Catalysis' and trans ion-11- coordination chemistry, speci ally metal-halideligand format' are long standing research interests of ours. An er active topicof applie search, to which we have recently become associated, is Lhe productionand co t I of vapor phase metal clusters in sizes ranging from one 5 thousands ofator n' e 5 . hc eftabilished it glectron yield detection has a very highsensitivity to species in the gas phase Tfhese events suggested the possibility of acombined experiment; in-situ x-ray absorption study of evaporated metal in gasphase. The comparison of gas phase results to earlier work on supported metalcatalysis would be very helpful in determining the extent of support interaction. Inaddition, new information gathered from experiments where gas phase metalatoms or clusters are reacted with molecules, such as I-!No, Cl NH etc., wouldimprove our understanding of transition metal coordination chemisiry.
Trial experiments were completed at SSRL using a preliminary design for the metalvapor cell/detector. A resistance heated evaporation source was positioned so thatmetal vapor (in this case Cu) would flow directly through the electron detectiongrids, while the x-ray beam crossed through the vapor between the grids. -Qt'T1,results suggested some improvements to the evaporator design which would resultin better electrical isolation and less contamination of insulators. The newer designwill also have better vacuum pumping characteristics and a longer path for x-raysthrough the vapor
The research of Mar ues, Olson and Sandstrom was supported by the Office ofNaval Research. Lytle and Greegor were supported by the National ScienceFoundation.
