RADAR-BASED SURVEILLANCE

Secondary Radar based surveillance is currently being used for air traffic surveillance.

The ATC directs the aircraft through the currently congested airspace by sending the information to the controllers and then the controllers send their position by using the transponder.

The time between the signal that is sent and received is approximately 12 sec. Hence it leads to loss in information.

ADS-B TECHNOLOGY

Automatic Dependent Surveillance- Broadcast(ADS-B) can be divided into two parts ADS-B OUT and ADS-B IN.

A flights position is found out using the Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS) and by using the ADS-B transmitters.

The information regarding flights position, velocity is sent to all the nearby aircrafts and the ADS-B ground stations.

This information is sent every second which leads to real time awareness between the pilots. APPLICATIONS OF ADS-BThe applications of ADS-B includes:-

It provides more situational awareness to the pilots to manage the airspace around them.

It can also enhance situation awareness on approach, allowing continued approaches which can ease the air congestion in the airspace.

ADS-B will also help in reducing the air incidents across the world as more information lies in the hands of pilots.

GAGAN

GAGAN is satellite based Indian augmentation and navigation system developed by Airport Authority of India(AAI) and Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO).

It consists of 15 Indian reference systems, 3 Indian navigation land uplink stations, 3 Indian Mission Control centres, 1 Geostationary satellite and 4 GPS satellite.

GAGAN will provide the accurate and reliable position of aircraft covering the area from Australia and South Africa stretching into Middle East.

This will be helpful for landing aircraft in tough weather and terrain like Mangalore and Leh airports.ADS-B WITH GAGAN ADS-B with GAGAN will facilitate the efficient inter-aircraft communication and the flow of data between the base station.

Every aircraft will know their exact location with respect to the other nearby aircrafts in the airspace.

ATC will be helping by giving the weather related data but the pilots will have their liberty to take their own decisions as they will have all the information about nearby airspace

ADS-B with GAGAN will make the airspace more safe and secure.

1966 Charkhi Dadri Mid-Air Collision

The aircraft involved were a Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747-100B en route from New Delhi to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and Kazakhstan Airlines ILyushin II-76 en route from Shymkent Kazakhstan, to New Delhi.

The collision took place at 14,000 feet over the Indian Air space which claimed the lives of 349 people. Both the aircrafts were being guided by the Delhi ATC.

This could have been avoided using ADS-B with GAGAN CONCLUSION ADS-B technology along with GAGAN can be used to transform the airspace by providing more accurate and reliable tracking of flights in and on the ground.Many air incidents such as the 1996 Charkhi Dadri Mid-Air Collision , MH370 and many more could have been avoided if the ADS-B technology is used along with GAGAN. There is an urgent need to shift from the currently used radar based surveillance to satellite based navigation surveillance.As the number of passengers are going to reach two billion by 2015, there is a critical need for practical implementation of ADS-B technology with GAGAN for the protection of these passengers.
