A letter from the Directors Winter 2021

What a year it has been!!! As we move forward into winter, we look to hope. As Martin Luther King

Jr. stated, "Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars."

We have seen many stars here in our community! Thank you to all of our wonderful community

members who have been so very patient and appreciative as we all continue to learn to adapt and

change through these uncertain times. We have been referring to our department as Newtown Parks

and Re‐creation these last 8 months as we have been adapting and programing around and through a

pandemic. The leadership, community, and staff is what has made us strong and resilient and has

provided a constant desire to move forward and work hard!

A star at the core of our department for over 13 years has been Edward Marks volunteering to be a

part of the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department Commission. Ed has been an icon for

Newtown as a native who has participated as a star baseball athlete to a head counselor for Day

Camp, a father of five children, a commissioner of the Parks and Recreation Department, and

eventually to Chairman. Ed has decided to step down as chairman and we would like to honor and

highlight Ed by mentioning the numerous additions and improvements that have occurred to the

department through his reign.

Over the years, Ed has led our department and shared the vision and value of recreation to the

Newtown community. As the Commission Chairman, Ed supported the creation of Eichler's Cove as a

waterfront facility for swimmers and boaters alike. Ed has guided the department through the

construction or renovation of nine athletic fields, including two synthetic surfaces. Under his

guidance, our parks have seen numerous improvements, such as the skate park, Dog Park, Fun space

II, new tennis and pickleball courts at Treadwell and Dickinson Parks, field lighting at Newtown High

School, High Meadow Field, and both pool and pool house renovations at Treadwell Park. Ed has

always been one to step up and tirelessly volunteer at and support our special events and programs.

We recall when Ed brought 4 of his dogs to Strutt your Mutt and had their nails clipped for a

fundraiser and was the trash collector with his wife Tammy for the Parks and Recreation Carnival, and

has always been there to work the registration table at the races, sell tickets at events, attend a

ceremony and any important meeting. Ed has been a tireless advocate of improving recreation in

Newtown, and a consistent voice of reason, for which we are truly grateful.

Instead of a gathering to celebrate Ed's service due to Covid, we are asking for donations to the park

gift fund in order to permanently memorialize Ed's amazing contributions by installing a tribute for

him. We hope to install this tribute at a park of Ed's choice in the near future. If anyone is interested

in supporting this fund please contact parks and recreation at 203‐270‐4340. We will forever be

grateful for Edward Marks and his 13 plus years of service to Newtown Parks and Recreation.

We wish you hope, happiness, good health, and a safe 2021!

residents of Newtown. The pantries are exclusively for the use of Newtown residents. Presently most of these foods are canned,

dried or frozen. Last season the Victory Garden provided over 3,500 pounds of fresh, healthy produce to our neediest families. The

Victory Garden has doubled in size, and thanks to some very generous donors, the new garden has high tensile steel woven deer

fencing. The Parks & Recreation Department cultivates the soil and provides irrigation. The site has full sun, and parking is nearby.

The Victory Garden is supported by the Town of Newtown and the Newtown Parks & Recreation Department.

DONATE: All donations are made through the Parks & Recreation Department: Park Gift Fund, Memo: Victory Garden.

Some guidelines of the garden:

v Volunteers should form teams, and will be given a 150 square foot plot of garden. The produce will go directly to the food

pantries. Share the work with a team; learn from each other and from other teams.

v Each team should have a placard/sign on its row with a team name. The funnier, the better!

v There are no fees associated with the garden.

v No non-organic herbicides or pesticides are allowed in the garden. Fertilizers are allowed.

v Help with the garden preparation and planning.

v Are you an experienced gardener? Teach novice gardeners and students. Hold a workshop or class at the garden.

v Students needing volunteer hours are welcome along with Girl Scout and Eagle Scout projects.

v No time to commit to owning a row? The uncommitted can garden without owning a row, but may help others with

community or shared rows.

To sign up to “Own a Row”, or to help in other ways, contact: [email protected]

Please note: Last year’s volunteers get right of first refusal
