Studies show number of US medical students with disabilities grows, but disparities continue "Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers report that the number of disabled students admitted to U.S. medical schools rose from 2.9% to 4.9% over the last three years. However, the percentage of NIH- funded researchers with disabilities declined between 2008 and 2018. The grant success rate for this group was lower than for researchers without a disability, indicating that despite more people with disabilities prepared to enter biomedical research, their prospects as professionals are weakening." How Algorithmic Bias HurtsPeople With Disabilities

"In hiring, for example, new algorithm-driven toolswill identify characteristics shared by a company’s

“successful” existing employees, then look forthose traits when they evaluate new hires. But as

the model treats underrepresented traits asundesired traits to receive less weighting, peoplewith disabilities—like other marginalized groups—

risk being excluded as a matter of course."

High rates of unintendedpregnancy in women with

disabilities

"New research indicates that unintendedpregnancy is much more likely in women with than

without disabilities. Research in the generalpopulation indicates that outcomes for both motherand child are better in intended pregnancies, and

that may be especially true for those withdisabilities, who may have complex medical

situations and require additional care."

Passenger disabilitycomplaints about flights on

the rise

"Airline passengers with disabilities say flight staffneed more training and the airplanes need better

accommodations to meet their needs, according totestimony during a House subcommittee hearing

Tuesday. Their concerns were part of a discussionabout passenger experiences with airlines.

Testimony was presented from a recent report bythe U.S. Government Accountability Office that

said the number of passenger disability complainsreported to the U.S. Department of Transportation

and to airlines directly have steadily increasedsince 2011."
