No, you don’t carry a rope and life buoy. But,

when your unit starts foundering, you become a

“lifesaving commissioner” and you may even help

put together a “lifesaving team.” This class sets

the stage for saving a unit and reviews the basic

unit lifesaving steps. Getting to know your units

will help you identify when and how to address

issues they face in keeping the units strong and

successful. MCS-303/304

COM-312 Top 10 Ways to Ensure Good Commis-

sioner Service

and – for some of us – to get back to the basics.

It summarizes key factors in good commissioner

service. MCS-318

COM-323 Tracking Advancement: Internet and

Scoutbook

Accurately tracking and reporting your unit's ad-

vancement is critical to a successful program.

Internet advancement is now the only way to re-

port individuals' accomplishments. Learn how to

use BSA's internet advancement system and how

Scoutbook can make the process easier and al-

low you to accurately maintain your unit's records.

Scoutbook gives unit leaders, advancement

chairs and parents mobile access to advance-

ment and other records and enables them to track

their Scouts’ progress in real time.

COM-318 Scouting in the LDS Church

COM-317 Helping Units Communicate with

Social Media

The parents of new and potential Scouts, espe-

cially Cub Scouts, are increasingly millennials

who are technologically savvy and avid consum-

ers of social media. Units need to leverage these

resources both for recruiting and for communi-

cating with and retaining Scouting families. Learn

how to improve a unit's Social Media presence

and how to effectively communicate.

COM-321 Contacting Units

Commissioners’ primary role as a friend to the

unit is to help the unit succeed. At the core of unit

service and the most basic task is the unit visit.

This is where the unit can experience the caring

and support that the commissioner offers. Learn

how the concept of commissioner service is

demonstrated in frequent unit contacts, ways to

demonstrate good commissioner service as we

serve as friend, teacher, doctor, counselor,

coach, mentor, and representative of the BSA,

and the importance of using the Commissioner

Tools to record and manage unit contacts. BCS-

COM-322 Good Commissioners Need Both Head

and Heart

ence reflect on some of the important qualities of

good commissioner service (the “head”). The

session also provides a variety of inspirational

anecdotes for them to share with unit adults as

well as other commissioners (the “heart”). MCS-
