£21,000 a year!

Page 2: Adult Training & Skills Guide

Welcome to the Bridgwater College Adult Training & Skills Guide 2016/17.As you will see when you look through the Guide, there is a wonderful range of courses available, which may help you to train for your work, to progress your career, to gain a new qualif ication, or to learn new skills and hobbies.

As well as the variety of course subjects, there are also various levels for differing abilities, with different places and ways of delivery, so learning might not necessarily be at the College itself.

If there is something you want to do which isn’t included in this Guide, please contact us to discuss your requirements, as we can often arrange for courses to be run if there is demand – we just need to know about it!

Please also visit our website, as that is where our most up-to-date course information is published, with new courses which didn’t make it in time for this Guide, or which are responding to demand throughout the year.

For further information on any of our courses or training, you can come to our open events, contact our Information and Guidance team, or pop in to the College to speak with us. We look forward to meeting you!

FacilitiesAs well as our main Centre in Bridgwater, we have specialist centres and facilities across the region, providing teaching and training in a variety of courses. We also offer training and assessment in the workplace, so there may be no need to attend the College itself.

Substantial investment has been made to ensure the facilities we provide are of industry-standard with state-

of-the-art equipment, giving you the best opportunities to learn and develop. Many of these facilities are open to the public, giving students valuable work experience in the business, but also benefitting the local community who have access to a range of services and facilities at discounted prices.

As well as these dedicated facilities, the College also

supports learners through its modern IT equipment and huge computer network, its IT Helpdesk, and multi-media services. Traineeships and ApprenticeshipsTraineeshipsTraineeships are short training programmes for young people who want to work in a specific industry and prepare for a future career, or progression to an Apprenticeship.

Traineeships offer young people the chance to see if an Apprenticeship is the route for them, and employers the opportunity to take on an extra pair of hands at little or no cost, for a short period of time, with a view to seeing whether an Apprenticeship could work for their business.

It is also an opportunity for employers to shape young people’s training and experience, which will benefit the business, and provide those young people with skills and attributes which they can put to use in employment.

ApprenticeshipsMore and more young people are looking to Apprenticeships as their career route, and employers are keen to employ apprentices to fill specific skills gaps and adapt to new opportunities and technologies.

An Apprenticeship is a training programme – available at a number of levels, including and beyond Degree level - which operates in the workplace, where employees work alongside experienced staff to gain specific skills, whilst also receiving tuition from a training provider, such as Bridgwater College.

Employability research conducted with 500 companies by ICM Research on behalf of the government, revealed that employers rate apprentices’ skills and experience way above candidates who have followed other career paths.

“I feel proud to have achieved this qualification, especially as I haven’t been in an educational setting in over three decades! I had been delivering leadership to the HR function within my role but was made redundant and decided that this was a good time to get the HR qualification to back up my practical experience. With 30 years’ business experience I feel that I can bring HR and business together at senior management level.”

“After completing my HND in Computing I entered employment at the Met Office, who also supported me in achieving my Degree. While on my course I designed a weather observation system which is now used in countries throughout the world. This was a great experience and as a result, I was awarded Bournemouth University’s Partner College Student Prize.”

Fortunately my employer provided funding to support my learning from which I have benefited massively. My work involves lots of computer aided manufacturing work and Rolls-Royce are investing heavily in automation technology. This course has given me an excellent grounding for future career progression.”

Course Fees The course fees can be viewed on the Bridgwater College website, showing the fees payable depending on age. The fees shown are payable per year if the course duration is for more than one year**. All fees shown apply to people aged 16 or over, who have been resident in the UK or in another country in the EEA for the last three years or more.

For some courses there are additional fees which are payable later or at enrolment and cover extra costs associated with the course, such as materials, trips etc. These will be discussed with you.

If your total fee is £325 or more, including any additional fees, you may choose to pay by instalments – see ‘Spreading the Cost’ on page 25. The full fee or, where applicable, the first instalment, plus a £25 administration fee is payable upon enrolment. You will need to pay this before you can start the course.

Please note that for courses lasting more than one year, the fees shown represent the first year’s fee only. Further fees are payable in subsequent years**.

** Unless marked with a ●. See 19+ Advanced Learner Loans on page 25.
