National Awareness Campaign: Kairos Project

From!1!July!2012,!the!kairos!Project!has!become!the!National!Theme!of!Study!of!the!entire!Leo!District!108!ITALY.!The!primary!objective!of!!the!kairos!Project!is!to!be!able!to!improve!the!scholastic!integration!and,!therefore,!also!social!integration!of!people!that!usually,!due!to!unawareness,!fears!and!prejudices!,!we!consider!"different"!from!us!"presumed!ableKbodied."!An!integration!project,!of!course,!but!an!INTEGRATION!ON!THE!CONTRARY!:!through!the!creation!of!situations!in!which!the!"!ableKbodied"!try!to!act!as!the!"deviant",!the!goal!is!not!to!make!the!deviant!similar!to!us!but,!rather,!try!to!discover!the!wonders!of!its!diversity.!In!fact,!we!strongly!believe!that!people!"ableKbodied"!really!need!to!have!a!greater!awareness!of!diversity!and!that,!thanks!to!the!knowledge!of!the!difficulties!that!their!friends!have!to!ride!out!every!day!in!their,!they!can!share!more!and!more!common!areas!and!can!internalize!the!needs!of!the!other!person,!so!that!the!diversity!can!be!a!source!of!inner!wealth!for!anyone.!

The!project!has!been!developed!by:!

K!Collaboration!with!the!primary!and!secondary!schools!

K!ExtraKschool!awareness!events!!Talking!about!the!educational!field,!the!Kairòs!Project!develops!providing!an!operating!manual!in!secondary!schools!in!order!to!be!a!support!to!the!teacher!for!the!awareness!of!disability.!!In!addition!to!it,!in!primary!schools,!is!provided!for!each!student!the!text!"Looking!for!Abilian!".Through!the!manuals!is!proposed!a!recreational!and!reflexive!activity!that!allows!children!to!do!a!concrete!experience!of!disabilityKdiversity!and!operate!reflections!on!their!emotions!about!it.!Play!or!draw!in!the!dark,!write!with!the!kitchen!gloves,!get!in!the!game!to!be!able!to!communicate!with!classmates!who!do!not!see!or!feel,!playing!with!another!child!

who!can!not!move!their!legs!or!arms…!are!all!activities!that!allow!us!to!experience!of!diversity,!which!is!normal!for!some!people.!

!Until!today!the!Leo!Clubs!started!in!5!schools.!It’s!a!good!result!considering!that!the!project!is!new!for!everyone.!Talking!about!the!extra!school!area,!kairos!Project!fits!easily!even!for!an!adult!audience,!through!different!communication!channels.!It’s!important!to!try!different!emotions!that!lead!us!to!reflect!on!the!ways!in!which!we!relate!with!people!"different"!from!us.!

Every!district,!every!club!and!every!member!has!been!able!to!give!free!rein!to!their!creativity:!we!organized!dinners!in!the!dark,!lunches!kairos,!paths!in!the!dark!at!the!Blind!Institute!of!Milan,!movies,!lectures,!many!lunches!and!dinners!together!with!disabled!children,!short!films!...!We!are!always!looking!for!new!ideas!to!implement!the!Kairos!Project.!The!important!thing!is!to!let!your!fantasy!free.!Our!goal!is!that!this!SPECIAL!THINK!will!become,!with!the!time,!our!"NORMAL!THINK".!

LEO Hunting Mercury LEO+ Hunting+ Mercury! is! an! Italian! LEO! Clubs’! National! Service! for!collaboration! between! the! Association! and! the! Italian! National+Research+Council+–+Institute+of+Atmospheric+Pollution+Research!(CNR>IAA).! This! collaboration! started! from! an! initiative! of! the! Italian! Observation+ System),! an! initiative! of! the!Member! Countries! of! the! European! Union! for! the! joint!monitoring!of!the!levels!of!mercury!released!into!the!environment.!

In! the! February! 24,! 2012,! the! Italian! LEO! Clubs! subscribed! at! the!institutional!CNR!headquarters!the!the!Agreement!between!LEO!and!CNR,! in! which! the! Italian! LEO! Clubs! have! the! opportunity! to!contribute! to! the! project!GMOS,! in! particular! about! the!Realization!and!the!Deploy!of!an!innovative!technology!designed!by!the!CNR>IIA!for! the!measurement!of! concentration! levels!and!emission!Mercury!by!organic! sources.! In!our!purposes,! there! is! the! intention!to!give!a!new! and! important! contribution! to! the! Italian! Scientific! and!Technological!Research.!!

During! the! first! year!of! the!Service!execution,! this! contribution!was!given!mainly!as!fundraising!activities!for!the!GMOS!Project.!Thus,!the!initial! proposal! for! LEO!Hunting!Mercury! is! to! carry! out! fundraising!activities!in!the!following!ways:!

• Identification! and! sale! of! a! dedicated! gadget,! realized!without! the! use! of! heavy! metals! (currently! found! in! many!consumer!goods)!or!other!harassing!substances;!

“UNILEO4LIGHT” Project Supporting*the*professional*future*of*the*students*with*impaired*vision*

The$aim$of$our$project$is$to$support$and$encourage$the$study$and$professional$growth$of$young$people$with$impaired$vision$who$decide$to$continue$their$studies$or$work$through$the$attainment$of$degrees,$diplomas$or$certificates,$increasing$the$number$of$new$subscribers$and$the$number$of$students$who$complete$the$cycle$of$university$studies.$$To$achieve$this$goal$our$project$plans$to$act$on$the$three$different$sides,$that$we$consider$highly$strategic:$

UNIVERSITIES

• We$provide$the$University$with$aids$and$technologies$that$allow$the$individual$student$to$freely$make$his$own$studies;*

• We$pass$to$each$university$know@how$and$technologies$to$prepare$teaching$materials$essential$to$the$course$of$study$of$the$student;$

• We$create$texts$already$"converted"$to$use$and$make$it$available$to$all$students$through$the$web$library$“Libro$Parlato$Lions”$(a$Lions$project$that$creates$an$online$library$of$spoken$books$and$texts$available$to$people$with$impaired$vision)$

STUDENTS WITH IMPAIRED VISION

(blind,$visually$impaired$and$dyslexic)$

Our$goal$is$to$make$it$clear$to$them$and$those$who$influence$their$choices$of$study$/$job$that$today$it$is$possible$to$overcome$their$disability$in$study$and$work$both$through$new$technologies,$and$through$sharing$successful$models$and$experiences$of$others.$We$act$to$realize$this$goal$through:$

• Social$communication$campaign$at$national$level;$• Web$portal$to$collect$academic$and$professional$experiences$of$other$guys;$

COMPANIES, INSTITUTIONS, AGENCIES

They$represent$the$side$of$supplying$of$work$and$therefore$they$should$be$made$aware$of$the$existence$of$new$skills$perfectly$achievable$by$students$with$impaired$vision.$We$act$to$realize$this$goal$through:$

• Publication$of$a$web$Portal$to$host$an$area$for$offers$/$requests$of$work;$• Interactive$forum$to$answer$to$questions$and$doubts$about$the$world$of$work;$• Organization$of$events$where$students$and$companies$meet$each$other;$• Organization$of$interactive$seminars$within$the$Universities$on$topics$related$to$the$world$of$work$

(writing$CVs,$job$offers,$job$listings$interpretation,$strategic$skills,$job$search$strategies$and$communication$systems).$

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT

Through$the$intervention$in$over$35$Universities$all$over$Italy,$Italian$Leos$help$over$1,000$students$with$impaired$vision.$And$with$many$other$Universities$Italian$Leos$have$already$made$contact$and$are$carrying$out$a$proposal$for$collaboration.$

FUND RAISING

The$funds$to$purchase$technologies$have$been$raised$by$Italian$Leos$through$the$sale$of$consumer$goods$in$public$squares$on$dates$specifically$dedicated$to$the$project.$Up@to@$date,$Italian$Leos$have$raised$over$euro$600.000$to$support$the$project.$

TECHNOLOGIES DONATED TO UNIVERSITIES

The$technologies$that$are$donated$by$Leo$Clubs$to$Universities$are$selected$through$a$careful$analysis$and$investigation$done$with$experts$and$based$on$the$report$given$by$the$students.$The$intervention$is$always$composed$of$a$provision$of$aids$for$the$blind$and$visually$impaired;$these$aids$integrate$an$allocation$basis$that$the$University$provides$for$the$use$of$these$technologies.$The$amount$of$aids$provided$is$determined$by$the$number$of$students$enrolled$in$the$University$and$can$be$integrated$during$the$implementation$period$of$the$Project$UniLeo4Light.$

We$donate$to$Universities$specific$hardware$and$software$to$help$students$with$impaired$vision.$

HARDWARE

• Board$enlarging$video$(ex:$Topaz$LCD)$that$allows$viewing$of$paper$material,$be$it$text,$images,$handwritten,$in$the$easiest$way.$

• Portable$enlarging$video$(ex:$Ruby$or$Sapphire)$• Scanner$with$character$recognition$software$and$speech$synthesizer$(ex:$Scanner$OptiBook$or$

Kurzweil)$• Maestro$System:$a$complete$Location$study$(with$pc/scanner$and$other$technologies)$for$the$blind$

students$that$converts$texts$directly$from$book$/$paper$material$

SOFTWARE

The$software$was$chosen$according$to$the$possibility$of$using$it$contemporarily$in$many$computers$in$the$same$University:$to$do$that,$the$software$in$installed$on$a$server$computer$in$the$University$network$and$all$computers$located$in$the$University$are$provided$with$our$technologies,$with$the$only$constraint$that$the$number$of$students$simultaneously$using$it$is$less$than$or$equal$to$the$number$of$licenses$donated$by$Leo$Club.$Software$used:$

• JAWS,$that$allows$users$who$are$blind$computer$use,$giving$a$voice$feedback$and,$optionally,$in$Braille;$

• MAGIC,$that$is$a$program$that$can$zoom$in$on$any$screen$application.$$$

WORK SECTION

The services “UniLeo4Light” offers for free to students with visual impairments:

Accessible interactive Forum: a "public" meeting point where the boys and all those who influence their choices (family, friends and teachers) can exhibit questions and doubts about the prospects of work that can

be reserved after the University, directly to the person skilled in the industry that give you all the tips and answers suitable.

Job offers: We have a bulletin board dedicated to job postings, because “UniLeo4Light” really wants to accompany the career of the boys, or at least try to facilitate it.

Interactive Seminars: We organize interactive seminars that will address the issues related to the inclusion in the labor market of people with vision disabilities. The seminar is organized in collaboration with the Division of Diversity Talent “Metis Openjobs”.

National Theme Studies: "From children abuse to violence against women:

Fight the silence" !

Violence!against!women!has!no!time!nor!boundaries,! is!endemic!and!spares!no!nation!or!country,!even!if!they’re!industrialized!or!developing.!

The! violence! did! not! even! know! socio>cultural! differences:! victims! and! aggressors! belong! to! all! social!classes! because,! beyond!what! is! shown! every! day! by! the!media,! the! greatest! risk! are! family!members,!husbands!and!fathers,!followed!by!friends,!neighbors,!close!acquaintances!and!work!colleagues.!According!to!statistics!and!studies,!one!in!five!women!has!suffered!in!her!life!physical!or!sexual!abuse!by!a!man.!

"We$must$consider$ that$studies$on$gender$violence$show$that$one5fifth$ to$one5quarter$of$all$women$ in$Europe$have$experienced$physical$violence$at$least$once$in$their$adult$life$and$that$more$than$1/10$of$the$women$ had$ suffered$ sexual$ violence$ involving$ the$ use$ of$ force.$ Violence$ against$ women$ is$ an$international$ and$ European$ problemand$ despite$ it$ has$ been$ discussed$ for$ decades,$ the$ international$community$has$failed$to$put$a$stop$to$this$form$of$crime$extremely$destructive.”$(Taken$from$the$report$to$the$European$Parliament$on$18.3.2011$Commission$for$Women's$Rights$and$Gender$Equality)$

The! first! cause! of! death! among!women! in! Europe! and! the!world! isn’t! road! accidents,! cancer,! hunger! or!AIDS:!IT’S!MURDER.!

We!carried!out!two!action!lines:!

1. EDUCATIONAL$

Establish! a! partnership!with! the!Ministry! of! Education! and! ultimately!with! the! education! institutions,! in!order! to! provide! education! on! gender>based! violence! with! professionals,! police! forces,! health!professionals,! education! and! support! staff! for! victims! sometimes! unaware.! Develop! a! Ethics! paper!with!students!in!a!peer!education!that!involves!them!all.!This!will!be!useful!to!involve!the!elected!representative!of!students'!council,!as!representatives!of!the!students!from!all!over!Italy.!

Promote! in! schools! and! places! where! young! people! meet,! a! gender! culture! that! guides! toward! the!promotion!of!differences.!

In!the!area!of!information!and!communication,!we!need!to!spread!the!culture!of!respect!for!the!women’s!image,!opposing!the!use!of!messages!which!are!detrimental!to!itself.!

In!schools!we!plain!meetings,!in!each!of!which!there!will!be!a!theme!to!be!developed,!with!the!presence!of!two!teachers!and!a!tutor.!Using!smart!board,!movies,!drama!and!interviews,!reports!on!topics!foreordained!will! be! carried! out,! as!well! as! comparisons! and! group! discussions,! presentations! of! problems! and! cases,!work! in!small!groups,!we!will!arrange!meetings!with!readings!marathons!on!the! issue!of!gender!violence!and!collections!of!dedicated!films!and!clinical!cases!will!be!broadeasted.!

In!addition,!here!will!be!seminars!on!human!rights.!

2. SUPPORT$

Greater!will!be!the!knowledge!related!to!gender>based!violence,!the!greater!will!be!the!awareness!of!the!public!in!this!regard.!!

Promote!respect!for!women!and!the!culture!of!equality!between!genders!everywhere!and!in!every!way:!at!home,!in!schools,!in!workplaces,!in!immigrant!communities,!and!in!society!in!general.!

For!this! it’s!necessary!to!carry!out!communication!campaigns,!aiming!at!prevention!and!public!awareness!against!all!forms!of!physical,!moral,!psychological!and!sexual!violence!against!women.!

The!different!activities!can!be!organized!within!the!own!Leo!club!or!intermeeting!with!other!Leo!and!Lions!Clubs,!also!trying!to!involve!as!much!as!possible!people!from!the!various!Districts!of!Italy.!

Any!support!or!initiative!by!members!or!Clubs!may!provide!a!valuable!support!to!the!project.!

Recognizing!the!importance!of!social!networks!as!media!of!communication!for!young!people,!the!National!co>ordination! of! the! theme!has! created! a! Facebook! page! called! “Combattiamo! il! silenzio”("We! fight! the!silence.")!

The! page! has! many! members,! most! of! them! share! commercials,! news,! current! events,! flash! mob,! TV!programs!but!also!activities!and!initiatives!promoted!by!their!club.!

The!OBJECTIVES!!!

1ST$ TO$ INFORM$ teenagers$ about$ fighting$ tumours,$ and$ the$ possibility$ of$ avoiding$ some,$ as$ well$ as$ the$

importance$of$an$early$diagnosis$and$the$necessity$of$being$primarily$involved.$

2nd$TO$REASSURE.$It$is$certain$that$knowing$how$to$deal$with$a$disease,$and$the$fact$that$it$can$be$defeated$

gives$us$reassurance.$$The$tranquillity$that$comes$from$knowing$this$allows$us$to$live$with$a$greater$peace$

of$mind.$$

WHY!SHOULD!WE!TALK!TO!TEENAGERS!ABOUT!TUMOURS?!!

1H Because$some$tumours,$such$us$melanoma$and$testicular$cancer,$can$also$affect$young$people.$$

2H Because,$even$if$most$types$of$tumours$appear$in$middle$or$advanced$age,$many$start$their$course$

in$early$life$and$thus$it$is$necessary$to$let$young$people$know$what$to$do$and$when$to$start$doing$

something.$$

3H Because$ many$ causes$ of$ a$ large$ number$ of$ tumours$ are$ due$ to$ gene$ mutations$ induced$ by$

“environmental$factors$and$inappropriate$life$styles”.$Knowing$and$avoiding$this$at$an$early$age$can$

reduce$these$“risk$factors”$that$in$turn$reduce$the$genetic$mutations.$$

4H Because$the$early$diagnosis$of$some$types$of$tumours$with$or$by$means$of$periodic$checkHups$even$

when$we$feel$healthy,$requires$the$commitment$of$each$single$person.$$

In!synthesis,!the!fight!against!tumours!requires!knowledge!and!personal!commitment,!it!requires!a!way!

of!thinking!or!a!culture…!and!school!is!the!cradle!of!this!culture.!

“Educating$young$people$to$consider$life$a$precious$thing$and$to$feel$personally$involved$in$its$defence”$can$

be$considered$the$main$commitment$of$the$LIONS$and$LEO.$The$Voluntary$Associations$of$different$cities,$

with$respect$to$similar$already$existing$initiatives,$are$invited$to$collaborate$and$contribute$to$the$spreading$

of$the$project.$$

IMPLEMENTATION!METHODOLOGY!!

1. The$slides$for$the$lessons$and$the$relative$captions$are$ready,$divided$into$chapters$and$available$in$

electronic$ format.$ A$multidisciplinary$ scientific$ committee$ periodically$ updates$ the$ lessons.$ Each$

student$receives$a$3Hpage$coloured$leaflet$with$the$synthesis$of$the$information$received.$$

2. The$different$LIONS$and$LEO$clubs$are$invited$to$commit,$on$a$yearly$basis,$the$secondary$schools$

to$organize$informationHtraining$meetings$with$3rd$or$4

rd$years$students.$$

$3. The$ conferences$ are$ held$ by$ doctors,$ also$ non$ Lions$ members,$ but$ the$ meetings$ are$ always$

coordinated$by$a$Lions$member$who$keeps$contact$with$the$central$committees.$The$students$are$requested$ to$ fill$ out$ a$ learningHsatisfaction$ questionnaire$ in$ order$ to$ monitor$ and$ improve$ the$project.$The$collected$data$is$elaborated$at$the$head$office$and$communicated$to$the$teachers.$$

$The$centralized$Lions$coordination$guarantees$that$the$project$will$be$shared$and$the$main$aims$respected,$that$is:$“to$give$teenagers$free$and$useful$information$without$ulterior$motives”$.$$$PROJECT!MARTINA!is!a!“FREE”!service!for!Lions!clubs!and!for!schools.!!The$website$www.progettomartina.it$contains$all$the$necessary$ information$but$only$the$coordinator$of$a$club$receives$the$password$to$access$the$reserved$files$from$the$coordinating$committee.$The$initiative$ is$named$ Project$ MARTINA$ in$ memory$ of$ a$ young$ girl,$ Martina,$ affected$ by$ cancer,$ who$ persistently$requested$that$“teenagers$be$precisely$informed$and$educated$about$caring$for$their$own$health....”$!DISCRTICT’S(RESULTS:(DISTRICT( CLUB.AREA( NUMBER(OF(SCHOOLS(Ab! “YOUTH AND ROAD SAFETY”

In#the#last#decade#in#Italy,#road#accidents#have#caused#the#loss#of#about#135,000#young#people#between#15#and#24#years#old.#It’s#a#phenomenon#that#continues#to#rise!#

The# size# of# the# phenomenon#makes# our# service# particularly# important# and# of# great# social# value# for# our#Country.#

The#object#of#the#campaign#is#to#promote#a#culture#of#road#safety#and#reduce#the#rising#death#on#the#roads#and#traffic#crashes.#

The# Service# is# directed# to# all# citizens# with# special# consideration# to# people# of# our# age.# The# project# was#structured#on#main#behaviors#that#cause#the#majority#of#accidents:#

• no#use#of#individual#protection#systems#(seat%belts%and%child%seats);#• overspeeding;#• use#of%alcohol%and%drugs;#• lack#of#respect#for#pedestrians.#

Our#aim#during#this#social#year#has#been#to#raise#awareness#of#the#citizens#on#the#importance#of#changing##behavior#and#their#daily#routine,#to#obtain#greater#security#for#themselves#and#for#other#people.#

Italian#Leos#have#made#numerous#training#and#prevention#activities:#• meetings#in#schools;#

• Grand#Prix#of#security;#

• safe#driving#courses#with#final#test#and#issue#of#certificate;#

• to#provide#information#about#the#risks#related#to#driving#in#altered#psychoNphysical#conditions;#

The#partnership#with#Lions#Clubs#Sponsors,#Institutions,#law#enforcement#agencies#and#other#organizations#that# deal# with# the# Road# Safety# has# been# successful.# The# cooperation# with# different# people# can# help# to#reduce#road#victims!#

For#this#reason#we#have#decided#to#undersign#the#European%Road%Safety%Charter.#It#is#a#program#in#which#all# signatories# can# share# the# initiatives# carried# out# in# order# to# learn# from# each# other.# In# this# way,# the#European#road#safety#can#be#improved.#

With#the#project#"Am%I%able%to%drive%tonight?"#we#wish#to#contrast#saturday#nights#contributing#to#decrease#the#number#of#accidents#involving#young#people#and#the#number#of#accidents.#

Next#summer#we#will#distribute#disposable#breathalyzers#at#the#exits#of#discos#so#that#all#young#people#will#be#able#to#evaluate#their#own#state#alcohol#and#understand#if#they#can#drive.#

Our#main#aim#is#to#make#aware#young#people#of#having#a#responsible#driving#and#behavior#and#moreover#it#is# important#to#have#a#greater#consciousness#of# the#dangers#which#can#be#caused#by#the#use#of#alcoholic#beverages.#!

If we just have a look to the story of our own association, going back one day before that day in 1957 in Pennsylvania, Mr. Graver was just coaching a baseball team and the guys were just students at Abington High School. But they had a good idea, a really good idea, and they built up a wide spread association that still carries on outstanding social service activities all over the world. We, the members of the Italian Association of Leo Club - Multidistretto LEO 108 I.T.A.L.Y, are one of the constituting parts of this wide spread association and we feel strongly the importance of following the idea to provide the youth of our nation with an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community. In 2009 we also had an idea, we believe another good idea: the Italian Leo Football Team, which was given birth by the strong will of realizing a dream and the simple consideration that sport is one of the best means at our hands in order to share universal values - such as equality, friendship and freedom - and to let different people working together to achieve outstanding goals. In 2010, the Italian Leo Football team merged into the Italian Lions and Leo Football Team and became a joint program of Italian Leos and Lions, open to whoever wanted to join in and play. In these four years since its creation the Italian Lions and Leo Football Team has grown up and has become a well-known reality in fund raising projects all over Italy, more than 18.000 euros in the last 12 months.

The! institution!of! the!Global!Membership!Team!and! the!Global! Leadership!Team!(GMT7GLT! from!now!on)!is!a!quite!new!experience!for!Italian!Leos.!!In!the!previous!years!leoism!in!Italy!always!found!it's!source!for!a!range!of!activities!that!we!can!resume!as!"member's!developement"!in!different!committees!and/or!teams!such!as!M.E.L.R.!(Membership!Extention!Leadership!Retention).!!

As!we!know!2010!the!Association's!Board!decided!to!replace!the!old!M.E.L.R.!committee!with!the!GMT7GLT!ones,!in!order!tu!put!up!all!necessary!means!to!ensure!the!reach!of!some!main!objectives!like,!for!example:!_!Create!a!structure!able! to!help!Members!with! issues! like! loss!of!enthusiasm,!participation!and! involve7ment;!!_!Give!to!new!members!instruments!and!information!useful!for!informing!them!in!depth!about!every!side!of!the!Association;!!_!Put!up!work!methos!for!Officers!and!Presidents!(from!Club!to!District)!for!giving!the!Association!the!nec7essary!continuity!in!the!direction!roles,!shaping!up!Members!aware!of!their!duties!and!enthusiastic!in!doing!them!by!the!use!of!experience.!

These!were!our!tasks!when!MD!108!decided!to!enstablish!the!GMT!and!GLT!areas!of!intervention!and!this!has!been!the!path!that!we!tried!to!follow.!!In!this!paper!our!task!was!to!synthethize!how!we!moved!along!the!way!described!above!and!what!kind!of!material!results!we!tried!to!reach!by!the!use!of!cooperation!of!GMT7GLT!members.!!!!1.!Context!of!MD!108!!

To!this!day!Multiple!District!108! I.T.A.L.Y.!counts!more!than!4.000!members!divided! in!about!400!Clubs!grouped!in!17!Districts.!!

The!composition!of!GMT7GLT!committee!had!to!take!count!of!Italian!leoism's!peculiar!characteris7tics,!first!of!all!given!by!the!average!age!of!italian!Members.!!Italian!membership!is!a!phenom!that!finds!it's!staples!in!Omega!Members!(i.e.!the!ones!from!18!to!30!years!old).!Considering!their!age!these!people!are!University!students!or!young!professionals!that!are!beginning!their! careers,! it's!obvious! to!consider! that! this! context!has!an! influence!on! the!way! Italian!Leos!organize!their!activities.!!Essentially!we!are!young!men!and!women!who!have!to!find!the!right!balance!beetween!different!needs,!on!one!hand!work!and!everyday!life,!on!the!other!everything!connected!with!the!Association.!This!can!be!iden7tified!as!the!distinctive!character!of!italian!Leos!and,!above!all,!this!is!our!propeller!to!the!pursuit!of!excel7lence!in!every!side!of!the!membership!(e.g.!services!and!friendship,!just!to!mention!two!of!them).!The!con7text!we!have! to!move! into! is!complex,!but! this!complexity! represents!perfectly!a! reality!made!by!people!who!take!very!seriously!the!committment!inside!their!membership!and!work!very!hard,!both!in!the!associa7tion!and!in!everyday!life,!to!push!forward!their!dreams.!

The! institution!of!a!GMT7GLT!committee! in!MD!108! is!a!challenge!and!the!Leos!appointed!of! this!duty!tried!to!organize!their!work!during!this!year!to!produce!something!suitable!for!any!kind!of!Member!part!of!MD!108,! something!useful! for!a!very! complex! reality!where! Italian! Leos!aren't! just! young!kids!or!teenagers! involved! in!a!program!managed!by!older!people! (i.e.! the!Lions'!Club!Memebrs),!but!are!young!men!and!women!in!the!middle!of!an!age!crucial! for!the!rest!of!their! life!that!decide!to!sacrifice!some!(in!many!cases!a!lot)!of!their!spare!time!to!put!themselves!in!service!for!the!others.!!!!!

2.!GMT!and!GLT!working!together!! MD!108!also!took!the!decision!to!join!the!forces!between!the!above!mentioned!areas!of!interven7

tion!(as!you!may!have!already!noticed).!

The!GMT!and!the!GLT! functions!and!duties!were!put! in! the!hands!of!a! team!formed!by! the!17! in!charge!

VDPs,!with!the!coordination!of!the!MDVP!and!the!undersigned.!The!conduction!of!our!work!during!the!year!

gave!us!essentially!two!useful!results:!

_! First! of! all! the! incoming!DPs!begun! to! know!each!other,! progressively!developing! the!will! to! join! their!

commitment!to!work!together!the!next!year;!

_!In!second!instance!we!were!able!to!give!ourselves!a!well!defined!goal!to!achieve!(i.e.!what!we!will!expose!

in!the!very!next!paragraph).!

3.!New!edition!of!“ManuaLeo”!! It’s!as!easy!as! it!gets! to!consider!that! it’s!not!possible!to! follow!to!many!objective!with!the!same!

quality!during!a!year,!so!our!team!decided!to!give!itself!one!simple!objective:!the!correction,!upgrading!and!

new!edition!of!“ManuaLeo”!(i.e.!the!“Leo!Manual”)!a!simple!booklet!(about!200!pages)!that!gives!utility!in7

formation’s!about!the!Association!in!general!along!with!tips!and!instructions!about!all!the!aspects!of!a!Leo’s!

membership,!from!Club!to!Multiple!District.!

! At! the! time!of!writing!of! this!paper! the!Team! is! finalizing! the! last!details! about! the!manual! (e.g.!

cover,!printing!etc.)!and!we!plan!to!deliver!one!copy!for!every!DP!at!the!MD!108!National!Conference!the!

This!new!edition!is!basically!an!upgrading!of!the!last!available!edit,!dated!back!to!2006,!we!decided!to!make!

some!corrections,!inserting!new!paragraphs!and/or!chapters,!re7ordering!the!graphic!layout!and!generally!

give!to!“ManuaLeo”!the!shape!for!affording!the!years!to!come,!to!be!updated!as!much!as!possible!for!new!

and!old!Leos.!

magazine,&our&district&and&national& initiatives&have&travelled&up&and&down&our&country,& reaching&not&only&

Italian&Lions'&houses,&but&also&our&Leo&houses,& thanks& to&an&agreement&with&Sirio&Marcianò,& the&director,&

!!“The%difference…%I%work!”%was%born%as%a%project%of#twinned#Leo$Discricts&108&Ia1"!108$Ia2$"!108$Ia3$to#help#young&people&with& a& handicap& to& enter& the&professional&world,& by&means& of& specialized* training* courses,*customized+by+Cisco+System+to+create+network+experts.!The$ realization* * of* this* project* by* the* Leo* ! is# possible# through# the# collaboration# and# supervision# of# the#Fondazione# Alessio# Tavecchio# ONLUS,# who! assures& that& the& different! training' courses' take' place' in'specialized*academies*properly*coordinated.!Once%the%protocol%of%the%project%is%defined%by%the%Fondazione,%the$implementation$is$taken$care$by$the$Leo$Club$with$a$direct$contact$with$the$academies.!!

SIM%PATIA!–!SANITARY!RESIDENCE!AND!DAY!CENTRE!FOR!PEOPLE!WITH!DISABILITY!!

Sim%patia!was!born!in!1989.!Its!first!aim!was!to!create!a!structure!able!to!accommodate!people!affected!by!serious! disability.! The! Sim%patia! building!was! inaugurated! in! 1999;! today! it! is! a! RSD! (Residenza! Sanitaria!Disabili!–!sanitary!residence!for!people!with!disabilities)!and!a!CDD!(Centro!Diurno!Disabili!–!day!center!for!people! with! disabilities)! recognized! by! Regione! Lombardia.! It! offers! permanent! or! temporary! assisted!residence!to!people!who!have!very! limited!functional!autonomy;!these!people!have!very!serious!physical!handicap!and!they!need!a!kind!of!assistance!that!cannot!be!provided!by!their!own!families.!In!2008,!Sim%patia! launched!the!project!“Toward! Independence”,! that!provides!houses!where!technology!allows! people! with! disabilities! to! do! everyday! actions! without! any! help.! Every! guest! can! express! his!personality! and! his! potential.! Sim%patia! also! developed! a! laboratory! for! technological! and! computer!research.!In!2008,!they!have!been!recognized!from!Regione!Lombardia!as!Research!Center,!because!of!the!innovations! they! made! in! technology.! As! a! research! center,! I Giovani x i giovani

!‘Giovani!x!iGiovani’!is!a!sport!event!which!takes!place!every!year!in!our!District!since!the!early!80’s.!!

During!this!event!disabled!athletes!take!part!in!different!sport!races!or!matches,!showing!their!skills!before!

hundreds!of!young!people,!aged!from!primary!until!the!high!school.!What!the!‘Giovani!x!iGiovani’!aims!to!

reach!is!to!spread!around!the!importance!of!practicing!sports!and!to!show!the!potential!of!these!activities!

in! order! to! improve! integration! and! sensibilization,! expecially! in! schools.! This! had! become! an! important!

Ricreativa! ,! which! means! that! this! is! an! association! aiming! to! help! people! with! mental! and! physical!

handicaps!by!!riding!horses.!In!addition,!another!purpose!of!A.N.I.R.E.!is!to!improve!the!development!of!the!

THE “CRISTINA PROJECT”

The!“Cristina!Project”! is!dedicated!to!the!memory!of!a!special!person:!Cristina.!She!was!a!dear!friend!of!ours!from! San! Donà! di! Piave! (Venice),! who! died! very! young! because! of! a! rare! form! of! cancer! called!rhabdomyosarcoma.!She!devoted!her!last!few!months!of!life!to!start!the!collection!of!funds!in!order!to!support!the!medical! research! for!her!kind!of!disease.!This!was!certainly!an!act!of! courage!of!hers!and!hope! towards!other!people.!After!her!death,!her! family! and! friends!would! like! to! continue!her!project! in!her!memory.The!rhabdomyosarcoma!is!a!neoplasia!of!soft!tissues:!it!is!very!uncommon!in!adults!as!it!constitutes!less!than!1%!of!all!adults’!tumors.!This! is!the!reason!why!there!are!so! little! information!on!its!clinical!and!byological!features!and!on!its!most!effective!therapy.!On!the!contrary,!the!rhabdomyosarcoma!is!relatively!common!in!children!–!representing!more! than! 50%! of! the! sarcoma! present! during! childhood! –! and! it! differs! from! other! kinds! of!sarcoma!due!to!a!strong!chemosensitivity!and!radiosensitivity.!Over! the! latest!30!years,! the!use!of!protocols!prescribing! an! intensive! chemotherapy,! surgery! and! radiotherapy! has! gradually! increased! the! number! of!children!who!can!recover!from!this!illness.!!

Presently! about! 70%! of! patients! suffering! from! rhabdomyosarcoma! in! pediatric! age! recover.! Such!improvement!has!not!occurred! in!adult!patients! instead.!However,!past!experiences!proved! that! treatments!similar! to! those! used! for! other! sarcomas,! and! different! from! those! used! for! children,! lead! to! unsatisfactory!outcomes.!For!such!reason!a!collaboration!has!been!set!forth!between!the!Operating!Department!for!Medical!Oncology!1!of!the!Oncological!Venetian!Institute!(IOV)!of!Padua!and!the!Italian!Group!on!soft!tissues!sarcomas!in! childhood,! with! registered! office! at! the! Pediatric! Oncohaematology! Clinic! of! Padua,! in! order! to! evaluate!whether!the!use!of!protocols!prescribing!intensive!chemotherapy!associated!with!surgery!and/or!radiotherapy,!could! improve! the! medical! results! also! with! regard! to! adult! people.! Leo for L’Aquila Leo$District$108/A,$ through$several$ fund$raising$activities$was$able$ to$give$a$ remarkable$ financial$ support$(3500€)$for$the$restoration$of$the$frescos$in$the$Convent$of$san$Giuliano$in$L'Aquila,$badly$damaged$by$the$earthquake$in$2009.$

The$District$has$also$started$a$fruitful$cooperation$with$some$schools$on$the$theme$"Sexually$transmitted$diseases",$in$order$to$inform$young$studens,$with$the$help$of$experts,$about$risks$and$dangers$of$these$diseases.$The$huge$and$attentive$partecipation$and$the$good$feedbacks$of$the$professors$encouraged$the$Leos$to$continue$and$support$this$project$also$for$the$next$future.$$In$the$last$few$weeks$Leo$members$have$started$the$service$"Clean$the$District",$with$the$aim$to$tidy$up$rubbish$from$parks$and$beaches.$

It! 'an!incentive!for!everyone!to!bring!out!their!creativity!and!their!artistic!talent!to!appreciate!the!many!talents!in!our! region.! This! project!was! chosen! as! the! Theme!Operative!District! In!2006!at!the!Umberto(I°(Polyclinic,!in!the!Pediatric(Hematology(and!Pediatric(Emergency(Departments,!there!are!children(suffering(and!fighting!against!leukemia(and(severe(immune(disorders,!staying(in(sterile(rooms( for(weeks! and!weeks,!or!arriving!at! the!Pediatric!Emergency!Department! for!acute!diseases,!with!

desperate(families(waiting.!There!are!not!enough!beds!for!moms,!who!are!forced!to!sleep!on!iron!chairs.!

Next!year!Logistics!have( improved! in!almost!all! the!rooms!of! the!department,!but! there! is!an! immediate!

In!fact,!given!the!complexity!of!specialized!care,!and!the!fact!that!therapies!are!not!always!adequate!at!all!

hospitals,!patients!often!need!to!pay!for!transportation.!

#The$service$chosen$by$Leo$District$108$La$for$the$biennium$201292014$has$as$its$object$the$purchase$for$the$IRCCS$ Stella$Maris,$ hospital$ research$ in$ the$ field$ of$ Childhood$ and$ Adolescence$Neuropsychiatry,$ closely$linked$to$the$University$of$Pisa,$of$a$ tool$called$AV_DESK$2.1$ .$ $This$ tool$ is$useful$ to$treat$ in$children$and$adolescents,$through$compensatory$strategies$based$on$the$development$of$eye$movements$and$body,$a$particular$form$of$cortical$blindness,$the$visual$field$defects$from$brain$injury.$Delivered$in$turn$to$families$for$ short$periods$of$ therapy,$ this$ tool$ can$help$ so$many$ children$and$adolescents$with$ cortical$ blindness$who$come$to$the$Institute$from$all$over$Italy,$allowing$them$to$make$an$intensive$training$at$your$location,$monitored$via$the$network$by$doctors$of$Stella$Maris,$rather$than$requiring$the$current$hospitalization$of$three$/$four$weeks.$The$Leo$District$108$La$has$committed$itself$to$collect$over$the$two$year$period$201292014$a$sum$of$€$20,000$which$will$allow$the$purchase$of$AV_DESK$2.1$$

Leo –Lions Stelle in strada The%project%brings%Stars%in%the%street%every%Thursday%of%the%week%in%the%central%station%of%the%city%of%Naples%from%300%to%over%700%hot%meals%to%the%homeless%in%the%city.%District%project%is%the%most%heard%and%followed.%with%the%help%of%a%benefactor,%a%restaurateur%in%the%city%of%Naples,%and%the%leo%lions%roll%up%their%sleeves%to%

give%a%little%help%to%the%invisible%of%cities.%

The! basic! idea! is:! "Let! us! to! commit!ourselves!through!movement!to!help!those!who!can!and!will!reacquire!it!"!In! Italy! several!places!already!use! this! technology!but! !unfortunately! it! still! isn’t!present! in!!!Sicily.! Our! aim! is! to! reach! a! first! step! that! allows! us! to! buy! the! first! part!
