Dear Friends of Alliance,

We extend our sincere thanks to those who took part in the recent francophone season celebrations in Dar es Salaam. Building on that spirit, Alliance Française is giving you many more reasons to come out this May and June and enjoy a diverse set of social experiences. There is something for everyone in this latest series of events featuring live music, visual arts, cinema, new cuisine and more.

Music lovers in particular can look forward to a long lineup of performances. Artists such as Alif Naaba of Burkina Faso form part of an international selection of musicians coming to Dar. As part of an African tour, Elemotho, Namibian winner of the « Prix découverte RFI-France 24 2012 » (RFI Discovery Awards), will also be performing. For World Music Day on the 21st of June, Alliance Francaise joins the Goethe-Institut and the British Council in a celebration of diversity in music.

Food lovers must not miss the 1st of May opening of the restaurant “Le Bistrot”, an exciting new presence at Alliance Francaise. Patrons will enjoy the same great view and fresh breeze of the upstairs terrace, but with new management providing a new menu and atmosphere.

The art catalogue, published by the Vijana Vipaji Foundation,  is in both Swahili and English. The Swahili copies will be distributed for free to universities, colleges and secondary schools throughout the country.  The English version will be sold and the proceeds will go to the Vipaji Vijana Foundation who will setup workshops for Tanzanian artists.  The book has been dedicated to perhaps the most famous Tanzanian Artist, George Lilanga.

‘Short(s) of Africa’ is a collection of short films that attracted attention during the first two Afrique Taille XL festivals (Belgium). This innovative project was born of a joint wish on the part of Africalia (Belgian Co-operation), Afrique Taille XL and studio l’Equipe to offer African film-makers the place they deserve, to give these new sensibilities, these fascinating artists the chance to lease our emotions. The selection was made from among creative talents from all over the African continent. Funny or moving, but always relevant, they reflect the diversity of African cinematographic creation.

Café des idées 6.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Wednesday 29th May 2013

Come join the new “Café des Idées” at Alliance Française !

The French love detailed and often heated discussions over long lunches or dinner. This is the idea behind the Café des Idées, to become a gathering place for all who are interested in discussing and analyzing social, political and cultural life in France.

Le Café des Idées will provide a space for all kinds of people who have good ideas to speak openly. At each gathering, one or two themes will be defined and a discussion in French will begin, with people sharing and debating over their views. One principle that everyone must follow: Respect each other’s opinions!

The group will have a group leader (an animator/animatrice) who is a native French speaker. Places are limited ! We want to keep the group small so that everyone has a chance to speak.

Alif Naaba(Burkina Faso)

Alliance Show Grounds Starts 7.30pm

ENTRANCE FREE

Thursday 13th June 2013

Named "the bare footed Prince ", Alif Naaba is introduced to the public with his first album "Regard Métis", and is quickly adopted by the Burkinabé public. But it is his second album entitled "FOO ", released in 2005, which really shot him into the lead and gives him his first opportunities on several stages; (in particular in France and in the United States, where he takes part in the prestigious Globalfest in 2010). And since then, Alif is constantly making his voice and music heard. Rocked since his childhood by the songs of a traditional chansonnier mother, Alif Naaba’s music is deeply colored with this intimacy. A subtle mixture of Burkina Faso rhythms, folk music and sprinkled with Jazz. Within the framework of the French Institute regional tours, "the bare footed Prince ", will make a presentation of his new album entitled Yi-ki to us. Written on the roads between Paris and Ouagadougou and born in his residence as the winner of the prize « Visa pour la création 2012 ».Singular album, marked with emotions and hope, he represents a beautiful opened window on the world with songs in Mooré (the most spoken language in Burkina Faso), and in French on richly mixed rhythms.

5 Broken Cameras(France, Palestine, Israël)

Alliance Française6.30pm

ENTRANCE FREE

Friday14th June 2013

The first-ever Palestinian film to be nominated for best Documentary Feature by A.M.P.A.S®, the critically-acclaimed 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a deeply personal, first-hand account of life and non-violent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village surrounded by Israeli settlements. Shot by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, Gibreel, the film was co-directed by Burnat and Guy Davidi, an Israeli filmmaker. Structured in chapters around the destruction of each one of Burnat’s cameras, the filmmakers’ collaboration follows one family’s evolution over five years of village upheaval.

As the years pass in front of the camera, we witness Gibreel grow from a newborn baby into a young boy who observes the world unfolding around him with the astute powers of perception that only children possess. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify and lives are lost in this cinematic diary and unparalleled record of life in the West Bank. 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a Palestinian-Israeli-French co-production. A Kino Lorber Release.

19th June 2013

TEA OR ELECTRICITY tells the epic story of the implementation of electricity in a tiny isolated village enclosed in the middle of the Moroccan High Atlas. Over more than three years and season after season, the director patiently reveals the outlines of the net that will inevitably end up closing on the people of Ifri. Before our eyes is drafted the image of the merciless modernity that the small village will now be connected to. The film won the best documentary award at the Magritte 2013 (Belgium), has been selected by the Festival Primed of Marseille (France, June 2013), the Mountain Film Festival of Barcelonette (France, April 2013), and the American Documentary Film Festival of Palm Springs (California, April 2013)
