This functional and elegant looking ensem-ble of two-storey cubes has been clad withdark fibre cement panels. Its shape stands insharp contrast to the products that the clientmanufactures and sells: fluffy toys and deco-rative toy sheep. With an air of self-assuranceit brushes aside the view of many architectsthat, although cement panels may be shapedlike wooden planks, they must not imitatewood grain. But that is precisely what thewhite and black weatherboarding shows, andit is a feature not without p recedence: manybaroque buildings used the much cheaperstuccolustro (plaster based imitation marble)instead of genuine marble. Nevertheless,that is not an argument that should quash thecurrent discourse on optical illusion versusauthenticity of materials.

Ein sachlich und elegant wirkendes, zweige-schossiges Ensemble aus Kuben mit hellerund dunkler Bekleidung aus Faserzementsteht mit seiner Gestalt in scharfem Kontrastzu dem, was der Bauherr produziert und ver-treibt; plschige Spielzeug- und Dekorations-schafe. Auerdem setzt er sich selbstbewusstber ein Urteil mancher Architekten hinweg:Faserzementpaneele in Bretterformat drfenkeine Holzstruktur haben. Das aber habenhier die schwarzen und weien Elementeals Stlpschalung. In dem Zusammenhangdarf man an Barockbauten erinnern, in de-nen aus Sparsamkeitsgrnden an Stellevon Marmor der ihm optisch gleichwertigegipserne Stuccolustro (Stuckmarmor) auf-gebracht wurde. Trotzdem sollte die heutigeDiskussion ber die optische Materialehrlich-keit erlaubt sein.

Cet ensemble cubique sur deux tages sobreet lgant avec un bardage en fibres-cimentclair et sombre contraste par sa structureavec ce que le matre d'ouvrage fabriqueet vend : des moutons en peluche dcora-tifs et des jouets. De plus, celui-ci est allvolontairement l'encontre de l'avis de laplupart des architectes de cette rgion quipensent que les panneaux de fibres-ciment nedoivent pas comporter de structure en bois.Le revtement mural clins et ses lmentsblancs et noirs en possdent cependant bienune. Cela n'est pas sans rappeler les bti-ments baroques pour lesquels pour des rai-sons d'conomie du stuccolustro (du stuc)tait employ la place du marbre, car op-tiquement identique. Aujourd'hui cependant,nous devons pouvoir nous poser la questionde l'authenticit optique des matriaux.

The waterfront building rises up to sevenstoreys in height. The upper edge of its faadefollows a curved line that slopes down totwo storeys at the rear where the groundplan also describes a soft curve. At its frontthe quayside building overlooks the marinaand is clad with white and greyish blue fibrecement panels. The rectangular panels makeup storey-high fields of playfully alternatingwidths and colours, with slit-like windows ad-ding a further rhythmic accent to the faade.The new university campus is under construc-tion in a quarter of Ipswich earmarked for re-generation and development where this firstcomplex stands not only as a landmark for thecampus as a whole but also programmaticallyas a pointer to quality and sustainability as ahallmark of the entire development.

What is striking about this private house isthe ultimate reduction in both material andform. A roof of anthracite coloured fibrecement slates and what seems to be drystone walling create a somewhat primordial,elemental appearance; and yet this house isundeniably modern. That is largely due to thestrip windows between masonry and roof,interspaced with narrow fields of fibre cementsidings that also clad the gable. Reveals andall edging profiles are made of galvanised me-tal plate. Tight details and the flat appearanceof the roof surface accentuate the buildingsmodern style, in spite of its traditional stonemasonry.

Ce que l'on remarque tout de suite danscette maison est la simplicit de ses mat-riaux et de sa forme. Le toit est constitud'ardoises de fibres-ciment anthracite quidonnent un ct traditionnel la maison,impression renforce par les murs faits demoellons grossirement taills. tonnam-ment la maison n'en garde pas moins unaspect moderne. Ceci est en grande partied la bande vitre entre le toit et les murs,interrompue par des ranges d'ardoises defibres-ciment qui couvrent aussi les pig-nons. Les ardoises se chevauchent sur deuxstrates mais aucune fixation n'est visible; lestableaux de fentres et tous les profils dejonction sont en zinc prpatin. Le toit, trstendu, et de petits dtails soutiennent, mal-gr une construction traditionnelle, le ctmoderne de la maison.

Dasliegt nicht zuletzt an dem Fensterband zwi-schen Dach und Mauerwerk, unterbrochenvon Streifen aus Faserzementschindeln, wieauch die Giebel dieses Material aufweisen.Es ist keine Befestigung der doppelt berlap-penden Schindeln sichtbar, die Fensterlai-bung und alle Anschlussprofile bestehen ausvorpatinierten Zinkblechen. Das flchige Dachund die knappen Details untersttzen trotzdes traditionellen Mauerwerks das Heutigedes Hauses.

The main part of the car park is undergroundexcept for its uppermost level which makesits presence felt in the townscape by extend-ing, as it does, some 200 metres alongsideBastia station. It is here where the buildingfeatures a screen composed of fibre cementpanels, a material that is particularly resi-stant to air pollution and other types of conta-mination. Squarish panels of varying shadesof grey and blue form an irregular pattern ofcolours, based on a grid that follows the linesof both the floor level and the ramp. The loweredge of the screen echoes the contours of theterrain. Narrow slits inserted obliquely intothe screen ensure ventilation and disclose topassers-by the kind of building this is.

Das Parkhaus mit drei unterirdischen Ge-schossen ist mit seiner obersten Ebene imStadtgebiet prsent und erstreckt sich ber200 Meter entlang der Bahnstation Bastia.Diese Front ist mit einer Wand aus Faserze-menttafeln geschlossen, weil das Material be-sonders unempfindlich gegen Luftverschmut-zung und sonstige Verunreinigungen ist.Quadratische Tafeln in verschiedenen Grau-und Blautnen sind in freiem Farbrhythmusangeordnet. Das Fugenraster folgt demGeschoss und der Rampe, der untere Randder Bekleidung zeichnet den Gelndeverlaufnach. Schmale, schrg eingesetzte Schlitzesorgen fr Lftung und Fahrgste bekommeneine Ahnung, was sich hinter dieser Wandverbirgt.

The two lower storeys of this extension forman agreeable composition of brickwork slabsinterleafed with fully glazed, large-scale ope-nings that are divided optically by the concretefloors whose white edges can be seen. The topfloor appears similarly structured, only herethe materials are different. On lateral eleva-tions the opaque surfaces are clad with lightcoloured fibre cement panels w hich continueon the longitudinal sides where they form fiveframes to the large windows in between. Thefour intermediate windows feature sun visors

made up of wooden vanes. Viewed at an anglethe interplay of contrast and harmony is par-ticularly acute between the thin fibre cementpanels outlined by their narrow joints on theone hand, and the apparently heavy brickworkand fair-faced concrete slabs on the other.

There is nothing to disturb the elegant, gentlysloping new pyramid roof surfaces on an olderprivate house. The roofs have been nicelyfinished off by square gutters and appear tobe uniformly covered with fibre cement slates.However, those looks are deceptive, and someof the slates are made of integral photovoltaiccells. Their rearside cables are bundled toge-ther field by field which in turn are connectedto an inverter that feeds the electricity intothe national grid. Solar thermal panels on theuppermost roof supply domestic hot water.

A system of pipes laid 800 millimetres belowground and connected to a heat pump extractsgeothermal energy to heat or cool the houseas required. Energy costs for this carbon-freehouse are close to zero.

Die geschlossenen Schmalseiten sindmit hellen Tafeln aus Faserzement bekleidet,die sich an der Lngsseite als Rahmen derfnf groen Fenster fortsetzen. Dazwischensind vor vier Fenster Sonnenblenden aus

Holzlamellen gestellt. Gerade in der Schrg-ansicht zeigt sich der Kontrast in Harmoniezwischen den dnnen, mit Fugen durchzo-genen Faserzementtafeln und den schwererwirkenden Ziegel- und Sichtbetonscheiben.

The architects stated as their leitmotif to thisproject two aspects: its rectangular site and a textby Rainer Maria Rilke. The four-storey building isshared by two neighbouring schools. It is basedon a 50 x 15 metre gr ound plan and surroundedby birch trees. The compact volume is clad withfibre cement panels on three sides, their patterninterpreted by the architects as follows: Thelayering as a visual feature derives from the per-ceived analogy between the functional organisa-tion of space and the natural appearance of birchbark. Regularly spaced dark horizontal tears inthe flaking white birch bark have been translatedinto the differently colour-coated horizontal pa-nels of the faade.

All classrooms feature floor-to-ceiling glaz-ing and look north-west where no sun visors arerequired. Assembled behind the opaque south-east facing faade which is clad with fibre cementpanels there are the secondary rooms, alterna-ting with large-scale glazed surfaces to illumi-nate the spacious corridors. Staircases are loca-ted at the corners of the building and have beenkept simple to serve as emergency exit routes butalso spacious enough for everyday use.

The steel and concrete construction is evi-dent in the classrooms where walls of fair-facedconcrete alternate with wooden built-in compon-ents. On the open corridors, however, some walls

and floors have white render and bright colours.This interplay between a functional buildingstructure and a lively decorative shell, this sym-biosis of rigorous control and playful interaction,has created an ensemble that is appropriate forits location as well as for the pupils.

Einen langrechteckigen Bauplatz und einenpoetischen Text von R. M. Rilke haben die Ar-chitekten als Leitmotiv dieser Arbeit beschrie-ben. Der im Grundriss 50 x 15 Meter messende,

viergeschossige Neubau fr zwei benachbarteSchulen ist umgeben von groen Birken. Derkompakte Baukrper ist dreiseitig mit Faserze-mentpaneelen bekleidet. Dazu die Architekten: Das Leitbild der Schichtungen wird ber dieAnalogie der funktionalen Anordnung desRaumprogramms mit dem natrlichen Bi ld derBirkenrinde entwickelt. Gleichmig ber denhellen Birkenstamm verteilte, dunkle Horizon-talrisse werden im Fassadenbild mit verschie-denfarbig behandelten Horizontalpaneeleninterpretiert.

Alle Klassenrume sind mit raumhoher Ver-glasung nach Nordwesten orientiert, so dass hierkein Sonnenschutz notwenig ist. Hinter der ge-schlossenen, mit Faserzementpaneelen beklei-deten Fassade nach Sdosten sind Nebenrumezusammengefasst im Wechsel mit grozgigerVerglasung fr aufgeweitete Flurzonen. In denGebudeecken liegen abgeschlossen die Trep-pen, als Fluchttreppenhuser einfach gestaltetund zugleich fr die tgliche Nutzung grozgigdimensioniert.

Der Stahlbetonbau zeigt sich in den Klassen-rumen im Wechsel von Sichtbetonwnden und

Holzeinbauten. In den Flurzonen dagegen gibtes wei verputzte Wnde und krftige Far benfr manche Wnde und die Bden. Diese Ver-bindung von funktionaler Baustruktur und derlebendigen, abwechslungsreichen Hlle, dieseSymbiose von Strenge und Spiel ist hier zu einerfr den Ort und fr die Schler angemessenenHausform gebracht worden.

Toutes les salles de classes sont, avec desvitres hauteur des pices, orientes nord-ouest,si bien qu'aucun store n'est ncessaire. Derrirela faade ferme de panneaux de fibres-cimentoriente vers le sud-est se trouvent alternative-ment des pices annexes et de grandes fentresclairant des couloirs spacieux. Les extrmitsdes escaliers, amnags simplement commeescaliers de secours et dimensionns gnreuse-ment pour un usage quotidien, s'achvent dansles plafonds du btiment.

Le bton arm est visible dans les salles declasse et alterne avec des murs en bton brut etdes constructions en bois. Dans les couloirs, lesmurs sont au contraire en crpis blanc ; certains

murs et certains sols revtent mme des couleursvives. Ce rapprochement entre une structurefonctionnelle et un aspect vivant et vari, cettesymbiose entre austrit et originalit ont fait decette construction un btiment adapt aux lveset son environnement.

It looks neither rural nor urban. It does not pre-sent itself as a sculpture in need of interpretation,nor does it resemble the standard image of aprivate house. In this case, however, having a bitof everything does not suggest indecision or lackof confidence. On the contrary: the unexpectedcombination of shapes (shed and gable roofs)

and sudden scale changes (panorama windows)fuse well-known and proven features so as toform a new ensemble. Important in this respectis the fact that the overall shape of the house ap-pears unruffled and compact, and the choice ofmaterials is limited. The house is clad all round

with small slate-like panels of dark fibre cement.The positioning of openings follows both prac-tical requirements and artistic concepts. Glazedopenings are framed with stet metal profilesand either set deep into reveals of light colouredtimber or inserted flush with the faade. Thereare no additional features such as balconies or ca-nopies, and even the gutters and downpipes areout of sight. Tall, slender windows and the three-storey height of the east facing elevation lend thisstructure an air of pride and self-confidence.

The house is compact not only for reasonsof design but also for ecological considerations.

The concrete plinth is sunk into the ground toprovide a basis for a pure timber structure on top,

which uses high-quality thermal insulation andfibre cement slates on the faades as well as theroof.

Entscheidend dabei ist, dass die Gesamtformunaufgeregt und kompakt ist und dass es keineMaterialvielfalt gibt. Das Haus ist komplett mitkleinen Platten aus dunklem Faserzement beklei-det. ffnungen sind nach Bedarf und knstleri-schem Konzept eingeschnitten, die Verglasungsitzt in tiefen hellen Holzlaibungen oder fastbndig mit der Fassadenebene und ist mit einemdunklen Metallprofil gefasst. Es gibt keine ein-zelnen Zutaten wie Balkone, Vordcher und auchkeine sichtbaren Regenrinnen oder Fallrohre.Hohe schlanke Fenster und die Dreigeschos-sigkeit nach Osten geben dem Haus ein stolzesSelbstbewusstsein.

Kompakt sollte das Haus aber auch aus ko-logischen Grnden sein. Gegen das Erdreich istes ein Betonbau, darber eine hochgedmmteHolzkonstruktion mit Faserzementschindelnfr die Fassaden und das Dach auf hinterlfteterHolzlattung.

donnent la maison une apparence fire et ras-surante.

La maison se devait d'tre compacte pourdes raisons cologiques. Au sol, il s'agit d'uneconstruction en bton surplombe par uneconstruction en bois isole avec des ardoises defibres-ciment pour les faades et le toit sur lattisde bois ventil.

This is a housing programme that Britainshowcased at the most recent Venice Biennale ofArchitecture in 2008. By contrast to many ego-centric designs this is a project focused on builtnormality, whereby that normality is neverthelessunusual: the yellow, orange and red stripes of thefaade are fibre cement panels with an imitation

woodgrain surface sacrilege in the eyes of manyarchitects who believe that wood should look like

wood and fibre cement like fibre cement. Thediscussion about so-called authenticity flares upagain and again.

The architects of this pilot project whichwas part of the citys regeneration programme

were looking for a standard material which theynevertheless intended to apply in a non-standardmanner. Using fibre cement panels they createda contrast to the buildings 19th century neigh-bours. However, they did not want the new buil-ding to look out of place either and intended itto blend with and maybe just add a little colourto its otherwise dull environs. The 190mm widefibre cement panels are up to 3,6m long. They re-semble wooden planks and meet the architectstechnical requirements as well as their aesthetic

vision. Besides, they could be supplied in the spe-cified colours. By choosing a standard industrialproduct for this street frontage the architects

ventured to reinterpret its application in a new,creative manner.

Viewed from the street, the housing pro-gramme presents itself clearly structured intofour distinct apartment blocks with individual

windows similar to those in neighbouringbuildings. At the rear, the south-facing one- tothree-room apartments feature full glazingprotected by horizontal sun visors. The compactapartments have no corridors and some of themextend over two floors, overlapping each other.Roughly two thirds are social housing; the rema-inder is available on the open market.

Aber es ist eineunbliche Normalitt: die gelben, orangefar-benen bis roten Streifen an der Straenfassadesind Faserzementpaneele mit einer Holzstruk-tur, was fr viele Architekten ein Sakrileg ist.Holz sollte wie Holz aussehen und Faserzement

wie Faserzement. Der Streit um die sogenannteEhrlichkeit flammt immer wieder auf.

Die Architekten dieses Pilotprojekts inner-halb eines Stadtentwicklungsplans suchten

fr die Fassade ein Standardprodukt, das sie innicht blicher Weise verwenden wollten. MitFaserzementpaneelen setzten sie sich von ihrenNachbarn aus dem 19. Jahrhundert ab. Zugleich

wollten sie nicht aus dem Rahmen fallen, son-dern den Neubau farblich einbinden, aber auchetwas Frische in die ansonsten teilweise tristeGegend bringen. Die bis zu 3600 mm hohen und190 mm breiten, Brettern hnlichen Formate ausFaserzement erfllten die technischen Anfor-derungen und entsprachen ihren sthetischenVorstellungen. Auerdem waren sie in den ge-

wnschten Farben herzustellen. Die Architektenhaben mit dem gewhlten Industrieprodukt einekreative Neuinterpretation in der Anwendung frdiese Straenfassade gewagt.

Zur Strae zeigt sich der in vier Blcke ge-gliederte Wohnbau wie die angrenzenden Alt-bauten mit Einzelfenstern. Zur Rckseite nach

Sden dagegen sind die Ein- bis Drei-Zimmer-Wohnungen hinter einem horizontalen Sonnen-schutz voll verglast. Die kompakten, flurlosenWohnungen erstrecken sich zum Teil in- undbereinander greifend ber zwei Geschosse.Circa zwei Drittel sind im Rahmen des sozialenWohnungsbaus entstanden und ein Drittel frden freien Verkauf.

Le bois est sens ressembler au boiset le fibres-ciment au fibres-ciment. Le dbat surl'authenticit resurgit ici une fois de plus.

Les architectes de ce projet pilote faisant

partie d'un plan de dveloppement urbain ontcherch pour la faade un produit standard qu'ils

voulaient utiliser de faon inhabituelle. Avec lespanneaux de fibres-ciment, ils se sont loignsdes btiments 19me icle voisins. De plus, ilsne voulaient pas sortir du cadre mais plutt in-tgrer le btiment grce sa couleur et apporterun peu de fracheur dans des alentours quelquepeu maussades. Les panneaux hauts de 3600 mmmaximum et larges de 190 mm, tous de mmeformat, en fibres-ciment, respectent les exi-gences techniques et correspondent aux attentesesthtiques. Ils ont t en plus directementfabriqus dans les couleurs souhaites. Avec leproduit industriel choisi pour la faade donnantsur la rue, les architectes ont os une nouvelleinterprtation crative de son utilisation.

Le btiment donne sur la rue et est constitude quatre blocs avec des fentres individuelles

tout comme les btiments anciens voisins. Del'autre ct orient vers le sud, les appartementsde une trois pices sont entirement vitrs etpossdent des stores. Les appartements com-pacts sans couloir s'imbriquent partiellementles uns dans et sur les autres en duplex. Environdeux tiers ont t construits dans le cadre de lo-gements sociaux et un tiers pour la vente libre.

The project was developed as early as in 2003. Af-ter several failed attempts in various other com-munities, it has now been realised in Vouneuil-sous-Biard without any alterations to the originalconcept, i.e. (1) greatest possible economy in thebuilding programme, (2) heating costs to be aslow as possible, (3) pure timber construction and(4) the use of corrugated fibre cement panels, theroofing material favoured by the architects.

As regards this latter point, the client hadinitially opted for clay fired roofing tiles insteadof the corrugated sheets so that the roof would bein keeping with the local tradition. The architectstherefore changed their original plan a ccordingly.However, because of its low inclination, the tiled

roof would have needed a secondary protectivelayer underneath for which the architects chosea suitable standard product, namely corrugatedfibre cement panels. But during discussionsprior to commissioning the work, the r oofingtiles were found to be too expensive and so they

were dispensed with altogether. In order to meetthe client half-way, they chose corrugated fibrecement panels in a colour that resembled tradi-tional tiles.

The chosen roofing material suits the largetwo-storey buildings very well. Each house is divi-ded into three parts: open hallway, glazed conser-

vatory and a largely opaque cube containing themain living quarters. That in itself is divided intothe heated living area proper and an unheatedgarage-cum-shed which may be upgraded later,if and when required. There are two differentlysized types of houses, one offering just under

90 and a smaller one of roughly 70 square metrefloor space. Another solution might have been tobuild smaller volumes plus secondary outhousesand annexes. But in this case the ar chitects de-cided to assemble all functions under one roof,differentiated by their faades. As a result thisgroup of nine similarly fashioned houses formsan agreeable ensemble.

Das Projekt wurde bereits im Jahr 2003 entwik-kelt und ist nach gescheiterten Planungsversu-chen in anderen Gemeinden nun in Vouneuil-sous-Biard realisiert worden. Sein ursprngli-ches Konzept ist dabei unverndert geblieben: 1.Grtmgliche Wirtschaftlichkeit beim Bau, 2.mglichst geringe Heizkosten, 3. reine Holzbau-

weise und 4. als von den Architekten favorisier-tes Dachmaterial Faserzement-Wellplatten.

Um mit dem letzten Punkt zu beginnen: DerBauherr wollte aus Grnden der rtlichen Bau-tradition statt der Wellplatten ein Ziegeldach.Die Architekten planten um; wegen der gerin-gen Neigung der Pultdcher brauchten die ge-

wnschten Ziegel allerdings ein Unterdach. Die

Architekten whlten (voraussehend) ein dafrgeeignetes Standardprodukt, nmlich eine Well-platte aus Faserzement. Die Vergabeverhand-lungen zur Ausfhrung gingen dann so aus: dieZiegel waren teuer, man lie sie einfach weg.Um dem Bauherrn jedoch entgegenzukommen,stimmten die Architekten zu, dass die nun wie-der sichtbaren Faserzement-Wellplatten in einerZiegeln hnlichen Farbe verwendet werden.

Diese Dachdeckung passt sehr gut zu derzweigeschossigen Groform der Huser, diedreigeteilt ist: Offene Halle, verglaster Winter-garten und geschlossener Hauskubus. Dieser

wiederum ist in einen beheizten Wohnteil undeinen unbeheizten Garagen- und Schuppenteilgegliedert, der sich bei Bedarf ausbauen lsst.Es gibt zwei unterschiedlich groe Haustypen,

wobei der eine zur Zeit knapp 90 und der klei-nere Typ circa 70 Quadratmeter Wohnflche

hat. Das htte auch zu kleinen Hauskrpern plusNebengebuden und Anbauten fhren knnen.Hier aber haben die Architekten alle Nutzungenmit ihren unterschiedlichen Fassadenteilen ineinem Baukrper mit dem alles berdeckendenDach zusammengefasst die Gruppe der neunGebude bildet ein schnes Ensemble.

These houses are all part of a larger residentialquarter. What is special about them is the combi-nation of low building costs with a high standardin ecological efficiency. The ingenious system

comprises the recovery of waste heat from usedshower water and will soon also cope with theprocessing of toilet waste to extract bio-gas.Thermal insulation is 50 per cent more efficientthan required by building regulations.

Because of a strictly limited budget, buildingtechniques had to be inexpensive with the aimalso to keep future running costs low. The shellof limestone and precast concrete floor slabsis thermally insulated to a high degree, and thefaades feature wooden cladding. The roofs ar econstructed of prefabricated, self-supportingcomponents that are also highly insulated andcovered with corrugated fibre cement sheets.Small variations from the common basic conceptadd a touch of individuality to each of the threesemi-detached houses: the wooden claddingalternates between vertical and horizontal, theheight of eaves varies, the differences of two

basic ground plans are echoed by the differentlayouts of windows and, last but not least, thereare the three faade colours that playfully contra-dict the otherwise sensible repetition of faadepatterns. All houses use the same corrugated,anthracite coloured fibre cement sheets, and all

window frames are white.

Das Besondere dieser Huser, die Teil einer gr-eren Wohnsiedlung sind, ist die niedrige Bau-kostensumme bei kologisch hohem Standard.In einem ausgeklgelten System besteht von der

Abwrme des gebrauchten Duschwassers biszur Nutzung (demnchst) des WC-Abwassersfr eine Biogasanlage ein effizienter Nutzungs-kreislauf. Und die Huser sind zu 50 Prozentbesser gedmmt als es die Vorschrift verlangt.

Das beschrnkte Budget verlangte eine un-aufwndige Bauweise mit dauerhaft geringen Be-triebskosten. Die Rohbauten aus Kalksandsteinund vorgefertigten Betondecken sind hoch wr-megedmmt, die Fassaden sind mit einer Holz-schalung bekleidet. Die Dcher bestehen aus

vorfabrizierten selbsttragenden Dachelementen,natrlich auch hoch gedmmt, und mit Wellplat-ten aus Faserzement gedeckt. Kleine Varianten,also die Abweichungen vom konzeptionellenGrundgerst, geben den drei DoppelhusernIndividualitt: die Holzverschalung wechselt von

waagerecht zu senkrecht, es gibt verschiedeneTraufhhen, zwei Grundrissvarianten spiegeln

sich in unterschiedlicher Fensteranordnungwider und nicht zuletzt die drei Fassadenfarbenberspielen erfrischend die sinnvollen Wieder-holungen. Die Faserzement-Wellplatten sind beiallen Husern gleich anthrazitfarben, wie alleFensterrahmen wei sind.

verts de plaques de fibres-ciment ondules. Lespetites variantes entre la structure conceptuelledes btiments apportent une personnalit propre chacune des trois maisons jumeles : le lam-brissage en bois est alternativement horizontal

ou vertical, les gouttires possdent diffrenteshauteurs, deux variantes de plan se dtachentdans l'organisation des fentres et enfin les troiscouleurs diffrentes des faades dissimulent lesrptitions avec brio. Les panneaux de fibres-ci-ment onduls sont de couleur anthracite pour lestoutes maisons et les encadrements de fentressont tous blancs.

Things are seldom what they seem: this greyturret at the rear is not a new staircase but hasbeen designed to extend and enhance the avail-able living space. The street faade is pure 19thcentury: Victorian houses with brickwork faa-des and wide pavements to stroll on. However,the back was a mess before it was revamped:inappropriate alterations dating from previousdecades, and an altogether shabby and neglec-ted back yard. What looks straightforward nowis owing to the architects radical reorganisa-tion of the entire structure. The two buildingshave been completely refurbished inside to meettodays standards, and yet the origin al layout

has been restored so as to once more accommo-date two families. This rear-side turret-like ex-tension offers a new studio with a la rge window

just below the pitched roof. One floor belowthere is a new bathroom, and further downagain there is a new entrance with access to thebasement, the garden and the patio.

The cross sections illustrate rather betterthan the photos, how the architects have con-trived to make the roof mirror the slope of theexisting gable roof while keeping its height tothat of its ridge. And down below, the turretsbase plate rises from its lowest point at the houseto the level of the garden, thereby echoing theslope of the roof. This is a highly dynamic shape

whose few but large and undivided windowopenings introduce a new scale. Accordingly,the fibre cement panels that clad the annex arepredominantly large-scale. In between, however,

there are these narrow panels intended to lenda lively structure to the immaculately even sur-faces. The fibre cement panels have been fixedinconspicuously from the rear. Their grey colourcorresponds to the colour of the roof and, incombination with the light render of the refur-bished faade, has helped to create an agreeable,urban ambience.

Hin-ten allerdings war vor der San ierung Verhau:Anbauten, unsensible Vernderungen im Laufeder letzten Jahrzehnte, heruntergekommen undungepflegt. Was jetzt, im fertigen Zustand, soklar aussieht, war ein kluger Ordnungsprozess,dem die Architekten das Gesamte unterzogenhaben. Die Bauten sind in ihrem Inneren nach

heutigen Bedrfnissen komplett saniert unddabei trotzdem in ihrer Struktur in die frhereAufteilung fr zwei Familien rckgefhrt. Derrckseitige, turmartige Anbau beherbergt unterdem Pultdach mit dem groen Fenster ein Stu-dio. Darunter liegt ein neues Bad. Unten sind derZugang zum Souterrain, zum Garten und zurTerrasse neu gelst.

Der Schnitt zeigt besser als die Fotos, dassdie Architekten die Neigung des bestehendenSatteldachs mit dem gegenlufigen neuen Pult-dach aufgreifen, dessen oberster Punkt nichthher ist als der First des Altbaus. Auch untenendet der Anbau von seinem Fupunkt am Haus

weg schrg Richtung hher gelegenem Garten.Eine uerst dynamische Form, die mit ihren

wenigen, aber sehr groen ungeteilten Fenster-ffnungen einen neuen Mastab einfhrt. Auchdie Faserzementtafeln, mit denen die Anbauten

bekleidet sind, haben berwiegend groe For-mate. Dazwischen gliedern allerdings schmalePaneele lebhaft die makellos ebenen Flchen;die Faserzementtafeln sind rckseitig befestigt.Ihr Grau korrespondiert mit der Farbe der Dach-deckung und zusammen mit dem hellen Putzder sanierten Fassade ist ein nobles, stdtischesAmbiente entstanden.

La faade donnant sur la r ue est de style19me : des maisons victoriennes derrire desmurs de briques, des trottoirs pour se promener.De l'autre ct, il y avait cependant un certain dsordre avant la rnovation : des annexes,des modifications inappropries au cours desdernires dcennies, un btiment non entretenuet en mauvais tat. Ce qui aujourd'hui apparatordonn est le fruit du processus d'organisationauquel les architectes ont contrai nt l'ensemble.

Les btiments ont t entirement rnovs l'intrieur selon les besoins actuels et ont tout demme conserv la structure initiale prvue pourdeux familles. L'annexe en forme de tour abritesous le toit un versant avec la grande fentr e unstudio. En dessous se trouve une nouvelle sallede bain. Encore plus bas se trouve un accs pourle sous-terrain, pour le jardin et pour la ter rasse.

La coupe montre mieux que les photos queles architectes ont repris la pente du toit deux

versants existant dj pour le nouveau toit unversant dont le point suprieur n'est pas pluslev que le fate du btiment ancien. En basgalement, l'annexe se termine en oblique parrapport au jardin. Une forme extrmement dy-namique qui dfinit une nouvelle chelle avecses fentres trs grandes et non spares. Lespanneaux de fibres-ciment dont les annexes sontrecouvertes, sont en majorit de grand format.

Des panneaux troits structurent toutefois de fa-on vivante les surfaces lisses et immacules. Lespanneaux de fibres-ciment sont fixs de faoninvisible sur leur arrire. Leur couleur grise cor-respond celle de la couverture de toit et grce aucrpi clair rnov de la faade un ensemble nobleet urbain a vu le jour.

There was a time when rooms without wallpaper or soft furnishingswere seen as an indication that there was something amiss in theoccupants lifestyle; and there was a limited choice of materials for theinteriors of public buildings or offices: render, wood, fabric. Today wefind walls made of concrete, brickwork or glass just as attractive as,for example, those clad with fibre cement. All modern materials canenhance the quality of interiors.

Ever since building has become modern our attitude towardsmaterials has changed, not just that of architects but also of clientsor users. Fibre cement products have become a self-evident designfeature, and the reason for their ever-increasing popularity is theirmaterial qualities and the wide range of applications they offer. The

variety of sizes, surfaces and colours allows them to be used in privatebathrooms just as well as in luxurious public venues like concert hallsor convention centres, and not just for walls but also for doors, fittingsand furniture.

The following examples are intended to make a few novel and per-haps unexpected suggestions.

Seitdem es das Moderne Bauen gibt, haben nicht nur die Architekteneine neue Einstellung zur Materialitt gefunden, sond ern auch dieBenutzer ihrer Huser. Elemente aus Faserzement sind zum selbst-verstndlichen Gestaltungsmittel geworden, ihre bautechnischen Ma-terialqualitten sind die Grundlage fr ihre immer hufiger werdendeVerwendung. Die Anwendung der in ihren Abmessungen, Oberflchenund Farben so vielfltigen Paneele reicht heute vom privaten Bad biszur opulenten ffentlichen Halle und dort nicht nur fr Wnde, sondernebenso fr Tren, Einbauten und Mbel.

Autrefois, les murs des pices qui ne comportaient pas de tapis-serie ou de papier peint, taient le signe d'un manque de cultured'amnagement. Pour les intrieurs des btiments publics et desbureaux, on ne disposait souvent que d'un choix limit de matriauxcomme le crpi, le bois ou le tissu. A prsent, on trouve des murs enbton, en pierre brute ou en verre tout aussi intressants, que ceuxrecouverts de fibres-ciment par exemple. Tous les matriaux actuelspeuvent enrichir l'intrieur.

Depuis que l'architecture moderne existe, les architectes n'ont passeulement dvelopp une nouvelle vision de la matrialit, les habi-tants ont galement redcouvert leur maison. Les lments en fibres-ciment sont devenus trs naturellement des lments d'amnagement

et leurs qualits techniques sont la base d'utilisations de plus en plusfrquentes. Les panneaux de fibres-ciment, si divers par leurs dimen-sions, leurs surfaces et leurs couleurs, sont aujourd'hui employs dessalles de bains prives aux imposants halls publics, et ce pas seule-ment sur les murs mais galement sur les portes, les quipements etles meubles.

They serve as a kind of thespian signal that alsoidentifies the Black Box outside which, by contrast tothe otherwise white rendered building, is similarly cladwith fibre cement panels.

The large display case of this Dutch flower merchant usesdark wooden pillars which can be moved around and usedas supports for flower arrangements and such like. Wallcladding of large-scale floor-to-ceiling fibre cement pa-nels in light grey was chosen to provide a neutral backdropto this room within a room.

The rooms of the four crosswise positioned wings are allaccessed from the central hub. The walls are clad withfibre cement panels. The material, the different coloursand the use of skylights all combine to help dementiasufferers find their way around when they are out of theirown rooms and to provide a pleasant meeting place. Ori-entation as a function of building design also ensures thatthe occupants will be guided back to their rooms whencoming from outside.

This building was the last to be completed as part of therestructuring programme of a former industrial estateand has a dual purpose, namely welcoming conferencedelegates as well as motor car fans. An area between thecaf and a quiet corner serves as a central hub where wallsare clad with dark fibre cement panels, optically a pointof reference in this otherwise light and multi-functionalbuilding.

This physics classroom was designed as a prototype. Thesurfaces of fitted furniture items are natural grey fibrecement panels which are more commonly used for exte-rior faade cladding. In this case, however, the panels areglued to composite timber boards. Red chairs introduce arefreshing and colourful contrast which, next to the whitewalls and ceilings, intensifies the aesthetic effect of thegrey fibre cement linings.

Ce btiment avec sa double fonction, la fois conupour les participants aux confrences et les passionnsd'automobile, constitue le dernier lment de la restruc-turation d'un complexe industriel. Dans un espace tenantlieu la fois de caf et de salle de dtente, une zone ouverteest recouverte de panneaux de fibres-ciment sombres etconstitue ainsi un point de repre optique dans ce bti-ment sinon clair et polyvalent.

The fronts of several checkout desks along one side of thisshoe showroom have been lined with fibre cement panels.The same material has been used also for the shelvingwhere a wide range of models is on display. The fibrecement panels lining the upright support slabs have beenscrewed onto subframes and their screw-heads have beenconcealed with decorative caps.

The partition walls on this office floor feature horizontallymounted fibre cement panels next to glass and renderedsurfaces. The conspicuous grid of the panels is pickedup by the frames that surround the glazing. Visible screwfixings point to, among other things, the flexibility of thesystem.
