  • PROMISING bitch Tullabung Honey wasthe shining light for NSW in last Saturdaynights semi-finals of the Group 1Rapidvite Peter Mosman Classic, whichwere dominated by Victorian trainerAndrea Dailly and her superstar FernandoBale.

Team Dailly won the opening three semi-finals of the $75,000 to-the-winner PeterMosman courtesy of Fernando Bale, DynaDouble One and Elfen Bale beforeTullabung Honey, trained by Neil Staines atYass, gave the locals something to cheerabout.

A lightly-raced February 13 daughter ofBarcia Bale and Hidden Assets, TullabungHoney took advantage of box one whenleading throughout in 29.91, defeatinganother NSW contender No Donuts by alength to improve her record to six from13.

And while Tulllabung Honey might be a$21 outsider in the TABs Fixed Odds PeterMosman market after drawing box seven,Neil Staines believes a fairytale surprisecould be on the cards.

Were rapt to be there and if theresgoing to be an upset I think we can provideit, Staines said.

This little girl can really hum along.Shes not a 29.40 dog but shes a 29.60 or29.70 bitch if she gets to the front.

Shes got to get to the front to be achance but if she does get to the frontshell find plenty, like she did in her semi-final.

She had box one in her semi but shelikes to use a bit of the track so I thinkshes better drawn this week in seven. Itsjust a matter of whether she can get to thefront.

Fernando Bale is a champion dog and Idont think theres much between him andDyna Double One but I think FernandoBale will need to come out better than hedid last week because theres a bit of pacearound him.

Hes going to miss the start one nightand were hoping its this week!

I think were a good place chance but

theres no pressure on us. Well turn upand let it unfold and anything she does willbe a bonus.

Its very hard to get into a Group 1 raceand its a huge thrill for everyone con-cerned. The owners Robert Hill, who Iwent to school with in Condoblin, andVince and Sue Colubriale are over themoon. Weve run into a really smart fieldbut youve got to be in it to win it andwere just hoping for a lot of luck.

Andrea Daillys Golden Easter Egg andNational Derby hero Fernando Bale, aMarch 13 son of Kelsos Fusileer and ChloeAllen, was chasing his twelfth straight vic-tory when he started at a prohibitive $1.20from box six in the opening Peter Mosmansemi-final.

But for the first time since his last defeat when second to Lamia Bale in a heat ofthe Australian Cup on February 28 Fernando Bale didnt lead on the first turnas he trailed speedy local Rubelly Magicbefore assuming control going through thecatching pen.

Fernando Bale careered away in anotherexplosive display, trouncing litter sisterand kennel mate Kenju Bale by 11 lengths in 29.47, his eighth win from nineappearances at Wentworth Park and fifthstraight sub-29.50 performance at theGlebe circuit.

Dyna Double One, a March 13 son ofBarcia Bale and Crystin Bale, then won thesecond semi-final in 29.54, with FernandoBales litter sister Elfen Bale, winner of theGroup 3 Ladies Bracelet at Wentworth Parkin May, completing the Daillys treble whenclaiming the third semi in 29.86.

Fernando Bale will exit box four for thefirst time in his 25-start career inSaturdays final and the TAB has installedhim at $1.25, with Dyna Double One (8)and No Donuts (1) sharing the second lineof betting at $7.

Boxes dont really matter with FernandoBale. As long as he gets out good and theyleave him alone hell be right, co-trainerGeorge Dailly said.

Minnie Finn told me before his semi-final that he wouldnt lead but it was goodto see him come from behind. You dontwant them to lead all the time becausethey dont know what to do when theydont lead but he did a good job. Hes atrue professional.

At first I didnt think he was as impres-

sive as the week before but then you lookat his time and hes nearly run the same somaybe were expecting a bit much fromhim now.

Dyna Double One has drawn box eightand Tom (brother) reckons hell be suitedout there, although I dont think the pink isever ideal at Wentworth Park. Hopefully hemight get a nice clear run and he did run29.43 at The Meadows the only other timehes drawn box eight.

Theres not a lot between Fernando Baleand Dyna Double One and it would be veryinteresting if Dyna Double One was sittingright behind him going into the back, butthat probably wont be the case.

Elfen Bale got out like a rocket in hersemi-final and were happy shes drawninside Fernando Bale in box three becausewe didnt want her giving him a hard time.Kenju Bale is a good bitch but shes not upto the class of the others.

Improved Camacho Secures Mosman StartImproved Camacho Secures Mosman Start

Lake Macquarie trainer Ron Bell has, like most, conceded victory to theVictorians in Saturday nights Group 1Peter Mosman Classic but he is confi-dent that his underrated sprinterCamacho wont be disgraced chasingthe superstars.

Bell, GRNSWs 2014 NSW Trainer OfThe Year, is no stranger to Group 1 rac-ing.

His bonnie bitch Lorna Moira was afinalist in the 2008 Golden Easter Eggand Paws Of Thunder.

Bell trained National Futurity placeget-ter Cristalle and National Derby finalistSammy Bell.

Camacho has come a long way sincefailing in a Gosford maiden nine monthsago.

The 26 month old son of boomVictorian sire Fabregas has won 13 of his24 starts with prizemoney of $30,000.

Originally considered a short-courser,Camacho won a Peter Mosman heat in30.11 before qualifying for the final witha distant second behind Dyna DoubleOne in a very fast run semi-final.

Bell is ecstatic that Camacho has madea Group 1 Final.

I am rapt in the way Camacho is rac-ing, Bell enthused.

When he started racing he had heapsof pace but was not over strong. Ithought he would just be a 400 metre

    speedster.Camachos second

split over the shortcourses werent greatbut I did kick him offwhen he was eighteenmonths old. The dogreally came good in Aprilwhen beaten a length bySpacecraft in theMaitland Cup Final.

Camacho didnt jumpwell when he won thePeter Mosman heat buthe wore them down.

Look, on facts and fig-ures Camacho cantmatch the Victoriansbut if he comes out cleanhe can go with themdown the back.

His sections indicatehe can be there downthe back straight butfrom thereon FernandoBale and Dyna Double One just burn himoff.

They are powerhouse sprinters, superstars and Fernando Bale could bethe best sprinter ever.

Camacho has pulled up good andalthough a bit tired on Sunday he is fullof life today. I am just happy to have aPeter Mosman finalist, Bell added onMonday.

It could be a special weekend for Bellas kennel favourite Joe Hanley has beennominated for both Unibet Gardensmeetings and if drawn will be having hisone hundredth start.

Bred and owned by Bell himself, JoeHanleys record stands at 29 wins and 33placings for prizemoney of $51,000.

Joe Hanleys win at Unibet Gardens onSaturday was his twentieth on theNewcastle track.

No other greyhound has won 20 racesat Unibet Gardens.

A short course specialist, the brindledog has won two 520s at WentworthPark.

Joe Hanley is rising 4 but he is stillracing well, Bell said.

I have nominated for Unibet Gardensbut it is not easy to get a draw with topgrade sprinters. If he does run I wouldlove him to win his thirtieth race in hisone hundredth start.

It will be special for me if he won. Hehas been a lovely dog to train and he hastried his heart out for nearly threeyears, Bell added.

Last weeks Albion Park Gold Cup finaljust about had it all.

The race was a thriller with the leadchanging on a rarely seen six occasionsduring the course of the 710 metre dis-tance.

Mullaway led to the first turn, then washeaded off by Cosmic Vee Bee towardsmid-race. Hougenie momentarily got thebetter of Cosmic Vee Bee, only to be tack-led and headed by Lady Toy near the finalbend. While all this chopping and changingwas going on, the race favourite Dzekowas looking everywhere for a way throughthe pack.

Entering the final stages Mullaway burstthrough on the inside of a bunched leader-board to hit the front and be hailed thewinner. But in the twinkling of an eyeDzeko unleashed a powerhouse burstwhich carried her to victory down the out-side.

Dzeko started her career with NorthernRivers trainers Glenda and John Dart, win-ning five of her 22 starts up to 600 metres.

She was always going to be a stayer andher future was down south so we sent herto Kel Greenough and Angela Jackson withexcellent results, John Dart said.

Our son Sam obtained his trainerslicense in January this year. Sam and hismate Michael Jordan own Dzeko and Samhas taken over the training for herBrisbane campaign.

John handled Dzeko to the start for lastweeks Gold Cup final.

When they went past the 710 metresboxes after a lap, the bitch was jammed upbetween runners with nowhere to go. Isaw her grab a run that appeared betweena couple of runners, then she got to theoutside to do her stuff.

The daughter of Radley Bale andRematch is only tiny, tipping the scales at25.8 kilograms last Thursday. The winningtime of 42.44 was well outside the stan-dard set most years but the race will beremembered for the little black bitch wear-ing the yellow rug storming home to victo-ry.

In a gross understatement, Tony Brettdescribed the scratching of his two run-ners from the Gold Cup as disappointing.

Tuavasa Shek had box one and Lady Jinxbox two. In straight track gallops at Brettsproperty two days before the Cup, the last

hit-out for the pair, Tuavasa Shek droppeda back muscle and Lady Jinx injured ashoulder.

Tuavasa Shek will be out for three to

five months. I thought I was a chance ofgetting Lady Jinx right by raceday but itjust didnt happen, Brett explained.

Albion Park tonight stages the SuperStayers race over 710 metres.

The event started as a one off back in2006. At that time there were four out-standing staying bitches racing and theBrisbane club invited them for a racecalled the Queen Of The Creek. PaulFelgates Miss Brook won in 41.76, beatingMiss Grub who was trained at the time byKel Greenough, formerly with Glenda andJohn Dart. Boom stayer, the ElaineWilliamson trained Lucys Light, was the$1.30 favourite and finished third. TonyBretts Quidame ran fourth, with just overtwo lengths covering the four bitches atthe finish.

That inaugural stayers challenge createdenormous interest and is now a perma-nent part of the Albion Park winter calen-dar and is no longer restricted to bitches.

There have been some magnificent win-ners. Two years ago Bell Haven fromTasmania led all the way. Last year XyliaAllen gave the leaders a big start and ranthem down.

For tonights $25,900 to-the-winnerevent, the lineup is: box 1 Dzeko, 3 SweetIt Is, 5 Mullaway, 7 Lady Toy. The reservesare Cyndies Magic and Hougenie.

Sweet It Is has never been to AlbionPark, for a race or a trial. Given her recentall conquering New Zealand campaignwhere she carved them up at AucklandsManukau track at sight unseen, lack ofAlbion Park experience shouldnt be aworry.

I just didnt have time to take or sendher to Brisbane for a trial, owner-trainerBraden Finn said.

She didnt travel all that flash over toNew Zealand but handled the flight homea lot better. We will fly up to the GoldCoast on Wednesday, the timing all looks

pretty good.Finn doesnt see box three as an ideal

draw for his superstar.I would have preferred to draw out

wide. Mullaway and Lady Toy like to get tothe fence and could cut across.

Victory tonight would put the prize-money of Sweet It Is up from $877,295 to$903,195. Can she become the first milliondollar earner?

If she stays sound that could happen,Finn says.

It would be lovely to be the first to amillion but if it doesnt happen, I dontreally care. She could come on season inwhich case I would retire her, she has cer-tainly done more than enough on thetrack.

Theres no certainty about how tonightsSuperstayers race will be run. Two yearsago Bell Haven, a noted backmarker, jumped straight to the front and rompedhome by nine lengths.

John Dart suggests that Mullaway mightlead with Lady Toy second followed byeither Dzeko or Sweet It Is.

The night Dzeko beat Sweet It Is atSandown in April, they both made theirruns together and were head and head tothe line. Dzeko won in 41.55. A repeattonight would be nice.

Tonights Superstayers is the final fea-ture staying race at Albion Park for thetime being. Ipswich has its Grand Prix over732 metres coming up on Saturday week.Total prizemoney is $10,450. Sweet It Isand Dzeko racing at Ipswich on a Saturdaynight. Wouldnt that be something spe-cial?

Wag Tail for Christina Harman won theIpswich Grand Prix last year after finishingthird to Xylia Allen and Infinite Wish in theAlbion Park Superstayers.

Elusive Desire Lands Flying Amy Classic

The Colin Graham trained Elusive Desirecame with a whirlwind finish to land lastThursday nights Flying Amy Classic atAlbion Park.

Carrying a first prize of $25,000, all thepre-race hype was around race favouritePop The Cork from the rails alley, with mostbelieving it was just a matter of turning upfor the son of Brett Lee to continue on hiswinning way.

As they say however theres no certainty

in racing, and with Pop The Cork findingplenty of bother, early leader Breathing Fireand second favourite Whata Nice Size madethe running, looking to have the race intheir grasp.

In the end it was Elusive Desire, a son ofNeil Falls former top-liner Cold Fusion whoclaimed the honours, scoring his 11th racewin from just the 27 starts.

    Taxation Parity ArrivesTaxation Parity Arrives

NSW greyhound racing will need to awaitthe findings of the Special Commission OfInquiry, headed by the HonourableMichael McHugh QC, before it receivesany benefit from the taxation reformannounced by the Baird Government ear-lier this week.

The eagerly awaited taxation cuts havelong been seen as NSW greyhound racingsmost realistic opportunity for a muchneeded funding boost, with lobbying forchange to the 99-year Intercode agree-ment, which sees the industry financed at13% while contributing 20%, a seeminglyfutile exercise. Over the next five years, thecurrent tax rate of $3.22 for every $100wagered in NSW will be gradually scaleddown to the $1.28 Victorian model, withthe end result an additional $90 millionper annum channeled across the three rac-ing codes.

To give this some further perspective, infive years time, if the taxation parity isapportioned as per wagering market share,NSW greyhound racings allocation would

be in the vicinity of $18 million annually. Over the next four years, $235 million

will be returned to the racing industry, with the strategic direction of that fundingto be a joint task driven between the con-trolling bodies and NSW Government.

Investment will be made in line witheach codes strategic plan which is devel-oped and agreed to by both governmentand industry, said Deputy Premier andRacing Minister Troy Grant.

The industry is worth $3.3 billion peryear to NSW and employs almost 56.000people we want to secure its future forthe economy and the race going public.

Such an important industry needs to beable to compete on a level playing field, otherwise were sending jobs and invest-ment interstate.

Minster Grant said the money returnedto greyhound racing would be quarantineduntil Commissioner McHugh hands downhis final report into the industry, regardinggovernance, integrity and animal welfareissues, in late September.

The Special Inquiry was commissionedby Minister Grant in March, following thelive baiting scandal which rocked the sportin February after the explosive FourCorners program.

Only last month Greyhound Racing NSWannounced the implementation of its

Welfare And Integrity Fund, directing $1.1million into a raft of new compliance meas-ures.

The fund is bankrolled primarily throughprizemoney reductions to the tune of$830,000.

The thoroughbred industry in New SouthWales has understandably welcomed thetaxation parity with open arms, providingit with the resources to keep pace andpotentially surpass their Victorian counter-parts in regards to prizemoney andgrowth.

With the greyhound industry facing itswatershed moment in time, its equallyimportant NSW greyhound racing canprosper and be an attractive propositionfor current and new participants.Further expansion to the industrys wel-fare arm is a given. Its a must, and mostencouragingly is happening now and willcontinue to do so.

When the time comes, a consideredapproach to the direction of any new fund-ing is a must for a well-rounded industry

that makes a significant contribution toboth the economy and community in gen-eral.

The NSW GBOTA today welcomed theNSW Government announcement thatthe taxation rate applied to racing bets inNSW would be brought into line withVictoria over a period of years.

Currently, the NSW Government takefrom each bet placed with the NSW TAB ismore than double of that which theVictorian Government takes from each betplaced. The NSW Government applies ataxation rate of $3.22 for every $100wagered compared with just $1.28 inVictoria.

The new tax scheme will commence asof January 1, 2016 with the taxation rategradually stepping down over a five yearperiod. Parity with Victoria will occur in2019/20.

During the five year step down, a total of$235m will be returned to the NSW racingindustry while the annual benefit there-after will be approximately $90m per year.

Racing Minister, Troy Grant, has con-firmed that the distribution to the individ-ual codes will be based on the strategicplans of each of the codes.

Any funds available to the greyhoundcode will, however, be quarantined untiloutcomes of the greyhound industrySpecial Commission of Inquiry have beendetermined.

NSW GBOTA Chairman, Geoff Rose, wel-comed the Government announcementand congratulated both the Premier, MikeBaird and the Racing Minister on theircommitment to the three codes.

Clearly, in accepting the case for awagering taxation reduction, the Premierand the Racing Minister have recognisedthe significance of the racing industry con-tribution to the State, said Mr Rose.

Mr Rose added that whilst understand-ing the decision to quarantine the grey-

hound industrys share of the taxationreduction until findings of the SpecialCommission are determined, it remainsimportant for the greyhound industry tocontinue campaigning for a fair and prop-er share of the total benefit.

The NSW greyhound industry employs3,000 people; its annual economic contri-bution to the State is $336m and it hascross subsidised the galloping and harnesscodes for the past 15 years under currentfunding arrangements, said Mr Rose.

Mr. Rose added that it was essential thatthe greyhound industry secured at least amarket share allocation of the funds aris-ing from taxation relief whilst also com-mitting to ongoing reform.

Obviously, we need to provide for ani-mal welfare outcomes that meet andexceed community expectations and weneed undertake strategic facility up-grades whilst also addressing prizemoneyreturns which are now substantially lowerin NSW, on a prizemoney to runner ratiobasis, than both Queensland and Victoria.

Any additional funding, however, mustbe complemented by structural reformwith the collective objective of ensuringthat the NSW greyhound industrybecomes sustainable and viable for partic-ipants whilst continuing to make a sub-stantial value adding contribution to theStates economy.

Mr. Rose added that his Association waslooking forward to working with all stake-holders as funding and strategic reformwas considered in the immediate future.

For its part, the NSW GBOTA is readyingitself for the future by undertaking its ownStrategic Review and was supportive ofthe independent strategic planning inten-tions recently announced by GRNSW,explained Mr. Rose.

  • THE GBOTA Country Challenge series forsprinters and stayers is designed to high-light the best of bush greyhound racingso it would be fitting for the MargaretBannerman trained Shilling Flex to winSaturday's sprint final at Wentworth Park.

Bannerman and husband Sean, who trainon four acres at Reefton, near Temora, drive 150,000km annually in their quest towin races.

They won the 2011 equivalent to thisyear's Country Challenge with Pindari Baleand rate Shilling Flex every bit as good.

Said Margaret: "Ability wise there wouldbe nothing between Pindari Bale andShilling Flex but while I trained PindariBale for Paul Wheeler we own Shilling Flexourselves.

The Bannermans, friends with theworld's most successful owner-breeder forover 20 years, bought Shilling Flex fromWheeler at 16 months for the bargainbasement price of $2500 - less than thecost of rearing and educating a greyhoundto that age.

Margaret Bannerman was almost des-tined to become a greyhound trainer withher grandfather and father being ownersand trainers.

My father Jock Taylor was a truck driverso from the age of eight my duties beforeand after school were exercising his grey-hounds, Margaret recalled.

"I was 12 years old when I began trainingmy first greyhound and although it didn'twin a race I learned a lot through beingaround successful trainers.

The top eight pointscorers followingheats at Bathurst, Temora, Bulli,Wentworth Park, Gunnedah, Maitland,Gosford and Lismore will contest the June20 Challenge sprint and distance finals, each worth $20,000 to-the-winner.

Highest pointscorer in the sprint serieswas veteran Cumberland Black, a risingfive-year-old in the care of 18-year-old JakeWhite.

"My dad Wayne is the official trainer

because Cumberland Black is owned by asyndicate and I don't yet have a publictrainer's licence but I have plenty to dowith the dog, quipped Jake, who lives atGoulburn.

"I took Cumberland Black to Gosford,Bulli, Bathurst, Temora, Gunnedah andWentworth Park to ensure he qualified forthe final and he top scored with a win andfive placings.

"I currently work at Bunnings but mydream is to become a full-time greyhoundtrainer.

Despite being a "bad traveller'' MrCorsair shared top points in the stayers'division with Ritza Ruby.

Mr Corsair was formerly domiciled in theNSW northern rivers region but is nowtrained at Ellalong, near Cessnock, byMichelle Shambler.

Shambler describes Mr Corsair as a oneof a kind character.

When I first got him he wouldn't eatand I discovered his previous trainer hadbeen hand feeding him, Shambler said.

I finally coaxed Mr Corsair into eatingnormally by giving him barbecued chick-ens. But he is still quirky because hedemands total silence in the car on theway to the racetracks.

He doesn't relax in the car but is evenworse if I make any noise or talk to him totry and calm him down.

In fact if I even look at him he goes offhis head, barking non-stop and gettingreally agitated.

Shambler's late father Harley piqued herinterest in greyhounds when he convertedhis then six-year-old daughter's cubbyhouse into a kennel for his dog.

But her focus was on soccer until a badlybroken leg destroyed her dream of becom-ing a professional footballer.

As a teenager I represented NSW andwas on the verge of being selected to playfor the Matildas national team when Ismashed my leg, Shambler said.

"When my leg came out of plaster sixmonths later I could no longer play soccerso became a greyhound trainer.

One of Mr Corsair's toughest opponentsin the stayers' final will be Lachy Balboa, whose trainer Mark Bell underwent a livertransplant last year.

Bell is an established big race specialist,

having trained Go Wild Teddy, winner ofthree group one races in 2000 and MeanBean, who took out the 2001 Group OneNational Derby with Mean Bean.

Lachy Balboa only finished third at hisfirst Wentworth Park 720m test lastMonday night but he eased and lostground going through the catching pen so

should be all the better for that experi-ence, Bell said yesterday.

Greyhounds which have been contest-ing 520m sprints occasionally slow downgoing through the catching pen at theirfirst 720m start because they assume therace is over.

Newcastle Greyhounds are only a week ortwo away from announcing the appoint-ment of a new Chief Executive Officer atUnibet Gardens.

A HR Consultancy Company has inter-viewed applicants and has sent a report tothe Newcastle Greyhounds Board.

The field has been narrowed down and asecond series of interviews will be heldthis week.

Around fifteen applicants were receivedfor the position and there is interstateinterest.

Chairman Brett Lazzarini said onMonday that the applicants were of a highstandard.

We are very happy with the applicantsand we will end up with a well creden-tialed CEO, Lazzarini said.

We cant afford one or two of the stand-

outs but there are very good candidateswithin our range.

The April floods were a disaster for ourClub. We were travelling sweetly with ahealthy bank balance before the floods.

The floods took the surplus and theloss of trial revenue was devastating. Wehave also had insurance issues with thefloods.

On the positive side the track has comeback in great order after the floods andthe trainers are happy.

We have the richest maiden, the LaurieHealion next month and we are lookingforward to that.

The club is receiving plenty of nomina-tions and we have never had to extend.

Sodas Sweet Shepparton SuccessSodas Sweet Shepparton Success

AN afterthought turned into a $25,000windfall for talented Victorian sprinterSoda Lad in the lucrative NorthernDistricts Cup, held at Shepparton lastSunday night.

The Northern Districts Cup hadnt beenon the radar for Soda Lad, trained by Jimand Tanya Auld at nearby Tatura, until thewell-bred April 13 son of Fabregas and PureElle was beaten in a heat of a Ballarat to TheMeadows series.

It was only then the Aulds turned theirattention to the Northern Districts Cup,restricted to Victorian-bred sprinters, withno city wins, less than $25,000 in prize-money and at least two starts atShepparton.

We went to Ballarat with him and if hedmade the final at The Meadows he wouldnthave run in the Northern Districts Cup heatsat Shepparton two nights later, Jim Auldexplained.

But after he was beaten at Ballarat some-one mentioned this race to me so we decid-ed to have a go at it.

Soda Lad had home track advantage inthe Northern Districts Cup, coming into the

series with four wins from six starts overSheppartons 450m course, and he qualifiedfor the $25,000 to-the-winner feature whenrunning third in his heat to Ian Garlandsfastest qualifier Disco Rain (25.16).

Disco Rain, the winner of eight from 11including four from five at Shepparton, started $1.50 favourite in Sundays finalafter drawing the rails, with Soda Lad the$6.70 second elect from box eight.

Disco Rain began well but was quicklyheaded by outsider Miss Suzie Que withSoda Lad moving into second and finishingstrongly to grab Miss Suzie Que in the shad-ows of the post, scoring by three-quartersof a length in 25.32, his seventh win from14 starts.

I thought if the red (Disco Rain) didntlead we had a chance, Jim Auld said.

If the red had led you wouldnt havebeaten it but the seven (Miss Suzie Que)begins well and heads to the fence and Ithought if the seven crossed the red Id bea chance of running it down. That was howit panned out, although he took a lot longerthan I thought he would to get there.

It was great money for a country race especially in our own backyard - and theconditions eliminated a lot of the opposi-tion.

Soda Lad broke in fairly well but then hegot a bit crook and had some time off. Hesbeen going well and I think hell be a nicedog without being a topliner. They might

find him out a bit whenhe gets to top grade.

I think hell be moreof a 500m dog as hegets older. Hes startingto lose a bit of his earlydash and gettingstronger at the end ofhis races, which is theopposite of what hewas when he startedoff.

He ran 29.37 at aSandown Sunday meet-ing early on and welltake him back therenow for a grade 5 onThursday night.

Soda Lads NorthernDistricts Cup victoryprovided the Aulds witha welcome distractionfrom brilliant speedsterHooksys frustratingbattle with injury, which has seen thepotential superstar raceonly twice this year.

I dont know if wellever get Hooksy backagain, Auld lamented.

I took him toSandown four or fiveweeks ago and he trialled 29.30 but then hepulled up lame again after we raced him atBallarat. He originally cracked the scapulabone off his shoulder blade and its a bug-ger of a thing to heal. Hes been to just

about every vet in Australia!Well give him a good break and then

have one last crack at it but hes already losta lot of time and greyhounds dont have alot of time to lose.

Unibet Gardens will host one of the rich-est maiden series in the nation nextmonth.

    Its the annual Laurie Healion MemorialMaiden, a Group 3 event over 515 metres,with a cool $25,000 to-the-winner.

Newcastle Greyhounds have releaseddetails of the Laurie Healion series.

Heats will be run on Saturday, July 18,semi-finals on Friday July 24 and the finalon Friday July 31.

Trainers are advised that greyhounds willneed to performance trial prior to contest-ing heats.

Nominations close on Tuesday July 14 at9.00am.

The Laurie Healion recognises the greatsupport the man afforded the NationalCoursing Association over many years.

Lauries son, Peter, was a long timeDirector of the NCA.

The initial two Laurie Healions were runat Wentworth Park but in 2009 the racewas held for the first time at UnibetGardens and it has been held in Newcastleever since.

The Clare Gordon owned and RobertSmith trained Lochinvar Marlow kicked offhis very successful career in 2009.

The black flash sped over the course in a

sizzling 29.43 and he went onto success in the Group 1 PawsOf Thunder.

Lochinvar Marlow is now asuccessful sire.

Minnie and John Finn landedback-to-back Laurie Healionsin 2010 and 2011.

Minnies brilliant youngsterWinsome Gun went throughthe series undefeated in 2010posting times of 29.58, 29.47and 29.50.

Adelaide owned Flavours, trained by John Finn, was a tenlength winner in 2011 in aquick 29.48.

20/1 chance Trapper Jet,trained by NewcastleGreyhounds vice-chairmanRon Bell, was the trainers firstLaurie Healion finalist in 2012 and hesaluted.

Top bitch Ritza Hattie made her race-track debut in a heat of the Laurie Healionin 2013 and she bolted in clocking 29.41.

Ritza Hattie was most unlucky in the finalwhen runner-up to Kristy Sultanas PremierMozz.

The quality of the nominations in 2014was disappointing.

Surfection was the fastest heat winner in29.69.

There were two semi-finals and the win-ners could only clock 30.01 and 30.31.

    The Bob Glover-trained Lightest Touch

won the final in 29.75.With such a huge first prize it is hoped

that trainers support the Laurie HealionMemorial Maiden in 2015.

There is ample time to trial at UnibetGardens and Newcastle Greyhounds haveput on extra trial sessions as well.

VERSATILE Tasmanian bitch Lillycette islikely to head to the mainland to contin-ue her preparation for the NationalDistance Championship after an impres-sive middle-distance victory at Hobartlast Thursday night.

Lillycette, the former Hobart 599mrecord holder, bounced back after run-ning third as the odds-on favourite in theGreg Fahey Mid Distance Championshipat the same venue at her previous startwhen defeating kennelmate MandyCharm in a fast 34.26.

The April 12 daughter of Velocette andCome Over Nova has made her presencefelt in elite staying company, contestingthe finals of the Group 1 Association Cupand Group 3 Gold Cup at Wentworth Parkearlier in the year.

And master trainer Ted Medhurst ishoping Lillycette will return to Sydney inAugust as Tasmanias representative inthe Group 1 National DistanceChampionship.

Without a doubt, was Medhurstssuccinct response when quizzed ifLillycette will target the NationalDistance series.

The Nationals arent that far away andwell definitely head that way withLillycette because of the quality of theopposition down here.

Shes a ping and run type and shemissed the kick and got galloped on

quite badly when she was beaten in theGreg Fahey Distance Championship butshe went well last night and ran a decenttime.

I might look at taking her over to TheMeadows again in the next couple ofweeks. She knows the place and seemsto go well there so Ill see whats sched-uled and look at either a 600 or 700. Idprobably prefer a 700 because shes abetter chance of leading and the 600start can be deadly.

Medhurst indicated the NationalDistance series is also an option forMandy Charm, a March 13 daughter ofSt. Pierre and Wongawilli Wala, after shefinished second to Lillycette at her mid-dle distance debut.

That was Mandy Charms first 600 andshe did well to only be beaten a couple oflengths after coming from last and cir-cling the field, Medhurst said.

I might look at the National DistanceChampionship with her too. On blood-lines you wouldnt expect her to stay butshes such a talent. Shes got a big motor. She doesnt always show it but when shegoes she can really rocket.

Lillycette and Mandy Charm bothbacked up in a 600m event at Launcestonon Monday night, with Mandy Charm fin-ishing third, while Lillycette disappoint-ed, finishing at the tail of the field.

Allkels Ready To ExcelAllkels Ready To Excel

EXCITING Victorian sprinter Allkel ToExcel will get the chance to emulate hisillustrious brother Paw Licking later thismonth when hes tested in elite companyfor the first time in the Group 2 BendigoCup.

A February 13 son of Elite State andKingsbrae Di, Allkel To Excel is trained byKel Greenough, who also prepared hisGroup 1-winning full brother Paw Licking, which won the 2014 Bendigo Cup lastApril at his final appearance before beingretired to stud.

While Paw Licking is a very tough act tofollow, Allkel To Excel has created a bigimpression in winning 10 of his first 11starts, including a Warrnambool 390mtrack record of 21.69, with eight of his vic-tories being best of meeting performanc-es.

His lone defeat to date came when rundown in a heat of the Group 2 LaunchingPad at Sandown Park at his only startbeyond 500m.

Hes got a reasonable record at themoment but hes still got a bit to do, KelGreenough said.

The Bendigo Cup is on at the end of themonth and that will be his first big test soI suppose well soon find out if hes up to

country cups standard.Speed is his forte. Hes basically a flaw-

less beginner he has been so far anyway and hes got good pace so he puts him-self in his races. At this stage I think 450mis probably perfect for him. Hes a big dogso he likes a big track and a big straightand despite his size he still rails prettywell.

After starting his career in NSW, Allkel ToExcels brother Paw Licking developed intoone of the best sprinters in the land underGreenoughs astute guidance.

The highlight of the March 11 whelpscareer was a record-breaking victory in theGroup 1 Hobart Thousand, while he wasalso a four-time winner at Group 2 level inthe Bendigo, Maitland, Shepparton andTraralgon Cups.

People will want to compare Allkel ToExcel with Paw Licking because its arepeat mating and they do have similarattributes but Paw Licking won at thehighest level so he has the score on theboard, Greenough said.

Id say the main similarity is the hardchase. Obviously its a breed that chasesand both dogs really want to beat theother dogs, which is a great attribute tohave.

The other similarity is that Allkel ToExcel begins like Paw Licking. His first sec-tion is great and his second section is verygood. The run home will be the worry like it was with Paw Licking but we knowwhat weve got.

At his only run over 500 in the heats ofthe Launching Pad he basically collapsedon the home turn but I think he will get ita bit better next time we try him.

I used to talk to Allan Lang (owner)about whether we needed to race PawLicking in the city when the prizemoneyfor the country cups is so good because itused to take so much out of the dog and Ithink well probably have the same issuewith this fellow.

After showing promising early signs inNSW, breeder Charlie Northfield informed

Greenough Allkel To Excel was for sale andhe was purchased by Allen WilliamsBigger Then Life Australia Syndicate.

Charlie Northfield rang me and said hehad a nice young dog for sale because hiswife needed a new car! Greenoughquipped.

Charlie told me what hed trialled atCasino and I nearly bought him myself butAllen (Williams) had asked me to keep aneye out for a dog for him and he decidedto buy him.

Flash Youngster Sets Maiden PaceFlash Youngster Sets Maiden Pace

Central West breeder and trainer DennisBarnes produced another potential starin the heats of the Ladbrokes MaidenSeries (520m) at Wentworth Park onMonday night.

Barnes 22 month old Nangar Flash(Collision x Flash Fancy) ploughedthrough the wet sand and doom andgloom to post a very impressive 29.91.

Nangar Flash was the only one of theheat winners to break 30 seconds.

The black dog on the back of a very fastWentworth Park trial was a $1.30 chancein his heat.

He quickly led and bolted in by ninelengths.

Nangar Flash is a younger brother toBarnes former top sprinters he bred,Smooth Fancy and Swift Fancy.

The youngster has come up with thefour box in Saturday nights $10,000 to-the-winner Ladbrokes.com.au Final andhe is quoted at $1.80 in early markets.

I caught up with Barnes on his Cudalproperty onTuesday.

    He is a verygood pup,B a r n e senthused.

Nangar Flashbroke in welland he has beentrialling quickin the west. Itook him toGoulburn for ap e r f o r m a n c etrial and hewent 25.71, thebest of the day.

    He had neverseen Goulburn.He trialled

much quicker at Wentworth Park than heclocked on Monday. Nangar Flash isowned by the Barnes family and he has abright future.

He doesnt ping but he comes outclean.

We go to Grafton each year for theCarnival and I am going to take NangarFlash.

He will probably have a run or two upthere. This dog has a beautiful nature, adream to train.

His mother Fancy Flash won 13 races

and she was a Wentworth Park winnerand won a race in 30.58 at Richmond in2006.

Flash Fancy was a great producer. Webred six litters from her before shepassed away, Barnes added on Tuesday.

Only bad luck can bring about thedefeat of Nangar Flash on Saturday nightif gets away well.

The final is full of talented youngsters, who look to have very bright futures fortheir connections.

    NEWCASTLE GREYHOUNDS

WUXI staged one of the most exciting andimpressive performances of the winners atlast Friday night's Wentworth Park meetingbut trainer Luke Azzopardi said later thebest is yet to come from this greyhound.

Wuxi (pronounced 'whooshy') is namedafter a village in China and took her recordto win six and eight placings from 23 startswhen she gave front-runner Swan's Mavis amassive start and a head defeat on Friday.

In trials there has never been anythingbetween Wuxi and her litter brother OpusForte, Azzopardi said after Friday's race.

But while Opus Forte has reached topgrade and had won five at Wenty before lastweekend, Wuxi has been slow to mature.Even now she is like a big baby and we won'tsee the best of her until she turns threeyears old late this year.

And while her run from box six tonightwas big, I believe she will clock 29.50around Wenty when she draws box eight.

Wuxi and her brother Opus Forte werebred by Windsor Leagues Club managerChris Carl and his father Dennis, a GBOTAdirector.

They are by Fabregas from Florinda Belle, which is now owned by trainer Justin King.

My father gave Florinda Belle to 'Kingy'after she had this first litter on the provisiothat he would receive a pup from each of

her subsequent litters, Chris Carl said onFriday.

And Remember Irene, who is fromFlorinda Belle's second litter, won for Justinand Dad in the best time of the night atDapto just 24 hours before Wuxi'sWentworth Park race.

Florinda Belle is a litter sister toComplicit, who was a very good sprinter Itrained, and also to Satin Surf, the dam ofSkin Deep, who has won four races for me.

Swan's Mavis, having only her second startfollowing a seasonal spell, was a bold run-ner-up for trainer Dean Swain before beingnailed on the line by Wuxi.

Swan's Mavis posted sizzling splits of 5.38and 13.77 but Swain tipped she would goeven better this preparation.

She was a bit on the sour side after shecame in season but was her old self againthis week, virtually doing cartwheels aroundthe kennels, so I knew she was ready to runa big race, Swain said later.

A downside to Friday night's openingevent was the breakdown of the Ron Bell-trained Exotic Pearl, who dropped a hind legmuscle and failed to complete the course.

Exotic Pearl, who had won four of 24starts before Friday night's race, was in aclear second position when she ripped themuscle going around the first turn.

Wuxi continued her rise through the ranks with a gutsy come from behind win atWentworth Park on Monday night (pic: Craig Youll)

Edwards Right Back In The SpotlightEdwards Right Back In The SpotlightNOWRA Hill trainer Garry Edwardsenjoyed the ride of his life with DoubleTwist, joint NSW Greyhound Of The Yearfor 2013, and looks poised for anotherexciting "trip'' following the win byShady Ace at Wentworth Park last Fridaynight.

Shady Ace, by Collision from Tifi andwhelped in December, 2012, is ayounger half-sister to Double Twist, whowon 26 of 46 starts in 2013 and 2014.

Shady Ace is owned by Wandandian(south coast NSW) breeder GrahamGanderton and his pal Peter White, asuccessful speedboat racer in Victoria.

"They bought Shady Ace as a puppy foraround $7000 and she is the first grey-hound Peter White has raced, GarryEdwards said on Friday.

Shady Ace was beaten narrowly byRue De Kahn in the final of the DaptoOaks on June 4 but even though every-one was telling me what a great run sheput in I was disappointed.

I had honestly expected Shady Ace toclock 29.50 in the Oaks and when shegot up outside Rue De Kahn in the earlystages I thought she would come on andwin.

That might sound silly but I know howmuch ability Shady Ace possesses. Whenshe was a maiden I hand-slipped her

post-to-post at Wentworth Park and sheclocked 24.56 but at her next slip sherecorded 24.12 and I was besieged withclockers wanting to know her name.

"Tonight she was having only her 14thstart because she has had a few injuries.

"She tore a calf muscle, knocked up atoe, and tore a hip support in a racewhen she was 18 lengths in front.

Garry Edwards, who also trained the ill-fated former champion and track recordholder More Space, will next year betraining a couple of Double Twist's off-spring.

"Graham Ganderton bought two ofDouble Twist's first litter of nine whichwere born in January while Shady Ace'slitter sister Twist Me Over, which isowned by Rocco Corsaro, is about toresume racing after a spell.

Twist Me Over, who has won six of 16starts including a double at WP, is a bril-liant beginner but doesn't have the fin-ishing power of Shady Ace.

Last Friday night Shady Ace exited boxfive and bullocked her way between thetwo leaders approaching the first turn tohit the front going through the pen.

She then drew away to win by sixlengths in 29.59, easily fastest time ofthe night, recording sensational runhome figures of 11.62 in the process.

COLLISION Post won only a modest fourthand fifth grade at last Friday night'sWentworth Park meeting but ownerMichael Nicolaou rated it as exciting aswhen his thoroughbred March Magic fin-ished fourth to Sir Dapper in the 1983Golden Slipper.

I didn't back Collision Post so didn't getthe $49 on the TAB but I am so pumped upI can't describe it, a beaming Michael saidafter his consistent front-runner scored awell-earned win in the Ladbrokes VisaStakes.

Collision Post has been knocking on thedoor for a Wentworth Park success andwhile he might have been lucky tonight, a

lot of wins are a bit lucky aren't they? Now 61, Michael Nicolaou emigrated

from Greece as a 20-year-old and quicklybecame a thoroughbred owner.

A floor and wall tiler working in thebuilding industry, Michael enjoyed theglitz and glamour of Sydney thoroughbredracing's biggest day when his two-year-oldMarch Magic contested the Golden Slipper.

Jack Daniels trained March Magic for meand the horse was runner-up to Sir Dapper, the champion two-year-old of the time, ona couple of occasions before finishingfourth to that horse, Been There and LoveA Show in the Golden Slipper, Michaelrecalled.

"But it wasn't long before I swapped theracehorses for greyhounds and I have noregrets.

"The first greyhound I owned andtrained, Curious Eyes, won a race up thestraight at Appin while my second grey-hound, Silent Bandit, which I bought foronly $800, won at Wentworth Park at oddsof 50/1 ($51).

I breed one or two litters each year onthe 10 acre property I share at Box Hillwith my wife Rita, and we have 10 grey-

hounds in work at present.Collision Post was having his 85th start

on Friday night and took his record toseven wins and 29 placings, with his WPtally now standing at two wins and nineplacings fom 36 appearances.

Collision Post's durability is typical ofNicolaou-trained greyhounds, as that dog'sdam Catch The Post won seven of 71 racesfor Michael and Rita, during a career whichspanned January, 2010 until August, 2012.

FIRST Aid Kit is nowhere near the class ofFernando Bale but I'm betting she justmight be smarter.

The Brad Davis-trained bitch is a modernday Houdini, as a video clip, which wouldbe a You Tube sensation, proves.

At Wenty last Friday Brad explained thathe was baffled as to how First Aid Kit, whowon at Wentworth Park in January, wasable to continually free herself secondsafter she was placed on a walkingmachine.

To discover the truth, Brad left his phonecamera in the kennel block and went for awalk.

The video clip shows First Aid Kid cran-ing her head over the front door of thewalking machine, putting her teetharound the latch, then deftly pulling itback to unlock the door.

She then calmly kicks the door open andgoes looking for her trainer. We all knowgreyhounds are smart but that is ridicu-lous!

Katsuro Saharas Victorious RoadKatsuro Saharas Victorious Road

THEY say patience is a virtue and theresabsolutely no doubt its paying dividendsfor the connections of Western Australiansurprise packet Katsuro Sahara.

Bargain buy Katsuro Sahara has won twoof his last three starts at Cannington in fasttime, repaying the faith of trainer MikeJohnston and his fellow owners Peter andDarren Raines, who purchased the son ofOaks Road and Uno Emi for just $3,000.

Johnston, who raced 2008 MelbourneCup winner Surgeon and has only beentraining for 18 months, has taken his timewith Katsuro which means victorious sonin Japanese - Sahara, with the December12 whelp having his first 31 starts atMandurah.

But since venturing to Cannington for thefirst time last month, Katsuro Sahara hasmade his mark, winning three from seven, his most recent victory a 30.33 personalbest last Saturday night, while he also qual-ified for the final of the Group 2 WA Derby.

People are asking us why we didnt bringhim to Cannington earlier he was twoyears and four months old before we wentto the city with him but weve nursed himfor so long to build up to this, part-ownerPeter Raines explained.

His best times are coming now after hes

had 35 to 40 starts because hes been man-aged and his whole career is still in front ofhim.

Peter Raines purchased Katsuro Sahara atfifteen months of age after being drawn tohis kennel name Bundy in an advertise-ment.

I dont mind drinking Bundy so I decidedto enquire about him! Raines laughed.

The person selling him had been in arelationship break-up and was getting outof greyhounds and I remember the dog wasactually sitting on the lounge at the time!

My dad has always wanted to own a dogwith me and I had a feeling he was going tobe alright so we decided to take a chanceon him and pay $3,000. Hes won about$34,000 now so hes turned out to be avery good buy.

After being dismissed as a country grade5 proposition at best by his original train-er, Katsuro Sahara has thrived under MikeJohnstons guidance.

He opened his career with a bang lastAugust, winning his first three starts atMandurah, with last Saturdays slickCannington success his 13th victory from38 starts.

He exploded out of the boxes when hewon his first start at Mandurah but he did aslight injury to a metacarpal and we had tomanage him for his first 17 or 18 starts,Raines said.

He wasnt quite delivering on what hedpromised but then he turned the cornerwhen we stepped him up to 490m for the

first time. He absolutely blitzed them - andpaid $26 too - and from there the rest ishistory.

We wanted to build his strength upbefore we took him to Cannington so weheld him back and at his Cannington debuthe won by six lengths in 30.46. He was 16/1but we werent surprised at all because weknew he had the ability.

Hes only got one speed flat out andhe doesnt leave anything on the track. Healways gives you everything hes got and

you cant ask any more than that.Hes getting stronger and stronger with

each run and its a bit of a shame thatCannington is closing down in a couple ofweeks.

It was very exciting when he made theWA Derby Final. He drew box eight anddidnt have any luck but he chased hisabsolute guts out. We received some sub-stantial offers after he made the Derby butwe knocked them back because hes worthmore than money to us.

Vintage Coin A Winter WonderVintage Coin A Winter Wonder

VETERAN Western Australian marvel OnCoin enhanced his wonderfulCannington record last Saturday nightwhen completing memorable back-to-back victories in the Greyhounds WAWinter Cup.

It was a fitting fourth birthday celebra-tion for On Coin, owned and trained byJohn and Brenda Crossley, as the June 11son of Primo Uno and West On Lee passedthe $250,000 prizemoney milestone withhis 32nd career victory, all of which havebeen over Canningtons 530m course.

Remarkably, it was On Coins thirdappearance in the Winter Cup Final, as heran an unlucky sixth in 2013 before win-ning the event in a fast 30.11 last year.

On Coin had been sidelined by injury forthree months before resuming in late Maywith a first-up 30.72 victory atCannington, his first win since October18.

His next start came in the heats of the$13,500 to-the-winner Winter Cup wherehe finished second to John CarmodysRunkle in 30.57, with the other two heatswon by Paul Stuarts Astronomize in 30.31and Chris Halses All Strung Out in 30.52.

Fastest qualifier Astronomize started$1.80 favourite from box six in the

decider, with On Coin the $4.20 secondelect from box one and BenAbercrombies $6.20 chance Party Hunterthe only other finalist at single figures.

On Coin began well from his rails alleybut was headed by outsider Downlight inthe run to the first turn.

Downlight still led On Coin turning forhome but On Coin hooked to the outsideand finished best to score by 1 lengthsin 30.45.

It was brilliant. Hes been a tremendousdog, a delighted John Crossley said.

When I put him on the dais after therace they asked me what I thought abouthim and I said hes the best! Hesabsolutely incredible.

Hes had a lot of tendon problems buthe keeps coming back. He missed threemonths this time but I was hoping to gethim back in time for the Winter Cup.

I brought him back in a free for all on aWednesday night because theyre not ashard as free for alls on Saturday nightsand he won first-up and then he ran sec-ond in his Winter Cup heat.

I thought he was a good place bet inthe final. He had box one which alwayshelps in big races but I thought PaulStuarts dog (Astronomize) would betough to beat. But he did the job again forus and hes pulled up really well too.

While On Coins Winter Cup defenceclearly demonstrated he retains his zestfor racing, the imminent closure ofCannington (June 27), where the track

specialist hashad all but oneof his 74 starts, has created aquandary forCrossley.

Theres onlytwo weeks leftat Canningtonbefore it closesdown and itll bethree monthsbefore the newtrack opens,C r o s s l e yexplained.

Theyll all godown toMandurah untilthe new trackopens but OnCoin has onlyhad one start atMandurah. Hewas going sowell atCannington thatI never wentback toMandurah with him so Ill trial him atMandurah and see how he goes.

Id say if he breaks down again that willbe it so hes a week to week proposition. But he loves racing so well keep himgoing as long as hes racing well.

But I dont want to go down the grades

not with a good dog like him hedeserves to go out on top.

Crossley only has one other greyhoundin work, On Coins younger half-sister PopCoin (Nitro Burst x West On Lee), while hehas high hopes for two 12-month-oldyoungsters by Spring Gun out of GypsyLee Coin, a litter sister to On Coin.

In principle we accept the direction oftheir recommendations and will continueto work with the government, the industryand its participants, and other stakehold-ers to ensure that the necessary andappropriate changes are implemented tosecure the future of the industry.

Having just received both documents,we are in the process of fully examiningthe reports and will provide a moredetailed response as soon as we can. Thereare clearly many details to be workedthrough in relation to these recommenda-tions, particularly in relation to timing.

It is vital that the entire greyhound rac-ing community accept the need for change
