What is Classical Music?
What’s the difference between an RSO Classics
Series concert and a Pops Series concert?
The RSO offers two different types of concerts
during its season: the Classics Series includes six
different classical concerts that feature the full RSO
orchestra as well as a smaller chamber orchestra at
the different church venues. The Classics Series
has a combination of famous pieces of classical
music you may know combined with music you may
not have heard before, but that conductor Steven
Larsen has specially selected to share with the
Rockford community.
On a Pops Series concert you're more likely to hear
classical music that is more “popular” in the
everyday world. Perhaps it is music from the
movies, holiday music, or things you may have
heard in cartoons or other commercial places. Pops
concerts are more likely to have a theme to them,
for example this year’s “Magical Music of Disney”
concert.
What is Classical music?
It’s difficult to define something so vast, but one
simple way to think of it is music performed by an
orchestra, choir, or both. This even includes modern
movie music! Classical music as a whole is divided
into time periods by those who study it. The four most
prominent time periods are:
Baroque era, 1685-1750
Famous composers: Bach, Handel, Vivaldi
Classic era, 1750-1830
Famous composers: Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn
Romantic era, 1804-1910
Famous composers: Brahms, Tchaikovsky
20th century, 1901-2000
Famous composers: Mahler, Stravinsky, Bartók
Anything composed after 2000 is considered “modern” classical music. This season at the RSO you will hear music from each of the four prominent time periods performed.
Compositores famosos: Bach, Handel, Vavaldi
Era Clásica, 1750-1830
Compositores famosos: Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn
Era Romántica, 1804-1910 Compositores famosos: Brahms, Tchaikovsky
Siglo 20, 1901-2000

Sections of the Orchestra The orchestra is made up of four sections, each with a family of instruments that are related. Blended
together the four sections create a unique and rich sound that we know as a symphony orchestra.
Violin
Horn
Drums
Bells
Marimba
Timpani
Triangle
Gong
among
others
Bassoon
Clarinet
Tuba
Viola
Cello
Oboe
Flute

Sections of the Orchestra
The String Family
String instruments use vibrating strings to make
their sound. The strings are stretched across the
hollow body of the instrument and plucked or
played with a bow. The pitch is changed by
shortening or lengthening the string, or by
adjusting its thickness, tension, or density.
The Woodwind Family
Woodwind instruments are made of long hollow
tubes of wood or metal. The sound is made by
blowing air through a very thing piece of shaved
wood called a reed or across a mouthpiece.
Finger holes along the instrument are opened
and closed to change the pitch.
The Brass Family
This family of wind instruments is made of metal
with a cup-shaped mouthpiece. The player
creates a vibrating column of air inside the tube
of the instrument by pressing his or her lips
together in the mouthpiece and forcing air out
between them, as if they are making a
“raspberry” sound.
The Percussion Family
Percussion instruments are probably the
oldest musical instruments and include drums,
bells, cymbals, or any instrument that is struck
by a hand, mallet, or stick to the make a sound.
Because of this definition, the piano is actually
included in the percussion family. Some
percussion instruments produce a variety of
sounds that can be tuned such as marimba,
timpani, and xylophone. Others make only one
sound that is controlled by the size and shape of
the instrument. Percussion instruments are
made out of a wide range of materials including
wood, metal, and animal skins.
animales.

the Romantic era
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 – 1893)
⇒ How to say it: “Tchaikovsky” is said like
“Chii-cough-ski”
⇒ Born in Vokinsk, Russia
⇒ Famous for his Romantic era ballets
“The Nutcracker” and “Swan Lake”
The RSO is opening the 201516 season with
Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 and closing the
season with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.
Brahms and Tchaikovsky lived at the same time
and actually knew each other – they were
introduced at a party in 1888 by Edvard Grieg,
another composer you can hear this season. They
also shared a birthday – May 7 – though Brahms
was seven years older.
Brahms and Tchaikovsky liked each other
personally when they met, but did not like each
other’s music. They approached composing music
very differently. Brahms was a conservative
composer who wrote in established genres.
Tchaikovsky, on the other hand, wrote more
emotional music. Ironically, Brahms was the louder
and more sarcastic personality, while Tchaikovsky
was more shy and private as a person.

Mozart and Beethoven
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)
⇒ How to say it: “Mozart” is said
like “Moat-zart”
⇒ Born in Salzburg, Austria
⇒ Wrote over 600 pieces of music during
the Classic era
Mozart was a child prodigy—he could play
the piano well at just three years old and
started composing when he was five. One
of his many talents, in addition to
composing and performing, was that after listening
to a piece of music just once he could write it down
from memory without any mistakes. Mozart was just
35 years old when he died from a fever, with his
wife by his side.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827)
⇒ How to say it: “Beethoven” is said
like “Bay-toe-van”
⇒ Born in Bonn, Germany
⇒ Beethoven’s music transitioned the
world from the Classic era into the
Romantic era
Beethoven’s music may be some of the
most recognizable in history. In addition
to being a composer he performed as a
pianist and conducted orchestras. Beethoven
hoped to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
but instead ended up having another famous
composer, Joseph Haydn, as one of his teachers.
Later in life Beethoven became completely deaf
and couldn’t hear his own music. He was unable
to perform, but his deafness did not stop him
from composing.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)

Strauss and Wagner
Richard Strauss (1864 – 1949)
⇒ How to say it: “Strauss” rhymes with
“house”
⇒ Born in Munich, Germany
⇒ Romantic era composer who lived
through WWII in Germany as a famous
composer and conductor
Strauss is arguably one of the most
talented composers who ever lived, and was
incredibly smart. He enjoyed playing the difficult
card game Skat—saying it was the only thing
complicated enough to turn off the music in his
head. He often wrote programmatic music, which
means the music told a story. This makes his
music easy to use as film music.
Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883)
⇒ How to say it: The “W” sounds like
a “V” - “vog-ner”
⇒ Born in Leipzig, Germany
⇒ Most well-known for his dramatic
operas, written during the Romantic era
Wagner is an example of the contrast of
limits of the human personality. He wrote incredibly
beautiful and powerful music, and yet was known
as a unpleasant person to spend time with. He is
well-know for his dramatic operas that are all very
long (the longest is five hours). During his time, his
music was controversial because it very different
from the music that other composers were writing.
He was married to Cosima, the daughter of
another famous composer, Franz Listz.

⇒ Como se dice: “Strauss” rima con

⇒ Nació en Munich, Alemania
⇒ Compositor de la Era romántica que vivió
durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial en
Alemania como un compositor y
conductor famoso.
compositor famoso, Franz Listz.

Bach and Handel Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
⇒ How to say it: Rhymes with “rock”
⇒ Born in Eisenach, Germany
⇒ Composed during the Baroque era, and
arguably the most influential
composer of all time
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
⇒ How to say it: “Handel” is said like the
word “handle”
⇒ Born in Halle, Germany
⇒ Most famous for his piece “Messiah”
composed during the Baroque era
Both Bach and Handel composed music during a
period in history known as the “Baroque.” This
period in history was very influential in the way we
hear music today. During the period, composers
and performers used more elaborate musical
ornamentation, made changes in musical notation,
and developed new instrumental playing
techniques. Bach even invented the modern tuning
system of western instruments.
J.S. Bach was a Lutheran and worked for the
church for most of his life. He was known for his
improvisation skills at the keyboard. Bach was
married twice (his first wife died) and in total had 20
children, 10 of whom survived to adulthood.
Handel was born in Germany, but moved to London
permanently in 1712, where he was immensely
popular. Handel never married, and kept his
personal life very private.

⇒ Nació en Halle, Alemania
⇒ Más conocido por su famosa pieza
“Messiah” compuesta durante la Era
Baroque
popular. Hancdel Nunca se casó, mantuvo su vida
personal muy privada.

After the Performance We hope you enjoyed your experience at the
Rockford Symphony Orchestra! Here are some
answers to questions you may have after seeing a
performance. Have more questions? We’d love to hear
from you! Contact us at 815.965.0049 or
How do the string players know when to move
their bows up and down at the same time?
The sound that is made when a bow moves up or
down on the strings is slightly different. Markings
called “bowings” are written into the music of the
string players so they are all moving and playing at
the same time.
What is a concertmaster? What are his/her
responsibilities?
The concertmaster is the lead violinist. As the
violinist with the highest “rank”, he/she sits in the
first chair, next to the conductor’s podium. The
concertmaster leads the orchestra in its tuning prior
to the concert, and customarily plays all of the violin
solos within pieces. In addition, the concertmaster
marks the orchestra’s scores with the appropriate
bowings.
Why does the orchestra always tune to the
oboe?
Circumstances of history, mostly, but also
acoustics. The first orchestras (in the late 1600s)
were mainly string instruments. A pair of oboes was
sometimes used to strengthen the first and second
violin parts. The bright, rather penetrating sound of
the oboe was easy to hear, and its pitch was more
stable, so it was natural to rely on it for tuning.
Here’s a little secret you’ll never know as an
audience member. Oboes can play sharp or flat, just
like any other instrument. But now days every oboist
uses a little electronic meter to ensure that their ‘A’
is exactly right. In fact, some orchestras – even
major orchestras – have gone ‘modern’ and use an
electronic device to sound the tuning note. Even
then, tradition is respected: it’s the oboist who turns
the device on for tuning, and off when the task is
completed!
hecho algunas orquestas – incluso orquestas
