Introduction

Adult Learners Week

Adult Learners’ Week is an international event held in over 55 countries worldwide to celebrate and promote the benefits of adult learning. Adult Learners’ Week began in England in 1992 and was then adopted in South Africa, Jamaica and Australia. In 2013 Adult Learners’ Week is celebrated in over 55 countries worldwide.

In 1999, at UNESCO’s General Conference Adult Learners’ Week, International Adult Learners’ Week was established. Its aim was to bridge the activities during the national adult learners' weeks, to learn from the experiences of other countries, to share the celebration with people in other contexts and to amplify the cooperation between agencies active in the promotion of adult learning at international level.

Scotland celebrated Adult Learners’ Week 2013 by holding adult learning taster events and in Edinburgh 20 events were held in community centres and libraries across the city.

A national awards event is organised by Scotland’s Learning Partnership each year. However, Edinburgh also celebrates local learners’ achievements by holding a citywide Adult Learners’ Week event at the City Chambers on the High Street organised by the Edinburgh Adult Education Group (EAEG).

This year 31 groups were nominated representing the breadth of adult learning opportunities available in Edinburgh and this booklet celebrates each group’s achievements.

Foreward

As a member of the EAEG Group Learners’ awards panel, what I saw in all 31 learners’ groups was pure joy at the opportunity of having had a chance to live their lives more successfully through learning. They were all on the same shared road to greater opportunities and personal satisfaction. Also, the confidence that learning produces as a by-product, improves not only our professional lives, but our personal lives too.The time, effort and dedication that our learners undertake to travel along this road, shines through at the end of the journey. Hopefully, they, like me, will spread the word and give encouragement to others.

I wish current and future learners success.

Councillor Cathy Fullerton

It was my pleasure to be involved in the 2013 Adult Learners Week Group Learners Awards ceremony and in the selection panel who had the difficult task of choosing those groups who received awards on the night. It was a real delight to be able to hear and read about people's experiences and the outcomes that had been achieved by learners. Groups from communities across the city, involving people of all ages and backgrounds, getting involved in adult learning of all shapes and sizes. The stories that people told about what Adult Learning has meant for them were very powerful and captured the essence of why Adult Learning is such an important part of our sense of belonging and community.I am very grateful to the Edinburgh Adult Education Group for all their work and for organising this year’s Group Awards and I very much look forward to doing it all over again in 2014!

Pregnancy Cafe

Outstanding Achievement Award 2013

Achievement Award: Family Category

The Bump Start Pregnancy Café is an NHS

Lothian/ City of Edinburgh Council initiative

for pregnant women and their partners.

Community educators provide antenatal

information in a relaxed setting at Dr Bell’s

Family Centre, Leith and together the group

plan which topics to cover in sessions.

The group offers mums to be a chance to

meet other pregnant women and to share

their experiences and their thoughts on

being a parent. As well as finding out what’s available for parents and babies in their local

area, there’s also the opportunity to make friends and to support each other.

In the two years since the Pregnancy Café began, around fifty parents have attended sessions.

Some have got the learning bug now and ten mums are currently completing ‘Making the

Most of Children’s Development’, an SCQF level 4 qualification.

“I really enjoyed the pregnancy café and learned loads about what’s going on in Leith”

“I never realised that new born babies can recognise their mum’s voice”

Workers’ Educational Association/City of Edinburgh Council Health and Social Care, Workplace Literacies Communication SCQF Level 6 Group

Special Achievement: Award 2013

Achievement Award: Working Life

The Workplace Literacies Communication

group was organised and delivered by the

Workers’ Educational Association with

funding from the STUC Lifelong Learning

Funds. It is supported by City of Edinburgh

Counc i l ’ s Hea l th and Soc ia l Care

Department and Unison. On the course

participants develop skills necessary to

study at an academic level, for example

for an HNC or a degree in Care. Learners are likely to go on to take such a qualification

to support them in their job, and to improve their promotion and career prospects.

Having taken part in other workplace literacies learning with the WEA, individuals

decided to take the next step in their learning journey joining the SCQF level 6 group.

Studying at this level is a huge achievement and demonstrates considerable

commitment from the learners, most of whom returned to learning only recently. For 6 of

the 10 learners, the learning has been a significant challenge. Five learners have dyslexia,

and one is a non-native speaker of English.

“ I have learned to spell better and gained confidence in my ability to learn. I have also taken an interest in reading the Times newspaper. I’ve learned to spell diarrhoea!!!”

“I feel more able to do my job. I have more confidence in writing. I would like to go on and learn more.”

Community Learning and Development Literacies for Employability (CLD L4E)

Achievement Award: Young Adult

Community Learning and Development Literacies for Employability (CLD L4E) started 14 months ago and 172 young people have participated. It provides assessment, guidance, groups, courses and group projects as well as some individual support, and each young person develops a learning plan, building on their own interests.

Many of the young people start literacies learning in integrated engagement programmes in the Activity

Agreement hubs and move on to more focussed learning which can include SQA and Youth Achievement Award accreditation and guidance towards further learning, training, volunteering or employment.

They have worked with others to learn more skills, knowledge and understanding including: communication, teamwork and practical conservation skills, computing and employability. Young people engaging with CLD L4E have written blogs, prepared for the driving theory test and young mums have participated in a film project.

Learners’ achievements have included:contributing to the organisation and promotion of, and taken part in, the Celebrate Learning event at Central Library, which was part of National Dyslexia Week and contributing to Scotland Creates, an exciting new project for young people at the National Museum of Scotland.

‘I’ve learnt not to be scared to try new things.’‘It’s helped me big time to feel more confident about going back to college.’‘I feel different – in a good way – having a variety of choices on what I want to do.’

Cultural Peer Project

Achievement Award: Art and Cultural Education

Drummond Community High School’s Cultural Peer Project is an informal conversation class where native speakers of English and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learn and talk together, sharing their cultures and l a n g u a g e s t h ro u g h a j o i n t l y d e c i d e d programme of activities.

Members of the group share their knowledge and skills with each other. Migrants told the group why they came to live in Scotland and shared their experiences of making this country their home. In turn, group members from the UK were able to share their views of what it means to be Scottish or English.

Not only have group members increased their learning with regards to their English, arts culture, local life and politics and appreciated the wide age range of participants but they also have become friends, opening their homes to each other. The oldest member of the group, Heather Fry celebrated her 80th birthday with friends from the Peer Project.

‘Before I had joined the peer project I have felt isolated from society because I am a housewife and didn’t have many friends in Edinburgh. However, now I can feel I am a part of member of local society. I can’t thank you enough.’

‘I had a good chance to communicate with local people and the people from other countries. Through that communication, I could learn many cultural things and political issues in Edinburgh.’

Glamping on a Budget

Achievement Award: Community Life‘Glamping on a budget’ is a community camping

cooperat i ve , soc ia l en te rp r i se , non -p ro f i t organisation. It is run by young people to help the local community get out of the city for a break including people who are on a tight budget. The

group aim to make camping more affordable and to also help reduce waste and raise environmental issues.

This project is part of the European Social Fund

Literacies for Employability for 16 – 25 year olds in North and East Edinburgh, and was also a part of the Money for Life Challenge 2013. The Glamping team held an event in the Kirkgate Shopping Centre in Leith to promote their tent hire project, which was attended by Mark Lazarowicz, MP for North & Leith. To make the event a

success the team generated local interest by asking local shops to put up their posters, creating flyers and managing a successful social media network . The group have excellent followings on Facebook and Twitter, with many followers showing their support including local agencies, camping related organisations, youth enterprise associations, MPs and media such as STV; they

even received a product sponsorship from ‘Bog in a bag’ which featured on Dragon’s Den!

The Glamping team were responsible for all the market research, budgeting, planning and preparation of resources and marketing materials. As well as acquiring new skills and experience the group developed their literacy and numeracy, communication and ICT skills.

“If we work as a team we can be sort of an inspiration to other young people our age who can feel frustrated in their lives about money and other challenges they face.’

“It was good doing something that was creative and constructive.”

“Doing this has made me realise I want to be a youth worker.”

Goodtrees Project Jewellery and Craft Group

Achievement Award: Personal Life

The Goodtrees Project Jewellery and Craft Group is for learning and physically disabled adults who are often socially isolated. Participants have the opportunity to meet other people, socialise and work as part of a team. Learners choose the types of art, craft and jewellery they want to make on the course. Learners have made jewellery, rice pictures, dream catchers and collages. All these activities have a purpose beyond the craft to, extend the learners’ skills and experiences.

It is a self funding group that uses recycled/ found items to make a variety of crafted objects. Members of the group have a table sale twice a year giving them an opportunity to develop their sales skills and making them feel a valued part of the community.

‘I like making the different things and get a sense of achievement when I have finished. I like meeting people.’‘I like making the pictures and talk about the group all week.’

North Edinburgh Social History Group:“The History of Protest”

The North Edinburgh Social History Group

began two years ago and was set up by activists who wished to re-engage with the community and re-establish community participation and activism. This year the

group decided that they wanted to move from local activism to a study of national activisim and so a group called “The History of Protest” was formed.

The aim of the group is to look at how working class communities in Scotland has protested from the Act of Union to the present day. The group have examined the Enlightenment, Porteous riots, the Clearances and the rise of Nationalism and Labour.

They have examined how protest was done through poetry, painting, song and art.

In the past year the group has achieved a great deal including: teaching students at Edinburgh University, helping organise the North Edinburgh

Fights Back campaign and creating their own videos of their work. The work of the group has also featured in both Edinburgh Evening News and the national media.

“The course has reactivated the feeling that you are part of something”.

“These are things that you should be taught at school”.

“It’s pure, dead brilliant”.

Use your Loaf Breadmaking Group

Achievement Award: Health and Wellbeing

P a r t i c i p a n t s a t P i l t o n Community Health Project decided that they wanted to learn how to bake bread due to rising food costs affecting their families. Every week members leave their group session with the results of their b a k i n g : w h i t e l o a v e s , wholemeal loaves, rolls, deli breads, naans or enough pizza dough to feed their families twice over. The skills learned are passed on to learners’ children either as part of group sessions or at home.

Two members of Use your Loaf have gone on to volunteer in North Edinburgh Arts Centre’s café and others have taught breadmaking in the local nursery. As well as learning new skills and developing others (problem solving, numeracy and literacy), they have greatly increased their confidence and employability. Use your Loaf members also organised the Yummy Food Festival with Lisa Arnott from Pilton Community Health Project and Sarah Low from Forth Community Learning and Development team.

Access to Industry Transition Project

Transition is an Access to Industry project which provides training and employability support for people in recovery from substance misuse. People affected by substance m i s u s e a r e o f t e n l a c k i n g confidence, and skills needed to get back in to education or work. Some people also suffer from complex health needs and their ability to retain information can be affected.

Over 200 people have taken part in the project in the past year and have built their confidence and skills through 1:1 and group support, taking part in courses such as First Aid and Food Hygiene, SQA qualifications and work placements. Some people have gone on to further education and gained employment.

“I was delighted to get a full-time permanent contract at Marks and Spencer. I would not be where I am today without the amazing support I received at Transition.”

The CLD Adult Literacies Book Talk Extra Group

Book Talk Extra is a City of Edinburgh

Council CLD (Community Learning and Development) group for people in the adult literacies programme who want to develop their reading skills.

The group’s achievements include taking on the Edinburgh City Libraries 6 Book Challenge to celebrate “Scottish Book Week” in November 2012. This challenge invites you to pick six reads and record your reading in a diary. The group chose to read “Blood Red Roses” by Lin Anderson and met the

author for a discussion of her work.

“We read ‘Blood Red Roses’ as a group. We took it in turns to read out loud. If I don’t know a word someone else will help me. It’s not always the tutor – it’s another learner. We get more confident as a group.”

The Care for Carers/ WEA Guid for a Laugh Group

There are thousands of carers in

Edinburgh whose lives revolve round the person they are caring for. This can be isolating and stressful. Opportunities for carers to continue their own learning,

pursue personal interests and maintain social contact are often difficult.

For the past 16 years Care for Carers and the Workers’ Educational Association have worked together to deliver a variety of adult education day schools, workshops and classes tailored to suit carers’ interests.

The latest of these has been Guid for a Laugh, which focussed on Scottish comedy writers and their writing. The course provides an opportunity for serious study of a rich vein of Scots language and culture, lifting carers’ spirits, improving their confidence and their health and well being.

“The Scots words were wonderful. Made me learn to laugh again and how good it is for me.”

Chinese Cookery Class

The Chinese Cookery class is part of the City of Edinburgh Counci l ’ s Adult Educat ion programme, which has been running since 1908, and offers a range of classes for people of all ages in a variety of subjects such as cookery, IT, languages, history, exercise and the Arts. The Chinese Cookery Group brings together people of different nationalities living

in Edinburgh. The group learn how to make authentic, healthy Chinese food using ingredients available in the city. Some members of the group have not cooked previously. Learners say participating in the course has boosted their confidence to cook for themselves and others, given them an opportunity to make friends,

helped improve their English language skills and provided an opportunity to learn more about Scottish and Chinese culture, as well as enjoying healthy, inexpensive Chinese food.

The ESOL Beginner Literacies group meet at the Streetwork Crisis Centre in the Old Town. The group regularly attend sessions to improve their English with a focus on housing, getting work and education. Part of their course work includes reading and understanding authentic written Scottish materials, such as job adverts and housing forms. They have also been working towards an SQA ESOL qualification. For some people in the group this is their first formal educational qualification.

Crisis Skylight Edinburgh, Salvation Army and the Pleasance’s Newsletter Group

The Newsletter Group brings together

two voluntary organisations working with adults who have a history of homelessness. The Group produce M o v i n g F o r w a r d , a q u a r t e r l y

newsletter to address issues and events that affect and inspire homeless people.

The group have been developing investigation, interviewing and journalism skills and have put these into practice through a range of

activities including interviewing a local MSP and researching free and accessible activities for homeless people in the city. They have also been learning design skills in order to plan the layout of the newsletter.

Crisis Skylight Edinburgh Oot’N’Aboot Group

Crisis Skylight Edinburgh’s ‘Oot’ n’ Aboot’ group comprises a group of six men and women who are homeless or vulnerably housed.

T h e g r o u p h a v e b e e n discovering the hidden gems of the Old Town. By discovering

and valuing their history, the group have rediscovered their sense of belonging to their community. Recent work has centred on the making of a documentary film called “Oot’n’Aboot” where the learners were either presenting to the camera or working behind the scenes on production. Since joining the group learners are now able to conduct research, use critical skills to evaluate history and improve their own presentation skills.

The Edinburgh Literacies Volunteers

Around 100 people volunteer as assistant tutors with Edinburgh Adult Literacies groups every year. Volunteers make a huge

contribution to the groups they are working with. They support and complement the work of the paid group tutor by providing 1:1 support for individual literacies’ learners in a group setting. This allows learners both

to work at their own pace and on topics of personal interest and enjoy and to get the most out of learning in a group. Volunteers study for the Professional Development Award – Introduction to Tutoring in Adult Literacies Learning (PDA ITALL) which includes time in college and working

with groups.

“I do feel I get something back every time I go into class. It makes me appreciate what I have and the opportunities I’ve been given and the kick I get when I see someone’s understanding grow is fantastic.”

Edinburgh Reads

Edinburgh Reads is a city-wide programme of reading groups organised by Edinburgh City Libraries. Around 500 people take part in groups each month. This makes reading an inclusive and community bu i ld ing exper ience. L ib rary discussions offer readers a chance to ask questions, voice their opinions, while building reading and analytical

skills in a safe environment.

Edinburgh Reads Groups include carers’ groups, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), a nursing mums’ group and a group for the visually impaired.

ESOL Speakeasy 16 - 19 year old learners come together to

improve their English at the ESOL Speakeasy for Young People at the 6VT Youth Café. High schools in Edinburgh have been key referring partners through their EAL service. A referrer praised the project saying, ‘It’s (the students’) favourite time of the week! I t ’s real ly boosted their confidence so much.’

Learning takes place in a relaxed way through games, excursions and keeping a group blog. The group also offers peer-support by sharing experiences of moving to Scotland.

“I think the best things here was, know each other and talk with “

Gallery Tours Modern

Gallery Tours Modern is part of the City of Edinburgh Council’s Adult Educat ion programme. The course is held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

where learners can explore familiar and less well known works with the support of their tutor and curators. Learners find out more about the life stories of the artists and learn about the techniques they used to make to make specific pieces on display in the gallery.

Learners develop their appreciation of all forms of art at the gallery. They are encouraged to share how the art affects them and to discuss the motivation behind the artist’s works.

“Participating in the class has really opened my mind. I have not only been introduced to new artists and movements but come to understand the role of art as social commentary  and the importance of the social context in which the artists were working. So not only have I learned how to look at art more critically but also learned some social history. It is intellectually challenging and has given me a real interest which has had a  impact on my social life. I visit galleries, do my own research and find I can use what I have learned in my voluntary work doing reminiscence with older people.'

History of Scottish Art

The Prentice Centre, a community centre in Granton, runs a vibrant Scottish Studies programme. This year the focus has been on examining how Scotland is seen and sees itself through the visual arts. The course has provided learners with a critical introduction to the development of Scottish visual art from earliest Neolithic terms through to the present day. Course content has included: the representation of Scotland in Europe; the influence of science, technological advances and industrialisation on Scottish art.

The participants have all gained confidence and many have said how proud they are to be able to talk to their friends and family about how important and life enhancing Scottish art is.

“This course has me fair buzzing.”

Life Coaching and Personal Development Course

The Life Coaching and Personal Development course is part of the City o f E d i n b u r g h A d u l t E d u c a t i o n programme. The group meet on Tuesday evenings at Firrhill High School.

Learners have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of various life coaching techniques for their own personal development, in a lively,

shared and supportive environment. Using life coaching skills learners focus on what they want out of life and how to achieve this.

Individual participants have used the skills learned on the course to: find new ways to manage long-term health conditions; declutter their home and secure a promotion at work by tackling interview nerves.

‘Attending the class was a turning point for me, I learnt so much. I speak so highly of the experience, it should be an essential part of the curriculum at school, world would be a different place, a happier positive place.’

Outlook Museums and Galleries Group

Outlook is a City of Edinburgh Council adult education project providing courses for people who access mental health services in Edinburgh. The Outlook Museums and Galleries  group  initially  formed  in  response  to  a  commitment  from  the  City of Edinburgh Council’s Museums and Galleries department  to widen access  to  their venues to people who use mental health services.

The group visited many of the council sites including the City Arts Centre, Lauriston Castle, the Museum of Edinburgh and the Museum of Childhood.  The group then had discussions with curators  to evaluate  their experiences, which culminated in a report for Museums and Galleries staff.

Recommendations from the report were used to inform the redesign of the Museum of Edinburgh and the Museum of Childhood.

As a result of the collaboration with Outlook learners, Museums & Galleries staff are to be offered Mental Health First Aid training to develop their knowledge and understanding of mental health.

Oil Painting

The Oil Painting group meet as

part of the Edinburgh Adult Educat ion programme on Tuesday evenings at Broughton H i g h S c h o o l . L e a r n e r s ’

experiences of creating art varies. Some have a little knowledge of art before starting the course but most have not touched a paintbrush or any art medium since school.

Learners choose and then work on their own personal projects using oils or

branching out into other media such as watercolours or acrylics. For some learners this is the only time each week they have to paint as they do not have the space or privacy at home.

In celebration of the hundredth year of Edinburgh’s adult education service,

an exhibition was held at St.Bride’s Community Centre of artwork from all classes in the curriculum. At this exhibition, a learner from the Oil Painting group was offered £300 for one of his paintings. Another learner used work she had done during the course in the portfolio she submitted to Edinburgh

College of Art, where she is now a student.

Ox-Pen Creative Writers Group

Ox-Pen Creative Writers’ Group

meet weekly at Oxgangs library. Pentlands Community Learning and Development workers and library staff support the group to develop

their skills as writers, promoters and printers.

The group set goals to print their work and in the past twelve months they have created two booklets, “Ox-

Pen – a collection of Short Stories and poems” and “Sirens, Smartphones and Stilettos”, which is a collection of new fiction around a central theme of a busy Edinburgh street in winter.

To publicise their booklets the Ox-Pen writers have organised launch events

in Oxgangs library where they read their work aloud to an audience. The group has also staged an exhibition of their work.

Learners have improved their skills for work and formal education as well as enjoying the creative outlet that their writing provides.

‘The tutor is very knowledgable and helpful and there is no pressure to write anything you don’t feel confident in preparing. I have learnt a great deal from the course about dialogue and painting pictures with words, along with subtle hints and tips on writing styles’.

Prepare for Work and Study at Gate

55 is part of the European Social Fund Literacies for Employability project for 16-25 year olds in the South West and West area of the city.

The aim of this group is to help young people in the local area achieve their goals and develop the skills they feel they need to make progression

o n t h e i r c h o s e n l e a r n i n g o r employment path.

All the members of the group face many different barriers and varied challenges in their everyday lives such as health issues, low income, specific learning difficulties

and negative previous experiences of the education system.

To date, some learners have been involved in various group projects including Scotland Creates: A Sense of Place, a Scotland-wide initiative in which young people choose museum collection pieces and create their own exhibition. A final

exhibition showcasing exhibits chosen by young people around the country will take place at the National Museum of Scotland in 2014. The group are currently involved in completing the City of Edinburgh libraries 6 Book Challenge.

Individuals feel more confident after being part of the Prepare for Work and Study

group and some have progressed on to paid work and college.

‘It’s not like school and there’s no pressure so we can learn at our own pace’.

Scotland on Screen

(Going to the Pictures)

As part of  the Prentice Centre’s Scottish Studies programme, which

this year has focussed on how Scotland is seen and sees itself through the visual arts, Scotland on Screen(Going to the Pictures) was  inspired by the National Library of Scotland’s summer exhibition of  the  same  title. The NLS has fully supported the course and has

provided invaluable advice and resources concerning the content of the course.

Learners have improved their understanding of the social impact of  Scottish  cinema and of  how  Scotland  is  presented  on  film by

participating in discussions and workshops and attending screenings and talks by Andrew Martin, Curator of the Scotland on Screen exhibition.

All of the participants now have a good knowledge of Scottish

cinema and are constructively critical of the image of Scotland and o f h o w S c o t s s e e o u r s e l v e s . Participants have also said that their deeper understanding of Scottish

cinema has enhanced their self worth.

“Seeing Scotland on Screen has made me examine how I think of myself and my country”.

Stitchin Time

Since it opened in 1992 as part of a

regeneration project in Wester Hailes WHALE (Wester Hailes Arts for Leisure and Education) has provided arts a c t i v i t i e s f o r e n j o y m e n t , s k i l l s

development and to support the local community. WHALE’s Stitchin Time is a sewing and textiles group that meets every Tuesday.

Stitchin Time was formed by a group of women coming to terms with personal and health issues. The idea behind the group was to make practical and beautiful items which would help the local community and at the same time Stichin Time members could enjoy the social side of being part of a group.

The group’s commissions have included making cot blankets for the Children and Families Centre and completing a textile mural for the local Libary children’s corner. Members’ confidence has grown as they have used old sewing techniques they thought they had forgotten and developed new skills.

Stitchin Time are also passing on their skills to the local community by running workshops.

“I have skills that I’d forgotten about and I’ve stopped putting myself down”.

Tai Chi

The Tai Chi group at Southside Community Centre is part of the

Edinburgh Adult Education programme. It started in 2012 and the group continue to study 24 form simplified Tai Chi.

Tai Chi improves adult learners’ physical well-being and enhances the function of their central nervous system,

keeping joints flexible.

"This is an excellent class- I have had health problems and found the Tai Chi has improved my health significantly.’

WEA Stitching Times

Stitching Times is a recent addition to the WEA Adult

Education Open Programme which has been running in Edinburgh since 1912 and brings people together from across the city to share learning. The WEA Stitching Times class combines historical investigations

with learning needlework techniques and joint working on a group embroidery project, and is open to all who are keen to learn this craft.

The group’s current project is a historical investigation

into the building where they meet, Riddle’s Court in Edinburgh’s Old Town, which dates from the sixteenth century The group has created a hand embroidered tapestry to be placed above the fireplace in the Orwell Room at Riddle’s Court. The tapestry comprises sixteen individual panels;

each panel telling a different chapter of Riddle’s Court history. The tapestry was presented to City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust during Adult Learners’ Week 2013.

"The 'Stitching Times' has built up my confidence - in myself and what I can achieve".

Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) Playwrights’ Workshop

At the WEA Playwrights’ Workshop participants learn how to write

dialogue  and  create  both  short  scenes  and  longer  play scripts. The

learners write and share their work with the rest of the group; read aloud each others’

work and  join  in  supportive discussions of  scripts by other group members. Learners’

work is workshopped by professional actors and feedback is provided.

Some of the  learners have seen their scripts performed by Citadel Arts Group at the

WEA Lothian Association Centenary as well as in schools and older people’s centres.

‘ I  began  coming  to  the  P laywr ights  Workshop  8  years  ago  and  i t  has  had  a  major  impact  on  my  l i fe.  I  found  myself  in  a  stimulating  and supportive atmosphere. I wrote for a project to take plays into residential homes and not only had the enormous satisfaction of seeing my plays sensitively directed and performed by professional  actors, but was also paid a fee for them. The boost to my  confidence was immense. I felt my creativity had been valued  and given an outlet.’

WEA NHS Bitesize Project; Starting Points

The NHS Lothian Healthy Working Lives Literacy and Numeracy Bitesize Project was established in 2010.

It’s a  partnership  project  with  NHS  Lothian,  UNISON  and  the  WEA providing a range of tailored literacies courses for staff in  low  paid  jobs  who  have  few  or  no  formal qualifications. The project is  supported  by  senior  managers  with  staff  completing the course in work time.

Seven members of staff from the Royal Edinburgh Hospital’s catering and domestic teams initially signed up for a Bitesize Introduction to Computers course as their first step back into learning for some time. Two of the learners are dyslexic and on Bitesize courses they have been able to explore new strategies to develop their writing skills.

The learners then signed up for the SQA accredited Starting Points Communications course which requires individuals to complete four assessed pieces of work on reading, writing, speaking and listening. The learners completed all of the tasks

successfu l ly and now have Communicat ions qualifications at either SCQF level 3 or SCQF level 4.

‘I  signed up  for  the course  so  I could write a  lot better  and (work on) spelling. (We are able) to talk in the group and come to the same answer in different ways.’

All  staff commented on  the difference  the course has  made  in their  confidence,  their  workplace  practices  and  their own  ideas of  themselves as competent and  capable adult learners.
