1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In 2012, we continued working on the Action Plan for the 2009-2012 period after recognising ADVID as the
operator of the wine cluster from the Douro Region. We developed the anchor projects that had been identified
during recognition of the cluster and developed communication and dissemination skills, strengthened networks,
promoted the transfer of knowledge from the science and technology sector to wine companies and improved
technical support to Members.
Of all our 2012 activities, the following stand out:
The seminar Climate Change in Wine Production: A Global Overview and Assessment of the Situation of the
Douro Region at the Luso-American Foundation (Fundação Luso-Americana) in Lisbon, and at Porto Customhouse,
on 12 and 13 April.
In this seminar, findings from a study on the impact of climate change on viticulture in the RDD (Região Demarcada
do Douro) were presented by Prof. Gregory Jones of the Department of Environmental Studies at Southern Oregon
University (USA) in collaboration with ADVID. In addition, the effect of climate change in Portugal and Europe were
presented by Prof. Pedro Miranda (Nova de Lisboa University) and Prof. João Santos (Trás-os-Montes and Alto
Douro University), as well as the company strategy of Sogrape Vinhos SA, which was presented by Mr. George
Sandeman, and Symington Family Estates, as represented by the engineer Charles Symington.
The Grapevine and Wine Institute, the Douro and Porto Wine Institute, ViniPortugal and the Luso-American
Foundation joined up to support this event, in addition to the Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial
Planning, Prof. Assunção Cristas, who chaired the seminar opening in Lisbon.
Biodiversity Week (28-31 May) included the participation of Prof. Steve Wratten (Bio-Protection Research Centre
of New Zealand), Dr. Howard Thistlewood (Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre of Canada), Prof. Laura Torres and
Prof. Guilhermina Marques (UTAD) and the companies Real Companhia Velha, Sogevinus Fine Wines and Duorum
Vinhos, represented by Mr. Rui Soares, Mr. José Manso and Mr. José Maria Soares Franco, respectively. In addition,
the "Associação Portuguesa para a Diversidade da Videira" (Portuguese Association for Grapevine Diversity)
participated, as represented by Dr. António Graça. Several activities were developed as follows:

Birds and their role in biodiversity. Example of "Black Wheatear" (Bird of the Port Wine), Quinta de Castelo
Melhor, Castelo Melhor.
"Biodiversity - Added Value in Wine?" institutional module in Infowine.fórum2012, Vila Real.
UNESCO mission reception, as an interlocutor entity, by invitation of the Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment
and Spatial Planning. The mission was to analyse the condition of the Douro World Heritage site and the impact of

the Foz-Tua dam. This involvement culminated with an opinion about the "Impact of Hydroelectric Foz-Tua on Wine
Production", as requested by the mission head for UNESCO.
Raising awareness in the Secretary of State for Rural Development on the issue of Flavescence dorée
phytoplasma, which culminated with the drafting of the National Action Plan to Combat Flavescence Dorée
Phytoplasma by the Working Group formed for this purpose, with which ADVID became integrated.
Meeting with the University of Porto in order to involve the scientific community of the largest Portuguese
University in solving the winemaking problems of the Douro Region. This action resulted in a visit by 30 researchers
from various colleges and research Centres from the UP in the Douro Region on 4 May and 8 October. Researchers
covered issues relating to viticulture needs (mechanisation, erosion and landscape management) and oenological
needs (maturity, harvest, grape-wine transfer quality, wine making and environmental management). As result, the
first working theme was identified, namely, mechanisation.
The ADVID 2012 award to Mr. Cincinnato Costa for his work "General phenological model to characterise the
timing of flowering and veraison of Vitis vinifera L." as developed by Amber K. Parker and C. Van Leeuwen - Enita,
Université de Bordeaux and I. G. de Cortázar-Atauri from the I. Chuine Fonctionelle du Centre d'Ecologie et
Evolutive in Montpellier. The ceremony took place at the General Assembly of 13 December 2013 at Quinta do
Vallado and was attended by the honouree's granddaughter, Mrs. D. Maria Eduarda Costa Macedo, who presented
the award to work coordinator Prof. van Leeuwen.
We highlight two factors relevant to the development of the Viticulture of the Douro Region program from 2012:
The publication of the book "A Climate Assessment for the Douro Wine Region: An Examination for the
Past, Present and Future Conditions for Wine Production", which resulted from work developed within
the anchor project called "Climate Changes".
Knowledge transmission to RDD grapevine growers by workshops/conferences (18), training/classes (6),
informational brochures (15), technical books, technical notes (1), newsletters (10) and lists of plant
protection products (7).
Knowledge produced and disclosed in talks/seminars and technical-scientific papers (28);
A new, more functional website that provides all available information
To satisfy the members' needs, the following services were implemented:
• Measurements of grapevine water relations, by assessing predawn leaf water potential and the Sarmento
hydraulic potential;
• Technical support for organic viticulture as presented by 3 technicians with appropriate training and a workshop
on "strategies for weed control."
In short, we have taken another step to consolidate the position of ADVID as a platform for disseminating
knowledge and examining issues among universities, research organisations and wine companies, which enhances

the competitiveness of the wine sector and encourages entrepreneurship and innovation.

4. OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGY
The three-year-old wine cluster of the Douro Region has the mission of “streamlining and consolidating the wine
production in the Douro region through a technological and sustainable strategy applied to their stakeholders”,
whose vision points to an "environmental, economic and socially sustainable sector, excited by a culture of network
cooperation to reduce threats and optimise opportunities".
To pursue the mission, Cluster Wines of RDD presents the following strategic objectives:
Increase the number of associates and, consequently, the resources to develop and boost the Cluster;
Promote and increase investment in R&D and company innovation through action projects to add value to
grapevine-wine activities;
Increase the level of technical and economical skills for the sector as a competitive advantage for the
companies in Portugal and worldwide;
Optimise, increase and transmit knowledge within the region as a way to improve viticultural practices,
increasing the value of local human capital;
Development of methods to favour the operating efficiency of grapevine-wine production;
Raising public and private funding for the Region;
Establish platforms of scientific knowledge and support initiatives for economic agents to innovate
processes and products;
Creation of services to support companies.
To meet these goals, a set of initiatives was defined and integrated into an action plan focusing on the innovation,
qualification and modernisation of companies in the sector, which will encourage the emergence of agglomeration
economies through cooperation and networking.
The action plan has a mobilising nature that potentially generates positive externalities for the cluster agents and
the wine and grapevine goals include:
Anchor Projects and Strategic Lines of Development, with a high degree of partner participation, both
from the consortia and groups with common interests;
Complementary Projects, intended for individual actions or companies in cooperation, for which incentive
lines are available with positive outcomes for integrated actions within the cluster objectives;
Webcasts of meetings and workshops with cluster partners and counterparts.
Encouragement of Communication and Transmission of Knowledge through the production of support

With respect to the negative variation in the number of affiliates, the reason is essentially related to a reduction in
the number of individual members. However, there was an increase in the value generated by quotas due to a
significant increase in the number of collective members, as shown in graph I.

With respect to other indicators, deviation occurred as a consequence of the current situation and lack of tender for
public financing for the Strategic Lines of Development (anchor projects), which has implications for the various
planned activities.
We choose not to consider the indicators “Increased spending on R&D in the Cluster”, “Increase the RDD
attractiveness – Number of visitors”, “Reduction of production costs” or “Number of companies that changed from
SMEs to large companies” because of the difficulty in obtaining accurate figures to measure these indicators and

6. RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES (R&D)
6.1. Anchor Projects
6.1.1. Climate Changes
The development of this anchor project was based on three complementary actions: “Evaluation of the climate of
the Douro Region – by analysing the past, present and future climate behaviour to produce wine” as well as by
using the definitions of efficient adaptation and by forecasting strategy influences on wine quality. These actions,
which were promoted and sponsored by the Douro Region Wine Cluster, have integrated various important players
from the “ClimeVineSafe” projects, who had the task of developing short-term measures to mitigate the effects of
climate change and support the “Evolution Modelling of Wine Quality in the RDD” project.
6.1.1.1 Impact of Climate Change on Viticulture in the Douro Region
To carry out this anchor project component dedicated to understanding the climate in the Douro Region, the ADVID
collaborated with prestigious American scientist Professor. Dr. Gregory Jones (Southern Oregon University), an
expert on the effects of climate change on viticulture. The work consisted in the analysis, stabilisation and
credibility of existing climate databases and structuring new approaches to interpret the regional climate,
contributing to a better understanding, which is an essential condition for projecting future scenarios. The main
2012 results of this collaboration were the following activities:
Conclusion of tasks contracted in collaboration with Professor Gregory Jones (Southern Oregon University,
Oregon USA), relative to the component "Climate Assessment in the Douro Region" as well as the support
for complementary studies on atmospheric circulation effects in the development of grapevine and local
production, support for the development and calibration of a reference index (benchmark) to the vintage
quality, product development to improve the spatial resolution of climate data for the region and the

development and calibration of a zoning model for local production variability and phenology mapping of
the Douro Region.

Supporting benchmark development to assess the quality of the harvest was achieved with the participation of
Professor Gregory Jones by following the collaboration agreement with ADVID.

6.1.1.4 Management of grapevine water and heat stress
This project aimed to explore the effects of different water regimes on the viticultural and oenological behaviour of
the Touriga Nacional grape variety. This project started in 2012, and the Quinta dos Aciprestes, Quinta do Noval
and Quintas da Canameira e Grifo were used as reference plots in the high Douro region.
With the extension of the spatial monitoring of grapevine water status for the high Douro region, we sought to
assess the basis for services development for members, which started in 2012. Three farms have acceded to this
process (see Point 8 - Services). In brief, the objectives and work performed were completed in the Quinta dos
Aciprestes (Soutelo do Douro).
In this experiment, the vine water status had been monitored since 2002 and was subject to three drop-by-drop
irrigation depths (0%, 30% and 60% of ETc - Corrected Potential Evapotranspiration). Predawn leaf water potential
follow-up was made between June and the end of September.
We observed the maturation evolution through the analysis and summary of the phenolic components. The
productive parameter behaviour of the different modalities was observed in grapevines.
This project included the work "Influence of climate and deficit irrigation on grapevine physiology, yield
and quality attributes of the cv Touriga Nacional at Douro Region" presented at the IX Congrés
International Terroirs Vitivinicoles (Dijon/Reims, France).

Quinta do Noval (Pinhão)
In this test plot, which was installed in a vineyard organised into micro levels in rows, two modes (0% and 30% of
the ETc) with three replications were investigated. The irrigation amount was lower than those of the other test
sites because there was a smaller need for watering as identified by monitoring and the observation of predawn
leaf water potential. We evaluated productive and qualitative parameters, and prepared a report on the results of
the study at Quinta do Noval.
Quinta da Canameira / Grifo (Barca d´Alva)
To investigate the response of the Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca varieties in an environment with more
water-stress, new observation plots were defined in 2011 in the high Douro for monitoring the predawn leaf water
potential, maturation and production. In 2012, we continued observing the evolution of predawn water potential
and the response of productive and qualitative parameters in terms of water stress in a study predefined by ETPc
and monitored by the predawn water potential. Result reports were made and discussed with the Rozès Vinhos SA.
6.1.2. Eligible areas of grapevine crop potential
The preparation and development of contacts and meetings with partners and companies with expertise in the
area of remote sensing were carried out to support zoning processes and precision viticulture.
The mapping of spatial analysis for physiographic parameters of the region were developed to classify the plots.
Preparatory work for the implementation of a web mapping platform (transfer of information) was done to support
the quality potential management of the vineyards.
6.1.3. Functional Biodiversity in Viticulture
Increasing functional biodiversity in vineyards (value creation) was accomplished, which valued the establishment
of ecological corridors and reduced pesticide inputs. The anchor project "Functional Biodiversity in Viticulture" is
supported by three projects sponsored by different financing sources, namely "The green infrastructure in
conservation biological protection against pests in the vineyard - IEE", "ECOVITIS - Maximising ecosystem services in
the grapevine business," and "BioDiVine - Demonstration of functional biodiversity in the landscape". We will
summarise the main 2012 achievements. These actions converge to one main goal as follows: to promote the
maintenance of productive agricultural system sustainability and create value through ecosystem services. Today,
the actions expected for the IEE project are part of the ECOVITIS project.

6.1.3.1 BIODIVINE (Demonstration of functional biodiversity in landscape wine - LIFE
+)
Monitoring Actions
Monitoring arthropods
The sampling location was changed; during the first year, it was located in five distinct habitats, and in the second
year, it was a grapevine habitat assessment according to the composition of the landscape. For this study, the 25
sampling points were located at a distance of 1 km to permit the analysis of a buffer per sampling point of 500 m,
for a total of 2000 hectares for an analysis of the landscape composition associated with the sampling point.
Similar to the experiments from 2011, arthropods were monitored by using combination traps (to catch flying
arthropods) and pitfall traps (for capturing terrestrial arthropods) from 25 plots located in the Cima Corgo sub
region (RDD). The captured material was classified by RBA method, recorded, photographed (to create a photo
library) and saved. This work was performed by the Master's student Nathan Pigeon and resulted in the
preparation of his thesis, which was disclosed to members.
Monitoring flora
Organisation of the flora monitoring protocol and training of the Master's student, who was responsible for surveys
intended for all European partners.
In each of the 25 sites, flora surveys were conducted during the month of March by a Master's student who was
hired for the project and developed a thesis called "Characterisation of the flora from six vineyards of Europe" on
the basis of a vegetation cover comparison observed at six project demonstration sites, which includes the Douro.
This work was performed by the MSc student Miren Pédehontaa, resulting in the preparation of her thesis, which
was also disclosed to members.
Monitoring bird life
During the month of October, bird monitoring was conducted in each of the 25 plots under observation by the
Laboratory of Applied Ecology team of UTAD, which was hired by ADVID for this purpose. This monitoring included
visual observations and listening to the birds present in the vineyard ecosystem for approximately 10 minutes per
site. Forty species of birds were observed in the vineyards, among which we highlight the following in order of
decreasing abundance: the European robin, the blackbird, the warbler, the European serin, the great tit, the
starling, the redstart and finches.
Monitoring invertebrate biodiversity in soil

Ground cover plays an important role in soil protection (e.g., through the reduction of erosion, promotion of
organic matter and filtration of water resources), and it provides other ecosystem services such as the biological
control of pests and diseases, soil aeration and soil nutrient recycling. To monitor the biological activity of soil
(presence of invertebrates), two portions were delimited at the top, one with and one without cover crops located
in proximity to one another at Quinta do Seixo. For the monitoring, we used the easy "bait-blades" tool, which was
made from a plastic stick with 16 holes containing cellulose powder plus bran and activated charcoal flakes, which,
when eaten by soil invertebrates, provided an indication of biological activity in the soil. Within a given time
interval, the more holes that were empty, the more “bio-active” the soil was. The soil analysis (routine and
microbial biomass) has not yet been completed for result interpretation.
Monitoring mammals
The BioDivine project aims to monitor mammals in the grapevine ecosystem by using infrared (IR) cameras located
along the border area in three habitats of the study (1 - riparian gallery, 2 – woods, 3 - olive/vineyards with cover
crops). The impact of the presence of such infrastructure in the vineyard proximity was evaluated. At the end of the
first 12 weeks of monitoring, between December 2012 and February 2013, a brief assessment of collected material
was done with short films recorded when mammals crossed the area by using IR cameras.
In descending order of frequency records, we highlight the presence of the following mammals: 1st
rabbit (164
records), 2nd fox (68 records), 3rd boar (29 records), 4th mouse (20 records), 5th ferret (6 records) and 6th hedgehog
(4 records).
We found that all three habitats located in the monitored vineyards captured a large number of videos. The highest
frequency of records was observed in one of the olive tree orchards with ground cover, most likely because this
orchard is connected to a large wooded area.
Implementation of conservation actions
Demonstration actions were prepared (in relation to ground cover, redefinition of headlands, hedge installation
and mating disruption for grape moths).
In December 2012, ADVID launched a bid for its members to take advantage of funding (50%) to implement 5
conservation actions for the promotion of ecosystem services: C1-ground cover, C2-installation of hedges, C3-
promoting biodiversity, C4-use of non-chemical control methods (pheromones for mating disruption), C5-
reorganisation of headlands. Three of these five actions were adopted to a greater extent by members, namely the
C1-ground cover (expected 12.5 hectares of green cover), C2-installation of hedges (planned to install 2600 metres
of hedgerows) and C4-use of non-chemical control methods (planned to install 22 hectares of pheromones). Two of
these actions are to be implemented in the spring of 2013 (C2 and C4).

6.1.3.2 EcoVitis - Maximising ecosystem services in viticulture
Monitoring the impact of ecological infrastructures with chromotropic traps
To assess the impact of woods on the presence of arthropods in the vineyard and thereby explain its importance in
the infrastructure of the project, we placed yellow sticky traps in two plots of Quinta das Carvalhas and in one plot
of Quinta de Arnozelo in early May. In the Quinta das Carvalhas plots, there were three modes, each of which had
four replicates (i.e., traps), according to how distant they were from the woods: 0, 25 m and 50 m. In the Quinta do
Arnozelo, the same distances were used although only one trap was set at 0 m as a consequence of logistical issues.
Three traps were set at each of the other two distances. The traps were observed weekly for a total of 24 weeks to
record the captured arthropods. These arthropods totalled 13,286 individuals, which were distributed along the
different distances/replicates that were screened to identify their order or, when possible, their family. We also
separated them by trophic groups, i.e., parasitoids, predators, phytophagous and unknown, as we proceeded with
the material sampled in 2011.
Impact assessment of ecological infrastructure in the presence of grape moth parasitoids
At two different time intervals (May-June and September-October), which represents the 1st
and 3rd
generations of
the grape moth, and in various locations of the farms that comprise the project, caterpillars were collected to be
grown under lab conditions in order to obtain parasitoids and evaluate their importance. Collection was not made
during the 2nd
generation because of their low incidence during that year of analysis. In total, 743 moth specimens
were collected, of which 41.7% were parasitised. A total of 91.4% of the parasitoids were Elachertus affinis. The
remaining specimens were sent to the Natural History Museum of Paris to be identified by entomologist Dr. Claire

Villemant. The UTAD researcher responsible for flora, António Crespí, together with the ADVID team, made floristic
inventories of the plant communities analysed in our activities.
Prospecting parasitoids of grapevine mealybugs
In the parasitoid evaluation, observations were made on the complex associated with grapevine mealybugs (life
cycle, natural enemies and evaluation of the impact of the landscape on pest occurrence and action of natural
limiting factors). These observations were made for the September/October vintage by the UTAD team together
with the ADVID team. The number of grape clusters attacked by either coccidian or pseudo-coccidian mealy bugs
was recorded. A total of 68 plots were observed, of which 57.4% were attacked by mealybugs (44.1% pseudo-
coccidian and 25% coccidian). The projects were restarted in early December in order to analyse the population
dynamics of mealybugs during the winter. To obtain in depth information, observations were made at two project
sites and were extended to other two plots that were not previously included in the project because there was a
greater incidence observed there.
Application of grape moth mating disruption in the Douro region
Pheromones for mating disruption were applied with the same resources used in 2011 (ISONET - LTT, each
containing 300 mg (E, Z)-7,9-dodecadienyl acetate - sex pheromone from the grape moth Lobesia botrana), in the
entirety of those 5 sites planned for the project. The applied 173 ha area was larger than that from 2011. It was not
possible to make observations because the action a) of phase 1 of the project was not concluded. Diffusers based
on the use of GIS had not yet been developed. The results were described in a preliminary report made by
technicians at the sites following method efficiency evaluation.
Evaluating the presence of other grape moths (Ephestia sp.)
Over the course of the project's development, we observed the occurrence, in significant numbers, of "other
moths" (i.e., larvae from other Lepidopteran species causing damage similar to that generated by the species
commonly called grape moth), in addition to L. botrana, at Quintas das Carvalhas, S. Luiz and Arnozelo. In response
to the importance of these insects (mostly individuals of the genus Ephestia) and the possibility of their
interference in the use of mating disruption to combat L. botrana, we decided to devote attention to these pests
within this project. Therefore, we contacted Italian researchers who had experienced this identical situation in Italy.
From this contact, samples of collected material were sent to Dr. Andrea Lucchi Coltivazione and Difesa delle Specie
Legnose at the Department of Rural Entomology in Pisa, Italy for identification. In parallel, we sought to explain the
occurrence of such insects, which allowed us to establish positive correlations between their populations and the
dehydration of clusters, the occurrence of blossom drop and Glomerella cingulata (Stonemam) attack. These
studies should continue to clarify the real importance of this problem and its impact on mating disruption methods

to combat L. Botrana.
Isolation and analysis of entomopathogenic fungi and their genetic diversity as associated with the cultivation of
vineyards in the Douro Region
The use of entomopathogenic fungi is an important tool in pest biological control, whether in conventional
agriculture, organic farming or integrated production. The development of methodologies to identify or
unequivocally characterise the species of fungi found in the Douro region is therefore one of the priorities of this
area of research. The methodology, which employed Tenebrio molitor larvae as a trap, was adequate for the
isolation of entomopathogenic fungi from the soil. Studies conducted in 2012 showed the occurrence of
entomopathogenic fungi from the genera Beauveria, Metarhizium and Lecanicillium. There was also the emergence
of a new species, located in different parts of the vineyard, which is undergoing sequencing and molecular
identification. The genetic work in progress will optimise the biotic potential of natural entomopathogenic fungi
populations to combat pests.
Dissemination actions
"Biodiversity Week" was promoted in May, with several activities and the presence of Professor Steve Wratten
(Lincoln University):

6.1.4 Assessing the oenological potential of grapes
We held meetings and made contact with members and partner organisations of the Cluster to carry out the
following:
Redefine the specifications for project development;
List activities to develop, elect representative parameters and choose the application process and
technology to implement.
Developing contacts with organisations and companies that hold prototypes and equipment in the
validation phase;
Submission of grant application to SAESCTN in co-promotion with the University of Porto (School of
Pharmacy - laboratory-associated REQUIMTE) and College of Engineering, for the project "iGrape:
definition and establishment of quality indices for wine grapes”. This project, which is a collaboration
between ICETA, ADVID and INESC, aims to assess the current situation in terms of producer grape
valuation and developing a strategy to integrate the available information by some indices that can be
used in the future as credible indicators of grape quality, and to implement one analytical technique for in-
situ maturation measurement of grapes in the vineyard during the ripening period (infrared spectroscopy);
Validation of methodologies (already initiated);
Developing contacts with organisations and companies holding prototypes and equipment in the
validation phase.
6.1.5 Preservation of grape vine genetic variability
In continuing the 2011 projects, we kept exploring and harvesting plant material from 23 vineyards with 74
different grape varieties and 395 plants, for a total of 25 plots/winemakers.
In line with this 2012 activity (diversity preservation and study of plant material characteristics), we also conducted
the following:
Monitoring of clonal selection fields in Quinta da Granja in Alijó - property of member "Companhia Geral
da Agricultura do Norte" during grafting and data collection for the vintage.
Collection of field rods for clone selection in the RDD to transfer to the experimental hub of Pegões.
Implementation and monitoring of two Tinta Roriz variety selection fields using grafting technology in
order to establish a more expeditious method of obtaining results. Clone material was collected and the
experimental design was elaborated.

6.1.6 Sustained Viticultural Production
The action and promotion plans were developed by ADVID and Vinideas, Ltd.
Materials were supplied by ADVID for the VINIDEAS platform;
Information collection on reference plots according to the model prepared by ADVID, following the plot
structure by utilisation levels according to the execution model discussed with associate members, who agreed
with the information collection;
Information collection and processing to support research activity and experimentation, decision-making by
winemakers, plant protection strategies for vineyards, soil conservation and vegetation maintenance.
Predictions of the harvest potential in the Douro Region were made, which were based on the pollen project
results in collaboration with the IVDP and College of Sciences, University of Porto.
The study "Effects of rootstock and environment on Portuguese grape varieties in the Douro region" was
developed and a paper was presented at the IX Congrés International Terroirs Vitivinicoles (Dijon/Reims).
The communication "Prediction method of harvest in Douro" was presented during the seminar "Technological
innovations in grapevines and wine", which was included in the II Wine Meetings-Vinho Verde, as organised by the
Order of Engineers - College of Agricultural Engineering.

6.1.7 Rationalisation of the hillside vineyard
Following approval of the application submitted to the SIAC called "Rationalisation of hillside vineyards - Mapping
of landslides", the main objective of which is based on the elaboration of mapping to support risk identification and
support investment decisions by enterprises, information-gathering devices were initiated.
In addition to the compilation and processing of climate information, an event log and GIS information were
prepared to support the project.
Meetings were held with the Department of Physical Geography, University of Porto, to refine the methodologies
for mapping the susceptibility to slope movements.

6.1.7.1 Economic Observatory
This study was used to establish the Economic Observatory for the School of Economics at the University of Porto,
and the necessary methodology was defined, with particular attention to the "Development of a Composite Model
for Determining the Value of the Grapevine" and "Web Deployment Model of Valuation of the Grapevine.”
6.1.8. Skills Development - Training and Dissemination
“Ampelography - Course II” (56 h)
In response to the success of the ampelography courses provided in 2010 and 2011, ADVID conducted
"Ampelography - Course II" in 2012.
This course focused on the ampelographic identification and characterisation of the grape varieties recommended
for the RDD. This course used the Ampelographic Collection of Quinta de Santa Barbara, visits to the National
Ampelographic Collection in Dois Portos (INRB) and the Experimental Centre for Conservation of Native Variability
of Vines by PORVID (Portuguese Association for Grapevine Diversity), in Pegões.
Mr. Mário Cardoso (DRAP-N) was invited to instruct the course, which also had the support of the IVDP classifiers.

Training courses for winegrowers
Application to POPH, Measure 2.3. - Certified Modular Training with training in Agricultural and Animal Production,
was submitted in late 2011, and it was approved in the second half of 2012, with a total of 14250 training hours. It
began in July 2012, and various courses had already been completed in 2012. The three courses are described
below.

Training Courses for Technicians
For PRODER, we promoted courses called "Integrated Production Vineyard" (168 h) and "General Organic
Agriculture" (140 h) to target technicians from the viticulture sector.
The campaign "Building a Capacity Network for Promoting Employability - Douro” was submitted to “Promotion
and Institutional Capacity Building - Institutional Networks 2010 - Axis V", which had the objective of promoting
employability in the Douro region in 2012. The organisations promoting the project, namely DREN and IEFP, were
restructured and they left both the campaign and the project.
We are still waiting for a decision on the application for ON2 funding, which was submitted in Feb. 2011 and
entitled "Continuous Assessment of the Technological Status of Viticulture in the Douro Region".

6.2. Complementary R&D Projects
6.2.1. Evaluating the effectiveness of treatments to combat grapevine Oidium at
early stages of the vegetative cycle.
We continued to test a plot located in the Cima Corgo with the Tinta Roriz grape variety. The goal was to evaluate
the treatment efficacy during early phases of the vegetative cycle. Treatments were positioned between bud burst
and pre-flowering (14 days) to control the eventual primary infections during a powdered sulphur shortage that
resulted from low temperatures (low efficiency of sulphur powder). Four treatments were applied: 1 - Control; 2 -
Application of 3 treatments with wettable sulphur before pre-flowering; 3 - Foliar treatments during the vegetative
phase and another during pre-flowering; 4 - Only one treatment in the pre-flowering stage with an IBE. The attack
intensity within the vintage was evaluated by recording the incidence and severity of damaged bunches

7.2.2. Training
ADVID also provided their members with English Classes (48 h) to improve international networking
with various partners and institutions. In addition, it provided the course “Time Management, Stress
and Work Organisation” (21 h).
7.3. Knowledge Transfer
7.3.1. ADVID page on the Internet - www.advid.pt
In 2012, we developed a new ADVID web site to improve the communication and dissemination of wine
and grapevine information, including international and national partners and especially the ADVID
members. To meet this goal, we also developed an information management platform with access
restricted to members. The web page was finished and meteorological data are available for 2013.
7.3.2. Publicity Events
In pursuing the goals of the Plan of Action for the Wine Cluster of the Douro region, the ADVID held several
events for the transmission of knowledge and its endogenisation within the wine sector. These events
include workshops, symposia, lectures and visits. They are presented below in summary and are

Given the importance of the topic to the national wine economy and particularly to the Douro Region, the
event was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning, Dr. Assunção
Cristas, who opened the session in Lisbon.

This seminar presented the conclusions of the ADVID study about the impacts of climate change on
viticulture, mainly providing details about observed and projected changes for wine regions worldwide and
their impacts on grapevine growth, grape composition, wine production and quality. The opportunities
and challenges related to climate change, especially for the Douro region, were also discussed.

“Wine Spoilage Yeast - Brettanomyces- Dekkera” Workshop
Date: 9 May
Location: IVDP auditorium, Régua
Invited Speakers: Prof. Manuel Malfeito Ferreira (Botany Department, Biological Engineering of the
Agronomy Institute), Dr. José António Couto (School of Biotechnology, Portuguese Catholic University),
Dr. Margarida Souto-Carneiro (Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra) and Dr.
Cátia Barbeta (Quinta do Crasto, S.A.).
This workshop presented an analysis of Brettanomyces and Dekkera in wine, which are spoilage yeasts
responsible for producing undesirable aromatic compounds, such as volatile phenols.

The first dates were reserved for "Douro" wine tasting and the following days were for "Generous" tastings
with software to collect the data.
A total of 66 wines were tested, with 31 generous wines (from 10 different companies) and 35 wines
suitable for Douro (from 9 different companies).
Biodiversity Week
Date: 28 - 31 May
Location: Demarcada do Douro Region
The purpose of this event was to raise awareness to either improve or maintain the productive
sustainability of the agricultural systems and create value through ecosystem services.
Biodiversity week was comprised of a set of diverse activities, from bird watching to thematic workshops.

Session Orientation: Paulo Travassos and Mário Santos - Laboratory of Applied Ecology (LEA/CITAB) at
the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), accompanied by viticulture technicians of the
Real Companhia Velha and ADVID. The event was also attended by one of the leading experts on
functional biodiversity, New Zealander Steve Wratten of the University of Lincoln.

related to viticulture and discuss them with the members.

In addition, the potential production forecast for the 2012 vintage was presented.

"Importance of Grape Ripening Control" Workshop

• Define parameters of ripening evaluation;
• Standardise the users of the ripening analysis service proposed by ADVID for routine and phenolic

"The Biodivine Project" Promotion

The MSc. Student Nathan Pigeon, who works on the BIODIVINE project - Demonstrating biodiversity in the
viticulture landscape (LIFE09 NAT/FR/000584), made a presentation of the main results observed from
monitoring grapevine ecosystem biodiversity by using traps placed on the properties of some associates.

"Installation of Hedges in the Viticulture Ecosystem" Workshop

With respect to the different projects BIODIVINE - Demonstrating biodiversity in viticulture landscapes
(LIFE +) and Maximising Vineyard Ecosystem Services (PRODER), this event was held to promote the
installation of hedges in order to promote some ecosystem services as natural limitations of pests, soil
protection and erosion control, reducing the drift effect of phytosanitary treatments, pollination,
regulation of the water cycle and climate, carbon sequestration and cultural services such as recreational
opportunities and leisure.

IN 2012, the ADVID Prize honoured Bernardino Camilo Cincinnato da Costa, eminent Agronomist and
Professor, who was named the Delegate of the Chamber of Agriculture to the Paris Universal Exhibition in
1900. This honour was considered to be the most important representation of Portugal.
The jury decided to award the “2012 ADVID award” to Mr. Cincinnato Costa for his study
"General phenological model to characterise the timing of flowering and veraison of Vitis vinifera L.”
as developed by A. K. Parker and C. Van Leeuwen, of ENITA, University of Bordeaux, and I. G. de Cortázar-
Atauri and I. Chuine, of the Centre for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology in Montpellier.

Brief notes on the winning work
This work was aimed at developing a simple process based on temperature to predict the phenological
state of flowering and veraison. The results showed the high potential for estimating flowering and
veraison periods, which could be applied in several varieties, and the potential to simulate the
phenological behaviour of varieties in climate-changing scenarios.

Complementary projects are led by Member or Partner companies. Within the QREN, 28 projects are
currently approved with an eligible investment of 17.5 million euro and an incentive of 9.4 million euro.
The wine sector has two instruments of Common Agricultural Policy for the processes of production,
processing and further promotion abroad, namely, the RDP and CMO Wine, which are managed by the
Ministry of Agriculture, the Sea, the Environment and Spatial Territory.

8. Support Service for Good Agricultural Practices
8.1. Services financed by quotas (shares)
8.1.1. Technical Support for Integrated Vineyard Production
Within the Integrated Protection and Production Program, the shareholders were monitored by collecting
and transmitting information relevant to the application of these principles. This action was
complemented with the editing of technical bulletins, leaflets on monitoring the grapevine's vegetative
cycle and evolution of diseases and pests and lists of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides, with their
technical standards for use of different active substances.
For the year of 2012, we summarised information on the main activities made by the technical support
groups:

8.1.2. Support the preparation of application processes for agro-environmental
measures
Applications to Agro-environmental measures were made by the technical services of ADVID, with 137
single applications (PU) for 180 production units. A total of 5,562 ha vineyards have applied the integrated
production mode, totalling 319 ha of organic production. In addition, applications were also made to SPS
(Single Payment Scheme), MLFA (Maintenance of Agricultural Activity in Least Favourable Areas), ITI-DW
(Integrated Territorial Intervention in the Douro Wine Region), Support to Quality Schemes and other less
relevant issues in our area of intervention.
The preparation and dissemination of legislative information for support (10 newsletters), support for
administrative issues raised by IFAP and monitoring the certification measures was also conducted by
encouraging the development of field reports, technical support and preparation of technical
documentation.
The following graphs present a statistical summary of the processes and their potential to channel aid to
members in 2012, with approximately 1,493 million euro (values estimated based on applications,
disregarding subsequent area corrections).

8.1.3. Control of the grape moth by mating disruption
Combating grape moths by mating disruption has been studied by ADVID since 2000. The knowledge
acquired over this decade allows us to identify the strengths and to maximise efficiency while identifying
some weaknesses that restrict its use.
Members interested in more sustainable ways to combat grape moth asked ADVID for support from
specialists, especially for diffuser application in the field, as well as training for technical staff and
company farm workers and any other employees involved. Additionally, they requested support for
evaluating the effectiveness of this “fighting” mode during the campaign by monitoring the moth damage
in locations subject to mating disruption and to make comparisons with those reference parcels (without
mating disruption treatment). In 2012, ADVID monitored and provided technical service to 9 properties
(213.8 ha) that adopted this method of moth control, as done in previous years.

The results were widely disseminated by workshops, specific publications, and during the balance of the
harvest year.

8.1.4. Forecasting the vintage potential by using the pollen method
Estimations of production potential by using the pollen method has been employed in the Douro region
since 1992 as a tool to support technical and economic activity, which is integrated into the action plan of
the Cluster of wines from the Douro Region.
The process, which is managed by ADVID with financial support from IVDP and scientific support from the
College of Sciences at the University of Porto, takes advantage of the methodology by capturing and
analysing the amount of pollen emitted by grapevines, and integrates climate and phenological data. We
prepare an early annual estimate of production potential, based on three predefined locations in the
region that should represent the viticultural areas.
The pollen collection was made in Régua and Valencia Douro between 14 May and 25 June and in Vila
Nova de Foz Coa between 21 May and 26 June, with biweekly filter replacements.
The forecast range for 2012 was between 269 000 and 325 000 barrels of wine, with an increased
prediction of approximately 23% in comparison to the average forecast range expected in 2011. The
evolution of this forecast range was negatively influenced by drought and blossom drop as well as by a
local frost in late June plus a hailstorm in mid-July. Despite this finding, the provisional value of the
declared production points to a slight increase in relation to 2011.

8.1.5. Evaluation of grape variety and rootstock behaviour
In carrying out this activity, the monitoring and collection of data related to the maturation and variety x
rootstock affinity was conducted at Quinta da Cavadinha. The collection and processing of information
available for the RDD about grape varieties, with special reference to the collection of phenological data to
support the study of phenological relationships and their thermal needs, was also carried out to support
the elaboration of phenological maps for vineyard management.
8.2. Invoiced services
8.2.1. Viticulture
8.2.1.1 Support for Organic Production
To start up a support system for sustainable organic production in viticulture, ADVID compiled and
processed information in 2012 to support the activity and organisation of contacts with companies that
provide solutions for organic agriculture, organised workshops to raise awareness about this way of
production and trained two technicians in this production method.
8.2.1.2 Evaluation of water potential for irrigation needs
To make a service available to members for managing grapevine water relations, by assessing the predawn
water potential, we monitored the grapevine water status of the Upper Douro region. Two members
(totalling 3 properties) subscribed to this service. Assessments on predawn plant water potential and
grapevine hydraulic potential were made for 6 weeks.
8.2.2. Oenology
8.2.2.1 Maturation control
The general goal was to create a database on the behaviour of the main varieties of different sub-regions
in Douro.
In 2012, the members who adopted this initiative were sent customised reports about their parcels
containing the following routine analyses: weight (g); fluid volume (mL); potential alcohol (%); total acidity
(mg/L Tartaric acid) and pH, and phenolic maturation: total anthocyanins, extractable anthocyanins, total
polyphenols (IPT); extractability of anthocyanins - EA (%) and maturation of tannins - MP (%).
In 2012, 18 members adopted the service plus 1 non-member. Two hundred thirty vineyard parcels were

subscribed to the monitoring and analysis of maturation between 20 July and 2 October 2012, totalling
807 analyses. In addition, 212 maturation analyses were made by ADVID, totalling 1019 analyses
processed in the lab.
8.2.2.2 Portal of tannins (ADVID/AWRI)
In continuing the 2011 work and considering the importance of tannins in oenology (which influence the
colour stability, wine aging, oxidation and astringency), 514 samples were submitted to the tannin portal
from 3 of 4 companies that subscribed in the year 2012.
Furthermore, generous wines were ordered in 2012 for the validation of this method with these wines.
Samples and respective results were sent to the AWRI.
9. ADMINISTRATIVE AND ACCOUNTING SUPPORT
To gather systematic information as well as an accounting of the budget, in particular for the projects
subject to public funding, we began the implementation of an analytical accounting system.
We started centralising all existing information, photographic databases and official documents into a
digital file in order to systematise and facilitate access to all members, as well as preserving this
documentation as an ADVID heritage. We also started cataloguing all the purchased material into digital
format.
10. INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONS
By following the institutional policy, we strengthened links with relevant institutions, including the
University of Porto, the IVDP, the IVV, ViniPortugal, the Douro Mission Structure, the DRAPN and the Luso-
American Foundation and we fostered the development and dynamism of the network, adhering to
Cluster entities, such as the School of Agriculture of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, the Institute of
Accounting and Administration of Coimbra and the GISTREE - Geographic Information Systems of the
Forest and Environment.
Given the same goal, we adhered to the OILB, or l'Organisation Internationale de Lutte Biologique, the
ENDURE Network and the National Rural Network, and we monitored the European Cluster Collaboration
Platform. We pay tribute to Mr. Cincinnato Costa through the 2012 ADVID Award, which was presented for
the study "General phenological model to characterise the timing of flowering and veraison of Vitis vinifera
L." as developed by Amber K. Parker et C. Van Leeuwen - Enita, Université de Bordeaux I. et G. Cortazar-
Atauri et I. Chuine Fonctionelle du Centre d'Ecologie et Evolutive in Montpellier. To meet one of the goals
of the award, we invited the researchers Amber Parker and Professor van Leeuwen to develop similar

work in the RDD. The invitation was accepted and the work will be developed during 2013.
With the same purpose, we organised a visit by German researchers from Geisenheim, Neustadt,
Weinsberg and Veitshöchheim to the Douro Region on 22-24 March in order to promote this meeting, as
well as discussions among UTAD researchers and ADVID technicians.
We continue to network with the Ministry of Agriculture through the Secretary of State for Rural
Development, particularly to raise awareness about the issue of Flavescence dorée, culminating in a draft
of the National Action Plan held by the Working Group formed for the purpose, with which ADVID has
integrated.
With regards to the UNESCO Mission on Douro World Heritage, we were invited by the Minister of
Agriculture, and we issued an opinion on the "Impact of Hydroelectric Foz Tua on Wine Production" as
requested by the head of this mission.
We also held several meetings with the Office of the Secretary of State for Entrepreneurship,
Competitiveness and Innovation, which aimed to reflect on the evaluation and development of Centres
and Clusters from the perspective of economic and social development for the country, with a view to
define a new framework for recognition during the coming three years.
To define and assist the policies and national, international or regional technical-scientific events of
viticulture, ADVID members have attended meetings in different institutions:
Douro Mission Structure participation on the Advisory Board, which ruled on the Preliminary
Report of the State of Conservation of the Patrimony of the Alto Douro Wine Region and its
importance in the context of safeguarding, protecting and promoting the ADV, as well as to
honour the commitments made by Portugal for the registration of the ADV in the World Heritage
List.
Institute of Grapevines and Wine, invited to rule on the list of varieties suitable for wine
production in Portugal, having been translated into Ordinance 380/2012, which is one of the
fundamental conditions proposed by ADVID, with the inclusion of a reference code for each
variety.
“Casa do Douro”, with participation in the Regional Council;
FEVIPOR - Winemakers' Federation of Portugal, member of the Board through which we sit on the
Advisory Board of IVV.
