I was interested to read an article in the paper last week on the health benefits of meditation. The focus was actually on mindful eating. This was excellent timing as we are currently looking at savouring in Year 12/13 PPP.

Apparently on average we are speed eaters, completing eating our three main meals of the day in a total of 23 minutes, where we should be spending at least 20 minutes on each meal. Eating too quickly has been linked to eating more than we need, to weight gain and diabetes. One problem is that we often eat with distractions such as loud music, television or as we work on the computer or we are rushing to do something else. We don’t really take the time to appreciate what we are eating.

Savouring is about slowing down, being in the moment and appreciating the small things. According to research the following savouring activities can help increase happiness:

• Savour and reminisce with others

• Be open to beauty

• Celebrate good news

• Replay happy events to yourself

• Take photos

• Create a journal to write down the moments you want to savour

• Create an album to collect happy memories

The exercise we have been completing with the senior students involves savouring a small piece of chocolate or a sultana. We take time to use all our senses – before we eat it we ask, what does it look like, feel like and smell like? As we eat it, what does it sound like, taste like and feel like? This mindfulness leads to greater appreciation and pleasure. Try this next time you grab a piece of chocolate.

Also next dinner you have together as a family take your time, pause between mouthfuls and savour the flavours and textures of your meal and your time together.

Anglican Schools Conference/PilgrimageThe Anglican Schools Office organised a conference/pilgrimage to the Bay of Islands in Auckland. This was part of the preparations for the Bicentennial of Anglicanism in Aotetearoa, including the arrival of Samuel Marsden and the first missionaries who came at the invitation of the Ngapuhi iwi by Ruatara.

The Anglican Schools Office invited its members (Principals, Chaplains, HoDs RE, and a number of Bishops) to attend. Jenny Williams, Nigel Schofield-Matthews, Ann Winnall, Kim Methorst and Sandy Williams attended from Marsden Karori and Whitby. They were given the opportunity to see places from New Zealand history, hear the voice of those involved at the time through talks and presentations offered by historians and researchers of Anglican history, and to discuss these issues in companionable groups. They were also given the chance to discuss and enter into dialogue with each other

on topics such as the Treaty of Waitangi and the Anglicans involvement in the Treaty; what an Anglican school should look like in the 21st century; how should RE teams and Chaplaincies work together. These were all interspersed with a beautiful powhiri at the Waitangi marae, moments of worship and shared Eucharist.

As part of the special nature of this Hui, student representatives from Anglican schools were invited to attend, following their own parallel youth-orientated conference/pilgrimage and joining with the adults at certain points such as shared meals and the Eucharist. Those who attended described the event as a wonderful experience, full of new insight, moments of awe, and a feeling that they were, and are, part of something bigger and meaningful. It gave many a renewed sense of God’s presence in all that is done as Anglicans and educators.

This term Sarah King joined the Marsden School whanau as Chaplain. She is the mother of two teenagers and worships at St Barnabas Anglican Church in Roseneath where her husband is the vicar. Sarah has worked in the Wellington Diocese’s Young Person’s Office, led Sunday School, holiday clubs and has ministered to children and families in church and the community for many years. Last year she completed a Graduate Diploma of Teaching at Victoria University and is now working towards a Diploma in Anglican Studies and a level 2 certificate in Te Ara Reo Maori.

If she has any spare time at all, Sarah enjoys cooking for friends, eliminating weeds from her garden and various craft projects – currently a 4 metre long Dr Who scarf for her son. She will be at school every day until after lunch, or you can contact her on 027 491 2245 or email [email protected]

West Side Story

Well done to all of the cast and crew involved in West Side Story at the end of Term 2. Audiences were very impressed with the quality of the singing and commented on the stunning costumes and choreography, not to mention the fight scenes! A big thank you to everyone that assisted with bringing this beautiful musical to the stage.

More photos and an article on the show will feature in the annual edition of Word from Marsden.

Lighting Workshop

A group of senior students took part in a four day lighting workshop run by Lighthaus Ltd, a part of MJF lighting. Students enjoyed the hands-on approach to the course and were able to use their newly acquired skills to plan and rig the lights for West Side Story. A big thank you to the Parents’ Association and the Marsden Old Girls’ Association for funding this workshop for staff and students.

Annual Careers EveningOver 150 students and their families from Karori and Whitby campuses attended the evening on 14 August. This annual event is open to Year 10 to 13 students and the goal of the evening is to have speakers who showcase several careers, along with tertiary education providers. Different careers are featured each year so that the students can hear about many different options. Study Link attend to present information about student loans. Feedback from those who attended this year was very positive and we encour-age you to attend in future years, as it is an informative and interesting night to share with your daughter or son. Grate-ful thanks to the presenters who shared their career stories: Joy Cottle, Dr Mark Simmonds, Jennie Johnstone, James Johnston, Clare Barrett, Deb Leuchars, Dr Elspeth Tilley, Caroline McQuarrie, Josh Bailey, Shirley Wang, Deb Cumming, Angela Brown, Andrea Gluyas, Serena Smalley, Lyn Garrett and Anne Barnett. Their support was greatly appreciated.

The Upper School Library was a recipient of a Parent’s Association grant that allowed us to mobilise the Library’s fiction shelving. The shelving was reconfigured just before the holidays, and since then we have had enquiries and bookings for this space. House Music and the Careers Evening this term have enabled us to showcase the flexibility of this area.

Year 10 students recently spent the day at Zealandia as part of their Science Art Biodiversity task. Educator Brian Ireland gave the students an excellent introduction then they headed off into the valley with staff, parents and volunteer guides. The rest of the day was spent learning about New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna, sketching a range of plants and animals and learning a wide range of background information in the visitor centre.

Thank you to parents Mr Buchanan, Mr Farrah, Mrs Heycoop, Ms McNamara and Mrs Smith who accompanied the students.

Greetings from Marsden Primary on a beautiful sunny day! The trees are in blossom and recently at lunchtime some of the Year 3 girls were marvelling at the beautiful shades of rhododendrons in neighbouring gardens. We have certainly had a mild winter with few indoor lunches.

The girls are active on a daily basis with, for example, regular Jump Jam sessions in the Junior Syndicate. They have enjoyed the short walk to the Karori Recreation Centre for their gymnastic rotation this term. Several of the classes have worked alongside students studying NCEA PE in the Upper School. These girls have planned lessons for our girls and taken the classes supervised by their specialist teachers. With fewer than 20% of Primary School students walking regularly to school these opportunities are important to maintain a reasonable level of fitness.

At the annual Swimming Sports we were especially impressed this year by the large number of confident swimmers, and also by those beginners who were swimming lengths, or getting their faces wet or even getting into the pool for the first time. It’s not always about winning, but about setting and achieving personal goals. The deep-rooted sense of satisfaction and wellbeing that comes from striving and pushing through difficulties is long lasting.

The Senior Syndicate (Years 4-6) had a marvellous tour of the Andy Warhol exhibition: Immortal at Te Papa. Girls from Year 5 presented some of their writing at assembly in the days following:

“I especially liked the artwork… that was offset because it definitely looked wonderful and because his media was inspired by photo booths.” Grace, Year 5

On recent tours of the school visitors have been very impressed at how engaged the girls are in their work and also how happy and buoyant they seem in class. The peer group you select for your daughter’s education is immensely important as an influence on motivation, achievement, persistence and all those qualities we see in a successful learner. Having expanded the weekly virtues this year to include some of the Character Strengths from Positive Psychology,

we have been exploring qualities such as open-mindedness, perspective and wisdom, appreciation of beauty and excellence at Monday Chapel services. We can see the effect of these weekly sessions in class discussions and in the children’s work and we will continue to foster these ideals.

We recently welcomed Sarah King as the School’s new Chaplain. Sarah has just completed postgraduate training as a primary teacher and is a friendly face around the school. She is now taking Wednesday Chapel services and the girls have very much enjoyed participating in dramas and role plays, and reading out the bible stories.

Thank you to all the parents who have supported our programmes in the last few weeks. We appreciate your cooperation and especially the care and concern shown on our wobbly earthquake days. We have your children’s interests at heart and please be reassured that they will be well looked after until you are able to collect them from school.

A final thank you goes to the Parents’ Association who have recently funded some new colourful ottomans in the Library, a fabulous weather-excluding screen for outdoors in Preschool - which means we can still work on the carpentry table on windy days, and an e-reader for the Library.

The Association (MPA) is pleased to see the fruits of their fundraising efforts. They have gifted $32,000 of resources across all areas of the school.

This included a defibrillator which has been installed outside the Cultural Centre. This life-saving device will benefit the Karori community as well as the school.

A new piano for use by itinerant music teachers means the girls can continue to play on a quality instrument; and new hands free microphones contributed to the success of the West Side Story production, adding greatly to the quality of the sound. The microphones will also be useful for a number of other events in the Auditorium.

Science teachers have expressed their appreciation of the equipment gifted to them by the Association. This included a Geiger counter for senior physics and probes for handheld data loggers.

The new rollaway shelving units gifted by the MPA to the Library mean that new learning spaces can be created. New colourful furniture in the primary school library has also been well received by teachers, who note its brightness and comfort, enticing young readers to sit down with a good book.

A full list of the resources gifted to the school is available on the MPA pages of the Marsden website http://www.marsden.school.nz/marsden-karori/

Members of the Year 13 Leavers Ball Committee are working hard to ensure this will be a night to remember.

The Leavers Ball has long been a tradition at Marsden. We are one of the very few schools that hold a real debutante ball. This is a true family event and marks and celebrates the students time at Marsden embodying the Marsden Spirit of Excellence, Giving, Resilience and Creativity. The Ball also marks the transition to another stage of life for students as they leave the school, acknowledging that they will always be part of the Marsden family.

Do you still have your old ball dress?

The Committee is looking for photos of Marsden old girls at previous Leavers Balls and/or their actual dresses. They hope to display these at the school to show the younger girls how balls looked in times past. If you are an old girl and still have your old ball dress or a photo and are willing to loan these for display, please contact Ginny Morrison on [email protected] or Carolyn Wylie on [email protected]

Simon Woolf photography night

Over 50 people attended the Simon Woolf Photography night raising $1,000 for the school. Simon donated his time and shared his insights and work, providing ideas and knowledge on

better use of cameras. He also showed some of his wonderful photography and shared special moments of his life. Refreshments at the end topped off an interesting evening.

Dates of School Dances 2013

Most school dances for the year groups have been held and many thanks to the parents who helped organise these.

The final dance of the year will be the Year 11 Semi Formal on Friday 20 September held at the Boat Shed. Tickets will go on sale in the last week of August.

Strategic planning for the MPA

It has been some years since the MPA has looked at its role and what it would like to achieve. This year the Association will hold a planning day in Term 4 and prior to this will be conducting a small online survey of parents to get their views on the Association and what they want to see it do. Maximum participation in the survey will ensure valuable information as the strategic planning process begins.

Thank you in advance for participating in this survey.

Contact the Committee

Please feel free to contact the Association about any of its activities or any other matter they can help with. Contact details for the Committee are on the MPA website. http://www.marsden.school.nz/marsden-karori/community/parents-association
