Advanced Training in Managing High Conflict Family Negotiations & Mediations Presented by: Bill Eddy, LCSW, Esq. & Michael Lomax, JD November 18-19, 2019 Victoria, British Columbia ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP A two-day training program for legal, mental health, dispute resolution, and other professionals who work with high conflict families. Clients with “high-conflict” personality disorders or traits pose significant challenges for family dispute resolution professionals, particularly in a collaborative dispute resolution process. This 2-day seminar will address understanding high-conflict personality traits, warning signs and how to spot them, how to successfully negotiate and mediate with them using a highly-structured approach, how to avoid malpractice in high-conflict cases, special techniques for managing high-conflict clients, managing risks in divorce cases, dealing with family members and other professionals. If you have taken high conflict training before, this will be a great review, but also you will learn new skills and techniques that will be a valuable addition to your toolkit. In this two-day training program we will: Review Special Techniques for Managing High-Conflict Personalities o Identifying high-conflict clients with the WEB Method® o Calming upset clients with EAR Statements® o Setting limits with the CARS Method® Learn about the latest research into high conflict personality types including treatment and potential for change (or not). Learn about identifying and managing high-conflict leaders in any organization. Use realistic scenarios to learn the techniques for managing negotiations and mediations o Implement a structured negotiation/mediation model o How to handle negotiation hijacks by clients o How to avoid splitting between professionals o Learn about ways of managing meetings with potentially high-conflict people, including setting agendas and enforcing a “Respectful Meeting Policy.” Avoiding Ethical and Legal Actions by High-Conflict Clients o Ethically responding to the disclosure of illegal behaviour o Ethically terminating a high-conflict client o 10 Tips for avoiding lawsuits and administrative hearings Managing risk from Family Members and Other Professionals o Family members and professionals as negative advocates o Communicating with aggressive people with a written BIFF Response® o Managing your own stress in high-conflict situations ABOUT THE PRESENTERS William A. (“Bill”) Eddy is a lawyer, therapist and mediator. He is the co-founder and Training Director of the High Conflict Institute based in San Diego, California. Bill provides training on the subject of high-conflict personalities to lawyers, mediators, judges, mental health professionals and others. He has presented in over 30 states and ten countries. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with 12 years’ experience counseling children, adults, couples and families in psychiatric hospitals and outpatient clinics. For the past 26 years, he has also been a lawyer, representing clients in family court (as a Certified Family Law Specialist) and providing divorce mediation services. He is the author of over a dozen books, including: High Conflict People in Legal Disputes, 2nd Ed.; SPLITTING: Protecting Yourself While Divorcing Someone with Borderline or Narcissistic Personality Disorder; and BIFF: Quick Responses to High Conflict People. Michael Lomax is a mediator and conflict resolution trainer who has assisted many individuals and organizations in dealing with high conflict personalities. Michael practised family law for 22 years and has conducted hundreds of mediations including workplace, family and court related matters. He has designed and delivered many high conflict trainings for lawyers, mediators, government, corporations, military and law enforcement agencies, human resources and union organizations across Canada and the United States. Michael joined the BC Public Service Agency in 2015 as the Conflict Management Lead where he is leading the design and delivery of conflict management services, including coaching, mediation and training to resolve workplace disputes. Michael also served on the Board of Directors for Mediate BC from 2013-2015 and is currently a non-practising member of the Law Society of BC. Michael has been an Associate Speaker/Trainer with the High Conflict Institute for 7 years.
