A letter from Chapter President, Hello all,

It’s official, summer was over on September 23rd. What do we have to show for it? I have what is now a fast-fading tan that was built over the beautiful long sum-mer days that we all enjoyed over the last four months. In discussions with mem-bers of our chapter’s board it sounds like we all experienced something in those months that we hadn’t seen in a while, a backlog. The general feeling out there is that the next three to six months may not show us the same kindness. Time will tell.

Denny Wade’s work in our behalf made for a great “Summer Fun” chapter meeting in Bend Oregon. The River House Resort proved to be a location with everything that we needed and a view to go with it. Our board meeting was a little rough but each of your committees reported on our upcoming moves. We are working with Nate at the Arizona chapter of the AFA to use their format for their chapter web-site (www.arizonaafa.com) to use as the template for ours. I plan on meeting with him at his office next month to work out the details. We are still looking for the next chapter project and Dick Boyle would love to hear your suggestions. The golf tournament was a blast with a great group of participants.

The meeting brought us a few changes too with Dennis Fleck being voted in as secretary/treasurer taking over for veteran Debbie Smith. We welcome new board members Jennifer West of West Meyer Fence, Michael Carrol of Davis wire, and John Rosebeary of Viking Fence who were voted in at our dinner. Also announced was the retirement of Paul Johnston and Don Boose from the Board of Directors and all of us certainly appreciate their time spent in our behalf.

On a national level there has been a few big changes also with President Elect Chris Chapman resigning from his office before he took over the position. The board of directors is scrambling to resolve the issue with a flurry of discussions, emails, and conference calls without a firm resolution as of yet. On that note, our own association has a decision to make at our upcoming winter meeting regard-ing our own president elect. Dick Boyle has confirmed his desire to lead us.... okay really it came down to Alex Weisensee, Dennis Fleck, and I on our knees begging.

The winter meeting is now taking shape with a dinner and an educational semi-nar for a December 11th date. Two class subjects have been chosen for us: 1) How Current Health Care Law Changes Will Effect Us and 2) Design Build/Plan and Spec Bidding. Look out for an update in the next few weeks for full details.

I look forward to seeing you all on December the 11th, please mark this date in your calendar. Thank you all for your participation in our chapter activities, get the most of your association membership.

Backstory

Where is thisunusualI received a call from Terry, he’s a friend of Kyron’s mother’s side of the family. He asked me for a bid on a new

fence and then he said without chain link on it in the Skyline area. I asked if it was for Kyron, because I saw on the news the previous night volunteers moving the fence from the Skyline school where Kyron went, down to the Fire station down the street. The Tualatin Valley Fire Dept. on Skyline offered their front yard to be the new location for the fence. I met with Terry up at the department and there the fence laid in 4 pieces that needed to go in the front of the fire station. The fence had thousands of well wishes and hope signs for Kyron’s safe return. Terry had told me that Convoy wanted to donate the posts for the fence. I talked to Lance about the job and we unanimously agreed to donate whatever we could for the fence. I called Security Contractor Services and they were more than happy to donate the top rail for the fence.

Terry and I created a 70’ arch design for the fence. Our fabricator bent the top rail for the arch and Friday we in-stalled the entire framework for the fence. Terry said it would be crazy and buzzing with reporters, and he wasn’t kidding! He and my crew volunteered me to be the “spokesperson” and talk to the news crews. That was unnerv-ing. But on Tuesday when we went back to finish the fence it was nuts. Flash bulbs and news cameras surrounded us. Lance, our fence crew and myself helped volunteers carry the fence to the framework and our crew finished the installation. Kaine, Kyron’s dad was there to help move the fence and was so happy to have it back up. He said this would give everyone hope and he said we did an excellent job. He and his family were so grateful and kind. I couldn’t help but tear up at how much they are going through and to keep the hope alive that someday Kyron will come home.

About 50 people attended the event that was presided over by president John Krueger. The dinner was wonderful, a buffet of Chicken Forestiere, grilled salmon and roast pork loin. Many guests commented on the excellence of the food. Our thanks to the chef and the great staff at the Riverhouse. After dinner the golf awards were presented. $ 940.00 were presented to the golfers for scores, long drives and closest to the pins. Besides the winning team,Prizes were presented to Whitney Ray, Sue Wade, Sam Fierro and Jon Lohn. An Honorable Men-tion was given to Petronella Boose for her long drive on the men only long drive hole. After golf awards, a raffle started. The prizes were in sealed envelopes filled with cash, from a low of $40.00 to a high of $500.00. Congrats to our grand-prize winner, Tim Brown. Our Pacific Northwest Chapter donated the grand prize and all others came from the following: Quality Fence of Oregon Town & Country Fence Northwest Fence Company Davis WireSecurity Contractor Services Merchants Metals Metro Acccess Control R & S AutomationGates and Controls Willamette Fence Co., Inc. As usual, a THANK YOU to all of these member for their donations. Year after year these compa-nies have stepped up to make our summer meetings the best in the entire AFA. We were able to give away $ 3,040.00 in cash to our guests at this years meeting.

PS: next year at the dinner, try not to set at Steve Reitmans Table. For some reason, they just don’t seem to win a lot of the drawings.

The awards banquet and meeting recap by Denny Wade:

Director Paul Johnston strokes his last putt on the 18th green. Paul is retiring and we wish him nothing but the best. Paul has been a valuable member of the board of directors for many years and we have benefitted from his many con-tributions, loyalty and hard work over the years. Thank you Paul.

New Directors Jennifer West of West-Meyer Fence and John Rosebeary of Viking Fence. Another addition is Mike Carrol of Davis Wire.

Our talented hostess for the Meet and Greet.

Our Secretary/Treasurer Debbie Smith of ABC Fence Co. She will be retiring from her position next year so we’d like to thank her for her 18 years of service to the AFA.
