Introduction This report summarizes the grants activities and publications of the University of the District of Columbia’s  College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Science (CAUSES) for Fiscal Year (FY) 2014, which extends from October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014. Grant activities include grant money awarded and grants submitted from external sources. This report is structured to reflect activities of the five CAUSES Landgrant Centers as well as the Academic Programs in CAUSES:

Center for Urban Agriculture & Gardening Education

Center for Sustainable Development o Water Resources Research Institute

Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health o Institute of Gerontology

Center for 4-H and Youth Development

Architectural Research Institute

Grants received by academic departments are included in the total grant money awarded. In FY 2014 CAUSES Academic Programs  were  comprised  of  five  Bachelor’s  degree  programs in Architecture, Environmental Science, Health Education, Nursing and Nutrition and Dietetics; plus three  Master’s  degree programs in Architecture, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Water Resources Management.

In FY 2014, CAUSES was awarded a total of $6,171,0361. Since its inception in FY 2010, CAUSES has been effective in increasing the amount of grant money received annually,  in  line  with  the  College’s overall growth.

For more information about UDC CAUSES grant activities, publications and programs, please contact Dr.  Sabine  O’Hara,  Dean  and Director of Landgrant Programs or William Hare, Associate Dean of Landgrant Programs, at [email protected] or at [email protected].

1Grants awarded in FY 2014 total $5,971,442. This includes a 4H Life DC grant ($37,322), the Expanded Food and Nutrition Program award ($110,505), and the Water Resources Research Act of 1984 grant allocation ($92,335). Due to delays in several award letters, the UDC Office of Sponsored Programs did not include these grants in FY 2014. The Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students, which was submitted by UDC CAUSES is included in the UDC-CC grant award figures. For the purposes of annual comparisons, the graph above uses the OSP figure of $6,171,036

Grants Submitted in FY 2014 by Landgrant Center

Some of the grants included were submitted in FY 2014 and are still pending. Two pending grants that were submitted in FY 2014 are not included since they cut across several of the landgrant centers. They are (1) a Sustainability Research Networks grant in the amount of $10,214,374 and a SPARC-EMT grant in the amount of $750,000. The Water Resources Research Institute did submit any grant awarded in FY 2014 during the same Fiscal Year.

Publications and Presentations As a Landgrant College, CAUSES must be relevant to the region it serves. Consistent with its mission, CAUSES therefore conducts applied research that “…improves the Quality of Life and Economic Opportunity of people and communities in  the  District  of  Columbia”. Disseminating our research findings is an integral part of the CAUSES mission. UDC CAUSES faculty and landgrant specialists accomplish this task through publications, lectures and participation in professional meetings and associations. Due to the review process, publications may undergo a lengthy process between completion of the work and its publication. To provide a more comprehensive picture  of  the  College’s  publication activities, the following table includes the number of books, articles and research reports published between 2010 and 2014, as well as the number of speaking engagements and invited presentations of CAUSES faculty members and landgrant specialists
