THERE is endless fascination withinthe huge tome called Bombay:Exploring the Jewish UrbanHeritage, written by former Bycullaboy and student of Barnes School,Deolali, Shaul Sapir. We must warn you that it is not

exactly bedtime reading, for thesimple reason that it is too largeand heavy to cart around (or curlup with!). But placed on a table, itis easy to immerse oneself in thehistory of the Jewish people inBombay and the kind of heritagethey have left behind for us.Besides the schools, hospitals

and synagogues, they createdmuseums and reading rooms, andpublic spaces like gardens andmuseums. Byculla, in particular, where a large contingent of theBaghdadi Jews lived, benefitedgreatly, and to this day there isevidence of not just what thecommunity accomplished, inschools and hospitals, but that theylived here peacefully andunmolested, unlike their fate in

many parts of the world.Off Clare Road in Byculla, there

is the entrance to the PadmakarTukaram Mane Udyan, popular asthe PTM Garden. But it started outas the Jew Garden and within itsconfines, it is believed that therewas also a Jewish cemetery, ofwhich no trace survives today. And then there is Masjid Station,

which many believe referred to amosque. According to the book, itrefers to the first synagogue intown, built in 1796 by one SamajiHassaji (Samuel Ezekiel) Divekar, aBene Israeli, in thanksgiving forsurviving captivity under TipuSultan. The locals referred to thestructure in the Israel Mohalla asthe Musjid, and so, when theBritish built the first railway trackfrom Bombay to Thana, we gotMasjid Bunder, or SynagogueStation. There is a lot more in the book,

and we shall keep bringing you bitsof Bombay Jewish history as we goalong.

Liberated from aliberal educationWE have to hand it to young AdityaThackeray. All those of us withchildren educated in institutionslike St. Xavier’s College have tocontend with their swiftly-developed liberal cheek, constantlyquestioning, arguing, and askingfor answers. It can be quitetiresome, but then, a liberaleducation is expected toembody the spirit ofenlightenment, which emphasiseseducation for its own sake, personal enrichment and theteaching of values. Not our words, just Wikipedia’s. Plus the collegebranding is good! But the head of the Yuva Sena

has managed three years (orperhaps five) in a liberal collegeand emerged completelyunscathed and untouched by allthe liberal garbage that issupposed to equip students formodern living.Witness the ease three

years ago with which the youthwing of the Shiv Sena, with Adityaat its head, managed to strong-armMumbai University into droppingRohinton Mistry’s ‘Such a LongJourney’ from its curriculumwhen it was pointed out by some

members of the BharatiVidyarthi Sena that some parts ofthe books were “offensive to theThackerays.”And now the Yuva Sena, filled

with enthusiasm for the cause ofeducation, has cracked down firmlyon a college principal when shehad the temerity to questionstudents who handed her a letterdemanding an explanation as towhy she was not allowing them tohold a college festival that they hadset their hearts on having. Who isAditya Thackeray, she reportedlyasked, and her loyal andrespectful students promptly shotfootage of her saying so on theirsmart little phones and handed itback to the political party youthwing for further action, which is, aswe know, the only way to handlethe entire education system of thiscountry. So now the college will be

holding the festival and thestudents can be proud ofthemselves for the rolethey have played in bringing itabout. In fact, it mightbe a good idea to hold aspecial function to felicitatethem and use this as acase study in how to bring astubborn principal to heel whenshe insists on knowing what isgood for you..

DIARY

THIS is for people of a certainage, including this diary writer, who can still remember what theywere doing when the news was

passed on through All IndiaRadio that the AmericanPresident, John F. Kennedy hadbeen assassinated.

It had to be radio – what wouldyou expect in 1963 when eventelevision was in its ‘beta’ stage, with a few wavy lines andtremulous images and voicespassing for broadcast in NewDelhi! But you remembered the

moment you received the news ofthe Dallas shooting, coming homefrom school with nothing on yourmind but the thought of the finalexaminations looming just acouple of days ahead. And youwondered why adults seemed sodistraught, though the thoughtthat newspapers would never becarrying pictures again of a liveand personable John F. Kennedytugged at the heart-strings, as didthe innumerable pictures flashedacross the world, showing bloodon the First Lady’s pink suit facedwith grey, and a pink pillbox hatabove dazed eyes. What a long journey the world

has made since then. Weremember what we were doingwhen Indira Gandhi wasassassinated, when Rajiv Gandhiwas blown to bits, when the WorldTrade Centre came down, whenOsama bin Laden was taken out.Or we would, if it were not too

much, too soon and all the time!

Unique REAP project to stop tribalchildren from migrating andlosing out on schoolingBy A Staff Reporter

November 20 was a unique day that saw aunique hostel for tribal children in the

tribal hamlet of Lahe, off Khardi highwaybeing inaugurated. The uniqueness is thatthese children, who would have migratedwith their parents to work, will now not be

deprived of their education. The other unique feature is that the board-

ing is in the hamlet itself and one of the tribalinhabitants has given his house to be used asthe ‘boarding’ for these children. Two cou-ples from the hamlet have volunteered to bethe ‘parents’ and look after the kids.In rural areas, especially among the

Katkari tribes, migration to other cities towork in brick kilns and sugar factories is acommon thing. Poverty and landlessnessforces them to migrate for their survival.Every year after Diwali, familiesmigrate andreturn only in June. They take their children

alongwith them, whichmeans that their ed-ucation is hampered. This cycle is repeatedevery year, and thousands of tribal childrenlose out on education. This problem has been engaging the

minds of REAP (Reach Education ActionProgramme), an NGO which works in thearea. REAP networks with about 100 ZillaParishad Schools in Bhiwandi, Sange, Sha-hapur and Khardi areas to bring quality edu-cation to the tribal children. It also runs aboarding for tribal girls in Dolkhamb, Sha-hapur Taluka, to encourage tribal girls tocomplete high school. Currently, 40 tribalgirls are studying there.Since the last two years, REAP has been

toying with the idea of doing something toprevent migration of kids from happening, and came up with this idea of a sixmonth temporary boarding. The conceptwas not easy to sell.Several meetings were held with the vil-

lagers to convince themabout the plan. Eventhe school principal and staff went aroundconvincing them. Finally, the planwas inau-gurated yesterday by the Director, Dr. TrevorMiranda, in the presence of the zillaparishad area development officials, headmaster, school teachers, the village sarpanch(who also happens to be a teacher in REAP’sprogramme), school-going children from thevillage and villagers. The school officials said that this was a

step in the right direction. The director an-nounced that this was a pilot project, and ifit succeeded, many more six-month board-ings would be opened in villages next year toprevent children losing out due tomigration. The director also announced, to cheers, that REAP would provide toilets and solarlights in the village.

Unhappy with new state government directives statingprincipals will be held responsible for school bus accidents

Teachers to boycottSSC, HSC exams

By Yatin Ingle

While the state govern-ment has finally

brought up the revised direc-tives for school buses, theteachers are not happy. Stat-ing that the teachers will beheld responsible in cases ofmishaps, accidents or anydamage caused to the stu-dents traveling in the schoolbuses, angry teachers haveplanned to boycott the boardexams.Last week, the state educa-

tion department had issueda Government Resolution(GR), which stated that anymishap or accident causedinvolving students travelingin the school buses, the prin-cipal will be held responsi-ble. Being unhappy with thisdirective, the teachers haveasked the state governmentto revise and change the GRfailing which they willprotest and boycott the SSC,HSC board exams.

Prashanth Redji, Secretary,Maharashtra State Second-ary and Higher SecondaryPrincipals Union tod theADC, “We are principals andteachers, we do not drive theschool buses, we take care ofthe students inside theschool gates and when wetravel with them on theschool buses. How can the

state government blame usand hold us responsible forany mishap or accidentcaused by the school bus. This is sheer injustice and il-logical!”Redji added, “If this GR is

not revised again, the teach-ers union will not hesitate toboycott the SSC, HSC boardexams.”

The BombayHigh Court willbe told that the Goa VikasParty (GVP) legislator Cae-

tano Silva, may attract provi-sions of disqualification as theHomeMinistry has found him tobe a Portuguese citizen, therebylosing Indian nationality.A high court petition filed

against Silva alias Caitu allegesthat he registered his birth inPortugal just two years ago, onJuly 21, 2010 claiming that itamounts to having Portuguesecitizenship. The petition is filed byValanka

Alemao, the Congress candidate, who lost against him in the re-cently held Assembly election.Valanka has thus sought Caitu’sdisqualification since he be-comes a Portuguese citizen, whocannot contest election inIndia.Though she had filed the peti-

tion on 18 April, she had de-clined to comment on itscontent stating that it won’t beproper on her part to disclose it.After a detailed verification

with Portuguese government, the Home Ministry has foundthat Silva had taken citizenshipof Portugal and hence he ceasedto be an Indian citizen. The findings will be conveyed

to the High Court which is hear-ing a case on Silva’s citizenship.Alemao said, “If the accusa-

tion is correct, then a Portuguesecitizen functioning as Goa MLAshall be a fraud on the Constitu-tion of India. Under the Consti-tution of India, points out AdvCoutinho, no person can be acitizen of India if he/she has vol-untarily acquired the citizenshipof any foreign country. One ofthe fundamental criteria to con-test elections in India is that thecandidate must be a citizen ofIndia.”

mind, the Directorate of Pri-mary Education has statedthat admissions to play-groups or nursery schoolswill not take place in Novem-ber and December anymoreand can be started only inApril and May for the aca-demic session starting inJune. A notification will soonbe issued in this regard in-forming all education officersso that educational institutesstop conducting admissionsin November or December.According to the notifica-

tion, this new directive willbring transparency in the ad-mission process and willmake parents less stressedabout their child’s admissionin pre-primary schools.Anuj Kumar Pandey, Vice

President, All India Federa-tion of ParentsTeachers Asso-ciation (PTA), says, “Cityschools have been puttingadvertisements about admis-sions and taking advantage ofseats by demanding capita-tion fees. Parents have toqueue up early in the morn-

ing and get hold of an admis-sion form and then run foradmissions. This new direc-tive will stop the bargainingof capitation fees by schools, and the PTA welcomes thisnew directive.”However, parents who

sought admission for theirchildren in themonths of Oc-tober and November havesuffered a jolt due to this newdirective as their admissionswill be considered illegal. When the ADC spoke to

Mahavir Mane, Director, Pri-mary School Education, hesaid, “Now admissions canonly be carried out in themonth of April and May.Those admissions whichhave been taken before thestatedmonthswill be consid-ered illegal. The admissionprocess for Standard I on-wards is completed in Mayand this rule also applies topre-school courses. Hence,no schools will be allowed toconduct admissions in No-vember or December. tained, the project will be de-veloped and the Request forQuotations (RFQ) will be un-derway by the end of thismonth.“A cashless settlement will

be donewith land owners op-posed to their land being ac-quired for the airport. It island for land. For everyhectare of land acquired, 12.5per cent developed land willbe given to Project AffectedPersons (PAPs), and in termsof the current market value, this wouldwork out to 19.5 crper hectare. This is an un-precedented package,“ saidBhatia.Bhatia also stated that the

tendering process has beenstarted and a suitable devel-oper will be handed the proj-ect. The developer in turn willhave to follow a rule whichstates that 50 per cent of thework has to be carried outthrough PAPs in the project asper the DSR rate. The government has of-

fered PAPs 22.5 per cent de-veloped land against the usualpractice of offering them 12.5per cent as well as cash.

Bhatia added, “The PAPshave been offered compensa-tion which was probably thebest deal given in similar landacquisition cases. CIDCOwasextremely keen on coming upwith an airport in the MMR.”“If required, we are toying

with the idea of setting up thenew airport on land re-claimed from the sea nearPanvel creek. But we under-stand that doing so woulddelay the project evenfurther, which is somethingwe definitely do not want,”

he said.According to Bhatia, the

ambulance/ taxi should becalled by the stationmaster orhis representative. But sincethis directivewas not followedby Khara, an activist has de-manded that a departmentalinquiry should be conductedagainst him for this lapse.According to Sharat Chan-

drayan, Chief Public RelationOfficer, WR: “At present thereis no provision for an ambu-lance at Palghar railway sta-tion. Since it is a health issue, acommon ambulance shouldbe provided in Palghar for ac-cidents on roads and railwaytracks, which will be cost ef-fective.”

IT is the fear of punishment that stops peo-ple fromcommitting crimes.Take away thatfear factor and the number of crimes will

rise further. The system, as it is, eliminates fearto a great extent. Criminals know that - thanksto the lack of proper investigations, delay intrial and lackof convictions, theymayget awayscot-free or at themost get a fewmonths in jail. The jail life should be painful and hard. It,

however, is not. Criminals donotmind spend-ing a fewmonths or years in jail.It is the fear of having to put up with rotten

food, hours of labour, only the floor to sleepon, thatmakecriminals stay awayas far aspossiblefromcrime. If they get a ‘cushy’ life in jail, mostpeople would not mind spending months injail.Jail life should be hell – there should not be

any bed of roses there.According to a study, the conviction rate in

Mumbai is only 7 per cent. This is quite dis-turbingnews:The trial takes years to completedue to several years. A judge is rarely responsi-ble for thedelay that occurs.Hecandonothingunder a system that doesnot allowquick com-pletion of cases. The police take up a long timefor carrying out investigations and collectingevidence. That they do not collect clinchingevidence in a case is shown by the fact thatmany cases remain pending for years – forwant of evidence. Why are rapes going on across the country?

Why areminors – even a 5 to 7-year-old child –being assaulted? And several rapes occur inbroad daylight. The rapist thinks he can getawaywith it. It is only a‘rarest of rare’ rapes thatattracts a death sentence. A combined rape isnot a rarest of rare case. A murder, kidnap at-tempt and cases of violence should get deathsentence, but they do not.It looks like the lawmakers do not want to

pass stern laws. Is this because some of themwho are rapists are sitting in our legislatures? There are charges of rape, murder, assaultagainst someof theMPsandMLAs.They seemto be quite certain that they will not be foundguilty.Their trials havebeengoingon for a longwhile. And the law allows MPs to sit in theHouse so long as they are not convicted. When the ‘Nirbhaya’ case was put on fast

track, there was a sigh of relief among people. At last justice would be promptly done. But ittookninemonths for the case tobe completed.Rapeandmurder cases continue for asmany

as 6 to 10 years. There are thousands of suchpending cases inMaharashtra. Justice delayedis justice denied.Andahorrible criminal gets awaywitha light

sentence. A sweeper in the KEM Hospital isafter serving a sentence of few years out now –roaming freely in Delhi. He had sex with anurse in thehospital and to stopher resistance,he used a dog chain and tried to strangle her

with it. The victim is still alive but is totallyparalysed.Thenurses are lovingly looking afterher now.How does one describe the crime of the

man? Is it not one of those rarest of the rarecases? The man should have been hanged. Isnot what he did amonstrous crime? In Mumbai, cases of theft, robbery, house-

breaking, assaults, chain snatching, car theftaremakingheadlines innewspapers. It is beingsaid that Mumbai’s population has zoomed:Lakhs of people do not have homes, no watertodrink; the struggle for survival hasbeenhard.Sheer survival makes people commit crimes. There are people who are so desperate thatthey say while outside jail, they go hungry andspend sleepless nights on footpaths, they can

get at least a couple of hard ‘rotis’ and a roofover their head in jail. And they also know thatpolice are not very keen about collectingproper evidence and making the requiredinvestigations.According to reports, there are more than

two crore pending cases in the country.Whenthis is the case, where is the question of properpunishment arising? It is clear that there is a growing perception

that a crimedoes not get the right kind of pun-ishment in our country. This is a reality whichgets undesirable results:The criminal thinkshecan get awaywithmurder…

AAP has to take on both BJPand Congress

DELHI’S Chief Minister Sheila Dikshitspoke repeatedly about providing infra-

structure – arrangements for providing dou-ble-decker buses on flyovers. And she addedshe would go on making sustained progress.Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal haspromises to get electricity bills cut by 50 percent and also get total control of Delhi police. The BJP leaders have promises to make Delhia safe place for women and active progress on

all fronts.None of them have promises to get onion

prices down. After the election, all the vegetable prices as

well as the cost of many essential consumeritems will remain the same as ever. In fact thepricesmay escalate. What the Delhi folks need most is a reduc-

tion in cost of essential articles. Strong steps bythe government can bring down prices. Stepsagainst hoarding by retailers andmiddlemen, opening of a chain of fair price shops, directprocurement of vegetables from farmers canbring down prices. Why have politicians of allthe parties remained silent on the subject? Why have they not, in their manifesto, prom-ised to address themost serious problem thatis plaguing citizens? What the citizen inDelhiwants is a big cut in

vegetable prices. But party leaders who are on a hectic cam-

paign trail haveno intention at all of giving theaam aadmi the relief he wants. It is cruel that they are talking about such

trivial things like double-decker buses onflyovers. It becomes clear that no party whichmakes

all sorts of electionpromiseswill give theDelhicitizens what they wantmost. What progress has Delhi achieved during

the time the Congress party’s Sheila Dikshitwas inpower? What she claims is that her partyhas achieved progress and that she will con-tinue to keep up progress. And she does notgive any detail of the progress Delhi hasachieved.Winter has come and thousands ofpeople who sleep directly under the sky willshiver in the deadly cold without any clothesto keep themselveswarm. SomegoodNRIwilldistribute some blankets and clear his con-science. The government has no plan to pro-vide the homeless a roof over their heads.Reports will soon appear in newspapers, giv-ing details of deaths due to cold. Will AAP do anything about it? It too has

plans only on paper. And will Sheila Dikshit or Arvind Kejriwal

be able to take measures to protect women? The number of crime cases in Delhihas increased since the terrible ‘Nirbhaya’happening.Whichever party comes to power, there will

beno change for thebetter inDelhi. Politiciansplay a game – it is a tough one to get power. They do not think of the voters: They think ofthemselves. They fight electionswith noholdsbarred. Both the BJP and the Congress are at-tacking theAAP.TheBJPwas silentwhenhomeminister announced a probe into charges thattheAAPwas getting foreign funds.TheBJP andthe Congress have experienced, tough politi-cians. Like a pack of wolves, they may tear tobits the poor, innocent deer – the AAP.

Crime and no punishmentA ‘guru-shishya’ warAGURU has dealt a heavy blow to his

‘shishya’. The ‘shishya’ says he is deeplyhurt. He does not drop the ‘guru’ for hittinghim where it hurts, but says he has implicitfaith in his ‘guru’.A sting operation shows the guru accusing

the ‘shishya’ of corruption, collecting moneyfor favours done. The ‘guru’ further says hisname is being misused by the ‘shishya’ whilehe is carrying out his poll campaign. Finally, the ‘guru’ says the ‘shishya’ is not his enemy –only he does not like him to be in politics –lusting for power. There is a sort of war between ‘guru’ Anna

Hazare and ‘shishya’ Arvind Kejriwal. Why did AnnaHazare bring charges against

Arvind Kejriwal who is desperately carryingout a poll campaign in Delhi? Union HomeMinister Sushilkumar Shinde has ordered aprobe into allegations that the Aam AadmiParty (AAP) is receiving funds from foreignsources. A party which is foreign-fundedattracts disqualification. Kejriwal hasexplained that he has received money fromNRIs living in foreign countries, but they areall Indian citizens with Indian passports.Actually, Kejriwal’s election budget is onlyRs.20 crore, while the Congress and the BJPhave thousands of crores at their disposal.AnnaHazare’s intervention only a few days

before the state assembly elections will tosome extent affect the chances of the AamAdmi Party.Anna could have waited till the elections

were over before making charges againstArvind Kejriwal. Is the ‘guru’ jealous of his ‘shishya’?‘Guru’ Anna Hazare is vegetating in his vil-

lage –with almost nothing to do. He is a spentforce. His second fast in Mumbai was a totalfailure. It is doubtful whether he can attractpeople to his dramatic exercises.Arvind Kejriwal has refuted all charges

made against him by the ‘guru’. He is, how-ever, aware the fact that Anna’s observationsabout funds AAP receives and about themis-use of his name may affect his party’s pollresults. It looks quite certain that ‘guru’ Anna

Hazare is not quite happy about the successhis ‘shishya’ Arvind Kejriwal is having in hispolitical avatar.

“…A temple for Sachin Tendulkar came up onTuesday in a Bihar village with a life-sizedstatue of the cricketer….”

IFELT a terrible sense of sadness as I readthis: A temple being built for aman like youandmewho did extraordinary things becauseof a god given gift! Therein lies our problem:We see the ray of light, and instead of lookingup at the sunwhich sent the beam, instead oflooking farther at a Godwho created the sun,we worship the ray!The ray is just a display, a demonstration of

the great power that sent it.Sachin is the manifestation of a creator

who can equip and install such sportsman-ship in a human being! The message thatcomes through is that this is attainable for allof us!We can all become great in our respective

fields.

We can if we work hard become million-aires, even billionaires. Our focus should be on thanking a creator

who gave usmind, body and spiritual quality

to achieve the near impossible.Butwe believe inworshiping the ray of light

don’t we?It is like a messenger who is sent by a win-

ning general from the battlefield with news ofvictory. When he arrives at the city where hehas been sent to, he is astonished that he islifted on the shoulders of all the citizens, puton a pedestal and even crowned king.“But I didn’t win the battle!”he shouts, “The

general did and is on his way home with his

victorious army!”“Forget the general!” the people shout,

“You are our hero!”Sachin is the messenger who has revealed

what anyone can achieve.Sachin is an example we can follow!Insteadwe build temples to themessenger!I felt a terrible sense of sadness as I read

about this: I realized also that we are so bereftof heroes in this country, where even a socalled ‘good’ man pays a bribe, says his shareof white lies, and bluffs his way through life, that we adulate, amplify andworship anyonewho achieves anything more than the aver-age human being! And then one day news comes that some so

called god we have installed has been foundguilty of something or other. We see the ray oflight grow dim, we find the messenger withfeet of clay and our worship, our adulationcomes crashing down!Instead dear friends, worship the Creator of

the light, the One who made us in His ownimage and thankHim for blessing us with thegift of excellence..!

Well played, Prithvi Shaw

TEENAGE sensation Prithvi Shawdeserves all the possible accoladesfor his brilliant knock of 546 runs, which sounds like a team total in aHarris Shield tournament. This hap-pens to be the highest score by anIndian in all forms ofcricket and is the 3rdhighest in World Cricket.14-Yr-old Prithvi missed the worldrecord by a mere 20 runs which iscurrently held by CJ Eady made atHobart in 1901-02.While the comparison of such tal-

ent with the legendry Sachin Ten-dulkar is inevitable, the mediashould not go over board and put

pressure on the youngster who has alot of path to cover even before get-ting into the Mumbai team. A lot ofyoung talent with similar tall scores& promise has faltered at higher lev-els and one only hopes it doesn’thappen with Prithvi who has a longand brilliant career ahead of him.The Mumbai Cricket Association

should take note of Prithvi’s inningsand the youngster, along with simi-lar talent should be handpicked andgiven extensive coaching under topcoaches and even sent abroad tofine tune their cricket. Sachin Ten-dulkar could also have a word withthe youngster and guide or advisehimon future steps he needs to taketo make it big in cricket.

Pachyderm deathsTHE North Bengal railways passingthrough famous sanctuaries havebecome a deadly predator by run-ning over elephantswhile they crossthe tracks and killing them. It isnoted with huge concern and utteranguish that the railways have cal-lously envisaged the tracks throughthese precious sanctuaries. Statis-tics reveal that between 1974 and2004, 27 elephants perished afterbeing knocked down by freighttrains. Very recently, the wholeworld witnessed a dangerous acci-dent where an elephant carrying a

22-month-old baby died miserablyas parts of her body were founddangling from a railway bridge atJaldhaka. The centre only woke upwhen the international print mediahighlighted this news with graphicpictures showing the scale of thedisaster. As the reports indicate, therailways and the Forest Departmentare both equally responsible forthese unwarranted accidents. It ishigh time that the PMO intervenesand finds out a lasting solution. It isalso alleged that the vacancies ofthe forest Department remain un-filled and thatmotormen do not re-strict their speed to 30-40 km an asthey approach the elephant corri-dors. Stringent regulations to theextent of suspension should be en-sured to save the surviving esti-mated 550 elephants in the region.

Abuse of authorityTHE fact is that unauthorized andmisuse of government machineryfor keeping a watch on private indi-viduals and the public, is an abuseof authority. The operation by twoinvestigative websites shows Gu-jarat HomeMinister Amit Shah ille-gally ordering the surveillance of ayoung woman, based on the in-structions of his boss. The urgentneed of the hour is that NarendraModi has to clarify and explain this

illegal surveillance of the womanand anything else will be indicativeof the double standards of the BJP. Itis high time a sitting SupremeCourtJudgemust be appointed to investi-gate the probe to safeguard the in-terest of women in general andcheck the abuse of authority andunbridled power.

Hapless residentsLOOKING at the plight of the hap-less CampaCola residents, a coupleof stray thoughts happened to crossmymind:Was the BMC justified in provid-

ing civic facilities and collectingtaxes from the owners of the unau-thorized flats? If not, then the affected people

can justifiably seek legal redress bydemanding a full refund of all mu-nicipal taxes paid over the last quar-ter century or so.I can imagine a situation where

an illegal slum was demolished in-stead of a building like CampaCola.I am sure, all politicians would haverushed to the rescue of the residentsand seen to it that the demolition isstopped at any cost. But unfortu-nately, the Campa Cola denizenshappen to be honest tax payers, andhence, are not eligible for the sup-port of the political class.

SCHOOL children need to knowabout Sachin Tendulkar and hiswork in Indian Cricket. TheMaharashtra State EducationBoard has taken the right step bydeciding to include a chapter onthe God of cricket. Tendulkarwas a Master Blaster and made amark in International cricketwhen he was a teenager. Hethen went on to achieve morelaurels and finally the BharatRatna. By releasing postagestamps, a chapter on the legendin school books and conferringthe Bharat Ratna the governmenthas given a much needed boost tothe retired life of the Mumbaibatsman and has also givenstudents a chance to know himand be inspired by his life andachievements.

—C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

MAATujhe Sachin Ka Salaam,Amul Butter Ratna’ reads theAmul hoarding. The magnitude ofa tribute paid to a sportsman likeSachin Tendulkar, proves hiscaliber and human qualities. Aperson who has hung on for 24long years in InternationalCricket, which is almost likegiving his life to the game, hasachieved something that no otheryesteryear Indian Cricketer hasever done. Sachin deserves theadulation and tribute he hasbeen receiving. He has neverbeen embroiled in anyunpleasant controversies andcould have hung on for another5-10 years, but the BCCI babusput such pressure on him toretire, that he had to call ita day.Though he has retired, he will

continue to be an inspiration tothe present and comingyoungsters in cricket. To behonoured with the highest civilian

award the Bharat Ratna is a bigachievement. In fact it looks likethis award was specially createdfor him. There will be no otherSachin Tendulkar to play for 24years and 200 tests with 100international centuries.

—K.V. Raman,Malad

CONGRATULATIONS to SachinTendulkar for winning the highestaward that can be given to acivilian by the government, theBharat Ratna. This is indeed agreat honour. Sachin’s career hasbeen characterised by constantlydelivering and he holds somescintillating records of runsscored. His 24 years in cricket areconspicuous by the absence ofany scandal or tittle-tattle. Heremained focused on his job andalways spoke in measured words, ensuring that was always ‘proper’in public conduct.Above all, he seems to have

followed his late father’s advice ofnot taking short-cuts and nevergiving up, till he reached his goal.As a result, he has achieved

infinite popularity amongst hisIndian fans. What a way to go,

with millions of fans cheering youand shedding tears at yourdeparture from a game! Nosportsman in India has everreceived such love and adulation.Well done Mr. Tendulkar!

—Rajendra K. Aneja, Lower Parel

IT is a matter of joy that theGovernment of India has decidedto confer the Nation’s highestcivilian award – the Bharat Ratnaon our God ofCricket Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. He is the youngest and the firstsportsperson to receive this awardand deserves it for his greatnessfor being a wonderful ambassadorof the game. He has made usproud and put the nation on theglobal arena. He mesmerised theentire Nation with his superbcricketing ability and we cannotimagine cricket without him.He has maintained the same

level of consistency and passionfor the game for over two decadesand will remain a role model forupcoming sports persons ingeneral, and cricketers inparticular.May God shower all his

blessings on him for his futureendeavours.

—Probir Kumar Bose, New Panvel

SACHIN was given a tumultuousfarewell and he deserved it.However, some of the cricketingfraternity thought that HE wasgiven undue importance andother cricketers who retiredrecently were left in the lurch.Sachin received more attentionand laurels than others even inretirement and it is natural thatonly the first is recognised. He hasalso been one of the best based onhis overall game, consistency, behavior and character. He wasan enigma on the field andmadebatting look easy. The boardplayed its part well and ensuredthat there was a smooth transitionwith his retirement. Like they say,all good things must come to anend.

—Jayanthy S.Maniam, Sion

‘JUST as the Congress spent lakhsso that the Mahatma looked as ifhe was living in poverty, manyincluding the media havebleached Sachin’s image. But werethe ethics of Rahul Dravid, VVSLaxman or Kumble any less? Buttake a close look at ‘God’.The Ferrari episode: MichaelSchumacher was supposed tohave presented it to him as a gift. Why a German would give acricketer anything is best leftunasked. But now the story isbeginning to unravel. Sachin hadendorsed his signature version ofthe FIAT Palio. He had to be paid, but that meant taxes. So FIATpurchased a Ferrari and gotSchumacher to gift it to completethe charade. Sachin even got theimport duty waived through amedia onslaught. Then surprise –

Sachin sells his ‘gift’!What aGodly ethical act. Then take the ball tampering

incident. The media nevershowed it in India, perhaps basedon the BCCI’s orders, and BCCIslam dunked everyone to wrap itup as they wanted it. But watchthis link: http://bit.ly/1bnSWRLandmake up your ownmind.Last, the Harbhajan

‘monkeygate’ snafu. Ponting hasquestioned Tendulkar’sstatement. Ponting may have ananti-India image but AdamGilchrist has also done it. Kumblesays – wait for my book. If it wasin favour of Sachin, he could havesaid it long ago. Looks like hewants to tell the truth afterTendulkar retires. But forget allthese people. The God himself hasnot said anything. Why? Becausethe “establishment man” willensure that he does nothing toprevent the goodies from pouringin. Can anyone tell us such storiesabout Dravid, Laxman andKumble?

—T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

IT is a Herculean task to remain intop form and play the game for along period and remainsuccessful in a career spanningalmost 24 years. Sachin did this instyle and his scintillating formwith the bat showed that he is thestar performer. With 51 testcenturies and 49 one daycenturies he was a force in Indiancricket. The way he executed thepedal sweep shot, the delightfulsquare cut and delectable legglance, all made him a completecricketer. Having made a mark asa school cricketer, and developedhis skill as a test cricketer. He is aliving legend of Indian cricket anddoes make an impact with hisimpressive stroke play, impulsiveapproach and inspiring form.Sachin Tendulkar can and shouldbe calledScintillating Sachin Tendulkar.

for Delhi Assembly elections, the relations between Annaand Kejriwal appeared to beunraveling. Against this back-drop, AAP supporters virtu-ally throng Ralegan Siddhiand urge the Gandhian forhis support. Hazare’s Hind

Swaraj Trust office in Ahmed-nagar district was over-crowded yesterday as theupset AAP workers kept onpleading for Anna’s support.SomeAAPworkers inDelhi

have also kept Anna’s officestaff busy with continuousphone calls. These workerswere keen in knowing thereason for his bitterness to-wards Kejriwal. They also in-sisted for Anna’s blessings. However, according tosources, Anna refused tobudge and inch.According to Anna, “It’s

time for people to take overthe reins and enter the politi-

cal arena. People should con-test elections and keep asideall political parties. I am notgoing to support any politicalparty as they are anti-consti-tutional. The Indian constitu-tion makes no mention of

political parties. All the elec-tions since 1952 are illegal. Ihad approached the ElectionCommission to check theconstitutional legality of po-litical parties”.This has underscored the

fact that Anna has bolted thedoor on Kejriwal. It may berecalled that Kejriwal hadsaid that he was Anna’sHanuman, but this Ra-mayana has taken a twist andRam and Hanuman havelocked horns. Therefore theso called ideological chasmbetween Anna and Kejriwalwill continue at least forsome time.

Last VegasAt: Inox and other cinemasDirected by Jon TurteltaubCast: Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Kevin Kline, Morgan Freemanand Mary SteenburgenRating:½

HOLLYWOOD doesn’t have towork too hard to create roles for

their older male stars. They can dojust about anything they did whenthey were younger, and get toromance women half their age. Buteven the biggest screen icon can’tdo anything about aging, nomatterhow hard they work to stave off theravages of time.

Last Vegas is the geriatric versionof The Hangover, its biggest attrac-tion being the four stars MichaelDouglas, Robert De Niro, KevinKline and Morgan Freeman — adream team for director JonTurten-

taub to work with. Audiences willalso be a little more indulgent be-cause it’s these charismatic starsmaking fools of themselves.Michael Douglas plays the rich

bachelor Billy, who proposes to his31-year-old girlfriend because a fu-neral has given him the jitters. He in-vites his best childhood buddies to

the bachelor party in LasVegas, eventhough they haven’t met in years.Archie (Morgan Freeman), recov-

ering from aminor stroke, is feelingsmothered by his son; Paddy(Robert De Niro) is a recent wid-ower wilting with loneliness; Sam(Kevin Kline) is depressed in the oldpeople’s home, even though he hasan understanding wife. It’s feelsgood for them to get away and try torelive the good old days. It’s as predictable as can be, the

underlying note being, old agesucks. The old guys do exactly whatyou’d expect them to do -- drink, dance, flirt, fight, hit onwomen. Fora romantic track, there’s MarySteenburgen— a radiant presence. It would be kind of sad, if it wasn’t

for the stars who can carry off al-most anything with their talent andcharisma. There are as many funnyone-lines as there are cringe-worthymoments, but the overall cheer ex-uded is somewhat likeable. Don’texpect any great insights into theproblems of aging in a countrythat’s not too kind to its senior citi-zens, and it’s entertaining.

His parents find a suit-able bride for him, but Vasudha(Shradda Kapoor) is in love with an-other, and after hearing of Sriram’sbroken romance with Delhi girl Dia(Kareena Kapoor Khan), encour-ages him to run away from the mar-riage mandap.Dia is the ‘NGO type’ who jumps

into everything from anti-corrup-tion rallies to making documen-taries on sex workers to lookingafter AIDS-affected kids and feed-ing stray dogs. When she gets toohuffy about a land deal done bySriram, he ticks her off for being aphoney bleeding heart.Next thing he knows, she has left

for a Gujarat village called Jhumli, with her wardrobe of ethnic cos-tumes, silver jewellery and a life-time supply of kohl, to ostensibly

help the poor villagers build aproper bridge in place of a shakyropeway — the villagers look nei-ther poor nor in need of help. Any-way, Sriram lands up to fetch Diaback, and gets dragged into thebridge battle. The enemy being thecollector (Anupam Kher), whowants to build a chemical factory inJhumli. The film is as shallow as thecharacters accuse each other ofbeing, and worse, it’s boring. ImranKhan has done this role so manytimes, he can breeze through it, socan Kareena, who just has to tonedown her exuberance because sheis playing a serious character — oc-casionally, a what-the-hell expres-sion slips through. Gori Tere PyaarMein is just a silly piece of fluff, no-table only for its song focussing onthe ‘tunh’ or, to say it with Delhi po-liteness, the backside.

FLOOR Space Index incentives areoffered not only to fresh proposalsbut also to the existing proposals.Housing societies of landlords or

occupiers may convert their earlier pro-posals in accordance with the modifiedregulations provided the redevelopmentscheme is in progress and has not beencompleted, i.e. where full occupationcertificate is not granted. However, this additional Floor Space

Index is subject to the submission of alicensed structural engineer’s certificatefor structural stability, to the effect thatthe building is designed to take the addi-tional load for constructing additionalFloorSpace Index, if granted and certify-ing the feasibility for structural modifica-tions i.e. it should be feasible to convertthe tenements earlier proposed with180sq. ft. carpet area into tenements of 225sq. ft. carpet area. The higher FSI does not automatically

becomes permissible in cases whereconstruction is already underway as perold plans, unless a provision wasmade inthe plans, foundation, etc., for subse-quently increasing the area of roomsor the number of floors, withoutendangering the structural stability ofthe buildings. In order to streamline the cumber-

some procedure for granting NOCsfor redevelopment the step of issueof letter of intent prior to issue ofNOC has been completely eliminated bythe government. Now, it is no longer necessary to obtain

a letter of intent. Now, the landlord or co-operative housing societies of landlordor occupiers can directly submit theirproposal for redevelopment of their oldcessed properties in A to G wards ofMumbai as per the prescribed formatattached along with required documentsand information. After the Board receives the complete

proposal with documents, it will scruti-nise it and an NOC for redevelopmentwill be granted after the Board is satisfiedthat all requirements are fulfilled by theapplicant and approval has been given inthe MBRRBmeeting. A scrutiny fee of Rs.5000/- or whatever amount is fixed bythe Board from time to time will becharged for each proposal.Once the documents have been

received along with application and alllegal and technical requirements havebeen completed with, the NOC with beissued within three months. If the NOC holder fails to start the

redevelopment work within 12 monthsfrom the date of issue of NOC, the Boardreserves the right to cancel the NOC.Importantly, the NOC holder is expect-

ed to complete the construction of thenew buildings for the rehabilitation ofold occupiers within 30 months from thedate of issue of NOC.Just in case he fails to do so, extension

to above time limitmay be granted by theBoard, depending on the merits of thecase, on the payment of an extension offee of Rs 5,000 or an amount as decidedby the Board. On granting of the NOC for redevelop-

ment, the NOC holder is bound to carryout repairs to the old cessed buildings athis own risk and cost whenever suchrepairs are deemed to be necessary asdecided by the repair board. For the free sale buildings, Occupation

Certificates will be given only after all theold occupants, including those who maybe staying in the Repair Board’s TransitCamps, have been rehoused in the newlyreconstructed buildings.

TetraVex is a challenging brain teaser. The object of the game is to fillthe grid with the tiles so that the patterns on the adjacent edges ofeach tile match, much like aligning domino tiles. The object of thegame is to place all the tiles in the grid so that the figures on the ad-jacent edges of each tile match. You can place any tile anywhere in

the grid, but you cannot place a tile in the grid if its edges do notmatch all of its neigh-bors. Find a digit that occurs only once on a given puzzle. You know that this digitmust lie along the outer edge of the grid, since there are no other tiles that canmatchit. You can simplify solving by cutting out the nine squares and juggling them in thegrid.

CHENNAI: Five-time title-holderViswanathan Anand’s reign as theworldchampion came to a heart-breaking

end todaywithNorway’sMagnus Carlsen tak-ing the crown after a hard-fought draw in the10th game of theWorld Chess Championshipmatch, which ended here today.Carlsen, who will be 23 years on 30th No-

vember, closed the championship with twogames to spare by taking his tally to required6.5 points out of a possible ten, winning threeand drawing seven games. In what could be marked as the dawn of a

new era in the chess world, Carlsen showedstellar effort yet again by not going for a tamedraw when one was enough for him to takethe title home. Instead, the Norwegian madeAnand suffer for a long and gruelling fourhours and forty five minutes before the In-dian could heave a sigh of relief in what wasthe most one-sided world championshipmatch in modern history.Anand had won the world championship

title five times—2000, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012— but ironically was dethroned in his hometown of Chennai. In a dubious first, this was the only time

that Anand failed to win a single game in aworld championship match.Starting with his journey in 1991, Anand

had always scored at least one victory ineach of the match that he played in the

last 22 years.Carlsen, was in his elements right through

the tenth game gettingwhat hewanted out ofthe opening and then pursuing on hisfavourite mission on grinding out opponent.Anand this time did not collapse and cameupwith some fantastic defense he is known for

to steer the game to a draw.Anand, on expected lines, employed the Si-

cilian defenseand faced theMoscow variationthat Carlsen had employed before. There were no surprises earlier as both

players opted for routine theory and it was aMaroczy bind structure on board after

Carlsen came upwith a check onmove three, parting with his light squared Bishop for aknight. On move 14, Carlsen took back Anand’s

light Bishop to even things up and it wasagain a slow grind thereafter that has beenhallmark of Carlsen’s play in this match.

CHENNAI: Admitting that newly-crowned worldchampion Magnus Carlsen dominated the duel,

five-time title holder Vishwanathan Anand today saidthat the loss in the fifth game of the World ChessChampionship match turned out to be a "headyblow" for him.

Anand's reign as the world champion came to aheart-breaking end today with Norway's MagnusCarlsen taking the crown after a hard-fought draw inthe 10th game of the World Chess Championshipmatch here.

Carlsen, who will be 23 years on 30th November, closed the championship with two games to spare bytaking his tally to required 6.5 points out of apossible 10, winning three and drawing sevengames.

"The fifth game was a heady blow. I had reallyhoped not to be afraid of him in the long games andsimply to try and match him. It was not to be. Afterthat it got worse and worse. Yesterday at least it wasa nice game and today again...I guess when it rains it

pours," a disappointed Anand said at the post-match press conference.

"Its clear that Magnus dominated. At the start ofthe match I thought my chances depended on myability to last long games without making a mistake. This year I have had problems with mistakescreeping in to my play. I tried to pay some attentionto that. But in the end it was in vain because the wayI lost the fifth game is exactly I thought I could notafford to lose. A fine position in the opening andslowly slip and so on," he noted.

Anand might have lost his crown to someone 21years junior to him but the Indian was a picture ofcomposure while admitting that he committedmistakes today also.

"I think today I was just trying to keep playing andat some point started to make mistakes. I made awrong queen move. I simply don't know theevaluation after the match, the knight ending ispretty dangerous," Anand said about the final gamethat ended in a draw.

Aussies on top as Johnson’s four wickets destroys EnglandBRISBANE:Recalledpaceman

Mitchell Johnson returned tohis brutal best today as Aus-

tralia blew away England for just136 to turn the first Ashes Test onits head. Australia, castigated for atop-order failure on day one, roared back to rattle the trophy-holderswith sixwickets for nine inone of their worst Ashes collapses.By stumps on the second day inBrisbane, the home side hadcruised to65without loss, 224 runsin front, with DavidWarner on 45and Chris Rogers not out 15.And it was Johnson, who has

been erratic in his Test career andwas targeted mercilessly by Eng-land's Barmy Army fans in the2010/2011 series, who sparked theturnaround. The left-armer,steaming in andbowling at hostilepace, captured four for 46 off 13overs, taking the wickets ofJonathan Trott, Michael Carberry,

Joe Root andGraeme Swann. The confidence flooded back

into the Australians, coming off a3-0 series loss to England threemonths ago, with RyanHarris tak-ing three wickets, spinner NathanLyondeniedahat-trick andStevenSmith holding three catches. They will now be confident of

extending an unbeaten record atthe Gabba ground which goesback to 1988. Australia are also try-ing to avoid losing four Ashes se-ries in a row for the first time in123years. England, who lost six wick-ets for just nine runs, were left tocontemplate their heaviest col-lapse sinceMelbourne1990,whenthey gave up nine wickets for 47.Their lowest first-innings score

since the 102 against Australia atHeadingley in 2009 came after thekey scalp of Kevin Pietersen trig-gered a clatter of wickets.Pietersen, playing his 100th Test,
