Greetings from IRMA!
As you all may know, IRMA is a premier institution in the domain of rural management education. Set up in
1979, IRMA has been providing specialized training in rural management through its flagship Post Graduate
Programme in Rural Management (PGDRM). It added another niche programme called the Fellow Programme in
Rural Management or FPRM in 2002 with a view to building scholarship and knowledge in rural management.
FPRM is a unique doctoral-level programme with strong coursework and research components. IRMA lends
support to its scholars in many ways by creating a study setting conducive to learning of the highest kind.
So far, 28 scholars have graduated under FPRM and they have been placed in many leading universities and
management schools. They have also enriched the domain of rural management through their innovative
research and credible publications.
Lately, IRMA has revised its FPRM curriculum based on a review. The Institute has, in a way, re-launched it
afresh with several new features.
I invite you to join this unique academic programme that aims at making a positive difference to the working of
rural development organizations and programmes through knowledge creation that positively impacts the lives
of millions of farmers and rural households.
If you wish to become accomplished scholars and thought leaders in rural management, there is no better place
to start than IRMA!

The Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA)
was established in 1979 at Anand, Gujarat, with
support from the Swiss Agency for Development and
Cooperation (SDC), the Government of India, the
Government of Gujarat, the erstwhile Indian Dairy
Corporation, and the National Dairy Development
Board (NDDB). The objective was to provide
professional education, training, research, and
consultancy support to cooperatives and rural
development organizations of India. Over the years,
IRMA’s clientele and activities diversified to include
other forms of organizations and sectors. In this
process, IRMA brought within its ambit non-
government development organizations, government
d e v e l o p m e n t p r o g ra m m e s , i n t e r n a t i o n a l
development organizations, and funding agencies to
address issues of rural development and
management. IRMA received Rs. 25 crores recently
from the Government of India as a special provision
for a priority educational institution.
IRMA is, today, hailed as a premier institution in the
field of rural management all over the country and
abroad. The National Assessment and Accreditation
Council (NAAC) has accredited IRMA with an “A”
grade. IRMA’s flagship postgraduate programme in
rural management (PRM), too, has obtained an
accreditation from NBA.
IRMA’s Mission
IRMA’s mission is to promote sustainable, eco-
friendly, and equitable socio-economic development
of rural people through professional management.
IRMA strives to achieve its mission through the
following:
• Creating a new breed of professional rural
managers with the appropriate ethos and values.
• Helping rural institutions professionalize their
management skills.
• Empowering rural people through self-sustaining
processes.
• Building new rural management knowledge and
theories through action-oriented and problem-
solving research and consultancy.
• Influencing public policies through policy-oriented
research and consultancy.
While performing these activities, IRMA continues to
uphold and foster the values of creativity, integrity,
and excellence.

1.1 Academic Programmes
Fellow Programme in Rural Management (FPRM) is
for aspirants and professionals seeking careers in
research, teaching, and specialized knowledge based
positions in institutions of higher learning, research,
and development organizations. FPRM is a doctoral-
level programme approved by the All India Council
for Technical Education (AICTE). IRMA is trying to
seek Ph.D equivalence of FPRM from the Association
of Indian Universities (AIU). The programme was
redesigned in 2017 based on the emerging needs of
the rural and development sectors.
Post-Graduate Programme in Rural Management
(PRM) is for those who wish to undertake
challenging managerial responsibilities in the rural
cooperative sector and development organizations.

Association of Indian Universities (AIU). It has also
been approved by the AICTE.
Management Development Programmes is for in-
service managers/professionals working with
cooperatives, NGOs, and government and semi
government organizations engaged in rural

advice for policy and management issues and finally,
for enriching the quality and content of teaching and
training activities of the Institute.

Sustainable Livelihoods (CSL), ii) Centre for Rural
Infrastructure and Corporate Social Responsibility
(CRICSR), iii) Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and

2.0 FELLOW PROGRAMME IN RURAL MANAGEMENT (FPRM)
FPRM is a doctoral/Ph.D level research programme
in Rural Management leading to the title of “Fellow,
Institute of Rural Management, Anand”. It has a
minimum residency requirement of three years.
Participants of the programme get associated with
one basic disciplinary area even though the topic of
research they pursue could have interdisciplinary
perspectives. In order to make it more resilient, the
FPRM curriculum has been recently redesigned
based on the recommendations of a review
committee. The curriculum of 2018 carries many of
the new features recommended.
2.1 Overall Goals
Derived from the Institutional Mission the overall
goals of the programme are to:
(a) Promote scholarship and build knowledge in the
field of Rural Management;
(b) Develop scholars and teachers in Rural
Management;
and
(c) Stimulate academic and research work in IRMA.
2.1.1 Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of the programme are to:
a) Facilitate the development of academic/scholarly
orientation among participants;
b) Provide guidance in identifying research
areas/topics and in the development of research
proposals, conducting research, and thesis
writing;
c) Promote an inter-disciplinary orientation among
the participants;
d) Provide a boost to the scholarship and pedagogy
of the Institute by linking and contributing to the
academic processes;
and
e) Foster a rich academic environment with a
concern strongly aligned with the Institute’s
mission.
2.2 The Structure of the Programme
A strong coursework in rural management education
and research and a doctoral thesis are the two
principal components of the Programme. Annexure 1
provides a schematic picture of the curriculum and
schedule of the Programme.
2.2.1 Coursework Component
The coursework component spread over six terms
with 25.5 credits has been designed to provide a
base for rural management education, research
methodology, organizational exposure, and
developing research proposal for the thesis.
Coursework consists of Classroom Segment,
Organizational Study Segment, and Proposal
Preparation. The Classroom Segment has three
terms consisting of 16.5 credits covering basic,
common, and advanced courses. The Organizational
Segment (IV term) is spread over twelve weeks and
consists of three credits. The proposal preparation is
divided into two parts each carrying three credits.
The first part (V term) covers a review of literature in
the proposed area and the second part (VI Term)
includes preparing a draft proposal. The course
work culminates in a seminar and viva voce followed
by registration of the thesis proposal.
05
2.2.2 Thesis Component:
The remainder of the second year and subsequent
years are devoted to thesis research and writing.
Every participant undertakes thesis research, while a
two or three member Thesis Advisory Committee
(TAC) is assigned to them. The thesis topic is
expected to be in the broad field of rural
management focusing on decision-making and
managerial analysis. Upon completion, the
participant presents a thesis seminar. The thesis
seminar is meant to announce the thesis work to a
wider audience of scholars and researchers and seek
their comments and feedback regarding the thesis
work. At the end of the seminar the participant, in
consultation with the TAC, incorporates changes, if
any, suggested in the seminar and prepares a
defensible draft of the thesis.
A Thesis Evaluation Committee (TEC) is constituted
for every participant. The TEC consists of the FPRM
coordinator, the participant’s Thesis Advisory
Committee, and two experts on the subject area.
The TEC evaluates the thesis and conducts a viva
voce before approving the thesis. The successful
participant becomes eligible for the award of the
title Fellow, Institute of Rural Management, Anand
(Fellow, IRMA).
