    4/31Breathing Fire into Learning

Student achievement is the No. 1 priority of our school district, measured by each

child’s success from kindergarten through high school. This is gauged by more than

just grades, tes t scores and grade point averages. Our focus is on the whole child

    – their social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth. We mold our students into

quality young men and women, prepared to take on the future!

The results of our educators’ hard work speak for themselves:

Educating our Students for the Challenges of Tomorrow

    For more information, visit www.lakeorion.k12.mi.us

    Find us on:

DRAGON TALK: It takes everyone to educate the whole child

districts around the state. The district’sunique approach to middle school team-teaching is working, too. Not only do ourstudents build unique bonds with our middleschool educators, but they score higher thanthe national average in all testing categoriesin the annual EXPLORE/ACT assessment. In addition, our 2013 student MEAP scores

in third through eighth grades rank LakeOrion among the top ten districts in OaklandCounty. At the high school level, ourMichigan Merit Exam and ACT scores aresignificantly higher in all subject areascompared to other districts. In fact, our highschool juniors have increased their averageACT score for seven consecutive years –

one of only two high schools in OaklandCounty to accomplish this. A number ourprograms have received awards, mostrecently our early literacy interventionprogram for kindergarten and first-gradestudents. Last year it was recognized with

multiple excellence in education honors. How are the new state standards

impacting the way our students are taught? The new standards require students to

apply their knowledge rather than simplymemorize facts and recall information. Theyrequire critical thinking, problem solving, communication and the ability to apply theseskills in a variety of subject areas. In order toteach these skills, lessons must include morestudent engagement, collaboration and adeeper exploration of the content beingtaught. Students have to be active

participants in the classroom and lessonsmust be designed to allow students to exploreand apply their knowledge.

How can parents work with educators toassure their students’ success?

It’s important to set high expectations foryour child. We encourage parents to discusswith students what they are learning and dothings as a family that support learning. Thisincludes a focus on reading, which is thecornerstone of all learning activities. Also, openly communicate with your student’steachers. We welcome parents to visit theschools and see firsthand how our students

are responding favorably to these teachingtechniques.

Like any organization, the Lake Orionschool district continually strives to improvehow it operates and provide value to itscustomers – the students and families whoare part of our educational community. HeidiMercer, Assistant Superintendent of

Teaching and Learning, shares her thoughtson what makes the district’s schools amongthe best in Oakland County and the State.

What distinguishes Lake Orion’sapproach to educating students compared to

other school districts? We educate the whole

child from the start of pre-kindergarten through highschool. This means to havea truly successful studentthere must be balancebetween his or her social,

emotional, physical andcognitive growth. We look at a child’s individual needsin each of these areas. Wealso recognize what worksfor one student may notwork for another. Finally,

we feel strongly that educating a childrequires a partnership with the student, parents, community and school district.

What evidence is there that Lake Orion’sapproach works?

Our students are achieving and peopleare noticing. Lake Orion’s elementaryreading, writing and math workshopprograms are being emulated by other school

Since first opening in 1936, Genisys hascontinued to experience growth. In 2014,Genisys opened a brand new state-of-the-artbranch in Downtown Royal Oak and wasapproved by Oxford Village Council to builda new branch location in the Downtown area,

which is expected to open February 17, 2015.Additionally, by an overwhelming vote,

members of Tri-Pointe Community CreditUnion approved a merger with Genisys CreditUnion. The expected official date of mergingthese two financially strong Michigan creditunions will be April 1, 2015 with the consoli-dation of operations to continue throughoutthe year. The combined credit unions, whichwill operate under the Genisys name, will haveassets totaling more than $1.8 billion and willprovide services to nearly 175,000 members.

The expanded operations will include a totalof twenty-nine branches; twenty-six of theseare Michigan locations.

In addition to the branch locations,Genisys continues to offer 5,000 sharedbranches and nearly 30,000 surcharge-freeATMs nationwide to its members.

In 2014, Genisys Credit Union sponsoredover 400 community events, including serv-ing as premier sponsor at several events inClarkston, Lake Orion, Ortonville, and Oxford. Some of these sponsorships included the

Clarkston Concerts in the Park, the Lake OrionBig Rig Gig, Ortonville’s Septemberfest, and

The Genisys family volunteered for OLHSA’s Walk for Warmth at Great Lakes CrossingCelebrate Lone Ranger (formally CelebrateOxford).

Last year, the Genisys family logged over3,500 volunteer hours and fundraised over$28,000 for Oakland Livingston Human Ser-vice Agency’s (OLHSA) Walk for Warmth.

In addition, they donated over $38,000

through their United Way campaign and wereable to provide $10,500 in donations to localorganizations through their Employee CasualDay Fund.

“One of our core values is to remainpeople-focused, and we strive to make a dif-ference in each of the communities where weare located,” said Jackie Buchanan, President

and CEO.Genisys provides all of the traditional fi-

nancial services to anyone who lives or worksin the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, includ-ing home loans, auto loans, small businesslending, merchant processing, and additionalretail and business financial services.Genisys is one of the few financial institu-

tions that offer a debit card with a rewards

program. Plus, they are now offering aMasterCard credit card that enables membersto earn points and combine them with theirdebit card points to redeem for rewards evenfaster. Last year, members redeemed over 105million reward points for free gift cards, travelreimbursements and merchandise.

Genisys is proud to provide members with

24/7 access to their accounts. In 2014, Genisyslaunched a simpler streamlined online account

opening experience. Individuals can applyfor a membership either online or by using atablet or mobile device. This convenient ser-vice allows potential members to completelyopen an account without visiting a branch.Forms are created and signed electronically

and funding the account is quick and easy. Once a member has opened an account,

they are able to access their accountsthrough the free Genisys mobile banking ap-plication available for both iPhone and An-droid devices. With home prices and mortgageinterest rates reaching historic lows, you’ve probably listened to friends’,families, and coworkers’ advice, manyof whom are encouraging you to takeadvantage of this time and buy a home.

However, you may still wonder if buying a home is the right thing to do.Having reservations is normal, but themore you know about buying a home, the less daunting the entire process willbe. Genisys Credit Union, whichprovides services to anyone who livesor works in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, would like to help you avoidthe top five mistakes when taking thenecessary steps to becoming a homeowner.

     1. Not researching the mortgagelender.  It is necessary to research thelender you will be working with toensure that this company is reputableand offers the programs that help firsttime homebuyers.

    can takeupwards of a month.You willwant tomake surea l l o we n o u g htime to, getp r e -approved,shop for a

    4. Not getting the home inspectedbefore closing. It is important to have aninspection done prior to closing on a houseto ensure that you are aware of any repairsthat may need to be done prior to or in the

future. Those issues may affect yourdecision to purchase that home.

     5. Forgetting to save for your closingand other pre-paid costs. Aside from thedown payment, there are often other coststhat need to be considered when buying a

    h o u s e .These caninclude butare notlimited toc l o s i n gc o s t ,r e a l t o rf e e s ,applicationfees, homeo w n e r s

    RELIABLE COVERAGE

Great Lakes Independent Insurance meets all insurance needsGreat Lakes Independent Insurance takes

the guess work and the hassle out of insur-ance shopping, says agent/manager, JimHutton.

The agency – which provides auto, life, homeowners, and commercial insurance, hasbeen in Orion since December 2008.

Though they have been here five year, they have been in business since 1996 andwere formerly east of Orion. The Orion loca-tion enables Great Lakes Independent to rep-resent many top rated insurance companies.

Because Lake Orion is less saturated withsimilar agencies in comparison to other metro-Detroit areas, Great Lakes Independent is at-tractive to a bigger number of insurance pro-viders. More providers mean more rate shop-ping and lower rates – a good thing for cus-

tomers.“If we were a smaller agency, we wouldnot be able to represent as many quality in-surance companies as we do,” said Hutton. The agency in turn passes the savings andthe convenience of one stop insurance shop-ping onto its customers.

“We offer a variety of companies,” Huttonsaid. “If one company shifts markets and isnot trending well, we’re able to shop a ratefor our customers.”

Though customers could end up with adifferent insurance provider “they still have

the same Great Lakes Independent Insuranceagent, with the same service,” according to

Hutton.“You get to know that person,

you build a relationship. No matterwhich insurance company GreatLakes Independent places you with, you will have the same agent work-ing for you day in and day out, andthat’s nice,” he said.

Hutton comes from a “captivebackground” in insurance and notedthat when rates shifted higher, it wasoften “painful” for customers.

“Here, we are able to retain cus-tomers at renewal if their currentcompany has an increase we canshift from one insurance companyto another,” he said.

    “That benefits customers be-

cause we can shop for them to finda cheaper rate. They can make onephone call instead of five or six.”

At Great Lakes Independent’sdisposal are 16 different insuranceproviders: Auto Owners, BristolWest, Citizens, Encompass, Fore-most, Great lakes Casualty,Haggerty, Hartford, J.M. Wilson,

Mercury, Progressive, Safeco, Titan, Travel-ers, Victoria, and Zurich.

Great Lakes Independent can also helpidentify the right insurance company for par-

ticular groups, like people fifty years andolder, or families with young drivers.

Great Lakes Independent InsuranceAgency is looking forward to meeting youand proud to be a member of the community.

If your schedule does not permit time for

a stop in quote, they will be happy to quoteyou by phone, and Great Lakes Independent

Insurance Agency would liked to say thanksfor the opportunity to quote your insuranceneeds.

    16/31

Twenty-seven years ago Tony Saferianstarted a roofing business with a simple codeof ethics. He believed you’re nothing if youdon’t stand behind your word. He engrained

this in the minds of his crew members, themeaning of doing a job the correct way.

Now with his son, the Vice President andright hand man of SureGuard Roofing,Saferian hasn't lost sight of those ethics.

“Your word means a lot and you’re a manof your word,” he said. “If you live by thatyour blessings will be plentiful and peoplewill trust you.”

Entering the 28th year of operation in LakeOrion, Saferian and his son, Dillion Phillips, have perfected a business model that car-ries through to several caveats of their busi-ness.

Residential and Commercial Roofing:A large amount of intel SureGuard gath-

ers on a job site is done before any crewssink a single nail. Saferian, Phillips, and othercrew members take an investigator’s ap-proach when assessing the needs of a cus-tomer. Their minds aren’t on dollars signsand shingles, rather the best course of ac-tion for each individual roof.

“We look for signs of mold that may be in the attic frompoor ventilation from bathroom vans,” Saferian said. “Wewant to make sure nothing is rotte d, broke or dipping in theattic. We want to make sure we check water run offs and

drainage.”As Mother Nature still reminds us that she exists, both of them are constantly concerned with ice and water damage.Phillips expressed concerns in modern housing develop-ments where they’re seeing a trend in ice build up. Watermay hit the corner of the house and pond and turn to ice.Causing ice problems and leaking through the siding.

“A lot of time in these new subdivisions you see thegarage roof coming down into the side of the house,” phillipssaid. “So there’s potential for ice and water damage into thehouse and roof.”

Sureguard offers a base package on a full roof replace-ment. That package is not something that’s poor quality noris it filled with exotic extras; it’s a financial option for peoplethat both Saferian and Phillips would feel comfortable put-ting on their own home.

“We’re not going to sell you something just because wecan. This industry is huge for overselling and I’m not thatguy,” Saferian said.

Saferian and Phillips approach every job and every projectas if it’s the most expensive job they’ve every taken on.Time and money are never factors when dealing with thequality they’re putting on display. The horror stories of cus-

tomers getting ripped off by contractors or receiving poorworkmanship is a daily motivator for the father and son duo.

“We all had mothers and grandmothers and I wouldn’twant that to happen to mine or yours.” Saferian said. “I’m

not going to rush my guys to finish a job because that de-creases quality.”SureGuard just doesn’t end with roofing on their residen-

tial specialties. Their crews also tackle siding, trim, guttersand insulation. Regardless of the what the job entails, eitherPhillips or Saferian will make trips to the job site to ensurehigh customer service.

“We still check on the job two and three times a day. Iwant the home owner to know we care about quality andthat I’m looking after their investment,” Phillips said.

The company, which is based in downtown Lake Orion, also deals a lot with commercial aspects. They employ 12highly skilled workers whose primary focus are on all thingscommercial. They will handle any project from a simply tarrepair to a complete roof replacement on a factory.

“We do it right because we have families and childrenwalking into stores and shops; that drives us to do these jobs right in these commercial buildings,” Saferian said.

The Little Things:What makes SureGuard a truly special company is their

attention to the little things that go into a job. They take thetime to replace a lightbulb or fix a piece of cracked drywall. They’re also not looking to expand their company so that

they cover the entire state.“I’m not trying to grow the business where

I work 100 miles away,” Saferian said. “I like tostay with in 20 miles or so of a job. That way if

someone calls me and they need help, I canget there quick.”The two also put emphasis on worker train-

ing to ensure they’re not going in blind to a job or a product. Its the hope of Phillips andSaferian that these little things and the atten-tion to detail they put in their product will jogthe public’s mind with that need help.

“We want to become a house hold name,”Phillips said. “Someone can see us and feelsafe and secure knowing we’re doing it rightand we’re here for them.”

SureGuard Roofing was incorporated intothe Better Business Bureau in 1989 and withtheir service it has earned t hem an A+ rating. They offer 24/7 emergency response serviceand they’re currently offering free estimatesand free inspections. If you have any ques-tions about your roof or siding you can callSureGuard at 248-364-4444. You can also seetheir previous work atwww.sureguardroofing.com or search them onFacebook.

Metropolitan Tree works full time, year-round and stands out from other treecompanies demonstrated by the high ratings and awards received from variousorganizations.

While other tree companies have comeand gone—Metropolitan Tree Inc. has con-tinued to serve the area for more than 49years. There must be a reason.

In addtion to an office in Ortonville—Metropolitan Tree also has a location inClarkston.

“We have worked all over Michigan,”said Ron Pepera, owner and communitymember since 1960. “I’d personally liketo thank all our loyal customers that havesupported us over the past years. We striveto maintain a high level of service and pro-vide the highest quality work for a reason-able price.”

A member of the Better Business Bu-reau, Metropolitan Tree and their employ-

ees take pride in the work they do and goout of their way to protect your property, surrounding trees and landscape while re-moving trees and stumps.

Metropolitan Tree has all the skilled manpower, climbers, cranes, aerial lift trucks, chippers, stump grinders, heavy brushmowers and equipment to remove largeand hazadous trees and stumps. Fromsmall jobs to land clearing, residential andcommercial.Metropolitan Tree takes pride

in providing personal service to all theircustomers.

Metropolitan Tree Inc., full time, personal, professional service

Experienced managers Pepera or Rob-ert Gillon will be on the job site to super-vise all jobs.

“We are fully insured for your peace of mind,” said Pepera. “Same full service atdiscount prices.”

When you call during business hours, you can talk to Bonnie—not a machine 98percent of the time. Special arrangementscan be made for unexpected tree work.

Whether trees pose a danger, becomediseased or are damaged after a storm—the professionals at Metropolitan Tree are

ready to help.Pepera reminds customers that liability

and workman’s compensation insuranceis needed prior to tree cutting or you willbe liable for injuries or damages.

In addtion to qualified removal and dis-posal of diseased or infested trees, Met-ropolitan Tree also does contract work forcounties, local municipalities, building con-tractors, commerical and residential cus-tomers.

During the past years, millions of areatrees have become infested with a variety

of diseases from Dutch Elm disease, toEmerald Ash Borer and recently the Saw-yer beetles that feed on the bark of twigsof susceptible live pine trees.

“While the tree may be standing—the

roots rot first underground. If a tree is deadfor three years or more it’s ready to goover,” he said.

“We understand that economically it’stough right now,” said Pepera. “We canwork with you to set up special condi-tions for payment. It’s much easier to dealwith a standing tree now rather than a treethat has fallen on your home.

Customers should feel confident withMetropolitian Tree and it shows by the greatnumber of referrals from our satisfied cus-

tomers. Thank you to all the previous andcurrent customers that have used our ser-vice over the years—we appreciate yourbusiness. We are honored to help enhanceyour property values and keep the com-munity safe from hazardous trees.
