    BASIS FOR ACCEPT ANCE

    A company earns the ADA Seal for its product by providing evidence that meets the ADA criteria for safety and efficacy. The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs carefully evaluates the evidence according tothe Guidelines for Participation in the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance Program and any individual productguidelines if they exist. In addition, the ADA Council has adopted a specific guideline for this productcategory called Sugar Free Chewing Gums to Help Reduce-Prevent Cavities . There are two ways asugar-free chewing gum can demonstrate it meets the ADA Guidelines:

    through Clinical Studies

    using Surrogate Tests

    Both are valid for showing product safety and efficacy. They are described below.

    Clinical Studies: One way sugar free gums that help prevent and reduce cavities can earn the Seal is

    by being used in clinical studies. The clinical studies compare actual reductions in cavities between twogroups of tests subjects. The first group chewed gum; the second group did not. In these types of studies, the results need to show that the group chewing the gum developed significantly fewer cavitiesthan the non-chewing group. Seminal clinical studies were performed by the Wrigley Corporation. Those studies demonstrated that children who chewed sugar-free gum for 20 minutes, 3 times a dayfollowing meals had significantly fewer cavities than children who did not chew sugar-free gum.

    Surrogate Tests: Another valid method that can be used to establish efficacy of sugar free gums for helping to reduce decay is surrogate tests. These tests measure surrogates that have been shown tocorrelate with the development of cavities. For sugar free gums, these surrogate tests include effect onsalivary flow (i.e. how much saliva is produced by chewing gum), effect on salivary pH (i.e. a measure of saliva acidity) and the ability of salvia to remineralize teeth (i.e. make them more resistant to toothdecay). Well-designed surrogate tests are much quicker and easier to do than clinical studies, but are

    just as good at showing product effectiveness. The surrogate tests for Acceptance of sugar free gumsare detailed in the ADA Guidelines for Sugar Free Gums to Help Reduce/Prevent Cavities (2010).

    Acceptance of Extra Sugarfree Gum was awarded based on the results of c linical studies given in the ADA Guidelines for Sugar Free Gums to Help Reduce /Prevent Cavities to earn the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
