When medication or laser therapy fails to reduce the inner-eye pressure often associated with glaucoma, the ophthalmologist may recom-

mend “trabeculectomy” for the treatment of severe glaucoma. Also referred to as “fi ltration surgery,” this procedure involves making a small opening in the “drainage angle,” the point in the eye where the colored part of the eye (iris) and the white covering over the eye (sclera) meet, through which extra fl uid can drain. While this procedure may be performed on an outpa-tient basis, patients must wear an eye dressing during the fi rst night after surgery and an eye shield at bedtime for up to a month. Some patients also experience vision loss, which, in the majority of cases, subsides over time.

P.S. Between 2 and 4 million people in the United States have glaucoma, which can cause blindness by damaging the optic nerve.
