    Reflection

Two types of reflection Specular (Mirror-like)

    Diffuse (Paper-like)

    Dependent on: Type of Covering

    Reflection & Contrast

Contrast is directly relatedto amount of ambient light

    Modulation Transfer Function (MTF)

Significant activities to analyze and compute MTFaccurately Hired Professor Fairchild to advise and inspect our

    procedures and results

Developed alternative approach to compute MTF Computed MTF with two approaches

Selected 6 display, tested, and send them to Ron withboth MTF results

    11/24

    MTF (Conventional Approach)

    The red box

    is the

    frequencyrange that

    we are

    interested in

    Uses Imatest

    software suite

    Takes a FFT of a

    single characteredge to generate

    the MTF

    Measures what thescreen is capable

    of producing

  • 8/6/2019 Afb Tech Svd Advisory Board y2

    12/24

    Alternate MTF

    Part of the Software

    Shell using MATLAB

    Takes an FFT of an

    entire row ofcharacters to

    generate the MTF

    Measures what thescreen actually

    produces

    Display Standard

Objective: To Develop An Display QualityMetric for Evaluating SVDs

The Palo Alto VA is evaluating the Barten

SQRI as a valid display metric

SQRI uses MTF with the Contrast SensitivityFunction (CSF) to value display accessibility

Following the study, the SQRI will be usedas the primary display characteristic in theSVD database

    Future Work

First Priority: Work with Ron to develop an SVDStandard and implement it into Optics Lab measurements

Complete, finalize & document Optics Lab measurements

    Acquire 120 additional SVD products

    Conduct measurements and populate Database

Complete testing and documentation of the Database(both internally & externally)

    Display Demonstration Center (DDC)

Create a portable DDC to demonstrate SVDs used in commonconsumer products (7 to 10 products)

DDC will be an integral part and a complement to the Optics Lab

Emphasis on displays used in health care products , cell phone, thermostat, eBook (Kindle)

A broad representation of the variety of display technologies thatrepresent the best in its class

Use actual isolated display components separated from their productapplications. These displays are driven by PCs or dedicatedmicrocontrollers. Using actual display components rather than using

devices: Displays can be controlled and optimized for display quality

    characteristics.

Flexible to upgrade the portable DDC by introducing the latest displaytechnology.
