The Winter Olympics

The summer and winter Olympics alternate, so 2020 will see the summer Olympics in Tokyo, and in

2022, the winter Olympics will be in Beijing. But it hasn’t always been this way.

In 1924, the summer and the first winter Olympic Games were both held in Chamonix. At Chamonix,

the winter games were small, with only 300 athletes and 16 events, including skiing races, ice

skating, and ice hockey. Of the 300 athletes, only thirteen were women. In the 2018 winter games

in PyeongChang, the event grew to 102 events, with around 1,700 men and 1,250 women.

In the first winter Olympics, Norway won the most gold medals, but their most famous sports star,

Sonja Henie, didn’t win anything. In fact, she came eighth out of eight competitors! However, this

was because she was only 11 years old. In the 1928, 1932, and 1936 winter games, she took home

the gold medal.

In 1924, both the winter and summer games were held in France, but from 1928, the two events

Section E: Reading 2 Read the article and the interview in this section and answer the questions that follow

each one. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

The Super Monster

Wolf

Every year, farmers in Japan lose valuable crops because animals, like wild boars, eat them.

Engineers have come up with an interesting solution to this problem. They wanted to make

something that could scare wild animals away, so they created the "Super Monster Wolf".

This solar-powered robot wolf is about 50cm tall and 65cm long. Its head moves from side to

side, it has scary red LED eyes, scary teeth, and even has hair like a wolf. The robot senses

movement up to one kilometer away and can make 48 different wolf howls so wild animals

don’t become accustomed to the noise.

Farmers lose millions of dollars every year because of hungry animals, so is Super Monster

Wolf the answer? Maybe so. The robot is on sale for around ¥500,000 or can be rented

month-by-month. Farmers using the robot have already said it is more effective than an

electric fence.

Unfortunately, real wolves disappeared from Japan in the early 19th century. Maybe, we will

start to see robot wolves replacing them throughout the countryside.

44. Why was the Super Monster Wolf invented?

1. To replace real wolves which no longer exist.

2. To protect farmers’ crops from people who were stealing them.

3. To scare wild animals away from farmland.

4. To make scary sounds and look like a wolf.

45. The robot can make 48 different wolf howls. What is the reason for this?

1. Because it makes the robot more interesting.

2. So the farmer doesn’t get bored.

3. To make the robot more expensive to buy.

4. So animals don’t get used to the sound.

46. Which of the following statements is most likely NOT true?

1. Wild animals cause problems in Japan.

2. Super Monster Wolf walks around the farm looking for wild animals.

3. Farmers have different ways of paying for the robot.

4. The Super Monster Wolf will save farmers money.

A Stress-free Trip to Work A: Today, I’m interviewing Bret Fredericks. Bret

found a new way to get to work. So, Bret. Tell

us how you go to work every day.

B: I used to drive, but now I swim to work every

day.

A: Wow! Why did you change?

B: I was getting tired of feeling hot and frustrated

while waiting in traffic every day.

A: How long does it take you to get to work now?

B: Whether I drive or swim, it takes me about an

hour.

A: What about your work clothes?

B: I put my laptop, phone, and suit in a

waterproof bag and drag it behind me.

A: I bet it’s good for your health.

B: You’re right. It’s great exercise and less stressful. In a car, I would feel stressed. When I

was on my bike, I would yell at cars. When I was on foot, I would yell at cyclists. The

river runs next to the road, so now I can watch other people and feel relaxed.

A: Isn’t swimming in the river dangerous?

B: It can be. I check the water temperature every day to make sure it is safe. It never

snows where I live, but in heavy rain I usually drive.

A: Do you recommend this to other people?

B: Not really. If other people do it, the river will become too crowded! In other cities,

people could try, but you must check. In some cities, it is illegal to swim in rivers.

47. What is interesting about Bret Fredericks?

1. He drives a boat to work.

2. He gets to work by swimming in the sea.

3. He swims along a river to get to his job.

4. He can swim better than his coworkers.

48. Why did Bret start this interesting activity?

1. His drive to work was stressful.

2. He loves exercise.

3. It is very hot where he lives.

4. He doesn’t have a car or a bicycle.

1. is more stressed than he used to be.

2. shouts at cars and bicycles.

3. watches other people swimming.

4. has things he needs for work in a bag.

50. Which of the following statements is true?

1. Anyone can do the same thing as Bret.

2. Bret doesn’t want his co-workers to join him.

3. Bret swims in the river every day.

4. Swimming in a river is always safe.

THIS IS THE END OF THE TEST.
