make for an easier transition for the new VPs. It’s a pattern we must continue in order to build and retain the institutional knowledge we need going forward.

We’re working hard on growing our committees, so I encourage all of you to consider joining one. Committees most in need of members right now are Planning, Finance, Special Events (in their dealings with production companies working in the neighborhood), and Beautification.

Thanks to Jim Abbot, TreeWatch Chair, and the IPNA TreeWatch Committee, this month Inman Park received the 2019 Trees Atlanta Community Canopy Award at the Root Ball Gala on May 9. This is indeed an award to be proud of, and our neighborhood is more beautiful due in large part to the efforts of TreeWatch.

Kudos to the hard-working Special Events Committee, chaired by Karen Goeckel, that has raked in close to $10,000 already this year in donations to IPNA from production companies.

Speaking of money, all committee chairs, please send in your FY budget requests by July 31 so that we can begin to plan for another year.

And now let’s welcome incoming Festival Chairs Jane Bradshaw Burnette and Samantha Bailey! Here’s to another great year in 2020!

More thanks to Cristy Lenz, Ro Lawson, Neil Kinkopf, Pat Westrick, and Ruth Wall for their input on this column!

The Cake May 17 – June 23 • Horizon Theatre • horizontheatre.com/plays/the-cake/

A baker and devout Christian struggles to reconcile her deeply-held belief in “traditional marriage” when she

is asked to bake a wedding cake for her best friend’s daughter who plans to marry another woman. Inspired by

a story still in the headlines, this marvelously funny new play by Bekah Brunstetter (TV’s This is Us) is proof

that love is the key ingredient in creating common ground.

The Magic GardenMay 18 • 5 p.m. • International Montessori Academy • movementartsatlanta.org

You are welcome to join Inman Park based Movement Arts Atlanta for its annual student recital. This story

ballet features the dancing talents of Inman Parkers; Eliana and Samantha Fossit, Julianne Gordon, Carolyn

and Evelyn McLaughlin, Ellie Roof and Campbell and Emmaline Tate. A short and sweet story of blooming

fl owers, picnicking friends, frustrated fairies and a frog will be followed by light refreshments. Free.

Atlanta Jazz FestivalMay 25 & 26 • Piedmont Park • atljazzfest.com/

Get a picnic and blankets (and your sunscreen) and bounce down to that pretty park for a relaxing day

of music and community fun. And it is a free event, thanks to much generosity. There’s a terrifi c lineup

this year—I’m particularly excited for the Ofer Assaf Quartet, Marcus Strickland, and the Royal Krunk Jazz

Orkestra, but you know it’s all going to be good. The annual 31 Days of Jazz will also be taking place May 1-31

at outposts all around the city; go here for locations: https://atlantafestivals.com/events/31-days-of-jazz/

Tunes from the TombsJune 8 • Oakland Cemetery • oaklandcemetery.com/event/tunes2019/

More music outdoors! Tunes from the Tombs is an all-local music lineup with beer, an artists market, and

mini-tours of Oakland. Tickets benefi t this fantastic Atlanta landmark—so consider it your donation for the

year and go have some fun.

Atlanta Streets Alive: Cross-CityJune 9 • From West Midtown to East Lake •atlantastreetsalive.com/cross-city

Atlanta’s Streets Alive occur several times a year and provides a radical re-imagining of our fair city without

the incessant motor vehicle traffi c. This one will be the biggest yet! Beginning in West Midtown at the

intersection of Marietta and Howell Mill Road and crossing all the way to downtown, across our beleaguered

Dekalb Avenue, and to East Lake, it will be a no-car zone through through 21 neighborhoods from 2:00 p.m.

to 8:00 p.m. At a bare minimum, you may consider this your PSA to not attempt to drive anywhere that day.

Juneteenth AtlantaJune 14-16 • Home Depot Backyard (near Mercedes Benz Stadium) • juneteenthatl.com

Juneteenth 2019 is especially signifi cant because it commemorates the 400th anniversary of the arrival of

Africans in the English colonies at Point Comfort, Virginia, in 1619. Music is all weekend long and the parade

kicks off at 10:00 am on June 15 with fi reworks to close it all out on June 16.

6Inman Park Advocator May 2019

Last month Inman Park beekeepers noticed a sudden bee die-off in some of their hives, with the bees displaying symptoms associated with pesticide poisoning. Basically the bees “act drunk” and fall to the ground. State investigators have been called to look into the exact cause, but at press time results were not available. Bees can bring pesticides into the hive while foraging and infect other bees.

There is some basic mosquito spraying protocol that can help minimize damage. Remember, if you decide to spray for mosquitos you are responsible for the chemicals you put into nature.

If you decide to spray for mosquitos, do not plant anything that flowers in your yard. Keep pollinators out. Don’t give them a reason to visit your yard! Garden centers can give you a list of non-pollinator plants.

If you spray, stay away from any bloom. Again, it’s the blooms that attract bees and other pollinators.

Spray if you must ONLY before 8 a.m. or earlier when few pollinators are out. It may cost extra, but beekeepers and pollinators will thank you.

Try to hold off spraying until very late in June or July. That’s when most plants have finished blooming. Spray yourself instead of your yard until then.

If you know you have beekeeping neighbors alert them of the spraying. They can close up hives temporarily if it’s not too hot.

Adjust to the climate we live in... If you want to sit outside on a summer evening consider a screened porch or fans rather than chemicals to make your yard a “living room.”

Thanks to those who pay extra for mosquito spraying that claims to be less toxic to bees. But know that even those can affect bees and other pollinators.

I know IPNA neighbors who have good reason to spray, including severe allergies to mosquitos, etc. They follow these mosquito spraying guidelines. Please follow their lead.

If you do not spray your yard, consider turning it into a pollinator-friendly yard. Plant things that flower and add color to your world!

Also, Inman Park is currently forming a pollinator club with the goal of turning our neighborhood into a pollinator-friendly place. If you are interested in joining, email [email protected]

Festival Focus

Festival 2019 is now a wonderful memory. In less than 2 short years we will celebrate our Golden Festival...50 Years! It’s hard to believe. As we keep saying, this Festival can only happen because of all of our volunteers. So those of you who took a shift or three, thank you from the Festival Committee and everyone who came to Festival.

Is one weekend a year not enough Festival for you? Don’t worry, we have a solution! The Festival Committee has about 35 committees which meet for about 8 months before the Big Weekend. We are always seeking new members and new ideas! The meetings are fun and involve snacks, beer, and wine!

This year, veteran web-master Chad Altermose revolutionized Tour Ticket Sales by introducing us to Ticketbud. This was a huge technology leap which greatly simplifi ed ticket sales and redemption for all involved. I predict digital tickets in the not so distant future! I realize that this is a big step because people love those booklets, but it’s also a lot of paper and ink in the landfi lls. This is something we are considering! But in the meantime, Karin Mebius did an amazing job in her new role as Printing Chair.

MARTA came through in the fi nal hour by re-opening our MARTA station the Thursday night before Festival. This challenge of uncertainty created a new volunteer opportunity just when Ashley Brimer expressed her interest in helping. She eagerly jumped on board and found parking spaces for all of the vendors who were going to be displaced by the potentially closed MARTA lots. Her husband Josh learned that we needed a Flag Captain, to hang and take down the American Flags, and took it on.

Michelle Ford and Jess Potts took on Marketing when our previous chairs suddenly moved to New York. They brought a new perspective and fresh ideas which are so important as we move towards our Festivals of the Future. They did a great job coordinating all of the other related committees.

Welcome back to Yvonne Merkel and Danny Black, who re-joined Festival for that most important Committee, Beer Sales! I’m happy to report that they did indeed, sell a lot of beer.

Chris Stezelberger took on Final Clean-up. Our sparkling clean neighborhood as soon as 9:30 p.m. on Festival Sunday proves that he was a success.

Karen Taber was in charge of organizing pre-Festival clean-up and trash pick-up. The neighborhood sparkled!

Charlie Powell and Sam Bailey came in as understudies to longtime Food Chairs, Robert and Wendy Orleman. They really are retiring after this year. Maybe next year they will come back as a food vendor. Crab Boy??? Robert, I like it! Thanks, we will miss you.

Kila Posey was an incredible Head of Sales. That woman gets things done and doesn’t take no for an answer! I can’t wait to try out my new wine tumblers.

Cory Feig-Sandoval ran solo this year as Trash General and Chief of Staph. It comes as no surprise that he did a great job. After all, he was raised on this Festival’s Trash.

Kristine Sandage did a great job running Finance solo this year after Ben Mitchell stepped back to the At-Large Committee.

Julie Noble began her training to one day take over Parade, whenever Karen Heim gets ready to retire.

Leigh Hayes joined us this year, helping Aimee Franz put on what I heard was another incredible Theatre Night.

Thea Quillian put on a memorable night at Butterfl y Ball. Her tribute to our much beloved neighbor Oreon Man was greatly appreciated by all who knew and loved Oreon. Oreon, it’s just not the same without you. You are missed. And Thea, we will miss you on Festival Committee.

Steve Ellison pulled out all the stops for his fi nal Festival as The Music Man! It made us all so happy to see you go by as our Parade Grand Marshall. We will miss you when you head off to North Carolina next week. Steve has insured that we are being left in capable hands with successors: Bradley Smith, Chair and Jacques Mebius, Sonny Franks & Karen Heim as Co-Chairs.

Always, a huge thanks goes out to all of those homeowners who graciously invited thousands of strangers into their homes. We know it is a lot of work, but we hope all of our appreciation has made it worthwhile. And the best part is that anything left on your home to-do list can just wait for a while!

Our thank-you to the returning Committee Chairs will be short, but their contributions are no less important. Thank you: Alex Kronemeyer - Advocator; Christel & Rob Craig – Arts & Crafts; Mollie & Whatley Fenlon - Rentals; Sandy Hoke - ATM machines; Randy Bailey – Buses; Jane Bradshaw- Caterpillar Ball and Volunteers; Carolyn McLaughlin - Dance Festival; Tom Pelletier – Electricity; Brett Lauter – Fire Safety; Richard Westrick – Fire Ants; Melissa Miller & Thom Abelew - Golf Carts; Alison Gordon – Kids’ Zone; Mary Fiorello – Social Media; Karen Heim – Parade; Jan Keith & Sally Dorn – Ticket Distribution, George Gary & Paul Perry – Radios; Katie Goldberg & Nikhil Perumbeti – Security; Lacey Goodwin & Janice Darling – Sponsorships; Regina Brewer, Nancy Morrison, and Judy Clements – Tour of Homes; Ward Bradshaw – Water; Pat Westrick and Carol & Ben Mitchell – At-Large; Kelly Krolikowski & Edwin Ortiz – Signs; Clark Cunningham & Rick Yates – Photography

We have thoroughly loved our role as Festival Co-Chairs for the past two years. It is such a rewarding job to lead such an amazing group of volunteers. You all are the best!!!! We are happy to announce that our successors are two young women who were born and raised in Inman Park. Jane Bradshaw and Sam Bailey are excited to take our reins. We leave you in great hands.

And speaking of leaving, we think that the Eagles were really singing about Inman Park instead of Hotel California. “You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave!” Many of you know that Cooper and I reached the tough decision that it was time to downsize. Having lived for the past 16 years in a home designed by Cooper, we knew we had to build again. There was just no place left to do that in Inman Park. So in February we moved to Reynoldstown, just one mile directly south of our old house. We are “camping” in our little church and plan to break ground soon, next door on our new home. Our hearts will always have one foot in Inman Park. We are staying involved in Festival and will Co-Chair Butterfl y Ball for the next two years with Julie Noble. We are so excited to work with Julie. Thank you all for the love, thank you for the Joel Award, and thank you for always making us feel welcome. We will see you at the pool this summer.

She has imbued the neighborhood with an air of theatricality

which has dramatically improved our reality. She stage managed the Road Fight

and knew the yellow hats would look just right.

Her elegance smooths our rough edgesand her prop department yields horses and carriages. She can produce an event beyond your wildest wish

like a fundraiser at the Fox with Marvin Hamlisch.

Her innovations are not contained to the Road Fight. She is one of the founders of Theater Night.

An idea so successful and so wise, surely entitles her to a MacArthur Genius Prize.

If she ran the world, what a place it would be.Like in the song, we’d live in perfect harmony.

Across the globe there would be a nuclear freeze. And instead of a coke, we’d all eat her famous sugar cookies.

And like any great theater handShe has returned by popular demand.

When the neighborhood’s residential character was threatened, she fought the proposal to see it was ended.

She was a leader on the working group for Villa de Grip. Her energy and wisdom will help keep Inman Park hip.

She has certainly become our neighborhood stage director.

If not for her efforts, Inman Park would look like the Connector.

So raise a glass and join the toast Y’allThis Joel Award goes to

A pair with drive and talent galoreLike most have not yet seen before.

They met in Atlanta a good while ago.And neither of them ever takes it slow.

They rolled up their sleeves to work for the good,Meaning the people in our HIP neighborhood.

For many years he organized Butterfly Ball,Which we think he secretly enjoyed most of all.

Since 2007, this gal’s been here with DevaLiving in the mews, sitting in the pews

At home with Accenture, that’s not her only ventureSipping Mimosas at brunch, by now you might have a hunch

On the Board, she is the Secretaryand does so much more than is necessary.

She has wisdom and insightand won’t back down from a fight.

She pitches in on parties with great flairwhich is why we had such a successful Volunteer Fair.To get the troops to City Hall, she organized the busesand that’s why we got there with no hassles or fusses.

What makes this person so specialIs not all that she does but who she is

She’s loyal, she’s trueshe’s strong when things get stressful

Like our neighborhood symbolShe looks to past and future

Whether its tea with Josie or Veuve with RuthLadies night for sushi or connecting with the youth

She’s the middle, a bridge, a visionary

We’re always sad when good friends and neighbors move away,So it was a joyous occasion when you returned to

Inman Park.

After downsizing to a house with real windowsYou could have simply enjoyed living the retired life in our Small-

Town DownTown,But you immediately agreed to be on the very next

Festival Tour of Homes.(We think you were hoping that would encourage the contractor

to finish on schedule!)Generously volunteering your time and donating your talents on

numerous committees,You reconnected with old friends and added many new ones.

Even more, you attended meetings, planned, hosted, ciphered, counted, wrote,

Photographed and wrangled with deadlines and printers.

You graciously opened your home for numerous Porch Parties(Only fitting, since you invented them).

Your resumes include Festival Treasurer, House Tour Photogra-pher,

House Tour Committee Member, Printer Manager, Map-Maker,Poster Framer, IPNA Directory Organizer

And Orchestrators of several amazing Fourth of July Parties!

You are committed neighbors who make a difference wherever you go,

Dear friends who fit back in as if you had never left.Welcome back, welcome home,

And thank you for once again being our neighbors and friends.

Carol and Ben Mitchell

She’s EVERYWHERE!!!

When she first moved to AtlantaShe took a look at the non-profit good ole boys’ networkAnd became one of a group of smart, passionate women

Who took charge and made changes for the greater good. Now Atlanta’s non-profit landscape is dominated by women

Who strive for diversity and unity.

She’s on the board of EVERYTHING!!!She began with Communities in Schools (formed in her living

room with Jeff)And now she’s the Chair of the Georgia Foundation for Public

Education.Because of the countless causes and efforts she’s championed,

She truly is one of Atlanta’s “Shining Lights.”

She leads the way with her minivan and million-watt smile,With boundless energy and endless enthusiasm.

She hosts porch parties and political candidate fundraisers,She’s established foundations, chaired non-profit boards

And leads in service to her church. As a leader, her unparalleled engagement

Has helped secure the best leadership in the city, county and state.

It’s her Southern charm, her positive intellect, her genuine care and concern,

It’s her graciousness to everyone she meets—from parking valet to CEO.

Bump into her speed walking on the BeltLine or at the grocery store

And she’ll ask you about YOUR day—and MEAN it!

She’s received her “Mel Torme Award,”But this LOVE LETTER is from her neighbors and BIGGEST

FANS--It’s Inman Park’s turn to praise her and claim her.

With pride and joy, we give this Joel Award to

"I've bought and sold four houses with Cynthia - and I truly couldn't recommend her more! Cynthia sold both of my homes in Candler Park for well above asking price and helped me buy two under asking price. She is a talented negotiator, but never pushy - she really listens to her clients and at the   same time has incredible instincts for the market" - Sloan Smith, Candler Park
