THIS SUMMER, THE environs of Mayfair and St James’s will onceagain welcome collectors, museum curators and enthusiasts to LondonArt Week, an annual trail of commercial gallery exhibitions and auction sales. For the fourth year running, paintings, sculpture anddrawings are shown together. There will be a very broad spectrum ofthemed exhibitions and stock shows with objects ranging from antiq-uity to modern times.

This page is concerned with paintings, and we will shall illustrate therange and quality of works to be offered. Richard Green Fine Paintingswill be staging two exhibitions simultaneously: Aspects of BritishImpressionism and Dutch flower pieces 1607–1814. Antonio Joli (1700–77):Views of Italy will be with Lampronti Gallery. These landscapes andcityscapes will highlight the artist’s visits to Naples, Rome and Venice.More fine vedute paintings will be available at the gallery of CharlesBeddington. A large-scale monographic exhibition of portraits byCornelius Johnson (1593–1661) will be at the Weiss Gallery. To cele-brate thirty years of trading, the gallery will show a number of paintingson loan from institutions and private sources. Christie’s will be sellingLot and his daughters, by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) at the eveningsale on 7th July. An important work of Rubens’s early maturity, thispainting has remained hidden from public view for over a century.Selected Dutch paintings from the 17th century will be on offer withJohnny van Haeften including the vibrant still-life illustrated here andalso a masterly flower painting: A Still-life of Tulips and other Flowers in aCeramic Vase by Balthasar ven der Ast (1593–1657).

COLLECTORS AND AFICIONADOS of works on paper will discover awide-ranging selection at the Summer gallery shows and auctions inJuly. Most of the dealers taking part in London Art Week will be stagingstock exhibitions, but a few will present themed exhibitions includingTraveller-artists in the Far East at the gallery of Martyn Gregory. Thegallery specialises in ‘China Trade’ paintings and drawings from the period 1700-1950. This exhibition will offer works on paper byEuropean artists who travelled to India, China and the Far East includingWilliam Alexander (1767–1816) and George Chinnery (1774–1852). Aninteresting mix of European and English watercolours and drawingsfrom this period will also be available with James Mackinnon. Drawinginspiration: Sketches and sketchbook pages from 19th and 20th century will bestaged at the gallery of Stephen Ongpin Fine Art. Highlights will includesheets by Odilon Redon (1840-1916), Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920)and Paul Cézanne (1839–1906). Baigneuses, a particularly vibrant water-colour from 1906 by André Derain (1880–1954) will be for sale withStoppenbach and Delestre.

Continental old-master drawings will include a selection from visitingdealer Maurizio Nobile (Bologna and Paris). On offer will be a groupof rediscovered drawings by Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652–1725),sculptor and architect to the court of Cosimo III de’ Medici. MoreEuropean old-master drawings will be available with other dealersincluding Didier Aaron Ltd, Florian Härb, Martin Grässle and CrispianRiley-Smith Fine Arts Ltd.

THEMED EXHIBITIONS ARRANGED by the sculpture dealers dur-ing London Art Week are always important for collectors and enthu-siasts. This year Tomasso Brothers Fine Art will be showing works ina display entitled Antique inspiration. Apollo and the Graces, an ItalianNeo-classical relief from the nineteenth century carved from whitemarble will be a highlight. In a similar vein, Lullo Pampoulides, a newfirm, will be staging Classicism reimagined: Master paintings and sculptures1700–circa 1900. Early stained-glass specialist Sam Fogg will be stagingGilded Light: 16th-century stained-glass roundels from the collection of SirThomas Neave and other private collections. A new participant to London Art Week will be ArcadiaCerri Fine Art, and of interest for collectors of medieval sculpture willbe Head of a frowning man, created in the Champagne region of France(c.1275–1300). The Daniel Katz Gallery is staging a themed exhibitionentitled Of Gods and men. The exhibition will explore the characteris-tics sculptors used to portray deities shown together with portraits ofmortal men.

The arts of ancient Greece and Rome are a feature of London ArtWeek, and visitors will find a vast range of objects spanning many cen-turies at Rupert Wace Fine Art. The archaic bronze Greek griffin pro-tome from the mid-7th century BC. will be a highlight. Greekantiquities will also be shown by Kallos Gallery. Their exhibition,Horses, rulers and victory in the art of ancient Greek coinage will include agold Drachma from Syracuse, Sicily, c.317–310 BC.
