“The times they are a changin.” When Robert
Zimmerman, (aka Bob Dylan) wrote those
words in 1963, we know he wasn’t thinking
about Shir Tikvah, but they are certainly
applicable to our evolving congregation.
Each month as we write the message for the
bulletin, more and more changes have been
made as we continue to meld into one
unified congregation.
With our March Bulletin we are pleased to
introduce a new logo for Shir Tikvah. Our
board has been meeting with Marc Fishman,
a professional graphic designer, over a
period of several months, and together, have
developed a logo that represents our new
entity. We wanted a logo that was fresh,
would age well and clearly states what Shir
Tikvah stands for and represents. The hands
stand for a welcoming and open
congregation, where all of us can feel
comfortable as we attend services, social
events and educational programs. The hands
also represent the warmth and caring of our
congregation and congregants. It is a logo
that we should all take pride in and be proud
of the organization that we are creating
together.
In addition, thanks to our Facilities
Committee and Bob, we continue to improve
and modernize our building. Our Transition
Committee has developed a new mission
statement, which was approved by the board.
They are also working on renovating our
library, making it more user friendly and
publicizing it to the congregation. We now
have a joint Kiddush after Saturday morning

Beit AmiChai Hebrew School
At last it is the month of March, the month that Spring begins and hopefully Winter weather will ease up
for us! It is also the time to celebrate Purim! This year, Congregation Beth Israel in Munster is hosting our
joint Purim carnival. The carnival will take place on Sunday, March 17th from 10:00-11:45 am. It is always
so much fun to get together with the other congregations in the area to celebrate holidays.
We will continue our Purim celebration on Wednesday, March 20th at Shir Tikvah at 7:00 pm for the
reading of the Megillah. There will not be Hebrew School that day so families can come and celebrate
Purim. Ice Cream will be served prior to the reading of the Megillah.
We look forward to the school and community joining together on Friday, March 8th for a family service
at Temple Anshe Sholom at 7:00 pm. Nancy Friedman will lead the Youth Choir that evening.
Thank you to everyone who generously supported our Butter Braid fundraiser.
~
services and have combined our separate Religious Committees into one who work together on
Conservative and Reform services. We have one Fundraising Committee and our social events are
all unified. Our former Sisterhoods are now the Women of Shir Tikvah. Our first Membership
Directory and Ad Book is now at the printer — thank you Ad Book Committee.
We just recently had our first Bar Mitzvah. Mazel tov and congratulations to Louie and the
Bloomberg family.
So while Bob Dylan didn’t have Shir Tikvah in mind, we certainly are a changin as we continue to
build an entity that we can all be proud of and supportive.

Women of Shir Tikvah
So, what’s next on our agenda?
On Sunday, March 3rd, 12 Noon we have a Brunch and Book Review, “Eternal Life,” by Dara Horn.
What would it really mean to live forever?
Rachel’s current troubles―a middle-aged son mining digital currency in her basement, a scientist granddaughter trying to peek into her genes―are only the latest in a litany spanning dozens of countries, scores of marriages, hundreds of children, and 2,000 years, going back to Roman-occupied Jerusalem. Only one person shares her immortality: an illicit lover who pursues her through the ages. But when her children develop technologies that could change her fate, Rachel must find a way
out. From ancient religion to the scientific frontier, Dara Horn pits our efforts to make life last against the deeper challenge of making life worth living.
Next you are invited to our First Passover Taste n’ Tell featuring delicious recipes for Passover. Make, bring and share your favorite recipe! We’re compiling a book of the recipes so send yours in to the office today! Just put Taste n’ Tell in the memo. Email the office.
Wednesday, March 27th, 6:00-8:00pm No charge but donations are welcomed.
Birthday Luncheon at Aurelio’s Pizzeria in Homewood Each 2nd Thursday, we gather at 12:30pm to celebrate the birthdays in the month! So if you have a birthday in March, come and celebrate with us! It’s a great time to gather, gab, and grab lunch together.
Support the Sisterhood by purchasing Jewel Cards! We receive a percentage from each card we sell. Denominations are $25, $50 and $100 and are available in the office. Thanks for your support! As you can see, our sisterhood, the Women of Shir Tikvah, is active and vibrant. We hope to see you at our events as we celebrate and support Shir Tikvah! B’Shalom Donelle Macey & Jean Gilbert Co-Presidents, Women of Shir Tikvah
Wow! The Erev Oscar Party was super fun! If you missed it, well,
there’s always next year. We met on the red carpet, shared an abundance
of hors d'oeuvres, and watched a great movie. The group was intimate;
the attired ranged the gamut, and everyone had a great time.

The 6th Annual JCC Chicago Jewish Film Festival runs March 1 – 17 and features 43 films at venues across the city and suburbs: ArcLight Theaters in Glenview and Chicago; Cinemark Theatres in Deer Park and Evanston; the Music Box Theatre in Lakeview; and special screenings at the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie and the Hotel at Midtown in Chicago. This year, the festival includes a World Premiere, 12 Midwest Premieres and 4 Chicago Premieres, along with insightful talkbacks following many of the films, all totaling 96 screenings over the course of the three weekends. The 2019 JCC Chicago Jewish Film Festival is a celebration of strength and resilience, and in particular, a tribute to strong female protagonists whose experiences made a difference for their families and the world. Golda’s Balcony, a one-woman film about Israel’s fearless, first and only woman to serve as Prime Minister, is brought to life through the critically-acclaimed performance by Tovah Feldshuh. Grateful, a closer-to-home story about a 40-something mom and wife, Jenni Berebitsky, who has ALS, has left audiences laughing through tears and in awe of this brave and inspirational woman. The timely feature film, Working Woman, is a drama from Israel about an ambitious career woman who struggles to restore her dignity after receiving unwanted advances from her boss. The JCC Chicago Jewish Film Festival has grown from modest beginnings to engaging over 12,000 movie lovers in 2018. The 2019 festival is poised to reach even more people through the diverse selection of film and special events. https://jccfilmfest.jccchicago.org/
