACC ranks ninth among its peer institutions in degrees and certificates awarded in 2011-12 (2,609 awards).
• ACC ranks tenth among its peer institutions in three-year and four-year graduation rates for 2011-12 (3-year rate: 4.6% full-time, 2.1% part-time; 4-year rate: 8.5% full-time, 4.6% part-time) .
• ACC ranks ninth among its peer institutions in average attempted credits to complete an associate degree for graduates in 2011-12 (101 semester credit hours [SCH]).
• ACC ranks tenth among its peer institutions in average time to complete an associate degree for graduates in 2011-12 (5.7 years).+
