Engineering programs at CSU-Pueblo

1. BSIE program. The BS in Industrial Engineering prepares graduates to design and improve systems. Industrial engineers are employed by a variety of companies; job prospects are very good. Students who intend to obtain the BSIE should list Industrial Engineering as their major. The degree requires a minimum of 126 credit hours.

2. BSE program. The BS in Engineering with Mechatronics specialization prepares graduates to combine mechanical and electrical engineering knowledge with computer controls to create devices that make our lives better. The BS in Engineering with specialization in mechatronics is a flexible, broad degree that prepares graduates to work in many industries; job prospects are very good. The degree requires a minimum of 129 credit hours.

3. MSISE and MSE programs. The Master's degree program in Industrial and Systems Engineering uses techniques from engineering disciplines, mathematics, behavioral and physical sciences to analyze and design large scale human/machine/software systems for commercial, governmental and non-profit organizations. Students who intend to obtain the MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering should see Professor Bedoya for advice. The Master’s degree in Engineering has emphasis areas in Mechatronics and Railroad Engineering. Students who intend to obtain the MS in Engineering should see Professor Jaksic for advice.

4. Minors. The Department offers a Minor in Industrial Engineering (21-25 credit hours) and a Minor in Engineering (24 credit hours). Each minor also requires prerequisite courses in math and physics.

5. Certificates. The Department offers the Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate and the Lean Green Belt Certificate.

6. Transfer program. Students who wish to pursue any undergraduate engineering degree other than the BS in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) or the BS in Engineering with Mechatronics specialization (BSE) must transfer to somewhere other than CSU-Pueblo to complete the degree. Students who intend to transfer should list Pre-Engineering as their major. The first two years of engineering at CSU-Pueblo are similar to the first two years of engineering at other engineering universities. Professor Fraser can help you select courses that are most likely to transfer successfully. General guidelines for transfer students are on page 3.

We welcome transfer students from community colleges and other colleges and universities. Students can complete much of the first two years of the BSIE or the BSE at another institution and then transfer to CSU-Pueblo to complete either of these degrees.

If you would like an engineering degree, but want to stay at CSU-Pueblo, the BS in Industrial Engineering and the BS in Engineering with Mechatronics specialization are the only engineering degrees we offer. However, other special programs may allow you to pursue your interests here. For example, the Chemistry major has an Engineering Option.

If you intend to transfer elsewhere and then decide to stay at CSU-Pueblo, you will be able to count all of the above courses toward the BSE or the BSIE.

Prerequisites

The CSU-Pueblo online registration system does not enforce prerequisites, but the Department of Engineering does. If you register for an Engineering course without the required prerequisites, there must be a signed statement in your file giving permission for your registration by the professor teaching the course.

Four year completion

To finish an engineering degree in 4 years, a first-time full-time student must start in the fall semester in calculus (Math 126) or a higher mathematics class.

Class scheduling

Because we are a small department, each EN course is offered only once a year (except for EN 101, 103, and 107). If a student does not follow the recommended schedule, conflicts in meeting times may result and the department may not be able to accommodate the student’s selection of courses. The student may, therefore, find that a year has been added to the possible completion date of the degree.

Approved technical electives and math/science electives

The BSIE and BSE degrees each require 3 credits of technical electives and 3 credits of math/science electives. A technical elective is a course that supports your education in engineering knowledge and practice. Most technical electives have significant engineering, mathematics, or science content. A subset of the technical electives qualify as math/science electives. A math/science elective has substantial mathematics or science content, typically at a level required for a mathematics, science, or engineering major.

You are responsible for making sure you have the prerequisite courses for these courses. For example, PSYCH 100 can count as a General Education course and then you are eligible to take the PSYCH courses listed here. Note that some courses (in ACCTG, PSYCH, and WS) are approved technical electives for BSIE majors only.

In choosing technical electives, BSE majors should consider which courses will help them prepare for the afternoon portion of the FE exam.

Under the university’s General Education requirements, all CSU-Pueblo students must take:

Dual degrees, BSIE and BSE

Students can receive a BSE and BSIE degree simultaneously. The university requirements for a second degree are as follows:

A second baccalaureate degree may be granted in a major area other than that in which the first baccalaureate degree was granted provided the student has met all requirements for the second baccalaureate degree, including not fewer than 30 semester hours of Colorado State University-Pueblo (resident) credit beyond the first degree with a minimum grade point average of 2.000. The additional 30 hours of credit must have the approval of the department from which the second degree is to be earned. Students seeking a second degree are eligible for the Deans’ List and for graduation with distinction.

The additional credits required for the second degree may be completed concurrently with the credits applying to the first degree and the two degrees may be granted simultaneously, providing all requirements are completed for both degrees. Simultaneous degrees require two separately completed degree planning sheets as well as the permission of the Provost.

If the student possesses a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university, the general education and institutional requirements are considered complete.

Considering the BSIE as the first degree, the BSE degree program requires 8 additional EN courses (24 credit hours). A second senior project (3 credit hours) and one additional technical elective (3 credit hours) are also required, making a total of 30 additional credit hours to receive the BSE as the second degree.

Minors

The Department of Engineering offers two minors, the Minor in Industrial Engineering and the Minor in Engineering. Students in either Minor are responsible for prerequisite courses not listed below. Courses in the Minor in Engineering have prerequisite and corequisite courses in math (Calculus I and II) and physics (College Physics I and II). Depending on the courses selected for the Industrial Engineering minor, some or all of those math and physics courses are required, as well as other courses not listed below. These minors are not available to students majoring in Engineering or Industrial Engineering.

Certificates

The Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate is awarded to any student who has completed EN 375 (probability and statistics, 4 credits) and EN 443/543 (Six Sigma quality, 3 credits) with grades of B or better. This certificate signifies that the recipient has demonstrated knowledge of all topics in the ASQ Six Sigma Green Belt Body of Knowledge. EN 375 is offered each fall semester and EN 443/543 is offered each spring. Calculus 1 is a prerequisite for EN 375. EN 375 is a prerequisite for EN 443/543.

The Lean Green Belt Certificate is awarded to any student who has completed EN439/539 (lean manufacturing, 2 credits) and EN 477/577 (operations planning and control, 3 credits) with grades of B or better. This certificate signifies that the recipient has demonstrated knowledge of all topics in the Lean Certification Alliance Body of Knowledge. EN 439 is offered each fall semester and EN 477/577 is offered each spring. EN 375 (probability and statistics) is a prerequisite for EN 439/539. EN 471/571 (operations research, 3 credits, offered each fall) is a prerequisite for EN 477/577.

The courses are part of the degree programs for the BS in Engineering (with specialization in mechatronics), BS in Industrial Engineering, MS in Engineering (with emphasis areas in mechatronics and in railroad engineering), and MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering. The certificates can also be earned by non-degree seeking students, who still must meet prerequisites, at CSU-Pueblo or with courses taken elsewhere.

The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

The first step to becoming a licensed professional engineer is to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, an all day exam over the knowledge you have gained in your entire engineering program.

We do not require engineering students to take the FE exam, but we do encourage students to do so. We receive feedback on the overall performance of our students (but not on the performance of individual students) and we use that feedback to evaluate our degree programs and make improvements. Also, we believe that our students can benefit by being able to tell prospective employers that they have passed this exam. The faculty urges students to review for the test by downloading and becoming familiar with the Supplied Reference Handbook; you will be given a copy of this Handbook at the exam and it is the only reference material you can use during the exam. If you pass the exam, the Department will reimburse you for the exam cost.

All examinees take the same exam in the morning, but each examinee can pick which afternoon specialty exam to take. BSIE students should definitely take the Industrial afternoon exam, but which afternoon exam do we recommend an EN student take? The Engineering faculty members reviewed the content of four of the afternoon exams (available at www.ncees.org) and estimated how much material an EN student should be able to answer from the EE (66), IE (47), ME (39), and Other Disciplines (66) exams.
