In groups, ss must turn over cards with the answers to match your Q’s
3 Back Writing For word/spelling practice teams stand in rows, silently use their finger to
‘write’ one word on their partners back. Last s says/writes the word on the
board
4 Broken
Telephone
In 4 rows, students whisper sentences to the next s. Last s. writes. Choral
reading to review, with the last 4 reading the first sentence, the next 4
reading the next sentence etc.
5 Crossword

To review keywords & spelling ss must join all the words in the keyword
group(s) horizontally and vertically using only the 1st
& last letters of each
word.
6 DIY Word
Order
Cut up sentences of 5-10 words each into parts (words and ‘chunks’). Ss
must put them back in the same order. Good with 4/more envelopes for
groups/pairs to work together. Grammar
7 Finish the
Sentence
Good for check ss understand the meaning of presented grammar and/or
vocab. ex.) Dates: My birthday___ Today____ Seung-woo___ This vacation____
Use miniboards in groups/pairs. Each completion must be new!
8 And the dice

Create a 6-code system using a dice. Whenever the dice is thrown ss must follow the
code ex.) 1. Parrot last sentence 2. Say a synonym/antonym of the last word 3.
Define/Translate the last word 4. Say the hypernym of the last word 5. Make a
sentence with the last word 6. Spell the last word backwards. Create your own code!
9 Growing story Silently, ss take turns writing the next word of a sentence on the board 10 Hide my

To review clothing (or rooms in a house; places in town etc.) and another
group of words, mime taking the words in turn and putting them
somewhere. Ss must recall (by speaking or writing) where each word is ex.

11 Cuisenaire
Rods
Give 4 colored board markers/magnets/papers to each group of 4. Each
student takes one color. That color represents your ‘code’,

student). Fastest group first, each group member
must say a correct comparative sentence. Repeat
either the comparative or the object in the sentence

Have ss swap their colors clockwise each ‘play’.

12 Hot Seat 3 or 4 groups send one student to their Hot Seat to guess the word they can’t
see on the board/screen. Ss mime OR give ENGLISH hints to help them guess

Sentences
Mix up the words in a sentence; ss re-arrange and say/write. Could be
combined with a SILENT Sentence Race
14 Keyword
Count
Tell ss your keyword group name. Quickly read a passage containing your keywords.
Ss must 1) count the number of keywords they hear and after a second reading,
2)copy all the keywords they hear from the list they have on their desks (or on the
screen) Listening
15 Kim’s Game Show ss your jumbled keywords for 30’. Ss must look, remember, then write
the words in groups.
16 Odd One Out Ss must say/write the different word in a group of words 17 Out of focus Show pictures of your key words out of focus (or only show a small part) for
ss to predict what the matching word is. Online focus tool OR cover the
picture/flashcard, and slowly reveal for ss to guess.
18 Running
Dictation
In pairs/groups one s. runs to the wall, memorizes a sentence and returns to
the group and says the sentence. Another s. writes. Etc.
19 Same syllable Ss must write as many words as possible with the same syllable ex.) canDY:
Day, Sunday, everyday, daylight, today etc.

20 Shunting

Write a passage containing all your keywords with no punctuation. Ss count
the keywords/words/sentences… Reading: Show on screen: 1) ss write down
how many words there are; 2) how many sentences there are.
21 Substitutions After modelling it, give ss a starting sentence. Group game: In groups, ss
must change only one word in turn, keeping the grammar correct and
avoiding repetition. Ex.) I like sport> You like sport> You like bananas etc. Give
substitution words to make it easier ex.) you, bananas etc.
22 Syllable

2 teams sing a simple song syllable-by-syllable: twin-kle-twin-kle-li-ttle-star,
how-I won-der-where-you-are…

meaning/grammar/spelling as true or false ex.)

Also do standing; slowest to move left/right is out then FASTEST is ‘out’
To check ss understanding they must stand on the left for true, right for
false or sit/stand; hold up red or green card etc. Those sitting become
‘teacher’, taking turns calling the sentences.

Techniques
Use the techniques below in this class (different techniques from everyone plz!)
1 A to Z Go randomly around the class or the circle getting ss to name words in your word group starting with
each letter you call. Ss sit down when he/she gives a new word
2 Venn Use Venn Diagrams to elicit similarities and differences
O Use color to make word/grammar forms stand out on the board
Also, Cuisenaire Rods (see below)
4 Correct the
teacher
Make deliberate mistakes. Reward ss who notice and correct your mistakes.
5 Dictogloss Story/passage recall in groups, where group members share the words they wrote/remember to
reconstruct the original.
6 Disappearing prompt
Erase words/sentences one at a time until ss must remember the whole sentence/dialogue
7 MiniBoards Use laminated A4 paper for ss to write in pairs (word or sentence speed writing games)
8 Not OUT! Use counters/cards instead of ss being ‘out’ in games. Fewest counters wins.
9 On the walls Pin your keywords/phrases around the class walls. Show a pic or say the Korean translation. Ss
must look for the matching word on the walls.
10 Order Ss order the words according to length, (alphabetic) spelling. Also, do this standing!

Parrot
To encourage and check ss listening, hold a parrot card to ss; they must repeat your last sentence
12 Q to the A Say only the answer. Ss say the question.
13 Silent demo Demo parts of a game silently. Groups of Ss must write/say each instruction in English
14 Smile! Give each s or group of ss several large Smiley faces. As you pause at each keyword, ss hold up the
matching Smiley emotion ex.) happy, sad, tired, excited, confused(ss don’t know!)
15 Sslloww!! Write/Draw very slowly for ss to predict the word
16 Upside Down Hold your flashcards upside down to check ss are paying attention
