Do I have to vote in ACT Legislative Assembly elections? You must enrol and vote if you are: An Australian citizen; 18 years or over; and Living in the ACT. You may be fined if you don’t vote. Do I have to vote in ACT Legislative Assembly elections?

How do I enrol?

You can enrol:

• Online at www.aec.gov.au or

• Using a paper form available from ACT post offices and public libraries or by calling or visiting Elections ACT.

Use the same form to change your address or your name. You must keep your enrolment up to date.

When do I vote?

Polling day is 15 October 2016. Early voting is available from 27 September for voters who can’t vote on polling day.

Where do I vote?

The list of polling places is available:

• At www.elections.act.gov.au

• By calling Elections ACT;

How do I fill in the ballot paper?

Write number 1 in the square beside the candidate who is your first choice.

Write number 2 in the square beside the candidate of your second choice.

Show your 3rd, 4th and 5th choices the same way.

You can fill in all the squares if you wish using the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and so on.

Do not use ticks or crosses. Your vote won’t count.

If you need help, ask a friend, a relative or a polling official.

Can I vote electronically?

Yes, at pre-poll voting centres.

The voting instructions are available in different languages on the computer screen.

Who do I vote for?

You vote for the candidates who you think will best represent your interests.

Where can I find information about the candidates?

Political advertising, including how-to-vote cards, is banned within 100 metres of a polling place. Plan in advance how you want to vote.

Look for information about candidates and parties on websites, in newspapers, on TV and radio and in your letterbox in the weeks before the election.

Contact candidates and political parties directly by phone for information about policies.

How do I vote if I can’t get to a polling place on election day?

Vote before election day:

• At a pre-poll voting centre from 27 September. For locations and hours of operation, go to the Elections ACT website.

• By postal voting. Apply online at www. elections. act. gov. au or complete a postal vote application form, available from ACT and Queanbeyan post offices and ACT public libraries, or phone Elections ACT.

What accessibility support does Elections ACT provide for voters with disabilities?

Election information brochures, sent to all households, are available as audio files in English on the Elections ACT website and in ACT public libraries.

Polling places are rated for disability access with the ratings available on Elections ACT’s website.

All polling places have a voting screen suitable for voters in a wheelchair.

Voters with vision impairment can vote independently at pre-poll voting centres using electronic voting. Magnifying sheets are available at all polling places.

Voters with limited mobility can register to be a General Postal Voter. A postal vote will automatically be sent out at each election.

Mobile polling teams visit most nursing homes and hospitals before polling day.
