Acoustics

A balanced acoustical environment often plays an important part in improving productivity, comfort and peoples’ sense of well being.

Through appropriate selection and placement of USG acoustical ceiling systems, it is possible to improve speech intelligibility, reduce unwanted noise or increase privacy within a space or between adjacent offices.

Acoustical ceilings absorb and/or attenuate sound. The two main acoustical performance ratings indicate panel performance:

αW, NRC - defines the average sound absorption of a ceiling system

DncW - defines the average ‘room to room’ sound attenuation of a ceiling system.

Sound absorption“Sound absorption” describes the reduction of noise within a room. Acoustical ceiling tiles absorb sound energy and serve to control acoustic reverberation time. Different tile patterns provide different levels of sound absorption.

Sound attenuation“Sound attenuation” refers to the attenuation of noise passing into a room from outside, such as room-to-room noise or noise from above ceiling services. The test data in dB (DncW) for each tile gives guidance on the sound insulation, but it should be seen in the context of the overall room construction.

Humidity

Extreme heat, humidity and fluctuating climatic conditions can shorten the life of a ceiling system. The connection of temperature

to relative humidity (RH) is crucial in determining the best product for any application. USG’s specially formulated ceiling panels resist high heat and humidity without visible sag and are available in a range of performance options up to 100% RH/40°C.

The USG ceiling tile range meets or exceeds the minimum requirements of BS8290 (1991) as defined as:a. Normal environments

(max. 25±2°C/65±5%RH)b. High humidity environments

(max. 25±2°C/90±5%RH)

• For applications in extreme environmental conditions such as exterior soffits, parking garages or swimming pools, products with 100% RH/40°C are recommended. Install with DONN Brand DX24KB corrosion resistant grid.

• For applications with uncontrolled environmental conditions, natural ventilation systems, or in humid areas such as washrooms, kitchens or wet process areas, products with 95-99%RH/40°C or better are recommended.

• For applications with intermittent heating and cooling systems, products with 90%RH/32°C or better are recommended.

• For applications with normal controlled environmental conditions, products with 70% RH/29°C or better are suitable.

Fire

Life safety and protection of property are important considerations in the design and specification of

acoustical ceiling systems. Specially formulated Firecode (FC) rated ceiling

panels are a crucial component of USG’s tested fire protection systems. Specification and installation must be in accordance with the selected fire test description of the system.

Reaction to fireCeiling products are generally considered suitable for multi-use buildings when the products conform to BS 476 part 6 and 7.

BS 476 part 6 is the fire propagation classification which compares the constitution of combustible materials to the development of fire – performance class 0.

BS 476 part 7 is the surface spread of flame classification which indicates the tendency of materials to support the spread of flame across the surface. (Best performance Class 1, worst performance Class 4.)

All USG tiles achieve Class 1 and Class 0 as designated by BS 476 part 7 and 6, and as required by Building Regulations Approved Document B.

Fire protectionStructural fire protection BS 476 parts 21 and 23.

Suspended ceilings can be used to provide protection to the structural elements of a building. In the event of a fire, the ceiling membrane protects the structure for a period of time enabling evacuation and fire fighting. The period of protection is determined by testing to BS 476 part 23. Testing to BS 476 part 21, section 7, determines the protection provided to a loaded timber floor structure. In order to ensure the validity of a “fire protecting” ceiling, installation must be as described in the relevant test report. Any alteration may affect the fire protection capabilities of that ceiling system.

For further information or advice on our testing, products or relevant standards, please contactyour local representative or our Technical Services Department.

Warranty

USG offers a lifetime (30 year) limited warranty on ultra high performance tiles and a 15 year limited warranty on high performance tiles when installed on USG’s DONN Brand suspension grid. Refer to USG Technical Services Department for details.

USG ceiling systems must be installed and maintained in accordance with current USG written instructions and industry best practice as defined by BS 8290.

Step1Measuringandplanningarekeyfirststepsintheinstallationprocess.Measurement and placement of the tees will be on centre (o.c.), meaning from the centre of one to the centre of the next. Planning starts with a drawing of the room that shows all walls, including bays, alcoves beams and stairwells. Note which direction the joists (if any) are running, or if architectural drawings necessitate working in one direction or another. Determine the lines for main runners and cross tees in such a way that the tiles that abut the wall are at least half a tile (300mm).

Step2Markthedesiredceilingheight(maintainingatleast70mmclearancebelowthelowestduct,pipeorbeam.)Measure and mark the walls at all corners above the installation level (=‑add the height of the wall angle to the desired ceiling height.) Snap a chalk line and test for level. Measuring down from joists or up from the floor is not recommended, since

neither may be level. Install wall angle with top edge of angle at the chalk line, spacing appropriate fixings 450mm o.c. or closer. Cut and mitre outside and inside angles at 45˚, fitting them snugly together. Alternatively, simply butt angles at corner (as in system illustration).

Step4Attachthemainrunnerstothehangers.In each row, trim the main tee so that the cross‑tee slot will line up with the cross‑tee string. Mount main tees, resting the cut end of the main tee on the wall angle. The cut end of the main runner should be about 5mm away from the wall.

Step5Installcrosstees,assuringthattheyareadequatelyconnectedtomaintees(they"click"inplacewhenproperlyseated).Where two cross tees intersect in the same slot, insert second cross‑tee end to the left of the first. Where a cross‑tee is installed without an opposing cross‑tee, a nail should be slipped into the opening of the cross‑tee clip to maintain the pull‑out value for the cross‑tee.

Step6Layinpanels,beginningatonecornerandcompletingrowbyrow.Tilt each panel up through the opening and lower it to rest squarely on all four tees.

Step7Removalaseasyasinstallation.Just grasp the main tee with one thumb under the main tee‑cross tee connection and, pushing up with the thumb, give the main tee a quick, short twist. That’s all it takes – no tools needed. The strong clip means that the grid can be reinstalled straightaway with no tearing or bending of the clip.

Step8 MainteedemountingUsing a straight shearing motion, push withyour left hand and pull with your right handto disconnect the main runner splice. Note:do not twist the splice during the removalprocedure.

Step3Toconfirmlevel,stretchastringuntiltautalongthepositionswhichthemainteewilloccupy.Inserting a nail between the wall and the wall angle at marked locations serves as a good anchor for this purpose. Stretch another string across the room where the first row of cross tees will be located. This identifies where the first prepunched slots need to fall. Check to be sure the cross tee string is at 90˚ to the main tee string via the 3‑4‑5 method. Install the hangers at 1200mm o.c. above the lines of the main runners. Fix to the structure above using appropriate plugs, screws or other devices.

A Cut tees with aviation snips, first the stem and then the flanges.

B Cut mineral fibre panels with utility knife and straight edge, cutting the face first. Cut panels should be at least 15mm larger than the opening.

C To install panels around obstructions, draw their exact locations on the panels and cut out. Then cut the panel in two parts through the largest section of the cut‑out to enable fitting.

D To trim for Shadowline edge, use a utility knife to cut the panel, first at the face, then from the edge, to the same depth as Shadowline. If windows, stairwells, etc., extend above the ceiling plane, build suitable valances and attach wall angle.

Indoor Environmental Quality

IndoorEnvironmentalQuality(IEQ) refers to all

environmental factors that affect the health and

wellbeing of building occupants. IEQ focuses largely on

indoor air quality, with comfort, humidity, air exchange,

acoustics, and lighting quality being contributory factors.

To help building professionals create healthy,

pleasant spaces, USG offers: Ceilingwithlittleornoformaldehyde

USG offers the widest selection of standard ceilings

that satisfy stringent guidelines related to VOC (Volatile

Organic Compounds) and formaldehyde emissions.

Most USG panels outperform levels set by OSHA,

Greenguard, and the State of Washington.

Many mineral-fibre and gypsum-panel ceilings

outperform standards established by the Collaborative

for High-Performance Schools (CHPS).

USG's cast-mineral-fibre panels meet or exceed the

extremely stringent standard of the California Office

of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, which

classifies them as formaldehyde-free.

AntimicrobialtreatmentstocountermouldThe presence of mould, mildew and other microbes,

which can cause problems ranging from allergic

reactions to illness, is a symptom of a larger

construction or maintenance problem allowing

unwanted moisture to develop. A sound mould strategy

begins with good building design, careful detailing and

proper maintenance.

As a backup, architects and specifiers may choose

materials offering enhanced mould resistance for

a degree of short-term protection in the event of a

system failure. To meet this need, USG offers mineral-

fibre ceiling panels with two levels of antimicrobial

protection:

CLIMAPLUSTM Superior Performance. A patented

antimicrobial treatment for broad-spectrum control of

fungi, mould, mildew, bacteria, yeast and algae. These

ceilings deliver performance scores of 8 to 10 when

tested per ASTM D3273 and are the only standard

ceiling panels on the market with a limited lifetime (30-

year) warranty against mould and mildew growth.

CLIMAPLUSTM AntiMicrobial Treatment. Face and back

coatings and/or formulations that inhibit or retard

growth of mould, mildew and odor/stain-causing

bacteria on treated panel surfaces.

With good design and careful material selection,

building professionals can create structures that

function as beautifully as they look.

IndoorAirQualityWhy should we care about indoor air quality (IAQ)?

Because it is estimated that most people spend as

much as 90% of their day indoors. According to studies

by many worldwide Environmental Protection Agencies,

the air within homes, schools and office buildings may

be even more polluted than the outdoor air. Inadequate

ventilation, humidity levels and indoor pollutants are all

contributors to indoor air quality problems.

Because children spend hours each day at school and

are more susceptible than adults to pollutants, they are

particularly at risk.

Studies from the UK (University of Southampton)

suggest that more than 50% of time taken off school by

pupils through chronic conditions is related to allergy

and respiratory problems, and the buildings themselves

that children play and learn in could be contributing to

the problem.

Mould

Mould spores are everywhere, and they can grow on

virtually any surface when moisture is present. Moulds

reproduce by means of tiny spores that are invisible

to the naked eye. When mould spores land on wet

surfaces, they may begin to grow indoors.

Sources of moisture within buildings can include wet

building materials, leaks in the building envelope or

plumbing system, and HVAC condensation or flooding.

Many of these problems, however, can occur during

construction, when materials are installed incorrectly or

without regard to moisture considerations. All building

materials, both organic and inorganic in composition,

can become breeding grounds for mould.

AsthmaThe Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in 2002

carried out studies which provided new evidence of the

relation between workplace exposure to indoor moulds

and development of asthma in adulthood.

The findings suggest that indoor mould problems

constitute an important occupational health hazard.

The Finnish workplace mould study estimated that

the percentage of adult-onset asthma attributable to

workplace mould exposure to be 35.1%.

AcousticqualityOften overlooked but equally important as a factor in

IEQ is the acoustic design of buildings and workspaces.

Good acoustic design results in a balanced environment

that allows the occupants of a workspace to hear

clearly without distraction.

LightreflectanceA well lit (but not overly so) working environment is

beneficial to the occupants making it comfortable on

the eyes when close up work is carried out. Clearly if

the environment is poorly lit, eye strain and headaches

can result. Conversely, if the environment is too highly,

lit the occupants may spend much of the day squinting

resulting again in headaches and discomfort.

Because lighting constitutes so much of the operational

energy in an office building, it is important to consider

the light reflectance of a ceiling panel as an investment

in reducing energy costs and improving sustainability.

LR value represents the percentage of light reflected

from the surface of a material. The industry average for

panels is LF .70 to .80, and values above LR .85 are

considered high. USG offers a number of panels with LR

values at these levels.

SickBuildingSyndrome(SBS)The term "sick building syndrome" (SBS) is used

to describe situations in which building occupants

experience acute health and comfort effects that appear

to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific

illness or cause can be identified. The complaints

may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may

be widespread throughout the building. In contrast,

the term "building related illness" (BRI) is used when

symptoms of diagnosable illness are identified and can

be attributed directly to airborne building contaminants.

A 1984 World Health Organization (WHO) Committee

report suggested that up to 30 percent of new and

remodelled buildings worldwide may be the subject of

excessive complaints related to indoor air quality (IAQ).

Often this condition is temporary, but some buildings

have long-term problems. Frequently, problems result

when a building is operated or maintained in a manner

that is inconsistent with its original design or prescribed

operating procedures. Sometimes indoor air problems

are a result of poor building design or occupant

activities.

BuildingforthelongtermWhile every corporation wants to take the lead in the

marketplace, not all corporations care about how they

do it. USG has a long history of innovation, not just in

product development but also in manufacturing safe,

healthy products. As a building materials manufacturer,

we want to make the best products and systems but we

don't want to do it at the expense of building occupants.

Occupant health and productivity are coming to the

forefront as issues that architects, designers and

building owners need to take into consideration in the

design process. The problems are not solved purely by

selecting the correct materials, there is a much wider

consideration in the design of modern buildings to meet

the highest standards.

To support that need however, USG strives to

manufacture ceiling products that outperform the

highest product standards. Look for the IEQ logo to

determine which USG ceiling tiles offer particular

performance characteristics in achieving the best

possible design for Indoor Environmental Quality.

BS EN 13964:2004European Standard for suspended ceilingsBS EN 13964:2004 Suspended Ceiling: is the harmonised European standard applicable from 1st January 2005, which provides information for the parties responsible for designing, manufacturing and specifying/selecting suspended ceilings used for interior applications. It covers suspended ceilings sold as kits, individual components & membrane components and describes test methods & methods of assessment as well as provisions for the evaluation of conformity of the products to the requirements of this standard. It should be noted that the standard does not cover the following types of suspended ceiling:• ceilings in mobile buildings • caravans and other forms of transportation,• ceilings with heating or cooling properties,• ceilings subject to water penetration

requirements,• ceilings used externally where requirements

other than covered by this scope would apply (tunnels, canopies, petrol stations, arcades, open sports facilities, car parks, etc.),

• heavy duty suspended ceilings or their supporting construction,

• ceilings formed in-situ with no prefabricated membrane (e.g. plastered ceilings).

The standard will in the main cover the following essential characteristics for most interior suspended ceilings. Those highlighted are directly relevant to the products in this publication:

• reaction to fire• fire resistance (kits only) • release of asbestos• release of formaldehyde • shatter properties (brittle materials only) • flexural tensile strength• load bearing capacity (grids) • electrical safety• sound insulation (kits only) • sound absorption• thermal conductivity• condensation

Many of these performance characteristics have in the past been assumed or even deemed unnecessary, however under the banner of EN13964, manufacturers have to prove or justify the performance of the products. As a result we will have to become familiar with some new terminology in making reference to product performances. We will cover some of the main ones in the following section.

PerformancesandterminologyWe have become very familiar with the existing terminology used to clarify test performance of ceiling products. Typical examples such as Class 1/0 to describe fire reaction performance, 90%RH @ 40°C for humidity resistance and αW 0.7 for sound absorption are in common use within our industry. The advent of EN 13964 means that some of these familiar expressions will disappear and a number of new ones will be introduced.

Some of these such as sound absorption and thermal conductivity remain the same. We will highlight the new requirements below with explanations as to what they mean.

ReactiontofirePossibly the most complex change. The existing test procedure in the U.K. to determine fire reaction performances of ceiling linings is to test in accordance with British Standard BS 476: pt 7 and BS 476: pt 6. Under the requirements of BS EN 13964 we must now test in accordance with the requirements of EN 13501-1: 2002. Without overcomplicating this here with excessive detail, EN 13501-1 dictates which specific test options are available to achieve performance levels. For fire reaction of ceiling linings this is now to be expressed involving 3 distinct factors; Combustibility (Flame spread and propagation) expressed from A2 (best) to F; Smoke production expressed from s1 (best) to s3; and Burning Droplets expressed from d0 (best) to d2. Where currently we are used to referring to Class 0, Class 1 etc, we must become familiar with the expressions A2-s1, d0 or B-s2, d3 for example. In simple terms, A2 means the membrane component is of limited combustibility; s1 means that smoke production is light and d0 means that no burning droplets were released from the specimen. There is also a category A1, which basically means non combustible, similar to the current BS 476: pt 4, which does not require reference to smoke production or burning droplets.

The latest edition of Building Regulations Approved Document B (2006 Edition, Volumes 1 & 2) now includes these new performance requirements and illustrates a general comparison of performance requirements between current and new standards. Please refer to Building Regulations Approved Document B: Volume 1 - Section 3, Table 1; and Volume 2 - Section 6, Table 10.

ReleaseofformaldehydeWhere Formaldehyde containing material is part of the formulation of a ceiling component this component must be tested to determine the level of formaldehyde likely to be released. This is to be tested and classified in accordance with ENV 717-1 & 717-2, and classified E1 or E2. An E1 classification means that formaldehyde release is either nil or negligible.

ReleaseofasbestosNo part of a ceiling shall contain asbestos.

SoundabsorptionNo change. The absorption performance of USG Acoustical Ceiling products will be stated as before on the product page.

ThermalconductivityNo change. The Thermal Resistance (R-value) of USG Acoustical Ceiling products will be stated as before on the product page.

FlexuraltensilestrengthThis new requirement effectively illustrates the ability of a membrane component to support its own mass when installed in the substructure (grid), under specific environmental conditions. It is intended to determine the aesthetic appearance of the membrane component in installation. This must be determined by testing in accordance with the procedures specified in EN 13964. The result of the test shall be declared as a classification of deflection (expressed from Class 1 [best] to Class 3) in combination with a classification of exposure (expressed as A [lowest] to D) and the applied load. The results are expressed as, for example, Class 1/B/No load, where Class 1 means the deflection of the membrane component is no more than 1.2mm (based upon a 600mm edge); B indicates an environment of up to 90% RH @ 30°C; and No Load means no additional load was applied to the component in test.

CertificatesofconformityIn respect of membrane components (ceiling tiles), USG engaged the services of Warrington Certification Ltd (EC Reference Number: 1121) to test, collate and present the test documentation, and produce a Certificate of Conformity to provide independent proof of the component compliance with the standard. Copies of these certificates are available from USG upon request.

CEMarkingofsuspendedceilingsCompliance with all the relevant requirements of BS EN 13964 allows a manufacturer to apply a CE mark symbol to his products. This will show that the product is approved and certified with the requirements of the applicable European Directive and is therefore legally able to be sold and marketed in those countries participating in the European Economic Area (EEA) agreement. The Construction Products Directive (CPD) relevant to Suspended Ceilings is Council Directive 89/106/CE. This identifies the requirements for suspended ceiling products upon which the new standard BS EN 13964 has been based.

PeriodofcoexistenceBS EN 13964 was introduced and applicable from 1st January 2005. Originally a 12 month period of coexistence with existing local standards meant that BS EN 13964 was to become mandatory on 1st January 2006. It should be noted that EN 13964 is currently being discussed at European level with a view to making amendments to the standard. This will result in a revised standard and a guidance document being published at some point in the future. With this in mind, the European Commission Standing Committee on Construction has agreed to extend the coexistence period of EN 13964. At the time of publication, the date for the end of the coexistence period is 1st July 2007, at which point any Suspended Ceiling product placed into the European Economic area must be CE marked in accordance with EN 13964 Suspended Ceilings.

Page 43: Acoustical Ceiling - Knaufusgeurope.com/fileadmin/user_upload/.../Acoustical_Ceilings_2007/...reference guide for specifying USG acoustical ceiling systems. To obtain the information

43

System performanceUSG ceiling systems should be installed in accordance with recommendations described within this catalogue and the DONN grid application guide. System performance following any substitution of materials or compromises in assembly cannot be guaranteed and may result in failure under critical conditions. Reference should be made to BS 8290 1991 Suspended Ceilings parts 1, 2 and 3, and the European Standard for Suspended Ceilings BS EN 13964:2004. COSHH data sheets are available on request.

Site storage and handlingStorage on site should be as short as possible with environmental conditions as near as possible to those specified for occupancy (see below). Any storage area should be secure and fully protected from the weather with cartons stored on a clean, dry base. Cartons of material should never be rolled, dropped or slid, and under no circumstances used as a workbase or substitute for ladders, scaffolding, etc.

Pattern directionWith directional face patterns, such as Glastone, Sandrift and Frost, the orientation of pattern relative to light sources should be carefully considered for desired visual effect, and specified and installed accordingly. Variations in colour and fissure size in Glastone, Sandrift and Frost ceiling tiles will be of little consequence within a single production batch. However, minor variations can occur from time to time, and projects should be planned so that all material for continuous ceiling space is ordered and delivered from the same production batch. USG tiles are marked with a directional arrow on the back and should always be installed with this in alignment to ensure total consistency of pattern and paint shade in a production batch.

Overlaid materialWherever possible overlaid material, such as insulation, should not be laid directly on the back

of the ceiling membrane, as this will compromise the fire resistant properties of the ceilings. In normal conditions (BS 8290), overlaid material should not exceed 3.6kg/m2 weight. For high humidity environments, overlaid installation shall be limited to 1.2 kg/m2.

Installation/environmental conditionsFor applications with normal controlled environmental conditions, products with 70% RH/29°C or better are suitable.

Installation should only take place under ambient conditions after residual moisture from concrete and plaster has dissipated.

The recommended relative humidity should not exceed 70% RH within a temperature range 65-85°F, 18-29°C for installation and occupancy.

Once ceiling installation has commenced, it is essential that RH% and temperature be maintained at acceptable levels by heating the building if necessary. Dry heating should be employed and paraffin or gas heaters avoided. These recommendations should still be applied between completion of contract and the occupation of the building. Unoccupied buildings with uncontrolled atmospheres may have a wide temperature range during a 24 hour period which could lead to an unacceptable change in dimension stability of the ceiling panels, causing excessive sag.

For applications with intermittent heating and cooling systems, products with 90%RH/32°C or better are recommended. (See Technical Performance Selector, pages 4-5.)

For applications with uncontrolled environmental conditions, natural ventilation systems or in humid areas such as washrooms, kitchens or wet process areas, products with 95-99%RH/40°C or better are recommended. (See Technical Performance Selector, page 4-5.)

Ceramic Radar ceiling panels perform especially well in areas such as swimming pools, where the ceiling may be subject to unusually high levels of humidity up to 100% RH and chemical attack. They should be installed with USG DONN Corrosion Protected ceiling grid and appropriate hangers to resist corrosion.

All USG tiles should be protected from sustained direct contact with water.

Maintenance and cleaningGeneral cleaning of dust and loose dirt may be easily achieved using a soft brush or vacuum cleaner. Soiled panels can be cleaned with an art gum eraser or dampened cloth or sponge containing as little water as possible.

Clean Room tiles can be wet wiped on a regular basis without damage.

Panels should never be soaked or immersed in water.

Cleaning can also be carried out by specialist contractors using proprietary methods and chemicals. It is strongly recommended that a trial area be cleaned to ensure that there is no detrimental effect on the ceiling panel or grid.

Re-decorationIt should be noted that a new paint finish may compromise the Surface Spread of Flame classification and acoustic absorption for that panel.

Please consult the USG Technical Services Department for expert advice and recommendations.
