Yesterday morning, I let the dog out as usual. She ate a hearty breakfast. An hour later, herhips collapsed.

We'd been expecting that. But not that day. That quickly.

We acquired Shiloh eleven years ago. Apuppy. A collie, Labrador,German shepherdmix. A black-and-tan bundle of energy thatnobody else wanted. Born outside, nursedoutside with the snow still on the ground, shebecame ours to raise after she was weaned.

Born wild, but not to be wild. She had noaffinity for the bush. Olga and I live in thebush, so Shiloh had no option. She toleratedthe bush, for our sake. This great lummoxwas a house dog. Sure, she went outside todo her business – she'd face the fiercestweather – but she clung to her comforts likeglue.

If either of us went outside, she wanted to fol-low. If we went walkabout, she followed. Butto cross the lot line on her own to visit a neigh-bour? Forget it. That was way too much ad-venture . . .

Shiloh would have been a great mother. Themother of all mothers. But we took away thatoption. We had her spayed. But we did not sti-fle her maternal instincts. She mothered allcreatures. Our cats. Other dogs. Chipmunks.Babies. Birds. There was also the odd skunk, but that didn't work out well.

FRESH COFFEEALL DAY

Dear neighbour,

I was in Senegal, Africa this summer to help Samaritan’s Pursedistribute Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. It was an unfor-gettable experience. We were able to hand out 2,759 shoeboxesin 10 days! I learned two important facts while there:

1. There is a shortage of shoeboxes. Senegal received 100,000shoeboxes from Canada this year alone. It broke our hearts tosee some children waiting outside because they knew somethingspecial was happening. There simply are more needy childrenthan there are shoeboxes. Our hope is that these children will re-ceive their gift next year.

2. There are not enough boy shoeboxes being packed. At two dis-tributions, we ran out of boy’s shoeboxes and had to hand theboys a girl’s shoebox. I didn’t hear one complaint. They were justso delighted to receive a gift and many will share with their fam-ilies.

I hope this information encourages you to fill a shoebox for thefirst time this year. If you filled one last year, perhaps you will beencouraged to fill two. There are shoeboxes and pamphlets avail-able at Stedman’s V&S Store. You are also able to drop your giftfilled shoebox at Stedman’s before November 19th or at Gerald-ton Faith Chapel the week of November 13 – 19th. The Churchwill be open Tuesday, November 14th 10:30 a.m. to noon, Friday,November 17th 5:30-7:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 18th 2:00– 4:00 p.m.

Some really neat and practical suggestions for gifts include: sun-glasses, fishing kits, tool kits, jewelry making kits, work gloves, school supplies, soccer ball and pump, skipping ropes and stuffedanimals. Samaritan’s Purse recommends that you include a picture with anote and a return address. One day, you may be blessed with acard and a picture saying “This is the child your family hastouched from across the world. God bless you!” I wait for thatday.

Please call me at 854-1292 if you have any questions.Love, Lana

You'lllearn from them and they'll learn from you, so by the end of the day your head shouldbe buzzing.

A number of young visitors could come to your home with news to pass on and infor-mation to share. You'll probably spend most of your day working around the house oryard, which you enjoy very much.
