Early catch for a big finish at Bass N BucksRayburn Summer Series season finale

    By Patty Lenderman / Lakecaster

Tournament winners, Anglers o the Year determined and plans or 2013 announced as Bass N

Bucks wrapped up their Sam Rayburn Summer Series August 4, 2012. Winners Walter Land and Dean

Brown caught em in a hurry and weighed in beore noon with nearly 21 pounds.

The morning started out with a nice cloud cover or the competitors in the Bass N Bucks season

nale. As the day progressed, the temperature gauge continued to rise to scorching temps and bright

sunshine. Top teams reported a good early bite in deep water spots.

Walter Land and Dean Brown made a short day o it catching their sh early and bringing their

creel to be tallied beore noon. We had picked out one spot to go to. It was a main lake point, 18 eet

dropping to 25 eet. Rigged with DD22 crank baits and Texas rigged Zoom Ole Monster worms, theyhit their target spot. The rst 35 or 40 minutes, we didnt catch anything. That was really worrying us

because we had no plan B. Only one plan, one spot and one pattern. I this didnt work we were pretty

much toast. Dean broke the ice catching their kicker weighing 6.29 lbs. Ater that, we put a limit

together pretty quick. By 9:30am they had a limit and culled three times, accounting or all o their

weigh sh. We tried three other spots on our way back (to the weigh in) trying to cull one more small

sh. Never did catch one to cull it with. Knowing they had a good sack already and not wanting the

sh to become over stressed in the livewells, they made the decision to go ahead and weigh in. Their

Rounding out the top 10 includes:

total tally went to 20.91 lbs to win 1st place overall. In addition,

their kicker held or Big Bass honors.

Jason Wells and Vic Cooper caught a 2nd place check weighingin 19.91 lbs. They too targeted main lake ledges and drop osin 9-12 depths. We started catching sh right away, Jason

explained. In a airly short time, using Bomber Fat Free Shadcrankbaits on Dobyns Rods and Lews Reels, they had a limit in

the boat with plenty o time let in the day to cull with biggercatches. We hit about 10 dierent spots and was able to cull upa ew times. All total we probably caught 10 keepers all day. Theteam would like to thank Champion, Mercury, Shelby Savings

Bank, Town & Country Marine and AFI Unlimited or theirproducts and support.

16.83 lbs won 3rd place overall, brought in by Albert Collins and

Gary Martin. We had a good day! We caught most o our sh early,

but caught one here and one there all day long. They targeted two

dierent depth ranges and caught most o their sh on two dierent

baits. One targeted depth range went rom 9 to 12. Using an E2

Baits 10 Big Tail Worm, they had a limit in 45 minutes. We alsocaught several on a 6th Sense 300DD crank bait in their Candy

Citrus Shad color pattern. Albert explained that line choice made a

big dierence. He spooled with 10# test line. We hit a lot o dierent

spots, but mostly ended up bouncing back and orth with the three

best ones. We ended up culling about eight times. Their kicker

weighed about our pounds, anchoring their 3rd place win.

Now that all three Rayburn Summer Series events are

in the books, the Anglers o the Year have been determined.

Congratulations to Jason Wells and Vic Cooper or achieving

this status or the second year in a row! As part o the reward or

achieving Anglers o the Year, their entry ees will be waived or the

    Rayburn Summer Series 2013 tournaments.

There will be ve Region Championships or Bass N Bucks

qualiers. Bass N Bucks and Bud Light Trail have partnered in 2012

to oer FOUR combined championships, plus one more exclusively

or Bass N Bucks anglers. Three o the combined championships will

sh or $10,000, and one will be or a Legend Alpha 191 w/200hp

Jeane and Gleason go deep forWinat Bass N Bucks Toledo Summer Series Finale

    By Jodie Warner (Staff writer)

The temperature was up and so was the pressure on the 17 boaters shing the Bass N Bucks Toledo

Summer Series Finale, but the team o Darold Gleason and Kevin Jeane came out on top with a ve shlimit weighing in at 19.63 lbs. Coming in a close second was Scooter Clark and Ryan Pinkston with a19.33 lbs ve sh limit and Martin Elshout and Mark Price rounded out the top three with 18.55 lbs.

Fishing veteran Harold Allen took home the Big Bass award or the day with a 6.95 lb big sh.

Gleason said, We were shing deep ledges, 15-25 eet throwing deep diving crankbaits. We caught a ew

on V&M sot plastics and a ew on Stanley jigs As ar as the day, he says it was a pretty slow start, it was

kind o slow in the morning we caught two o our better ones in the morning, about our and a hal pounds,

and we had those two and two little ones at 11 a.m. We got on one good school o sh with a crankbait and wecould catch 20-30 at a time or about 20 minutes and they would stop. We would leave and come back and catch

em again, we did that about three times on that little school o sh and I nally caught our biggest one. It was

probably about the last cull we made, it was a ve-pounder at probably about 2 o clock. Gleason and Jeane took

home $2,400 or their day on the water.

Second place winners Scooter Clark and partner Ryan Pinkston caught a total o 19.33 lbs and saidthat they shed mid-lake points with worms and crankbaitsreally not all that deep, about 12-18

eet o water. It started slow, we only had two at 10 a.m. and then we just hit two good spots. In one

place we caught our and we culled one, and in another spot we caught and culled three more. Clark

1st: 19.63 lbs $2,400 Darold Gleason and Kevin Jeane

2nd: 19.33 lbs $1,236 Scooter Clark and Ryan Pinkston3rd: 18.55 lbs Martin Elshout and Mark Price

said that they caught their biggest sh o the day at around 1 p.m. Clark and Pinkston received a

check or $1,236 or their limit.

Third place went to Martin Elshout and Mark Price, and although they were just out o check

range, they still walked away with over $300 in sponsor prizes including a TFO rod (by Gary

Lummis,) $100 worth o Rat-L-Traps and a $100 git certicate to V&M Cyclone Baits. The duo said,

We were shing mid-lake. We caught them deep, about 20 eet, on a Carolina rig and a crankbait.

Elshout said that the heat and sun werent really too bad where they were shing and that they even

were surprised with a little bit o rain in the morning hours. He said, We caught a lot o sh, andhad a limit in the rst 30 minutes. We probably caught about 50, but just no big ones. Four pounds is

    about the biggest we caught.

Harold Allen took home the prize or Big Bass with a 6.95 lb big sh, but ell short o being able toget a ve sh limit landing him with only 12.34 total pounds. Allen said he caught the big sh on an11 inch red worm, shing deep, 18 next to 25 [eet,] [at] the end o a long ridge. [We were shing] in

just one o those places where i you catch one out there, its a good one. [Its the] rst time weve beenthere all summer. We had a tough day. We were struggling all day long, just couldnt get in the groove.

This was the nal event or the Toledo Summer Series, and ater the weigh-in Scooter Clark and Ryan

Pinkston were named the Anglers o the Year with Gleason and Jeane coming in second in the points. The Bass N Bucks Championship or Toledo Bend will be on October 20-21 at Cypress Bend.

Tournament Director Bryan Davis said about the Toledo Bend Summer Series, This is our rst yeardoing it. Weve been mildly successul with the rst year, and werent expecting a whole lot out o it.

[We] averaged about 26 teams which is not bad or a rst year division. Hopeully next year we should

get it up around 40 or 50 or so. We had pretty good payouts today. It was a low number that we had, I

think the guys were happy with everything that went on. I just wish we had some more anglers.

As or what is coming up, Davis said, Spring series or Rayburn or Bass N Bucks starts up on

December 1. Itll be January or the Toledo Bend Series. For the Toledo Series, well be going out o

Cypress Bend and a little bit out o Big Bass Marina next year, then well do the Summer Series again

and thatll be out o Big Bass Marina.

Davis also said that, Championship or Toledo Bend will be on October 20-21, were giving away a

Legend Alpha-191, valued at $45,000. Itll be a two day tournament and then on Rayburn were giving

away the same thing but itll be September 18-19.He would also like to remind anglers that he also puts on another tournament series, the Bud Light

Trail and says, The Bud Light Fall Series starts up on Rayburn on August 18 and its going to have two

championships or it, one will be on Lake Falcon and one will be on Ray Roberts during the Dallas

Boat Show where well be doing a live remote weigh-in there too.

Also, Davis added another note saying that Bass N Bucks will be expanding to Lake Fork withanother ve tour division making the Bass N Bucks Spring Series a 15 tournament series. The SummerSeries will be a nine tournament series overall, all will still have the same ve sh limit or weigh-in.

10 Things To Do When The

    Normal Doesnt Work

Most all o us have experienced the utter rustration o tossing

everything we have in the tacklebox at nicky bass. Books written

by good shermen tell us what we should do, but unortunately

bass dont read these books. Here are ten potential solutions to

many o these rustrations so give them a try.

    (1) When schooling bass wont hit a thing I have two approaches tothe problem. The rst is a clever little bait made by Crme Lures

called the Mad Dad Minnow. Its a 2.5-inch sot plastic crankbait

that has a built-in weight and a wild vibrating action when

retrieved. It has a small prole, you can cast it way out there and

it can be shed at any depth. I have caught schoolies on this

when they wouldnt even touch another bait.

    (2) Another technique is to rig a small spoon or tube-jig a couple

o eet under a weighted popping cork. Yes the type that you

use in saltwater shing. An open-bail reel on a long rod

works best or this since the key is to spot the schoolies

(which always seem to be just out o your casting range),make a long cast past the school with the weighted cork, and

then slowly pop the bait back through the school.

    (3) When you see a Beetle Spin you usually think about

crappie. This bait can also be super deadly or bass. Use the

-oz model; add a dierent blade i you desire, but then take

some pliers and crimp down the wire so the harness wont

open. Fish the bait in the weeds, grass, and most other p laces

that you wouldnt dare sh those expensive baits you are

araid o losing. The bait is very weedless, comes in a variety

o colors and has been attracting bass or many, many years.

    (4) Get Grubby! One o the weapons used silently by many pros is

a plastic grub body placed on a lead-head jig. The bait can becast or jigged vertically, and can put bass in the boat ast. The

weight o the jig-head will depend on the depth that you are

shing but I like the , 3/8 and -oz. models. I recommend

the watermelon green, smoke, white, motor oil or red colors

and a 3 or 4-inch lure body. You must be a line watcher

because about 90 % o your strikes will be on the all and you

need to set the hook ast.

    (5) Most anglers in the Texas/Louisiana area sh the Carolina-

rig and or good reason it will catch sh in a variety o

conditions. But in the last ew years I have ound that it also

has a deadly application and that is doodle socking. Thisis an older term associated with the technique o jigging a

bait vertically up and down on deeper water ledges, humps,

etc. When using a Carolina-rig, the key is to allow the sinker

to all to the bottom and then raise the rod tip up just a bit

more than the length o the leader you are using to keep

the bait dancing enticingly right above the bottom. Best

techniques seem to be using either a slight jiggle o the bait

or raising the bait higher and let it slowly all.

    (6) I you are not using one o the products such as Dip-N-Glo

on the tail o your sot plastic worms, etc. you are probably

missing out on some sh. Dipping the bait not only penetrates

the bait or a permanent color change but also adds a scent

change such as garlic, gamesh or even crawsh. Dont overdo

it just add a bit to the tail o the bait.

    (7) Tired o using all o those big jigs etc. when punching the

grass? How about using a heavy weedless jig-head but replace

the body with a centipede or fuke. The action is much dierent

and at times can be just what is needed to trigger a strike.

    (8) Flutter spoons (usually about 5-inches in length) have been

around or a while but are not used by many anglers. Its

a simple process and works great when bass are suspended

and eeding on shad. Simply cast the spoon out and as it alls

eather it down with a slight tension on the line. Strikes

will usually be a solid thump and the large spoon canattract bass o all sizes. I a strike does not occur when the

bait is alling use a sharp pop o the rod tip and make the

bait jump o the bottom a oot or more as you work it back

to the boat. I the bait gets hung up on a tree bass just get

directly over the bait and gently jiggle it and it will usually

    work itsel ree.

    (9) Dead Sticking is a technique that can be eectively used

with many types o baits. The key to this is patience. I

using say a fuke, make the cast and allow the bait to sink

to the bottom, pop the rod up to make the bait jump o the

bottom, and then dont move the bait or 15-seconds or more.Same technique or a top water bait. Make the cast, allow

the ripples to go away, pop the bait gently and then wait

15-seconds or more beore you move the bait again. That

15-seconds doesnt sound long until you are shing, but this

    technique can be deadly.

    (10) My nal suggestion is one that you deeper water shermen

will love. The next time you see lots o sh on your electronics

that are holding at a certain depth (say 25), rig your avorite

5-inch swimbait on a weedless -1/2-oz. jig head and use

this technique. Cast the bait out and count it down to the

depth you want to sh. Now use the trolling motor andstroll the bait through the sh and hold onto your rod

because it can sure attract big bass (and stripers). Strolling

will allow the bait to stay in the strike zone in a horizontal

plane, whereas when you are casting the bait it only stays in

this zone a brie period o time beore it starts coming up as

you retrieve it back to the boat. Change the depth o the bait

count-down as you see the sh change depths on your graph.

Well there you are a ew o my suggestions or things to tr y when

the going gets really tough. I predict that some o these will soonbecome your avorite and most productive ways to wet a hook.

By Dan Ashe (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department)

    The Litter Bug Family

    Goes on a Picnic

I will never orget one o my very rst biology classes long ago

when my proessor made me realize that just because you go to

college does not equate to a career. My proessor walked in and

looked around, which made me want to look around, and Ill

never orget what he said next on that August day 24 years ago:

Only a handul o you will be around working as biologists

in 10 years. In 20 years maybe only one or two o you will still be

in the eld. There are three groups o you as there is in all classes

and they consist o 1) The preservationists - you are the ones thatare the romantics and believe things should be looked at rom aar

and adored. You do not eel like you are worthy to touch nature

and nor should anyone else. You will ail. 2) The majority o you

will realize that there is more lucrative things you can do with a

biology degree and you will go on to other endeavors in time as

you learn the pay is low, the hours long, and working conditions

are bad. I wish you good travels. 3) The conservationists - you are

the ones that have the best chance. You are not araid to live with

nature and you do not mind others doing the same. You have the

best chance. Some o you will stick.

Ok, I was one o the ones that made it and looking back therewas a lot o truth in what that man told us that day. Most o my

classmates have gone on to other things. Some foundered around

or awhile and never ound their niche. Its been bumpy along the

way to say the least but I think I have learned a thing or two by

what my proessor meant about conservation and accepting that

others will share the land and water with you. The main thing

Ive learned is that even though Im called a natural resource

manager, I dont really manage natural resources at all I deal

with people all kinds o people. Most are just ordinary people

wanting the ordinary things like a plot o area to live and raise

a amily, clean water, a good shing hole or those rare days

they have o rom work, ability to make a living to provide orthemselves, etc. However some people are the Litter Bug Family

and Im not sure i Im wearing my biologist hat or my Dan hat,

but I know I have a problem with the Litter Bug Family, and the

    Game Wardens do as well.

I want to be clear. I encourage everyone to spend time outdoors

and enjoy themselves. But, when I see the complete disrespect that

some have or nature and all the other olks trying to benet rom

it, I will speak up and do everything in my power to ensure this is

    kept to a minimum.

As you can see rom the pictures, the scattered trash was a

result o a amily outing or two at Hidden Beach at Sam Rayburn. They packed in drinks and chips, and they made sandwiches (asevidenced by the copious amounts o cheese wrappers). There were

young children there (as evidenced by the discarded plastic foat

and swim goggle packaging) as well as a baby (as evidenced bythe numerous diapers). What types o people can pack all this stu

down to the beach, but lack the decency to tote their trash out? Whatan absolute disgrace! I would have written these people a ticket andpersonally gone to court with them to request that their sentence

require trash pick-up. I hope they enjoyed their trip to HiddenBeach, because others that showed up to this certainly didnt.

As always, i you should have any questions concerning thisarticle or have any other shery questions please dont hesitate

aRboRetum gussies up FoR Fall extRavaganza

    By SHARON KERRJasper Master Gardeners

Lots o olks think Spring is Natures big show, when everything

bursts in bloom, but thats just the opening act. Some o the most

amazing spectacles are saved or the grand nale in Fall, and East

    Texans have ront row seats.

Master Gardeners worked long hours in summers 100+ heatto get Jasper Arboretum ready to welcome visitors to the all

extravaganza that unolds in September and October.

Most species o migratory birds o North America pass through

here on their way south, most notably hummingbirds o every

description. Some hummingbird eeders will have 40 or 50

hummers lined up all during September.

Hummingbirds.net says, Banding studies suggest that

individual birds may ollow a set route year ater year, oten

arriving at the same eeder on the same day.

Jasper Master Gardeners like Martha and Gene Hamilton are

more interested in the monarch butterfy migration. Jasper sitssquare in the middle o one o three migratory paths.

Its only in the last ew decades that scientists realized that

monarchs rom all over North America go to Mexicos wooded

canyons to hibernate or winter. In spring, they an out along

three major fyways. West coast butterfies go through El Paso and

Arizona, Rocky Mountain monarchs go through the Texas Hill

Country, and all monarchs destined or the central plains, easternstates and northeast Canada migrate through East Texas. Fall

is homecoming or descendants o the super-generation that

    overwintered in Mexico.

Whats really amazing is that it is not the same individual

butterfies that were here in the spring, Martha Hamilton says.

And yet, they somehow know their way back.

As they spread north, the monarch stops and lays eggswherever they nd milkweed. Then the next generation continues

the journey. The ones who reach the Canadian border may be

their great great grandchildren, and by the time their ospring

come back to Texas in the all, they are many times-great-great

grandchildren o the monarch who pollinated your gardens last

    May.

Fall Fest has been a tradition in Jasper or years, always the rst Saturday in October. This year Master

Gardeners and Lakes Area Hospice are planning the rst annual Butterfy Fest to expand the event,

normally on the courthouse lawn, to include many activities at the Jasper Arboretum on Water Street.

The new tourist train should make that one block up-and-down hill journey a pleasure.

We want them to name the new huttle train the Butterf Expre, Martha Hamilton

joed. We want eerone to thin o Japer a the Butterf Capital o Texa.

The Jasper Arboretum Project was started many years ago by the Womans Civic Club o Jasper.

Estelle Debney, who was president, led the campaign to get the city to set aside land on both sides o

Sandy Creek rom Main Street to Highway 96 to be developed as public gardens and a park.

Dr. Dave Creech, renowned horticulturalist rom Stephen F. Austin State University, developed a

long-term plan that included ountains, nature paths and ormal gardens.

Until she died, Debney worked tirelessly to raise unds or the Jasper Arboretum in spite o setbacks

like Hurricanes Rita and Ike. A non-prot organization continues her work, but they needed more

volunteers or the hands-on hard labor.

Jasper Master Gardeners took on building the greenhouse and butterfy garden on the north bank

near the library and re hall. The back o the greenhouse includes an outdoor classroom and potting

shed with a view o all the wildlie along the banks o Sandy Creek.

Future plans include a ootbridge and walking trails on the south side, with Master Naturalists

aiding in development o a nature center. At Butterfy / Fall Fest, volunteers rom both organizations will host short educational programs or

kids at the greenhouse, and ree adult programs every hal-hour in the courthouse.

Chamber o Commerce director Liz Street suggested the idea ater seeing the Nacogdoches AgriLie

oce oer programs at Blueberry Festival.

It gives people a chance to come inside and rest a minute, cool o or warm up--you never know

about all weather in East Texasand go back and enjoy more o the estival, Street said.

Martha Hamilton, one o many presenters, will show how she raises and tags monarchs, ollowed by

a release down at the Arboretum butterfy garden.

Inormation rom our tagged butterfies is helping scientists understand the migration, Hamilton

said, And anyone can learn to do what we do and help.

With luck and a lot o community support, project director Hugh Pickle says the rst o two pondsshould be ready or the grand opening Oct. 6. Centerpiece or the meditation pond on Water Street is a

yard-long piece o petried wood rom Jasper County donated by Campbell Timberland Management.

Its hollow center allows or it to be tted as ountain.

We want everyone to know this is a work in progress and always will be but now they can

really see our progress, Pickle said.

Beth Pickle says the lantanas, vines and milkweed in the butterfy garden may seem small this year,

but just wait. She uses an old saying to explain why transplants take a while to get going:frst year

they sleep, next year they creep, and third year they leap.

Most o the plants, mulch and materials were donated by master gardeners and local businesses,

according to the Pickles. With no irrigation in place yet, volunteers had to haul water by hand to keep

the young plants alive. For several years the Arboretum and Master Gardeners were playing catch-up ater Hurricanes Rita

and Ike, trying to get the library and Beaty Orton gardens and Kiwanis Park back in shape.

Now that they see the greenhouse up and ull, and the butterfy gardens and pond taking shape,

were getting all kinds o community support, Pickle said. All o this is being done by donations,

money raised at plant sales, and volunteer labor. The city has been very supportive, and they have

leant their crews to clear the south bank and more, but other than that, its not tax dollars but our

sweat equity that is building all this.

Pickle says every time they told people what they needed, donations and contributions rolled in. Few

Concrete donated material or the walkways in the greenhouse. Jasper County donated brick rom the

old gym building or the patio. Texas Electric Co-op donated wood. Walmart donated pallet loads ogarden materials. L & L loaned equipment to move dirt. Coburns will supply irrigation materials.

This is a project we want the community to be able to enjoy and admire or a long time to come,

said Master Gardener president David Goderoy.

I see this as something that brings so many o our organizations together to work or a common

goal, something that we can all be proud o and continue to build and learn rom or generations to

come, said Jasper Ag agent Chadd Caperton.

Donation alwa till needed: Martha Hamilton says they need pots o all sizes and description,

potting mix, perlite, vermiculite, etc. Theyve also had generous donations o plants, man o which can

be counted as giving twice : rst they go in the gardens, and then we propagate more or plant sales

according to Hamilton. Master Gardener plant sales now go toward the Sittin Pretty und, whose

goal is to provide big lawn swings, many benches and picnic tables. For questions, call the AgriLie oce at 409-384-3721.

Randall and Taylor conquer BudLight Fall Series-Jasper kick-off on August 18

    By: Jodie Warner

The BudLight Fall Series-Jasper on Lake Sam Rayburn began on Saturday August 18 at Cassels

Boykin in Zavalla. Tournament director Bryan Davis said that he had about 16 boats pay in to sh,

but only 11 came back or the weigh in. Anglers complained o cloudy conditions and tough wind

throughout the day causing them to catch lower weight limits, i a limit at all.

Donald Randall and Don Taylor came out on top with a total weight o 19.21 pounds with a ve

sh limit. They said they shed deep...about 20-22 eet. Jokingly, they laughed that they shed with

rods and reels, but then revealed, we used jigs and spoons. According to the pair the shing was

good all day, kind o slow until about 10 a.m., it was slow rom about 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.mbut

we did have one that was about ve pounds [anchoring the limit.]

The notorious team o Harold Allen and Albert Collins came in second place in the kick o event with

a ve sh limit weighing 16.08 lbs. Allen said that they shed points and creek beds with big wormsand jigs. They said, it was a slow day, we caught a couple in the rst place [we went to,] we wentto the second place and caught one or two, it was just one or two bites wherever we went. Allen and

Collins said that, it was a gradual process, we caught about 15 keepers, [and] it took a lot o culling byounces. Allen was using IRod and US Reels while Collins used a Jones Custom Rod. They shed shallowat rst at about ve to eight eet o water, but said that they caught them as deep as 20 eet.

Michael Trpkosh and Je Fisher came in third at the event with a ve sh limit totaling 14.16 lbs.

We were shing grass, about 15 oot with sot plastics, they said. The team also stated, we started

out shallow, looking or top water bites and couldnt catch anything. We did catch a couple on a swim

jig and then we started working deep. They also insist, the sun killed us today, we needed the sun.We had a pretty big lull rom midmorning until about 12:30-1 p.m., [then] it started getting a little bit

better and we caught some better sh. Trpkosh and Fisher said that they were only able to cull three

times during the process o the day. They would like to thank their sponsors: Mercury, Legend Boats,

    Santone Lures, and Power Poles.

The Big Bass title was captured by Jared Dean who weighed in a 7.60 lbs big bass, more than halo he and partner Jason Deans ull weigh in o 13.20 lbs. Dean wasnt the rst to weigh in a seven-pounder though, the tournament saw a 7.42 lbs sh rom the team o Larry Badgett and Shane Howell.

The next event or the BudLight Fall Series-Jasper will be at Umphrey Pavilion on October 6. For

more inormation about the BudLight series visit www.budlighttrail.com.

September 2012 brings the promiseo cooler weather. Fall is in the air andBig Sam has started to come out othe grip o another hot summer. Thenights will be getting longer and things

will begin to cool down. The lake hasbeen in great shape this year and youshould nd the lake level about 4 to 6t below pool. That is about the normallevel or this time o year. Keep this inmind when youre running around thelake as you may see a little more timberabove the water. That also means thereis a lot more lurking just under thesurace. I youre new to the lake geta couple o maps because each willshow things a little dierently. Look at

the areas that have timber then add alittle extra to the timberline, that willhelp you stay a little saer. There is stilltimber that moves around rom timeto time so always keep an eye open orwhat we call foaters. One day they maybe just o a point and the next, 100yards or more away. As the water dropsyou will start to see more sandbars andlong points just under the water. Be alittle cautious as a change in watercolor rom a green tint to a sandy colorcould mean youre coming up to oneo those places

Big Sam is the biggest lake that issolely in Texas with miles o shorelineto sh; most o it undeveloped; whichgives you the eeling o being at onewith nature. The shad will start tomove toward the pockets and the shwill be right behind them. The hydrillais still spotty but you have some bassusing whatever they can nd or cover.

Fall is a great time or the top waterbite. I cant think o any other baitthan the Stanley Ribbit to cover a loto water and nd some eeding sh.A couple more baits to try are Yellow

Magic or Spook Jr. Sometimes theywant something buzzing across thewater, sometimes they want a bait tojust sit, with a small pop now and then.Walking the dog with the spook is oneo my avorites. The Stanley spinnerbait is one to use this time o year, cover a lot o water and pickup a ewsh. White or shad color to start withbut dont leave out the chartreuse orcitrus colors. Sometimes color makesthe dierence in catching a ew sh

or a bunch o sh. Using crank baitso the points, creek channels andledges will nd a ew sh as they movein chasing the shad. There should besome sh schooling and a small crankbait or trap will get a ew in the boator some ast and un action. Now onthe deeper side o things, dragginga Stanley Football Jig around thepoints and creek channels can be away to pick up some good sh. This issomething that I like to do but I thinkabout how a crawsh moves along thebottom. Keeping my dragging to slowmovements, with a ew hops now andthen, most o the time they hit it onthe all. You really have to eel the shsuck the bait in and then set the hook. Most olks never eel the sh suck it in,all they eel is the bait dropping backto the bottom. The Carolina and Texasrigs will also work around the points, ledges and deep drops out to 27 oot.

The sh have been scattered out andstaying on cover or a ew days beoremoving on. Feeling the bite is the keyhere and having good rods and linemakes all the dierence.

American Rodsmiths has somegreat rods that t this bill. They can, with practice, help an angler tell ithey really have a bite or the bait is justhitting the bottom o the lake. The guysthat eel the bite are the ones catchingthe bigger sh and leaving you in thedust. More inormation about dierentrods and line to come.

The Crappie have been active allyear and will start to be more activearound the brush piles as all gets

here. They should start to get into theall pattern beore moving up the riverand creeks as they do each year. Dontsit at home and miss out on the un.Weve seen a all trip boat 100 sh asthey move up the river. Everyone hasloved the pontoon with the shade andthe changing room with the port-o-potty. We even have a an that can helpi you get too hot out there. It makesthe trip a lot nicer or everyone. Getyour all trip booked. We can handleup to 8 anglers.

Dont orget about the white bassthat move up river in the late all andspring. Some o these trips can load acooler in a hurry with action and unor everyone. Yes these sh are goodeating sh here on Sam Rayburn. The kids can catch a sh that thinksits a bull in a china closet. Nothingis more exciting than watching themReel um N.

Were all looking orward to thecooler weather that starts coming ourway in September. As the water cools, the sh will become more active.

For bass, start using your topwaterbaits around the edges o pepper grasspatches and lily pads. Later in theday move toward secondary pointsworking your way to the backs o

creeks and pockets with crank baits.Wacky worms are always a reliablebait and un to catch plenty o sh

with. I you like to sh deep water, tieon a Carolina rig and sit your boatin shallow water at main lake pointsthrowing out toward deep water andworking it back to you.

The crappie will be moving back tobrush piles in 25-28 depths. Minnowsare always the best bait or crappie, but articial lures and jigs will work

well too.Have a little un noodling or

    catsh. Noodling will provide great

un and a lot o action all during theall months. Put your noodles at themouths o pockets, but try to alwaysbe able to play the wind. Make surethat the wind will be moving yournoodles into the pockets so they wontbe hard to nd when you go to gatherthem back up. Live perch works best.

I you have any questions, eel ree

to call us and well be glad to help!
