    What is a clause?Clause are the building blocks of the sentences. A clauseis a group of words that contains (at least) a subject anda verb.

    There are two kinds of clauses: Independent clause: Contains of a subject and a verband expresses a complete thought. It can stand aloneby itself.

    Dependent clause: begins with subordinator and itneeds an independent clause for it to have acomplete context and for it to make sense.

    What is a Complex Sentence?A complex sentence is made from an independent clause and adependent clause joined together.

    In a complex sentence one idea is generally more important than theother one. The more important idea is placed in the independentclause and the less important idea is placed in the dependent clause.

    Conversely, the independent

    clauses can go first in thesentence, followed by thedependent clause, as in thefollowing:

    I did not see them at thestation because Mary andSamantha arrived at the busstation before noon.

    Joe realized that the train

    was late while he waited atthe train station.

    Tip: When theindependent clause comes

    first, a comma should notbe used to separate thetwo clauses.

    What Is an Adverb Clause?

    An adverb clause is a subordinate clauseused to modify a verb, adjective, or

    adverb in the main clause. Every adverbclause is introduced by a subordinatingconjunction.

    An adverb may be a single word such as quickly, here

    or yesterday, or a phrase such as the day beforeyesterdayor to see my mother. However, adverbs canalso be clauses, containing a subject and a full verb.

    Type Question Answered Example

    Place Where? Wherever there are computers,there is Microsoft software.

    Time When? After the fruit is harvested, it is sold

    at the market.Cause Why? (What caused this?) I didn't call her because I'm shy.

    Purpose Why? (What was the reason fordoing this?)

    She took a computer course sothat she could get a better job.

    Concession Why is this unexpected? Although Jay has a Master'sdegree, he works as a store clerk.

    Condition Under what conditions? If you save your money, you will beable to go to college.

    As you can see from the examples above, most

    adverb clauses can be recognized because they areintroduced by a particular word or phrase (such as"when" and "so that"). These words and phrases arecalled subordinating conjunctions
