    Overview

    With the increasing popularity and reliance onwireless devices, subscribers expect to havecoverage at any time in any place they may

    be. This requires service providers to increasecapacity, which is typically done by adding newcell sites. However, with city centers becomingmore congested and local government zoningregulations becoming more stringent, obtainingpermits for new wireless cell sites is becomingincreasingly more difficult. Extending serviceto these hard-to-reach areas can be quitechallenging. ADCs LRCS is a cost-effectivesolution for extending or distributing capacityfrom base stations to other areas that requirecoverage.

    ApplicationThe LRCS is the only long-range RF distributionsolution to offer a fully digital platform. By usingpatented technology the LRCS digitizes theentire designated RF band, digitally transportsit over fiber, and reconstructs the signal atfull bandwidth, regardless of modulationtechnology. Digital RF transport allows thesignals to be replicated at full dynamic range,independent of the fiber length, which improvesdata throughput. As advanced, high data ratebroadband services are rolled out, networks witha LRCS backbone will be ready.

    ADCs digital RF transport technologyaccommodates enhancements, such as freespace optical laser links instead of physical fiberconnections for even faster deployment andCWDM capabilities. The CWDM option allows

    multiple transmit and receive paths over a singlefiber cable, potentially reducing annual fiber leasecosts. Free space optical laser links and millimeterwave solutions overcome fiber availability issues.

    The LRCS offers a flexible architecture todistribute wireless capacity. Its versatility and smallsize allow service providers to quickly deploynetworks in areas where zoning restrictions oftenhinder installation of base stations. Centralizationof base station capacity can also be realized usingLRCS. This allows service providers to furtherbenefit by reducing capital expenditures andannual operating costs.

    System Description

    The LRCS transports digitalized RF signals todifficult coverage areas such as congested citycenter locations, tunnels and canyons. Onepoint-to-point RF transport link consists of a HostUnit, Remote Unit, and element managementsoftware.

    The LRCS Host Unit is typically rack mountedat the enhanced base transceiver station (EBTS)site or co-located with other Host Units at acentralized base station radio (BR) suite. The RFsignal is transported digitally over fiber optic cableconnecting the Host Unit to a Remote Unit. TheDigivance LRCS Remote Unit is positioned at thearea requiring coverage and interfaces with an

    antenna to distribute the RF signal. The distancebetween the LRCS Host Unit and Remote Unitis limited mainly by time delay requirementsof system modulation standards (iDEN, GSM,CDMA, W-CDMA, 1xEV-DO, etc.), which istypically several kilometers.

    Host Unit

    The rack-mountable LRCS Host Unit is typicallylocated at an EBTS or a facility building housinga suite of EBTSs. On the forward path, theHost Unit digitizes the designated RF band anddigitally transports it over singlemode fiber to theRemote Unit. On the reverse path, the Host Unitreceives the digitized signal and converts it toRF. The Host Unit also collects alarm information

    from the Remote Unit. For system deployments,multiple links can be networked together at thesame EBTS site. Host Units can be daisy-chainedtogether to allow monitoring and control ofmultiple links from a single user interface.

    Remote alarm monitoring and control of theLRCS system can also be performed from anoff-site location or NOC. Communications tothe NOC can be performed using a PC with astandard physical layer protocol.

    In addition to sending alarm notifications to theEMS through software, the LRCS Host Unit alsofeatures front panel alarm reporting. LEDs on thefront panel of the Host Unit will change colordepending on the status of the unit. LED displaysprovide information regarding the followingitems:

    Power

    System mode (active/standby)

    Indicate faulty unit

    RF conditions

    Furthermore, alarm contact closures providemajor and minor alarms. The Host Unit has twoalarm contacts that either report system operation

    is seriously affected (major alarm) or systemoperation is degraded (minor alarm). The HostUnit operates on DC power.

    Remote Unit

    The LRCS Remote Unit is typically in an outdoorcabinet that is either pole-mounted or mountedon the side of a building. On the forward path,

    the Remote Unit receives the digitized signalsfrom the Host Unit and converts the signalback into RF to be distributed via an externallymounted antenna. On the reverse path, theRemote Unit digitizes the designated RF bandand digitally transports it over singlemode fiberto the Host Unit. In addition to sending alarmnotifications to the EMS software, the LRCSRemote Unit also features front panel alarmreporting. LEDs on the front panel of the RemoteUnit will change color depending on the statusof the unit. LED displays provide informationregarding the following items:

    Power

    System mode (active/standby)

    Indicate faulty unit

    RF conditions

    Power amplifier fault

    Antenna fault system (VSWR)

    Furthermore, alarm contact closures provide afinal level of alarming capability at the RemoteUnit. Major and minor alarms are reportedthrough these contact alarm closures. TheRemote Unit is powered by an AC source.

    Alarm and Management System

    ADC's Digivance EMS provides operationaland maintenance capability for theLRCS. The DigivanceEMS consists of a

    personal computer (PC) using a Windows

    operating system, ADC furnished Java-based software package; an ASCII basedRS-232 capable terminal, and RS-232cables.

    The EMS can simultaneously monitor anetwork of LRCS links by daisy-chainingthe alarm interfaces of up to 24 LRCSHost Units. Each of the Host Unitsare connected through a controllerarea network bus, and the PC can beconnected to any of the Host Units. TheEMS has the ability to download software,

    change parameters, and monitor alarms.

    The EMS provides three levels of alarms:software reporting, LEDs and external contacts.Using a laptop PC, the EMS can also be usedfor field test and troubleshooting at eachRemote Unit. Additionally, off-site functionalityis accomplished through a terminal at the NOCusing a PC with a standard physical layer protocolfor the communications.

    ADC offers a complete EMS hardwareand software turnkey solution to elementmanagement, as well as a software solution,

    where operators utilize their existing elementmanagement network.

    Host Site Capabilities

    The EMS performs the following functions at thehost site:

    Provides real-time information regarding faults

    Displays various system level values (voltages,RF, power, etc.)

    Records and generates history reportswith time and date stamps

    Adjusts performance related parametersof the Host Unit and Remote Unit

    Permits placement of Host Unit andRemote Unit into standby mode

    Allows download of new softwareversions to the Host Unit and RemoteUnits

    Off-Site Capabilities

    The EMS performs the following functions at off-site locations such as the NOC:

    Provides real-time information regarding faults

    Displays various system level values (voltages,RF, power, etc.)

    Adjusts performance-related parameters of theHost Unit and Remote Unit

    Permits placement of Host Unit and RemoteUnit into standby mode

    The EMS provides real-time data to the operatorat the NOC through an ASCII-based, RS-232-capable terminal. The ASCII terminal at the NOCcommunicates to the PC at the host site throughan RS-232 port.

    In addition, the operator has the ability toremotely access the EMS over Ethernet, RS-232 toEthernet connection.
