What is GigaPan? www.gigapan.org

• Part of Global Connection Project

• Uses a robotic pan tilt unit, standard digital camera, stitching software

• Accessible and affordable method for producing gigapixel images

INTRO BACKGROUND DESCRIPTION DESIGN CONCLUSION

What is Stereoscopy?• Capturing three-

dimensional information• Accomplished using a pair

of images, a left and a right• Can be used to reconstruct

3d scenes, such as anaglyphs

INTRO BACKGROUND DESCRIPTION DESIGN CONCLUSION

Proposed Project• Modify GigaPan setup to accept two

cameras for stereo visioning• Use GigaPan stitching technology to

create gigapixel images that can be transformed into point clouds and anaglyphs

• Optimize for use in site surveys by allowing use of remote control and wireless synchronization

Requirements and Ideas• Add a second camera to GigaPan unit• Build anaglyphs using full size Panoramas• Build true 3D models using Vision Workbench• Support External Flash• Bracketed Exposures• Incorporate multiple viewpoints for more complete 3D models• Manually and automatically generated tie points• Incorporate into Microsoft PhotoSynth• Wireless synchronization of multiple Pan/Tilt units• Remote Control of Pan/Tilt units via Serial Interface• External Power Management of Cameras• Create more user friendly software for duplicating procedure

The Gameplan• Modify the commercial GigaPan unit to accept a

stereo pair of cameras• Modify camera firmware to be compatible with the

GigaPan unit’s digital trigger• Build software for generating point clouds and 3D

models• Develop more reliable power supply• Test various camera panning strategies to

maximize depth accuracy• Develop a replicable process

Potential Issues to Resolve

• Accurate depth representation

• Acquiring second GigaPan for alternate panning strategy

• Cleaning up point cloud artifacts
