DESCRIPTION

Rodney Morrison, SL’s VP of Products, and Gopi Parimi, SL’s senior systems engineer for TIBCO, provided a deep-dive demo of RTView Enterprise Monitor for TIBCO, and showed how this latest release of the product enables TIBCO technical teams to: Provide a central, single-pane-of-glass views across all TIBCO middleware as well as other infrastructure components Weigh alerts through assigning criticality, and filter alerts to define those that merit notification Create on-the-fly service definitions, mapping critical applications to both infrastructure and users Use the RTView Historian to understand normal performance of an application and easily identify issues with the underlying TIBCO components before users are affected

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Today I am going to be going over the relationship between SL and TIBCO, the various RTView monitoring product offerings that both companies provide, and a technical overview and deep dive into how RTView Enterprise Monitor is architected and solves complex monitoring issues. Then we will have a live demo of RTView Enterprise Monitor provided by Gopi Parimi a senior systems engineer with strong expertise in TIBCO middleware. Following that we will have a period for answering questions.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In 2002 TIBCO started rebranding and selling TIBCO RTView Standard Monitor. This product was provided with data adapters to Hawk, RV, JMS and EMS Admin. With this product users made very advanced custom monitoring applications that showed the health state of their applications running with TIBCO software. About 5 years ago SL, created turn-key monitoring applications using RTView specifically geared toward technology support teams tasked with supporting TIBCO EMS and TIBCO BusinessWorks. TIBCO rebrands these solutions as TIBCO RTView EMS Monitor and TIBCO RTView BW Monitor.

Presentation Notes
SL sells RTView Classic which is the platform for creation of real-time visualization applications and sells Solution Packages which monitor EMS, BusinessWorks and BusinessEvents. The EMS and BusinessWorks Solution Packages are identical to the products that TIBCO sells. SL has introduced a new product RTView Enterprise Monitor which is an end-to end visibility and control system tailored specifically for technology and application support teams. Users can choose to run just one of these Solution packages if the target user is a TIBCO technology support person responsible for that one TIBCO component, multiple TIBCO Solution Packages if the target users are TIBCO technology support people responsible for multiple TIBCO components, or TIBCO and other technology Solution packages, if the target users are application support teams that need an end to end view.

Presentation Notes
RTView Enterprise Monitor is packaged together with RTView Classic, which allows for deep customization of Enterprise Monitor, including the creation of custom Solution packages. Separately entitled Solution packages are available, covering a variety of different technologies that may be part of your application architecture.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
RTView Classic is used to create custom views for Enterprise Monitor, Custom Solution packages to bring data and events from specific technologies or monitoring tools, and custom alert rule templates. Solution packages come with a wide variety of predefined alert rule templates. Alert rule templates allow one rule definition to apply to many monitored configuration items in EM, like BW Engines, EMS queues, etc. Once an alert rule template is created, end users can configure a global alert threshold to apply to all configuration items as well has overrides for specific items. Those alert templates can be managed from the EM alert administration console to set thresholds, overrides, enable/disable and activation policies dynamically at run-time without requiring rule base updates to the system.

Presentation Notes
Here is a top level view of the RTView Enterprise Monitor architecture. EM gathers information from existing monitoring tools, like Hawk, Tivoli/Netcool, BMC or APM monitoring tools, It also gathers infrastructure host metrics from a variety of sources, and middleware performance metrics from components like application servers, databases, messaging middleware and data caches. It can also gather application performance data which might be instrumented in JMX, WMI, logfiles, or performance databases. It can also optionally input a service dependency model from CMDB information which I will cover later. Those metrics and events are collected with RTView EM Solution packages. And lets take a little deeper dive on how those solution packages gather that data.

Presentation Notes
Solution packages are pre-configured with RTView Classic XML files. These preconfigured files are provided as input to the RTView data server which is a Java process. The data sever then can gather data using any of the RTView data adapters like JMX, SNMP, SQL, or JMS to collect metrics and events. That data is aggregated and transformed by RTView functions and placed in in-memory data caches for high performance access by the alert rule engine and the presentation layer. Alert rule templates for the specific technology are also pre-configured with the solution package as input to the rule engine. The historian is also pre-configured with rules about how to manage the data over time, defining aggregation of data at different time intervals. The historian stores the history of data to a relational database of your choice. SL put a lot of effort in the performance and management of this data set so that commonly used databases rather than a proprietary one could be used. This allows users to instance the database that their organization supports as well as makes it easy for other reporting tools to access the data if wanted. We support Oracle, MySQL, SQLServer, DB2, and Sybase.

SL RTView Enterprise Monitor

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So lets take a little more in depth at the Central Servers of Enterprise Monitor and what functions they perform. Optionally EM can create a dynamic service model so that the health state of individual architecture components can directly be associated with business services. That information can either be manually entered into EM, and this is often done in small <100 host environments. In large organizations, they often have CMDB sources from other IT service management tools and those can be imported into the system. The third option is data driven. This is often of interest to TIBCO users who have best practices about naming conventions for things like BW Engines, or Queues. EM can the use those naming conventions to automatically assign dependencies of these configuration items into the dynamic service model. The Central Alert Servers also do the propagation of alert state and calculations of service criticality to determine service impact. The Central Servers also do Alert aggregation from all triggered alerts captured or triggered by the Solution Packages and optionally do alert enrichment on the data which can be used for a variety of uses, including integration with trouble ticket systems. And finally the Central Servers provide the data directory so that requests for data by the presentation layer can be directed to the data server which contains the detailed metrics.
