THE MARLOWE Young Musician of the Year competition celebrates its

20th anniversary this year.

It has become a respected platform for talented young performers and also provides valuable experience of audition processes and live performance. The competition has always involved the Kent Concert Orchestra, conducted by John Perkins, and Classic FM presenter Jane Jones has compared the event since 2008. John said: “This is the premiere competition for young musicians who study or have a family connection with the county of Kent. It is a major stepping -stone for the winner and a positive experience for all who take part. Former winners have gone on to be principals with London orchestras and leading soloists.” String, brass, woodwind or piano players aged 18 years or younger at the time of the April auditions and who have reached Grade 8 standard or higher, are invited to enter. Auditions will take place on April 25 at Kent College music department and John will choose the finalists, who will go on to play with the KCO in the live final at the Gulbenkian Theatre on September 28.

The winner receives the Kent Messenger trophy, vouchers from Crowthers of Canterbury and the opportunity to perform a solo concert with a professional orchestra.

Last year’s winner was clarinettist Ellie Eden. She will be performing as a soloist with the Becker Symphony Orchestra at the Sandwich Festival in August. For more details and to download entry forms, go to www.newmarlowetheatre.org.uk . Closing date for applications is April 1.

WORLD PREMIERE AT CADOGAN HALL FOR KENT MUSIC TUTOR

One of Kent Music’s tutors will have the World Premiere of his latest work James Bond Piano Concerto performed at the Cadogan Hall, London on February 20 th at 7.30pm . Simon Proctor has been working with Kent Music for more than 20 years and teaches harmony and composition at Kent Music Academy which is Kent Music’s Saturday

school for gifted and talented youngsters. Simon began working on the James Bond Piano Concerto around four years ago when it started life as a solo piano piece entitled James Bond Rhapsody. The piece has now been expanded for a full orchestra and contains a virtuoso solo piano part. The piece is a medley of all the James Bond Themes and, as it was written four years ago, was missing the last two films from the series. The score has now been bought up to date and the latest films are included. The score is currently 15 minutes long but, with more films being added to the James Bond series, it could certainly end up being longer in future! Simon has already had interest in the piece from around the world including America and a recording of the piece will be made this summer in the USA. James Bond Piano Concerto will be performed by the London Gay Symphony Orchestra in their concert of Classic Movie Themes and the virtuoso piano part will be played by American Thomas Pandolfi . Tickets can be purchased by calling 020 7730 4500 or visiting the Cadogan Hall website at www.cadoganhall.com and cost £18 with concessions available.

There are several legends about how the animals were chosen for the Chinese zodiac. This is one of them:-

The Jade Emperor is the name of the Emperor of Heaven.

Long ago, in China, the Jade Emperor decided there should be a way of measuring time. On his birthday he told the animals that there was to be a swimming race. The first twelve animals across the fast flowing river would be the winners and they would each have a year of the zodiac named after them.

All the animals lined up along the river bank. The rat and the cat, who were good friends, were worried because they were poor swimmers. Being clever they asked the strong ox if he would carry them across the river. 'Of course' said the kind ox. 'Just climb on my back and I will take you across.'

The rat and the cat quickly jumped up and were very excited when the ox soon took the lead in the race. They had almost reached the other bank when the rat pushed the cat into the river leaving him to struggle in the water. Then just before the ox was about to win the race the rat leapt on his head and on to the bank to finish first. 'Well done,' said the Jade Emperor to the proud rat. 'The first year of the zodiac will be named after you.'

The poor ox had been tricked into second place and the second year of the zodiac was named after him.

Shortly after the exhausted tiger clawed his way to the river bank to claim third place. Swimming across the river had been an enormous struggle for him against the strong currents. The Emperor was so delighted with his efforts that he named the third year after him.

Next to arrive was the rabbit, who hadn't swum across at all. He hopped across on some stepping stones and then found a floating log which carried him to the shore.

'I shall be very happy to call the fourth year after you,' the surprised Jade Emperor explained.

Just then a kind dragon swooped down to take fifth place.

Why didn’t you win the race, as you can fly as well as swim?' the Jade Emperor asked. 'I was held up because some people and animals needed water to drink. I needed to make some rain,' the dragon explained. 'Then when I was nearly here I saw a poor little rabbit on a log in the water and I blew a puff of wind so that the log would float to the river bank.' 'Well that was very kind of you and now you are here you will have the fifth year of the zodiac named after you.'

The next thing the Jade Emperor heard was the sound of the horse’s hooves. Just as he was thinking the horse would be the next animal to arrive, a sneaky snake wriggled out from around one of the horse’s hooves. The horse was so surprised that he jumped backwards giving the snake a chance to take the sixth place in the race. The poor horse had to be satisfied with seventh place.

Not long afterwards a raft arrived carrying the goat, the monkey and the rooster. They explained to the Emperor how they had shared the raft that the rooster had found. The goat

and monkey had cleared weeds and pushed the raft to the shore. The Emperor was very pleased that the animals had worked together. He said the goat would be the eighth zodiac animal, the monkey the ninth and the rooster the tenth.

The next animal to finish was the dog. 'Why are you so late when you are one of the best swimmers?' asked the Jade Emperor. 'The water in the river was so clean that I had to have a bath on the way,' explained the dog. His reward was to have the eleventh year named after him.

Now there was one place left in the zodiac and the Emperor wondered when the last winner would come. He had nearly given up when he heard a grunt from the boar.

'You took a long time to cross the river,' said the Emperor to the boar. 'I was hungry and stopped to eat,' explained the boar. 'After the meal I felt so tired that I fell asleep.' 'You have still done well,' said the Jade Emperor. 'The last year of the zodiac will be named after you.'

As for the cat who had been pushed into the water by the rat, he finally crawled out of the water but was too late to have a year named after him. He felt very cross with the rat and since then cats have never been friends with rats.

From that day to this the Chinese Zodiac has followed this cycle of years named after these twelve animals.

2010 Year of The Tiger

Chinese New Year will begin on 14 February 2010 which marks the start of the Year of the Tiger. The year will be 4708 on the Chinese Calendar. Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival.

Chinese New Year is the main Chinese festival of the year and it is not a religious event. We explain some of the traditions and stories linked to this celebration.

As the Chinese use the Lunar calendar for their festivals the date of Chinese New Year changes from year to year. The date corresponds to the new moon (black moon) in either late January or February. Traditionally celebrations last for fifteen days, ending on the date of the full moon. In China the public holiday lasts for three days and this is the biggest celebration of the year.

The Chinese calendar is different from that used in the United Kingdom. It is made up of a cycle of twelve years, each of them being named after an animal. This is very like our signs of the zodiac. Some people believe that people born in a particular year such as the year of the Dog will have some of the characteristics of that animal.

A lot can be said about the hype that surrounds any particular movie. In many cases — especially in those that involve big brands, big directors and big marketing campaigns — hype has an intense effect on the way audiences see the film. Did it live up to the hype? Was it all worth it? These are questions that plague us. And by us, I mean general audiences.

Personally, I don’t see my role in the process as having much to do with the hype other than observing it and upon reviewing the film, possibly creating it. When it comes to my opinion of the film itself, hype is not a factor. What I care most about is this: whether or not the film delivers on its promise. With Avatar, director James Cameron promised us one thing — he promised to show us something that we’ve never seen before. To his credit, this is exactly what he’s done.

We open with a voice-over from Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a marine who lost the use of his legs long ago. He is telling us of his dreams of flying, and how he’s heading deep into space to a distant world to replace his twin brother in a privately funded science project. There he will drive an Avatar, a new body that is a hybrid of his DNA and that of the planet’s indigenous people (known as the Na’vi). With this new body, Jake is tasked with aiding a peaceful scientist (Sigourney Weaver) and a not-so-peaceful Colonel (Stephen Lang) in studying the Na’vi and trying to find a way to relocate them so that the company behind the project can mine an absurdly valuable mineral called Unobtainium (cheesy, I know).

All of this goes according to plan until Jake meets Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a native who sees in him something special, something that might help her people survive the oncoming invasion by the humans. It is a simple story, yes. But also one that works perfectly for what Cameron is trying to do with Avatar. He’s not worried about you thinking that it feels like Dances with Wolves meets Ferngully, or that it is an allegory of oppression that has been done before. Where he gets you is in the execution of creating Pandora, a vast world that is familiar, but also completely fantastic. It is a world that feels every bit as big as its 10-foot tall inhabitants standing next to their 6-foot tall human counterparts. A world that is rich with colour and wonder, enhanced by a

depth of detail that can only be achieved through the work of a tyrannical, obsessive creative force like Cameron. As well, Cameron understands pacing. His two and a half hour movie feels big, don’t get me wrong. But at no point does it feel bloated. It is the difference between an epic adventure story (in which something is always happening, even if it is as mundane as seeing Jake learn how to ride Pandora’s version of a horse) and a film dragged along by filler. Jake’s journey is not a simple one, and his learning of the Na’vi culture is something that is simple enough for the audience to engage, and complex enough for the audience to remain engaged. And it makes for a story that continues to move, even when there’s no action happening on screen. This succeeds because Cameron does the hard work to make it succeed.

But there is action, friends. Lots and lots of action. If there’s one thing I hate about big action directors, it is that too many of the ones working today don’t understand how to keep their promise. If you’re going to make an audience sit through two and a half hours of story (some of which is schmaltzy love story), then you need to pay them back in the end. Everyone remembers the love story at the heart of Titanic, which was at times tedious, but no one will ever forget the spectacle of seeing that ship finally go down — watching the hull crack in half and hearing the shrieks of the dying passengers was truly haunting.

With Avatar, Cameron applies the same principle and delivers a 30-minute action sequence in the film’s final act that is quite literally awesome in the truest sense of the word. All of the film’s action in the first two

acts builds to this final sequence, showing glimpses of some badass machinery on the side of the humans and signs of unwavering valour in the Na’vi, but none of it compares to what we see in these final moments. If ever there was an action sequence that truly put the fate of an entire planet on the line, it is this one. It places the film’s main characters in a situation of real danger, and pulls no punches. No one is safe. In my press screening, I counted no less than 5 moments in the final 10-minutes alone that received an audible response — from a room of stuffy critics. I can only imagine what this experience would be like with a packed theatre. The angles are perfect, the violence is at times quite brutal and nothing is easy, which seems to be the way that Cameron likes it.

Story. Pacing. Action. All of these things we’ve seen before. Every great action movie has them. But with Avatar, we’re seeing them all through a new lens. A computer-generated world that is photoreal. Photoreal not in that we have seen it before, but in that we believe it could exist. The quality of the Na’vi is so detailed and natural that when placed next to humans, we can believe that if these creatures were real, that is exactly how they would look to the naked eye. As visual effects go, this is an achievement like no other. No uncanny valley issues here. The Na’vi, for all we know, are very real.

Also on the plus side, the performances are strong all the way around. Worthington rises above the stale performance for Terminator Salvation, Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana also command the screen, but Stephen Lang rises above them all to turn in a new twist on the military hawk obsessed with getting the job done at all costs. Lang achieves this through a sense of displacement – making jokes about things he’s about to blow up that show more as rationalization instead of outright callousness. This goes a long way in creating a more well-rounded personality and making the unfeeling, murderous moments that much more intense.

The only problems I found with Avatar were small. First, some of the voice-over work for Sam Worthington’s Jake feels faux-poetic, as if he’s trying to be poignant, when in fact

they are just obvious. Jake is a grunt, a soldier and as the movie tells us more than a few times, not a smart man. So for him to wax poetic in voice-over feels out of place.

As well, there is something to the 3D version of this movie that feels too advanced for the human eye. The speed of Avatar is remarkable, and the movie’s ability to maintain an immense amount of detail in the world of Pandora while moving so fast is remarkable. The problem is that it’s so fast that my eyes couldn’t keep up. For a movie that is trying to break barriers in creating a world on a computer, this might not be a bad problem to have.

While I know there is much more to be said about this behemoth of a film — much that will probably be said in the coming week by myself and the staff here at FSR — I am left with one overwhelming thought. I can’t imagine someone walking out of a screening of this film and not being in awe. Not necessarily of the film as a whole, but of the technical achievement. James Cameron has truly delivered something that we’ve never seen before. And this achievement isn’t that Pandora looks real or that we believe the Na’vi could exist and connect with them as much as we do the human characters. His achievement is that he’s shown us a glimpse at what filmmaking could be in this century. Whether or not it will “change the game” is irrelevant (and frankly, impossible to predict), but he has shown us a realm of possibility that was previously thought to be impossible. And when you think about it, that’s really all he promised to do in the first place.

The Upside: A spectacular visual experience unlike anything you’ve seen before.

The Downside: Some bits of bad dialogue, a story that isn’t incredibly inventive.

On the Side: The movie is 40% live action and 60% photo-realistic CGI

Overall: GREAT!

This issue we start our 3 part article on how to get help from nature with common, (and not so common), conditions. We hope they help but of course if any condition persists or you feel unsure you should always seek proper medical advice. 1 Bad Breath No other natural remedy freshens bad breath as well as parsley, says David Orlarsh, N.D., a naturopath in Plymouth, N.H. This herbal food garnish is rich in chlorophyll, a green plant compound that kills the bacteria that cause bad odour. Nibble on a sprig after eating raw onions or garlic or whenever your breath smells sour. 2 Blemishes To clear zits quickly, keep a small sealed jar of this natural topical remedy on hand (it keeps for a few months): Combine 2 tablespoons of green clay, 1 tablespoon of goldenseal powder (Hydratis canadensis), 2 to 3 drops of tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), and enough water to form a paste. Apply the paste to your blemish at bedtime and leave it on all night. The clay dries up pore-clogging oil, and the goldenseal and tea tree oil kill the bacteria that cause infection. 3 Blisters Don't pop your blister, no matter how tempting it is. Doing so increases the chance of infection. Instead, dab a cotton ball dipped in plain old drugstore witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) on the area at least four times a day, says Brad Bongiovanni, N.D., a naturopath in Atlanta, Ga. Witch hazel contains astringent tannins that dry up the fluid-filled skin and relieve pain by increasing circulation. It also contains alcohol, which is drying. 4 Body Odour If your body odour persists despite good hygiene, your problem may be clogged pores. When your skin can't properly eliminate body wastes, bad body odour can result. Gently dry-brushing your skin just before every shower exfoliates the dead skin that traps those odour-causing wastes. You'll find body brushes in most drugstores. If you brush with long, gentle strokes moving toward your heart, you'll also improve circulation, which will help your body detoxify more efficiently. (This won't eliminate your need for deodorant, but you may be able to use less of it.) 5 Bruises Experts say the popular muscle soreness remedy Arnica is also your best bet for minimizing bruises and healing them fast. As soon as you bump your knee or other body part or notice a swelling or discoloration, gently rub a dollop of this homeopathic cream on it. Arnica shrinks inflammation and increases circulation to flush away the stagnant blood that turns your skin black and blue. 6 Burns You may know lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) best for its soothing scent, but you can also use it to take the sting out of a first-degree burn (the kind you might get by touching a hot pan). Not only does this oil speed the healing process and prevent scarring, Bongiovanni says, but it also fights bacteria on vulnerable new skin. Gently clean the burn with soap and water first. Then combine one part pure lavender essential oil

and three parts carrier oil, like almond or olive oil, and apply the mixture liberally to the burn at least three times a day, leaving the wound uncovered. 7 Canker Sores You can once again eat spicy foods in comfort if you douse painful canker sores with raspberry leaf tea (Rubus idaeus). Steep 2 tablespoons of dried raspberry leaves in 1 cup boiling hot water until it cools. Strain the tea, and then swish a few mouthfuls for about one minute each three times a day. The tannins in this tea (which tastes a little like black tea) reduce the swelling and clean the sore so it can heal faster, explains Andrea Candee, a South Salem, N.Y.-based herbalist. 8 Chapped Lips First, chuck your Chapstick. Conventional lip balms contain petroleum and sometimes alcohol, both of which dry the sensitive skin on your lips. Instead, moisturize and protect your parched, peeling lips with castor oil. Carry a small squeeze bottle of the oil and apply it with your finger often throughout the day. If you plan to be out in the sun, use a natural petroleum- and alcohol-free balm with an SPF of 15 a few minutes after rubbing in the castor oil. 9 Chest Congestion The sweetness of your breath may suffer, but eating a plate of curried, sautéed onions on rice can really loosen congestion in your chest. Lightly

sauté two onions, sliced, and at least 1 teaspoon of curry powder in 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil until the onions are soft. Onions contain quercetin and sulphur, two plant compounds that break up mucus and increase circulation, explains Orlarsch. Curry also loosens phlegm. And for that breath? See Number 1! 10 Constipation If you don't like prunes, you have another option for constipation relief. Dried figs work just as well as prunes. They contain soluble and insoluble fibre, both of which flush out your intestines. In fact, five figs supply at least 20 percent of your daily fibre requirement, more than almost any

other fruit. Nibble on four or five at the first sign of constipation and drink at least one glass of water. If you don't get results within three hours, eat a couple more every three hours until you do. 11 Corns Soften this thick, callused skin with a little castor oil, recommends Bongiovanni. Apply a drop of oil to the corn with your finger first thing in the morning, as soon as you get home from work, and right before bed. Cover the corn with a Band-Aid before putting on socks and shoes. You should see slow and steady improvement over several weeks. 12 Cough Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) may be best known as a candy, but as a tea it can lick a lingering cough. Steep a liquorice root tea bag or 1 teaspoon of the loose dried root in 1 cup boiling hot water for five minutes, and drink up to three mugs of it throughout the day. Your cough should improve right away, but you can continue to drink three cups a day for up to three days. Liquorice can raise your blood pressure, so don't drink it if you have hypertension or diabetes. 13 Cuts The antioxidant power that makes vitamin E so good for your heart also speeds the healing of minor cuts. Simply prick a vitamin E capsule with a sterile needle and squeeze the oil onto your cut

at least three times a day. Cover it with a Band-Aid if it's a serious wound. Be sure to choose natural vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol), Orlarsch says. Research shows that it has more antioxidant power than synthetic vitamin E. 14 Dandruff To clear up dandruff you need to counter the cause of the problem: your scalp's acidic pH level. To restore your scalp's natural alkaline pH level, first wash and condition your hair. Then, while still in the shower or bath, pour a cup of apple cider vinegar on your head and rinse with water. 15 Diarrhoea It may seem counterintuitive, but to clear up diarrhoea you may need more bacteria--good bacteria, that is. Diarrhoea can be a sign of an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in your intestines. Taking pro-biotic supplements corrects that imbalance, Bongiovanni says. Look for a brand that contains six to eight strains of live organisms, including Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacter. Bongiovanni recommends taking enough supplements to get 20 billion live organisms a day (this may be a large number of capsules). You should see improvement in one or two days; if you don't, see a doctor.

16 Dizziness A common kitchen spice can stop a case of the spins. Simply drop a pinch of cayenne into a glass of warm water and sip. The warmth of the water and the heat of the cayenne cause your body to pump more blood and oxygen to your brain, which makes you feel clearheaded and steady. If you continue to experience bouts of dizziness, see your doctor.

WITH the demands of the modern car-buyer increasing all the time, manufacturers are having to change their range line ups to keep up. The days of a car remaining the same over a long period of time are now over.

Mazda’s MX5 has recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, but the current car is vastly altered from the one that went on sale on 1989. The MX5 is now on its third generation, but the same basic design as the original underpins the current car. It is still clearly built with the same aim in mind – it is a good-looking and compact two-seater convertible that manages to stay affordable. The range starts at just £16,345 and goes up to £21,695.

Despite this affordability, even the entry-level version is blessed with plenty of equipment, such as alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, power steering, two airbags, a CD player with ipod attachment and electric windows and mirrors.

Move away from the base model and toys such as Bluetooth phone connection, cruise control, climate

control air conditioning and heated seats are on offer.

Perhaps the biggest difference to the original version is the inclusion of a folding hardtop. Hardtops were also available for the first two generations, but as they didn’t fold away they were impractical when it came to roof-off motoring.

The folding roof of the latest car brings the extra security of a solid roof, but doesn’t reduce the ease of removal. The electric operation means the undoing of one clip and 12 seconds is all it takes for the roof to go from fully up to fully down. It slots in neatly behind the seats so it doesn’t take up boot space, although that remains minimal at 150 litres.

About the only criticism that could be levelled at the folding roof is that it can’t be removed while the car is moving, as other droptops such as the Audi A3 convertible can.

The update the MX5 received for its 20th birthday has changed little, but has ironed out a few imperfections and made a few tweaks. The most

obvious is the looks, which have been brought into line with the rest of the Mazda range. A five-sided grille now sits on the front of the car, and it gets new headlights and taillights.

Inside everything looks much the same as it has since the third generation was released in 2006. Thankfully the few changes have seen the removal of the cup-holders in the door and central partition that tended to knock painfully against the driver’s knee.

Mazda says it has also introduced stiffer door modules and additional sound insulation materials that reduce the noise while driving. While it may have reduced the cabin noise marginally, the MX5 is still not a particularly quiet place to be, and the stereo has to be up loud if you want to hear the radio while travelling at speeds in excess of about 50mph.

There are some irritations that remain sadly, and the lack of a boot-release button on the boot itself remains an annoyance. There is a button in the cabin, but there is a

distinct possibility of locking the keys in the boot without one on the back of the car. The other downside is visibility – with the roof up it is very tough to see anything over your shoulder, making manoeuvring tricky. This is a criticism that can be levelled at many if not all little convertibles though, so should not be held against the MX5.

Despite all the changes to the cosmetics and equipment in the MX5, one thing remains the same – the driving experience. The rear-wheel drive setup has been kept throughout the Mazda’s life-time, and is key to the little car’s enjoyment factor.

It, along with a fantastic chassis, means the car is a joy through corners and feels perfectly balanced. A more enthusiastic driver could easily see the rear end sliding while cornering if desired. The electric stability systems, such as the Dynamic Stability Control, mean that the car is kept from losing control if this is not what is wanted.

Page 19: Across Kent February Issue 5

19 Please Mention Across Kent When You Call Our Advertisers 0844 588 7611

The manual gearchange enhances the driving enjoyment even further. It is fantastically crisp and the gear lever takes only a short movement to switch between positions. There is a choice between a five- and a six- speed ‘box, but the five only comes with the lower-powered 1.8-litre engine. The higher-revving 2.0-litre engine does mean the car can be a little jerky when moving away at low speeds, but this is something that can be countered with a little practice and it is the better option of the two.

For those that are not keen on a manual gearbox, there is an automatic option for the first time in the MX5’s history. Although you may find some second-hand manual MX5s for sale, these are all imported from Japan and there has never been an auto version sold in the UK before.

The automatic gearbox, named Powershift and sold only with the more powerful 2.0litre engine, is generally smooth and competent around town and at low speeds. At higher speeds there is more of a notable difference, and anyone looking to drive energetically will find the Powershift frustrating at times.

Instead of settling, it tends to switch between different gears when accelerating on the motorway. It drops from sixth down to as low as fourth when even the slightest acceleration is applied, which can become unsettling. A solution is to put the gearbox into manual and use the paddles on the steering wheel instead, but this defies the point of having the automatic in the first place.

The automatic is the most expensive in the range, costing £21,695, but this increase in cost is clearly thanks to the gearbox alone. Mazda has also taken away the upgraded suspension and shock absorbers it gives to the equivalent manual. This is telling as it hints at the sort of buyer that would be happiest with the automatic MX5. For those that are looking for a neat little convertible but aren’t interested in the Mazda’s fantastic driving ability, the Powershift is perfect.

However, there are many buyers that will be seduced by the fantastic handling, and the manual is by far the better choice. For years the MX5 has been fantastically popular and the latest additions to the range ensure it will continue to be, and deservedly so.
