Europeo, Italia-Ungheria 55-62. Azzurre quarte e qualificate per il Mondiale Under 17: Pan nel miglior quintetto del torneo

VARNA - L'Europeo della Nazionale Under 16 Femminile si è chiuso con un quarto posto. Le Azzurre sono state infatti superate nella finale per il terzo e quarto posto dall'Ungheria 55-62 (Pan 16, Santucci 14) ma tornano in Italia con un eccellente piazzamento e la qualificazione per il Mondiale Under 17 che si giocherà in Slovacchia nel 2014. "Non potevo chiedere di più alle mie giocatrici - ha commentato Giovanni Lucchesi - anche perché ritengo l'Ungheria la squadra più forte di questo Europeo, tanto è vero che ieri in semifinale ha ceduto alla Spagna per un soffio. Siamo arrivati un po' a corto di energie alle ultime due partite, dopo lo sforzo compiuto con la Russia nel quarto di finale, ma anche all'interno di una partita certamente non brillante siamo riusciti a non farci travolgere nonostante le pessime percentuali di tiro. Nel finale ho molto apprezzato il tentativo di rimonta della squadra, siamo tornati da -15 a -5, ma credo che alla fine l'Ungheria abbia meritato il successo e la medaglia di Bronzo".

L'Italia ha dovuto inseguire per tutta la partita, al 5-0 iniziale è seguito il parziale di 11-2 che ha portato l'Ungheria sul 17-6 alla fine del primo quarto. Lucchesi ha provato a rimescolare quintetti e difese ma anche nel secondo periodo lo svantaggio delle Azzurre si è mantenuto costantemente in doppia cifra. Il momento peggiore della partita è arrivato sul 42-27, a un minuto dalla fine del terzo quarto (poi chiuso 45-30), ma nel finale l'Italia, ispirata da Santucci e Pan, è tornata a spaventare l'Ungheria: dal 55-42 del 36' si è passati al 58-52 siglato da Pan dopo una palla recuperata a 70 secondi dalla sirena. Santucci ha messo uno dei due liberi che ci potevano riportare a -4, dall'altra parte Aho e Weninger dalla lunetta hanno messo al sicuro il risultato per l'Ungheria. Allo Staff medico dell'Italia è stato assegnato da Fiba Europe il Premio Fair Play della manifestazione, l'amarezza per la Medaglia di Bronzo lasciata all'Ungheria è stata in parte mitigata dall'elezione di Francesca Pan nel miglior quintetto dell'Europeo. Europeo, Italia-Rep.Ceca 54-73. Oggi Azzurre con l'Ungheria (ore 15.15, diretta Sportitalia2) per il Bronzo VARNA - Nella semifinale dell'Europeo Under 16 Femminile, l'Italia è stata battuta 73-54 dalla Repubblica Ceca e oggi alle 15.15 (diretta su Sportitalia2) giocherà contro l'Ungheria per la medaglia di Bronzo. Mariella Santucci è stata la miglior marcatrice delle Azzurre con 14 punti, in finale le ceke affronteranno la Spagna. "Forse siamo rimasti un po' con la testa alla bella vittoria con la Russia - ha commentato Giovanni Lucchesi - ma non abbiamo nulla da recriminare perché la Repubblica Ceca ha confermato di essere una squadra di assoluto valore, solida dal punto di vista mentale e con punti di riferimento ben precisi. Abbiamo provato a tenere nel primo tempo, poi quando la partita si è fatta ancora più dura loro hanno fatto il break e noi non avevamo più le energie necessarie per rientrare". L'Italia ha probabilmente pagato le fatiche del giorno precedente, quando le Azzurre avevano dominato la Russia nel quarto di finale: con la Repubblica Ceca l'avvio è stato complicato (2-9) ma l'ingresso in campo di Santucci e il buon momento di Cubaj ci hanno riportato a -1 (11-12). Al nuovo allungo di Reisingerova, l'Italia ha risposto col canestro del pareggio di Ciavarella e poi nel finale del secondo quarto le Azzurre hanno allungato fino al +4 (31-27). Dopo l'intervallo lungo, purtroppo, è arrivato il break della Repubblica Ceca che dal 31-34 è passata a condurre sul 52-37 con un 21-3 che ci ha condannato alla sconfitta: la maggiore freschezza delle nostre avversarie ha fatto la differenza, quando la nostra aggressività difensiva è venuta meno il gap di chili e di centimetri ha giocato un ruolo decisivo. Nel quarto periodo l'Italia è riuscita a tornare in due occasioni sul -8 ma le uscite per falli di Porcu, Santucci e Costa non hanno consentito alla squadra di Lucchesi di tornare a contatto. VARNA - Battendo la Russia 61-55, la Nazionale Under 16 Femminile ha centrato un grande risultato qualificandosi per la semifinale dell'Europeo di categoria in corso di svolgimento in Bulgaria. La miglior marcatrice della gara è stata Francesca Pan con 24 punti, prezioso anche il contributo a rimbalzo assicurato da Keys e Costa con 12 rimbalzi. L'Italia affronterà domani sera alle 19.30 la Repubblica Ceca, la squadra di Giovanni Lucchesi si è già qualificata per il Mondiale Under 17 che si giocherà in Slovacchia dal 16 al 26 giugno 2014: nell'altra semifinale dell'Europeo si affronteranno Spagna e Ungheria. Le Azzurre hanno dominato la Russia dal primo minuto, realizzando 26 punti nel primo quarto l'Italia ha preso un vantaggio che non è più stato recuperato dalle nostre avversarie. All'intervallo lungo si è andati sul +10, poi la squadra di Lucchesi è sempre riuscita a contenere i tentativi di rientro della Russia nonostante la pessima percentuale ai tiri liberi (10/25, 40%). Europeo, stasera alle 19.30 il quarto di finale con la Russia VARNA - Questa sera la Nazionale Under 16 Femminile affronta la Russia (ore 19.30) nel quarto di finale del Campionato Europeo. Si tratta di un impegno decisamente ostico, dal momento che le nostre avversarie hanno sempre vinto ad eccezione del ko accusato contro la Spagna. Le Azzurre di Giovanni Lucchesi si sono invece imposte nelle prime quattro uscite e poi sono state sconfitte da Ungheria e Repubblica Ceca. "Affrontiamo una squadra completa - ha commentato Giovanni Lucchesi - che ha fisicità, tecnica e atletismo. Servirà la partita perfetta, confido nel fatto che le ragazze abbiano recuperato un po' di energie nel giorno di riposo ma temo che Zecchin non potrà essere della partita. Per poter difendere con l'intensità che ci ha permesso di vincere le prime gare abbiamo bisogno di stare bene dal punto di vista fisico. Sarà dura ma ci proveremo fino in fondo, anche in occasione delle due sconfitte abbiamo ceduto solo negli ultimi minuti". Seconda sconfitta per la Nazionale Under 16 Femminile all'Europeo di categoria in corso di svolgimento a Varna (Bulgaria). Nella terza e ultima gara della seconda fase le ragazze allenate da Giovanni Lucchesi sono state battute 60-44 dall'Ungheria. Le Azzurre si qualificano ai Quarti di finale come terze nel Girone F; venerdì 9 agosto affronteranno la Russia (ore 19.30 in Italia), seconda nel Girone E. Contro l'Ungheria Giulia Ciavarella e Francesca Pan le migliori realizzatrici azzurre con 8 punti. Dopo un avvio molto equilibrato, sul finale di primo periodo l'Ungheria trova il primo allungo, portandosi sul +7 dopo 10' (13-6). Prima battuta di arresto per la Nazionale Under 16 Femminile all’Europeo di categoria in corso di svolgimento a Varna (Bulgaria). La formazione di Giovanni Lucchesi è stata battuta 52-57 dalla Repubblica Ceca nella seconda partita della seconda fase. Nonostante la sconfitta le Azzurre sono comunque già qualificate ai Quarti di finale. La sfida di domani contro l’Ungheria (19.30 in Italia) decreterà il nostro piazzamento nel girone: in caso di vittoria sarà secondo posto, altrimenti terzo. Contro la Repubblica Ceca Mariella Santucci è stata la miglior realizzatrice azzurra con 10 punti. “Abbiamo giocato una buona gara - ha affermato coach Giovanni Lucchesi - ma la Repubblica Ceca è una squadra più matura di noi, anche dal punto di vista fisico, e questo ha fatto la differenza. Domani giocheremo contro un’altra squadra di

assoluto livello come l’Ungheria, già affrontata all’European Youth Olympic Festival di Utrecht. Per metterla in difficoltà dovremo cercare di dettare il nostro ritmo sin da subito. Quarta vittoria consecutiva, la prima nella seconda fase, per la Nazionale Under 16 Femminile al Campionato Europeo di categoria in corso di svolgimento a Varna (Bulgaria). Le Azzurre hanno battuto 63-57 la Francia, dominando la prima parte dell’incontro e soffrendo nell’ultimo periodo. Domani la sfida contro la Repubblica Ceca (ore 12.45) per la qualificazione ai Quarti di finale. Contro la Francia Francesca Pan è stata la miglior realizzatrice dell’Italia con 19 punti. VARNA - Dopo le tre vittorie ottenute nel primo girone, l'Europeo della Nazionale Under 16 Femminile riprende oggi pomeriggio con la sfida alla Francia (ore 15.00) nella prima delle tre gare nelle quali saranno impegnate le Azzurre. L'Italia ha chiuso il Girone C a punteggio pieno e ora, dopo la Francia, dovrà affrontare l'Ungheria e la Repubblica Ceca: la squadra di Giovanni Lucchesi è l'unica che parte con 4 punti all'attivo ma certamente per passare ai quarti di finale sarà necessaria un'altra vittoria. Oggi le Azzurre riposano, come tutte le altre squadre, per coach Lucchesi il giorno di stop ha offerto l'occasione di tirare il fiato e di analizzare le tre vittorie della prima fase. «Abbiamo sostenuto tre prove molto diverse: contro il Belgio si è trattata di una prova emotiva perché era la prima partita, perché per qualcuna delle ragazze era la prima esperienza internazionale e perché era l'esordio in un Europeo con arbitri, avversari e difficoltà diverse rispetto a quelle cui sono abituate. Con l'Olanda abbiamo superato una vera prova di forza, contro una squadra che fa della forza fisica e dell'energia la caratteristica principale, quasi unica. Abbiamo

giocato alla pari sul piano della forza e le abbiamo battute con l'intelligenza che ci ha permesso prima di risalire e poi di contenere le loro folate. Con la Lituania, infine, c'è stata l'attesa prova di maturità, perché il rischio di impantanarci contro una difesa inusuale per stazza e forza fisica come la 1-3-1 era enorme. Con grande maturità abbiamo sopperito alla giornata meno felice di alcune giocatrici con la crescita di altre: anche Lorela Cubaj, la più giovane del gruppo, progressivamente si sta ritagliando il proprio ruolo. La nostra durezza mentale è cresciuta col passare dei giorni: siamo stati in grado di mantenere intensità, lucidità e duttilità difensiva in modo tale da trovare soluzioni diverse a difficoltà diverse. Al momento siamo la miglior squadra difensiva e la sesta offensiva, frutto di una scelta di preparazione durante la quale abbiamo dedicato alla difesa il 40 % del tempo totale. Dobbiamo però migliorare le percentuali, specie da 3 punti, statistica nella quale siamo quarti per tentativi ma non brilliamo per precisione. Se è vero che siamo la squadra col maggior numero di palle recuperate è altrettanto vero che perdiamo ancora più palloni e il saldo è negativo; questo è un altro degli aspetti che dovremo migliorare nei prossimi giorni". L'Italia si affaccia alla seconda fase a punteggio pieno ma i prossimi impegni si annunciano complicati: "Affrontiamo un girone terribile, sfideremo le prime tre classificate del torneo EYOF che abbiamo giocato in Olanda. La qualità fisica è notevole e la qualità tecnica dell'Ungheria è di livello assoluto, ad esempio. La Francia ha perso in Olanda il playmaker titolare, Duchet, una specie di Dumerc in miniatura e forse quello è il reparto più attaccabile. Ungheria e Repubblica Ceca sono potenziali semifinaliste, strutturate con fisici di primissimo livello. Poi c'è un discorso particolare da fare, quello relativo ai campi di gioco: a Varna il campo è ai minimi di regolamento, al contrario del palazzetto di Albena, quindi con punti di riferimento completamente diversi. Terzo, splendido, successo consecutivo per la Nazionale Under 16 Femminile al Campionato Europeo in corso di svolgimento a Varna, Bulgaria: dopo aver sconfitto il Belgio all'esordio e poi i Paesi Bassi, le Azzurre hanno superato la Lituania (57-35), chiuso in testa il girone C e lunedì torneranno in campo per il primo impegno della seconda fase partendo da 4 punti in classifica. In serata si conosceranno i nomi delle tre avversarie, che molto probabilmente saranno Francia, Ungheria e Repubblica Ceca. Con la Lituania, Mariella Santucci è stata la miglior marcatrice della gara con 17 punti, preziosi anche gli 11 rimbalzi conquistati da Lorela Cubaj e i 9 punti di Rachele Porcu. Domani la Lituania (17.15) ma qualificazione già certa Seconda vittoria consecutiva per la Nazionale Under 16 Femminile al Campionato Europeo in corso di svolgimento a Varna, Bulgaria: dopo aver sconfitto il Belgio all'esordio, le Azzurre hanno piegato la resistenza dei Paesi Bassi (60-56) e domani affrontano la Lituania (ore 17.15) per assicurarsi il primo posto nel girone: già al sicuro, comunque, il passaggio alla seconda fase. Mariella Santucci è stata la miglior marcatrice dell'Italia con 16 punti, in doppia cifra anche Francesca Pan a quota 15. L'Italia è partita forte (7-2) ma poi ha dovuto subire il ritorno dei Paesi Bassi, che col centro Ndiba (16 punti e 19 rimbalzi alla fine) sono riusciti ad aggirare più volte la difesa azzurra. La squadra di Giovanni Lucchesi è scivolata a -8 (16-24, parziale negativo di 9-22) ma prima dell'intervallo lungo è riuscita a tornare a contatto (26-27) grazie ai punti di Santucci e Pan ma soprattutto grazie alla splendida difesa che ci ha permesso di recuperare ben 33 palloni. U16 WOMEN Turning Point: Hungary led by 11 at the end of the

first quarter and maintained a double-digit margin throughout the game. With the medal in sight, suddenly the game became tense as Italy mounted one last charge and reduced the advantage to six. Nina Aho made her first free throw and Dorottya Nagy grabbed a huge rebound off the second, working the ball to Virag Weninger to seal the win. Game Hero: Debora Dubei made a succession of

big shots in the third quarter on her way to a game-high 19 points. Stats Don't Lie: Hungary had six more points off the

bench than Italy, and won the game by seven. Italy could not find reliable scoring outside their star players whereas Hungary had more weapons at their disposal. Hungary survived a late push from Italy to take a 62-55 victory in the bronze medal match at the U16 European Championship Women, claiming their

first medal in 37 years. Timea Toth's three-point play had swelled the lead to 14 with less than three minutes remaining, but eight unanswered points from Italy made the Hungarian team nervous. Nina Aho made one free throw with 35 seconds remaining and Dorottya Nagy rebounded the second, leading to Virag Weninger being fouled and knocking down her two free

throws to make the score 61-53, and Hungary were able to hold on. Hungary had controlled the majority of the game, as early three-pointers from Weninger and Dominika Borondy helped them establish a 10-4 lead. Agnes Studer's shot bounced in before a Borondy steal led to Debora Dubei's jump-shot

as the lead grew to 11 by the end of the opening period, with Italy struggling to make any impact inside.

Italy's attempts to gain a foothold in the match were further hampered as leading scorer Francesca Panpicked up her third foul and came out of the game, but Lorela Cubaj was able to cause Hungary some problems, blocking Eniko Kuttor before Rachele Porcu found her on a nice pick-and-roll. Kuttor came back with a tough offensive rebound in traffic and Weninger converted a three-point play, andVirag Kiss grabbed another offensive board to give her team a 30-17 advantage going into half-time. Italy made some good shots in the third good quarter, including Mariella Santucci stopping on a dime and making a

sweet turnaround jumper. But Dubei came up with the answer each time, swishing a step-back three and a nice baseline jump-shot before her strong drive at the end of the period, which put Hungary 45-30 ahead. Giulia Ciavarella's three-pointer brought Italy back within 10 points at the start of the fourth quarter as the teams traded

blows. Dubei knocked down a jumper from the wing and Toth delivered a great pass to Weninger under the basket, but Santucci swooped in with a great offensive rebound and delivered toLucrezia Costa, before Toth's tough play put

Hungary ahead 58-44. Italy made one last push, with Pan's three-point play, Santucci's long-distance shot and Pan's big block on Toth helping them close the lead to six. But Hungary closed the game out to spark wild celebrations among their vocal supporters.

Dubei recorded a double-double in the win with 19 points and 10 rebounds, Weninger had 12 points and Nagy added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Pan had 16 points and Santucci 14 points for Italy, who have the consolation prize of qualifying for the 2014 U17 World Championship for Women along with Hungary, finalists Spain and Czech Republic and fifth-placed France.

Italy upset Russia with a fantastic performance in Friday's quarter-final at the U16 European Championship Women. Now they are dreaming of a place on the podium. In their way - the impressive Czech team.

The Czech Republic have bounced back from their opening-night defeat to France with six successive victories, including a 57-52 win over Italy in a feisty second round match behind Julia Reisingerova'sdouble-double. Italian coach Giovanni Lucchesi managed to slow down the Russian forwards in

the quarter-final victory, and he knows that his team face another tough challenge against the Czech team: "We saw in the game against Russia, it's not enough to concentrate hard for 30-35 minutes - we must be at full focus for the entire game. The Czech team in particular play with a strong intensity, we saw this already, so we need to be ready to battle against them." Reisingerova is the stand-out figure in a well-balanced group and averages 11.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, showing power inside and a nice ability to step outside and knock down a free-throw line jumper.

This gives the 1.93m center the freedom then to distribute from the high post also, with Tereza Sipova often profiting from hard cuts to the basket. Sipova and Lenka Soukalova provide great energy for the team, averaging 11.4 rebounds and 5.1 steals per game between them, with Michaela Gaislerova providing good back-up. In the backcourt Petra Holesinska has displayed an ability to make crucial shots from long-range and is joined by point guards Michaela Matuskova and Karolina Maleckova who help to run a smooth offense.Karolina Fadrhonsova has also

provided great energy for the team off the bench. The Czech offense will be tough to contain, with Reisingerova and company grabbing nearly 20 offensive rebounds per game so far in the tournament. But turnovers have been a problem all tournament, with 24 coming in the earlier match against Italy, who have led the competition so far in forcing steals.

The backcourt pair for Italy, Rachele Porcu and Mariella Santucci, each average at least three steals per game, and they have scored a number of crucial baskets as Italy have advanced through the tournament.Giulia Ciaverella has provided useful minutes off the bench running the offense too, though they will miss the injured Giulia Zecchin. Leading scorer Francesca Pan averages 2.7 steals per game herself to go along with her 13.9 points per game, and she helps her team to protect the paint too with 1.3 blocks per game. Lucrezia Costa andJasmine Keys have been the most

consistent performers for coach Lucchesi up-front, averaging 13.3 rebounds per game between them, while the impressive form of 14-year-old 1.90m center Lorela Cubajgives Italy another option in the middle. Czech coach Richard Fousek knows his team will need to work hard to reach the final: "They are a fast, aggressive

team with some exceptional players. They have a clever coach who likes to change his defensive systems." The teams know each other well after their earlier meeting. The stakes are higher now, and both teams will be giving their all in what should be a late-night thriller in Albena on Saturday.

U16 WOMEN Turning Point: Sara Zavagnini only had four points in the game, but they came in

a crucial first-quarter sequence where Mariella Santucci found her with a nice pass, and then Rachele Porcu stole the inbounds and Santucci again delivered. Italy went 10 points up and Russia were never able to come back. Game Hero: Every time Russia threatened, Francesca Pan had the answer, with

three huge three-pointers in the second half and drawing a crucial offensive foul in the last minute when Russia cut the lead down to four. Stats Don't Lie: Italy committed just nine turnovers in the game while grabbing 12

steals. Giulia Ciaverella led the way with three thefts, and Santucci, Porcu and Pan each had two. Francesca Pan made a series of huge plays to lead Italy to a stunning 61-55 semi-final win over Russia in the U16 European Championship Women.

Russia had rolled through the competition, winning their first five games before losing to Spain in their last game of the group stage.Raisa Musina and Maria Vadeeva had been particularly impressive in the frontcourt, leading Italian coach Giovanni Lucchesi to start Lorela Cubaj, Lucrezia Costa and Benedetta Bonomi in an effort to counteract their size.

Vadeeva notched Russia's first four points but the Italian defensive strategy proved effective, packing the paint and making Russia work hard for everything inside. On the other end Francesca Pan contributed to Italy's first four scores with seven

points and one assist, and Cubaj was troubling Russia inside leading to an early timeout.

Rachele Porcu and Mariella Santucci have been forcing steals all tournament and when Porcu followedSara Zavagnini's score by getting a hand on the inbound pass, Santucci went back to Zavagnini to give Italy a 21-11 lead.

Porcu then connected from long-range and, despite Musina's strong play inside, Italy maintained the advantage at the end of the first quarter. Pan blocked Sabina Abaidullina to set the tone in the second period, and Giulia Ciaverella's nice drive inside was followed by a stylish post move from Jasmine Keys to ensure Italy reached half-time with their lead intact.

Musina began the second half by showing her toughness inside to convert, and then stepped outside to drain a three-pointer as Russia tried to pressure the Italian team. Later in the quarter the teams traded big shots, with Elena Shataeva's three-pointer meeting an immediate reply from Pan, before Daria Kurilchukmade a three-point play to cut

the Italian lead to seven going into the final period. Pan again responded with a vital three-pointer to begin the fourth quarter, but still Russia came and Alina Bespaltseva twice made big shots to cut the lead to six. Pan would not relent, with a three-point play followed by

another long-range effort maintaining her side's lead. Bespaltseva scored another short jump-shot as Russia pushed hard off an Italian miss, and the game became tense with Santucci losing the ball out of bounds. Pan stepped up again, intercepting a pass on the resulting possession and taking it all the way in for a lay-up. Shataeva's jump-shot brought Russia as close as they would come, four points down in the final minute with possession, but Pan capped her wonderful game by drawing an offensive foul, and it was left to Porcu to drain the final free-throws to secure a famous victory.

Musina finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Russia. Pan added six rebounds and two blocks to her game-high 24 points, with Santucci contributing nine points and six assists and Keys and Costa both finishing with 12 rebounds for Italy, who will take on the Czech Republic in Saturday's semi-final.

The U16 European Championship Women quarter-finals in Albena promise to be four

intriguing matches. Which countries will remain in the medal hunt and seal places at next year's U17 World Championship Women? Defending champions Spain have won eight medals

in the last nine years including seven gold medals, and they looked impressive on Wednesday in retaining their 100% record and handingRussia their

first loss. France will be their quarter-final opponent and coach Evaristo Perez is cautious ahead of the

match: "We know the French organisation well from many matches in recent years. We don't worry so much about the opponent - we focus on ourselves, and we are looking for the right attitude,

concentration and intensity from the players." Coach Perez's players have come up big at crucial times in the matches against Croatia, Latvia and Russia, a double-

edged sword showing that despite the unbeaten record, they have been involved in some tight games. Spain have got to the free-throw line more than any other team in the tournament. Behind Iho Lopez andCecilia Muhate they look to have a clear rebounding edge inside, while star guard Angela Salvadores will give France plenty to

worry about outside. Russia will be looking to bounce back from Wednesday's defeat, taking on Italy for a place in the semi-finals. Italy will be missing injured guard Giulia Zecchin, and coach Giovanni Lucchesi acknowledged that Russia's superior size will

trouble his team: "We don't have players as big as the Russian forwards. [Without Zecchin] we will try to play with more size, we will change the team a bit and play more physical, to try to take away the Russian team's advantage. They are a very good team, shooting well outside and inside. We play with serenity, we are happy to reach the quarter-final." Russia have the tournament's leading offense so far, moving the ball well to find a good shot and turning the ball over fewer times than any other team. Italian guards Mariella Santucci and Rachele Porcu have helped their team force the most steals in the competition and their defense will be necessary to slow the Russian team down. Coach Evgeniya Nikonova knows her team will need to play well to secure victory: "Italy are a strong, fast team, so we will look through

the videos and work on different ways to approach them." The tie of the round could well come at 16:00 local time when Hungarytake on Croatia. Hungary's only loss came to the Czech Republic, but Croatia's two blemishes came against the Spanish and Russianjuggernauts and Hungarian coach Andrea Meszarosne Kovacs is well aware that they will provide tough

opposition for her team: "We played two friendlies against Croatia last year and they were both hard games, one win and one defeat. They have at least two exceptionally good players. We want to win, but we know it won't come easy." Croatian coach Dean Nemec is wary of Hungary's tournament-leading defense,

which has only allowed 45.5 points-per-game so far. "We will need to play our best game of the tournament to win, especially on offense," said Nemec, who will hope his team can do a good job protecting the ball while forcing steals from the turnover-prone Hungarian team. Hungary have shown a reluctance to shoot from outside so far, their 50 three-point attempts through six games ranking far below any other team, and the battle for supremacy in the paint should be fascinating with Anita Kelava and her teammates taking on Hungary's impressive front-line of Virag Kiss, Eniko Kuttor and Dorottya Nagy. Latvia have been the tournament's surprise team so far, surrounding the Strautmane sisters with active perimeter players, but the Czech Republic have reeled off five successive wins after an opening night loss to France. "We took the top seed in Group F so now is the time to use this

advantage - we have a great respect for the Latvian team, but they are the best opponent we could have wished for at this stage," said Czech coach Richard Fousek.

Latvia will have their work cut out in trying to slow down the Czech offense and keeping them off the offensive glass, though they may be able to profit in forcing turnovers. Latvia coach Ainars Cukste knows that his team will need a great defensive effort: "The Czech team's center Julia Reisingerova is strong and they have smart and quick outside players,

but I hope our defense will be good and we can stop them." As well as a place in the semi-finals, the four winners will book tickets to the U17 World Championship Women, which is being held in the Slovak Republic in 2014. With the stakes being so high, the spectators in Albena can look forward to four high-quality, competitive matches on Friday.

After six games in Bulgaria, Spanish guard Angela Salvadoresappears to be a lock to reach the All Tournament Team for the second year in a row. Who else

has stood out? "She is never tired, it always looks easy. She uses her energies correctly and she is always under control. She is an incredible shooter, a very impressive player." Italian coach Giovanni Lucchesi is effusive in his praise for Spain's Angela Salvadores. "I knew her from last yearbut in one year, she's really

improved her performance." "She is a really good player, with great technique," agrees Latvia'scoach Ainars Cukste, whose team were on the receiving end of a personal 8-0 run from Salvadores in the second half of their match on Tuesday. Salvadores is leading

the tournament in scoring after six games, averaging 16 points along with 7 rebounds and 2 steals per game as Spain have recorded six straight wins. Spain have the luxury too of surrounding Salvadores with other quality talents. Cukste also identifies Maria Cazorla as a player of great quality, while Iho Lopez and Cecilia Muhate have patrolled the paint, pulling down 19.3 rebounds

per game between them. The Spanish team have looked impressive, but they were pushed hard in their matches with Croatia, Latvia and Russia, all teams who possess great quality in their ranks also.Raisa Musina and Maria Vadeeva have turned heads at the

tournament, with both players measuring up at 1.90m and born in 1998. "The Russian post players surprised me," admits Spanish coach Evaristo Perez, and Lucchesi added "they have great

hands, and they have a good mentality and capacity for playing in the post." Musina is averaging 12.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting well, and Vadeeva has five double-doubles in six games with her 54.3% field-goal percentage easily leading the tournament. Both are averaging at least one block per game, though they will both be mindful of working to cut down on turnovers as they develop. Sisters Paula and Digna Strautmane have been instrumental in leading Latvia to the quarter-finals, Paula ranking in the

top 20 for points (10.8ppg), rebounds (8.2rpg) and assists (4.2apg). Digna turns 15 in September, and is averaging a double-double for the tournament with 15.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Other centers and forwards to impress so far have included Czech Republic's Julia Reisingerova (who adds 12.5ppg to top-10 rankings in rebounds, blocks and field-goal percentage) and the Hungarian front-line of Virag Kiss, Eniko Kuttor and Dorottya Nagy. Croatian forward Anita Kelava has combined 8.8 rebounds and 2 blocks per game with an ability to step outside and

knock down timely jumpers, and she is well supported on her team by two of the tournament's leading scorers, guards Iva Slonjsak and Ivana Dojkic. "We saw all of these players last year in Hungary and the improvement is clear -

it's another great example of how the tournament can help the players," explains coach Perez. Slonjsak is shooting well, leading the tournament in free-throw percentage (86.2%) while ranking highly among three-point shooters too, averaging 15.3 points and 4.2 assists per game and frequently leading the Croatian charge as she looks to push the ball up the court at every opportunity, while Dojkic has 14 points and 3 steals per game.

When considering steals, the Italian backcourt of Mariella Santucciand Rachele Porcu must be mentioned. The two have been a constant nuisance to other

teams in the competition, recording 6.9 steals per game between them with Porcu especially showing a knack for timely interventions. Spain's Maria Conde has been the queen of timely interventions so far, beginning

with a game-winner against Croatia on opening night and making other big shots since then. And French captain Ornella Bankole has made an impression with

her tough drives to the hoop, notching three double-doubles on her way to 13 points and 9 rebounds per night. Outside the quarter-finalists, special mentions should go to Swedishpair Adriana Camber and Fanny Hakansson, Slovak Republic'sVeronika Remenarova, Greece's Maria Fasoula and Evgenia Kollatou, Dutch pair Laura Westerik and Janis Ndiba, and particularly Lithuania's Laura Juskaite andTurkey's Selale Kepenc. Juskaite has averaged a double-double

while adding 3.2 steals and 1.7 blocks per game, while Kepenc is one of the most accurate shooters in the championship and has led the tournament in minutes played. The quality of play has been impressive throughout, says Russian coach Evgeniya Nikonova: "Every team has good players; there is a wide variety here." Hungary's Andrea Meszarosne Kovacs agrees: "There are lots of talented girls

here. It will be interesting to see how they develop. We see many teams with a good structure for developing players, and we hope of course that we are among them."

LATE RUN GIVES HUNGARY VICTORY 07.08.2013

U16 WOMEN A strong fourth quarter gave Hungary a 60-44 win over Italy, sealing second place in Group F and a quarter-final against Croatia at the U16 European Championship Women.

The Hungarian defense began strongly, imposing their size advantage on their opponents and limiting Italy to just six points in the opening period.

Italy came back in the second quarter, with Giulia Zecchin forcing two quick steals which led to six quick points for her team. Nina Aho's shot with 16 seconds

remaining in the quarter gave Hungary a four-point lead heading into half-time. Italy scored the first seven points of the second half, but Hungary responded with an 8-0 run themselves, Debora Dubei's shot forcing coach Lucchesi into calling a

timeout. His team responded, and Lorela Cubaj's shot early in the fourth quarter gave them the lead again. But top-scorer Francesca Panpicked up her fifth foul and the Italian

team missed a series of shots as Hungary surged clear, a 13-0 run sealing victory. Virag Kiss had a game-high 14 points and added 11 rebounds, while Dubei had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists and Eniko Kuttorgrabbed 14 rebounds with

seven points. Pan and Giulia Ciavarella had eight points each for Italy, who will face Russia in

their quarter-final.

CZECH REPUBLIC HAND ITALY FIRST DEFEAT 06 August 2013 U16 WOMEN

The Czech Republic secured their place in the quarter-finals by taking down previously-unbeaten Italy 57-52 in Group F of the U16 European Championship Women. The Czech Republic's Julia Reisingerova was a constant menace to the Italian

team, scoring eight of her team's first 10 points as they got off to a fast start. Great ball movement provided Karolina Fadrhonsova with an easy look inside and Michaela Matuskova's three-pointer from the corner gave the Czech team a

19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Italy responded strongly in the second quarter, taking the lead with a 14-1 run which culminated in Rachele Porcu's three-pointer. Porcu then ended the half

with a great drive, splitting two defenders and converting to give Italy a 27-25 advantage. The Czech team again came out of the locker room strongly, scoring the first six points of the third quarter. Petra Holesinska twice got inside to convert on drives,

Despite leading from start to finish, Italywere given a late scare by a battlingFrench team in their 63-57 Group F win in the U16 European Championship Women.

The two nations met at this stage last year and Italy looked set to repeat their 2012 victory with a strong end to the first quarter. After the tense opening exchanges, Italy surged clear with the final five points of the opening period through Mariella Santucci's three-pointer and Giulia Ciaverella's jumper, both coming off steals forced by

Ciaverella's defense. An 8-0 burst in the final minutes of the second quarter looked to put the game away as Rachele Porcu scored five quick points before she fedFrancesca Pan for a three-pointer to make the

score 37-21. France tried to fight back but the Italian defense was able to hold them off, although an 8-1 run into the final quarter reduced the deficit to nine.

Camille Lenglet's free throws made it a four-point game with less than a minute remaining, but Santucci drained some

crucial free throws herself to seal the game for her team. Pan had 19 points for Italy, Santucci added 12 and Jasmine Keys had 10 points and eight rebounds. Ornella Bankole had a fantastic all-round game for France, leading all scorers with 20 while adding 14 rebounds, three

assists and three steals. Italy move to a 3-0 record in Group F while France drop to 1-2 and will play neighbours Belgium on Tuesday in their next

game.

SECOND-HALF SURGE IN ITALIAN WIN 03 August 2013

U16 WOMEN Italy overcame Lithuania's defense to pull clear and remain unbeaten with a 57-35 Group C win in the U16 European Championship Women.

Italy's suffocating full-court defense earned them an early advantage, with Benedetta Bonomi profiting in the form of two nice jump shots.

Lithuania turned around the momentum as both teams put in some great effort. Jasmine Keys forced up a turnaround jump shot which beat the buzzer, and on the other end Laura Juskaite forced a steal and dived to tip the ball to Rasa Knyzaite for an open lay-up.

Italy ended the first quarter ahead 20-12 but Lithuania clamped down in the second period as Italy added only four further points. Laurita Jurciute picked off an errant

pass and took it all the way to cut the lead to four at half-time. Italy tightened the screws defensively in the second half and restricted their opponents to just 15 points as they pulled away. Rachele Porcuended the third

quarter with five quick points to put her team 44-26 ahead, an unassailable lead. Lithuania battled to come back but will now fight in the classification games, after winning Division B in 2012, to avoid an immediate return. Knyzaite ended with 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals, while Juskaite had a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds).

TALY HOLD THEIR NERVE TO BEAT DUTCH 02 August 2013 U16 WOMEN

Italy sealed their place in the second round of the U16 European Championship Women with a hard-fought 60-56 win over the Netherlands in Group C.

Italy's defense caused their opponents problems throughout, with two early shot-clock violations before Laura Westerik'sthree-pointer at the buzzer

avoided a third occurrence. The Dutch team improved in the second quarter, with Janis Ndiba imposing herself on the boards as

her team took a 27-26 half-time lead. Italy came out after the interval on fire, starting with a 10-0 run highlighted by numerous turnovers from their swarming full-court press, and capped by Francesca Pan's three-pointer which moved

them nine points ahead. The Dutch fought until the end, going on a 7-0 run to begin the fourth quarter until another great shot from

Pan stopped the momentum.

Mariella Santucci proved to be an energiser for her team and her beautiful assist to Lorela Cubaj kept Italy out of

reach. Laura Steggink scored a three-pointer in the last minute to halve the deficit but Santucci sealed the win at the free-throw

line. Pan (15 points, 5 steals, 3 blocks) and Santucci (16 points, 4 steals) led their team in scoring and proved a constant thorn in the Dutch side.

Ndiba finished with 16 points and 19 rebounds for the Netherlands.

DEFENSE IS KEY FOR ITALY 01 August 2013

U16 WOMEN Italy got their Group C campaign underway with a dominant 58-37 win over Belgium in the U16 European Championship Women.

Belgium were eager for revenge against their Italian foes, who triumphed in the 2012 semi-final between the two nations, and the Belgian team jumped out to an early 10-5 lead.

But from that point it was one-way traffic as Italy went on a 22-0 run to surge away. They pressured the Belgian backcourt into multiple turnovers and took full advantage to establish a commanding lead.

Belgium were able to slow their opponents down in the second half as Italy only added 20 further points, but the damage had been done and they couldn't make a run to reduce the deficit.

Francesca Pan led the Italian team with 18 points, seven rebounds and five steals while Mariella Santucci added six steals too along with nine rebounds. Marie Cole and Serena-Lynn Geldof top-scored for Belgium with 10 points

apiece.
