Low Density. Our estates are set on large lots that provide a large

area around the house which is not developed and promises

privacy and intimacy to the individual dwellings. This enables us

to keep the natural look of the land.

site Development. We develop our land in a responsible way that

takes advantage of the natural terrain. We are thoughtful when

deciding where roads are going to be and where houses will be

located. Our designs for the homes were created to fit the natural

terrain where minimal grading and site work was required. We

did not remove any large trees but made sure to integrate them

into our design of the land. We also made sure not to interfere

with the natural springs and the protected areas.

Water efficiency. Our water is provided from on site wells that has

been tested and approved for quality of the water.

are specifying local resources and materials to be used in our

resort. By doing so we minimize shipping and we reduce our

carbon output. We use local labor for the services we provide to

playa ostional

Playa Ostional is just minutes from Kalia’s

Black Beauty Village. Many of the Black Beauty

residences offer spectacular ocean views off

the highest front line ridge from this beach.

Playa Ostional has some of the smoothest,

most consistent waves in the immediate area.

Averaging about head-high, with periodic

swells bringing the expectant larger waves,

it’s an excellent place to learn to surf and yet

interesting enough to attract surfers at all skill

levels. It also offers unbelievable sunsets for

those looking for romantic sunset walks on the

beach. The area has been designated a natural

refuge for one of the world‘s most important

nesting sites for the olive ridley sea turtle.

A significant proportion of the world‘s Pacific

ridley turtle population nests at Playa Ostional,

coming on shore en masse for up to one week

at a time from July–December (peak season is

August and September, starting with the last

quarter of the full moon), and singly or in small

groups at other times during the year.

Playa Azul is close by Kalia‘s Ruby Sky Village and is

named for its mile-long stretch of dark, almost cobalt blue sand

and azure sea. Visitors can wander the pristine and solitary beach,

listening to the Howler Monkeys and watching the wave‘s crash

against the shore, and they can watch spectacular sunsets light

fire to the sky.

playa guiones

A lovely light sand beach, Playa Guiones is among the best

surfing destinations along the Guanacaste coastline on the

Nicoya Peninsula. Backed by a lush jungle, the first couple of

hundred meters of this beach are part of the Ostional Wildlife

Refuge, while the beach area itself has received a ‘Bandara Azul‘ or

Blue Flag of Ecology for being among the most clean, pristine

and ecologically well-maintained beaches in the world.

playa san juanillo

Playa San Juanillo is actually a series of small, mostly protected

coves a short drive from Kalia‘s Ruby Sky, Emerald Woods and

Black Beauty villages. The primary cove is a white sand beach

protected by a rim of rocks and reef. Here the water is calmer

than most other beaches on the entire peninsula. This makes for

very pleasant swimming and much better snorkeling than many

places on the Pacific Coast.

playa marbella

A beautiful beach famous for the more skilled surfer and a great

place for romantic walks on the sand. Stop by and visit the beach

front restaurant, Tiki Hut. Ask the Concierge for directions. This

beach is close to our Emerald Woods Village.

nosara wildlife rescue educational tourThe Nosara Wildlife Rescue and Sibu Sanctuary is a once in a lifetime experience for those

interested to learn more about the beautiful animals that live in this part of Costa Rica. As a

matter of fact, many of our guests say this was one of the most memorable parts of their trip!

We encourage everyone to visit these facilities and learn about the animals and the challenges

they face today. Below is a letter to our Kalia guests who are interested to visit both the Nosara

Wildlife Rescue facility and Sibu Sanctuary.

Hola,

This informational introduction describes both portions

of the Nosara Wildlife Rescue Program, Sibu Sanctuary and

Refugio Animales de Nosara.

This important program is funded completely through

donations and gifts from the public. We receive no

government or NGO funding. You are invited to become a

patron of Nosara Wildlife Rescue, with your donation of as little

as $50 per adult or $25 for children under 10. For your kind

support you will be given a private guided educational visit

to the REFUGIO ANIMALES or SIBU SANCTUARY, we hope you

will choose to visit both. Visits are conducted by advanced

reservation only and will last 1.5 – 2 hrs. We are sorry for any

inconvenience but we are not able to accept donations to

Nosara Wildlife Rescue by credit card or personal checks.

We need to ask a couple of questions and provide you

with some additional information in order to set up your visit.

• Have you been in-country at least 4 days and is everyone

in good health, no colds or flu?

• We conduct visits at the Refuge at 10:00 am, and at the

Sanctuary 10:30 am, Monday through Saturday

• We will need to know the size and composition of your

group, adults and children.

• If there any children under the age of 16 we will only be

able to offer visits to the Refuge not the Sanctuary and will

need to know their ages.

Nosara Wildlife Rescue is not a Zoo and is actually two

separate facilities, Refugio Animales and Sibu Sanctuary

who share a common mission: to rescue injured, orphaned,

and displaced wild animals. Nosara Wildlife Rescue provides

them immediate medical care, rehabilitation, and eventual

release into the wild. Animals unlikely to survive in the wild

receive attentive, long-term care. We are also educators and

advocates who work cooperatively with other organizations to

encourage respect for animals’ lives and preservation of their

habitat. Our work is complementary, but different.

Refugio Animales de Nosara rescues all types of wild

animals that have been injured, orphaned, or displaced. Howler

Monkeys are their specialty. They provide immediate medical

attention. They also feed, shelter and provide ongoing medical

assessment and treatment in a safe environment. The very

young animals are often kept at the Refuge until they reach

approximately 2 years of age. The Refuge also provides ongoing

rehabilitation of the animals with assistance from veterinary and

wildlife specialists and work very closely with the Ministry of

Environment & Energy (MINEA), and other agencies involved in

wildlife protection.

SIBU Sanctuary receives animals in stable condition to

enclosed habitats within the jungle to reintroduce them to

their natural setting, while providing ongoing rehabilitative

care in the secure jungle enclosure. After a quarantine period

the animals are introduced to a stepped-down, secure habitat

with an open canopy, enabling them to begin experiencing

life in the wild again. After a period of orientation animals that

are healthy are set free to live and survive on their own in their

native habitat. Those that are unable to be released are provided

a permanent enriching habitat for their long term care.

Because the animals come first we have a limit on group

sizes, frequency and at the Sanctuary a minimum age of 16 for

visiting children. The minimum age at the Refuge is 6 years of

age with adequate adult supervision.

know if we can accommodate your

accommodate arrivals at either facility
