Hidden against the Helderberg Mountain Range, is one of the most prestigious and sought after wine farms

within the Cape Winelands. Lourensford Wine Estate is a world class wine farm with its most picturesque vineyards with a breath taking mountain back drop. This lush paradise offers a top notch cellar venturing experience to tourists and local wine connoisseurs.

Weddings, birthdays, special celebrations and conferences take place at this beautiful wine farm throughout the year, but one guest seems to have found a more

permanent residence at the Lourensford Wine Estate.

Renowned artist, Frans Groenewald has found his little piece of heaven and a good place to stay inspired to captivate crowds with his unique style of Art. Frans has made his mark with his humorous approach to art. “People must relate to my art and everyone loves above the line and clean humour.” It is important to the artist that the humour is for all ages, but more so that children understand it too.

When visiting Frans and getting to know the man behind the art it was clear that he is a very sociable character; workers and guests greeted him and took time to engage with him, as they would get a

witty answer. “I love getting a laugh out of people, but more so through my art.” This has kept his passion going for so long and keeps him inspired as an artist.

Frequenting the Coffee Roasting Company, coffee shop, Frans draws ideas from watching people socialise and share meals or by simply enjoying a coffee. Whilst walking around in the coffee shop we soon found out that Frans was the genius behind branding for packaging of a few of the products.

This was only a tip of the ice berg as far as his knowledge of graphic design and photography was concerned. The coffee mugs, diaries, calendars and cards on display and available for sale are all Frans’ fine work.

When asked about recent projects, Frans turned and fetched a beautifully illustrated book. I waited for him to

“A refreshingly humorous approach to everyday scenes...”

tell me to go to a specific page, but to my surprise it was the book itself. Doing all the graphic work and illustration Frans collaborated with Tina Scott and created a range of children’s story books.

Frans added that graphic design gave him a more marketing edge to his art work. He could create paintings that depict a scenario or play on words with images, creating a humorous work of art.

Frans plays with various images, topics and characters, but the one he uses most is the chef’s theme. His work combining chefs, art and humour got him involved in a project that was started by Bidvest, called Bidvest Chefs Against Hunger. This is a charity event where chefs tour South Africa and make meals in aid of raising funds for homeless children, also feeding them in the process.

One of Frans’ paintings was auctioned off for a substantial amount with all proceeds going to the initiative. He is a strong believer in collective social responsibility and it is evident in his approach to life. P

His new work will illustrate this in more depth.

“The kitchen is the heart of the home; this is a place where most people are most of the time in their houses. This is the place where food, wine and good conversation are shared. If we invite someone into this part of the home, it shows acceptance and this is where relationships are built. I want people when they see my art to relate and laugh, so I see myself as a kitchen artist.” This is what Frans wants us to see through his art.

Frans’ believes “chance favours the prepared mind.” He believes that the imagination is a key part of a person and that nobody should ever let there imagination cease to be part of daily life.

He pointed out as child we are extremely creative, idea factories but to the mid life era we lose this because our daily routines we don’t exercise our imaginations. Then to the latter stage of most of our lives we become creative again, which is evident in a lot of our senior citizens and children.

The people of Lourensford know Frans by his signature red Vesper. Come rain or shine Frans can be seen driving his scooter – an indicator to guests and staff that the busy artist, Husband and father of two boys, is on the farm or in his studio.

When entering the studio, we were welcomed by some of Frans’ art and drawn to piece that he has just started on. He was busy with his background which he always makes abstract. Frans spoke about always striking a balance between the images painted, the background and the play on words. If the pictures are too perfectly painted, he feels, it takes away of the humour and relating effect.

In the time spent with Frans it was evident why people really enjoyed being around him. His wealth of knowledge and humorous approach to life and art made it easy for one to listen and just absorb what he had to say. He had a story to tell through everything he did and this was apparent in his calendars story books and art paintings. The future is an active and inspired one for Frans who often finds himself involved in projects for the Southern Sun Hotel Group and his new found passion for illustrating children books, namely “Kachoo”

Guests are welcome to visit Frans as part of the full Lourensford Wine Estate experience. His work is on display and available for sale. If you spot the red Vesper, be sure to say hi to one of the Gems on the Cape Winelands.

Ntsiki Biyela, winemaker at Stellekaya has experienced

highlights in her 9 years of winemaking and being a decorated female winemaker, in a male dominated industry.

“I received a bursary from SAA to study BsC Agriculture; it was the only course I could get a bursary for.” No stranger to hard work, Ntsiki discovered her passion for winemaking while completing her in-service training at the Delheim Wine Farm. “Watching the winemaker Phillip Constandius, after our first harvest, how he worked with the grapes, pressing and stirring. Watching him walk through the cellar, tasting each barrel, seeing how he worked the cellar, this is where my passion came from.” The passion was transferred into Ntsiki as she was soon earmarked by the owners and groomed for greatness.

“Mr and Mrs Sperling, owners of

Delheim saw something in me I did not. I was treated like family and they invested time in me.” Victor, the owner’s son then took her out of the wine tasting centre to the Vineyards and unbeknownst to her, tested the experience she had gained while sharing valuable information to help her improve. “He took me to the vine, asked me how I would prune the plant. At the same time he would show me and better my technique.” This took time as she was learning but the Sperling’s were patient and gave her confidence in her ability.

“Phillip Constandius really taught me a lot. We struggled with communicating as I did not understand Afrikaans fully and he couldn’t speak English fully.” Although she could not understand what he was showing her she could see there was so much he could not convey, regardless I was convicted by his passion. “I now knew what it is I wanted to do in

life, I wanted to be a winemaker!”She then completed her in service training at Delheim in 2003. “The Sperling’s and I have a close relationship; they take me as a daughter. I will always be grateful to them for what I have learnt and still call them for advice from time to time.”

When her studies were completed she begun looking for work but for a long time could not find a position as a winemaker. Her awareness that her gender posed a challenge in the male-dominated industry did not deter her. She knew the fact that she was a female was a huge factor as men are mostly in demand for the winemaker position.

In 2004 Dave Lello, the owner of Stellekaya was looking for a winemaker and he took a chance on hiring a female winemaker. Ntsiki was finally a winemaker at Stellekaya, stelle meaning stars and kaya being home, she has lived

up to the name, as she brought the stars home.

It did not take long for Ntsiki to make a name for herself within this industry. Travelling is not only a client experience, seeing her go to places like France, USA, Germany, Belgium and China, but mainly a learning experience as she gains exposure and valuable insight into global industry trends.

Ntsiki shared her expertise effortlessly. We asked which winemaking technique is most frequently used. “It is normally the preference of the company. In countries like France, they use the machine technology as labourers are very expensive. ”In South Africa the wine industry has a mixed feeling as to the winemaking method or technique.

Not many Farmers/winemakers use the new method although it is less expensive and not too labour intensive. The traditional method is mostly used by our huge winemakers and farms. The taste and texture is very important and all this is created through the process. The sorting of grapes is much more intensive when done manually, as humans can see what colour the grapes are and in what state the grape is when sorted, this adds to the character of the wine whereas machine sorting does not allow for this. This is one of the flaws that the new technology presents and maintains the conventional method still as the trusted method.

“The last harvest in France was my toughest one ever.” Ntsiki experienced a harvest in poor weather conditions making it an experience to learn from and gather invaluable experience. This is the busiest time of a winemakers’ season and the weather really pushed everyone out of their comfort zone. South Africa is not far behind France and USA who are leading the wine industry.

“My favourite grape to work with is the Sangiovese grape. It is a very inky grape and I just love working with it.” Though it is the grape from Italy it is most famous as the main component of the blend. Sangiovese has fresh fruity flavours of strawberry and a little spiciness, but it readily takes on oaky, even tarry, flavours when aged in barrels. In the hands of Ntsiki it becomes a world renowned wine full of character and taste.

“Life is like a merlot, it never tastes the same as another winemaker’s merlot, but it is still a merlot.” Ntsiki believes that no two experiences are the same therefore we cannot pre judge any situation or person. This ethos has gotten her to where she

is today. She believes in giving others a chance just as she was given.

Ntsiki is the Director of the Pinotage Youth Development Academy, where 25 students were selected to join the programme. Here just like Ntsiki was taught, students get to go out onto the farms and see what it is they are being taught in class, they get to prune the vineyards and go back in different seasons too see how the different stages of the seasons affect the growth of the vine and vineyards.

When interviewing Wandisa, one of the students we found out more about the programme.

All 25 students are from the Boland region, namely Stellenbosch (14) and Paarl (11)The 12 month course that runs from June till May and is an accredited course by the Winetech and can lead to employment or as a step to further studies. Students are trained in the hospitality and tourism as well as equipping them for the wine industry and other related industries. Wandisa has adopted a passion for winemaking and sees herself following Ntsiki’s footsteps.

Ntsiki keeps herself grounded by always aspiring to do better. “My mentor Zelma Long, is someone I will always look up to and now we are so close I don’t know

how to define the relationship.” They all consider her to be up there with them in the industry but her grounding nature is what motivated her.

At an end of a long day Ntsiki does not mind what is in her glass, as long as it is full, round and dependant on the mood, she will enjoy it. “I love Highland Wines for the Bordeaux Blends and my Cape Cross.” The first 10 years in Ntsiki’s winemaking career was full of adventure and turning the male predominantly industry on its head so we are excited to see what a further 10 years has to offer to one of the gems of Winelands.

Concealed behind the lush beauty of the Lourensford Wine Estate and the end of the borders of Lourensford Road

one would find your culinary slice of Europe. The Millhouse Kitchen, a French Italian cuisine restaurant infused with South African ingredients, is the trade mark of owner and Executive Chef Bjorn Guido.

After an insightful return from Europe, Bjorn landed a position as Head Chef at The Franschhoek Kitchen Holden Manz Wine Estate and had the opportunity to transform the then restaurant into a French Italian Restaurant. Our view “Bjorn Is nothing far from a young South African chef that brought Jamie Oliver to our doorstep.”

It was only at two shakes of a lamb’s tail, that Bjorn was offered the opportunity to take complete ownership of the River Garden a Bistro Coffee Shop and add his creative out of the box touches that would see the rapid transformation towards The Millhouse Kitchen.

The genesis of the Bjorn Guido started at a tender age of 4 years old when he received his first cooking book, which steadily saw him advance to his first family dish at the age of 8. After his schooling career Bjorn was well on his way towards becom-ing a Reconstructive Facial Surgeon. Something felt misplaced when his career was in direct opposition to his passion. His pas-sion soon became his career as he studied towards becoming a chef.

Thereafter Bjorn travelled Europe and was offered a position at Babington House at the very bottom, under renowned Chef Ronnie Bonetti. Nothing stopped this young enthusiast of reaching the pinnacle in the culinary arts. This soon saw him cooking alongside the generals in the industry namely Gordon Ramsey, Nigella, Jamie Oliver and our very own Peter Temple-hoff

“Working at the Babington House was awesome as many ce-lebrities would frequent, one night while socialising with Paul McCartney, I got to sing a famous song of his with him which I will never forget.”

More diversity was gained by Bjorn when he went back packing through Europe, seeing and experiencing foods and restaurants, which opened up his mind in developing his own unique style.

After the complete metamorphosis, the end of 2012 marked the beginning of the Millhouse Kitchen. The doors were opened as many came and experienced the best of Europe in the concealed landscape of Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West. Many

were impressed with what was on offer, how it was presented and within the ambience it was experienced. The Rustic ap-proach to architecture and interior design gives the relaxed feel-ing that goes along with the peaceful surroundings on the farm. The Interior was meticulously finished, with wood detail on the walls that originated from pallets that were used for the bottling that takes place on the farm.

The clay oven serves as a window that allows Italy to flow uninterrupted to the Winelands, each and every meal served has seen the rapid return of clients both on a local and international front.

When asked which serves as Bjorn’s signature dish, Bjorn firmly pointed out the entire menu, which proudly holds his stamp of approval.

The 26 year old Top Chef, entrepreneur added a few more notches to his business belt.

Soon seeing the release of his book, which would highlight seasonal South African cuisine recipes. Looking at what is locally available from a fresh produce, the book will be released in early 2014 having a lot of followers waiting patiently.

The 15th and 16th of February, will be a start of a project that will be hosted by Bjorn and sponsored by Checkers annually. It is a national project that will start in his home town, Somerset West. The Food and Wine Festival will be held annually in a different province boasting food ingredients found within 50 km of the venue where it is hosted. The food will be enjoyed by the locals bringing com-munities together enjoying world class food and

wine. From kitchen extraordinaire to owning an I.T app company Irate, Bjorn is a true visionary with an edge, as health and fitness being a major factor in our daily lives, Bjorn is in the process of building a Cross fitness VIP private gym that can accommo-date 100 members on the Lourensford Wine Estate.

Far from a Drill Sergeant, yet he commands his kitchen and uses his calm nature to instill confi-dence. It was clear to see the closeness between all the Millhouse Kitchen family which is strongly mo-tivated by Bjorn, whom is a firm believer in build-ing his employees confidence in what they do and more so, who they are. “When they are confident, they enjoy what they do and automatically grow.

Helette Du Toit is a photographer that brings out the natural beauty and uniqueness of each person using natural light that gives her realistic look and feel to all she captures.

“I’ve always loved photography!” Helette explains how since being a child she was fascinated by a device that can capture images merely pointing it at an object and changing your view. As a girl she would spend time watching her father capture moments with the then Olympus SLR. From young a age her passion for photography was birthed. The saying “A picture says a thousand words” is so true!

byFRAME Helette studied Law at the University of Stellenbosch and soon moved to USA. She practiced law until she was on maternity leave. “At that point I wanted to do nothing else, other than enjoy every minute with my little miracle baby.”

Helette completed a course in Professional Photography at the New York Institute of Photography which carefully taught her certain disciplines; how to use light in your favour and even darkroom work.

Initially it was nothing more than a hobby with the intent to later convert it into a career. Advancing with the opportunity to capture all she was taught,

set a platform for her to casually allow her images to tell a story. Friends were mesmerized with the work produced through this novice photography.

“I love people and their stories. If the emotions they are experiencing at that moment can be seen on the photos, they will have visual memories to last them a lifetime. I try to ensure that my shoots are as fun and relaxed as possible!”

Being on set and working with Helette is a professional experience. She truly does bring out the object being shot in its natural beauty. Clients are always at ease as they do not feel like they are being photographed, this is one of Helette’s

A good photo immediately focuses the viewer’s attention on the subject.

THIS CAN BE DONE BY:

Crop the photo to remove all the clutter, Use light creatively

Blurring the background or composing the scene in such a way that the eye is drawn to the subject, this will ensure your photo to tell its story.

Shelter. They are doing a phenomenal job on a daily basis taking care of the needs of those most vulnerable in our town, the homeless. The vision of the shelter is to Bring Hope to the Homeless. This year we are assisting them with gathering 54 packs for Christmas gifts. Take a look at the details below, hopefully you will be inspired to get involved.

It’s amazing how going out of our comfort zone and stepping into the unknown can enlarge who a person is. After several years of involvement with the shelter, I become the Chairper-son. I still wonder why me God? But on the other hand I know exactly why, God wanted to take me deeper into my relation-ship with him. I needed to go to a place where my trust was without borders. To be honest I don’t enjoy people who have had to sleep rough on the street for the night, because they smell and are dirty. I don’t like that, but the reality is the homeless

He represents forgiveness, love, acceptance and generos-ity. That’s worth celebrating. It’s always funny how most

religions join in, because it really is an inclusive season. A time to reconnect with family and to show appreciation for who they are. The only thing better than receiving a gift is to give one. When you give a gift if opens up the doors of a persons heart. It’s always easy to give to family and friends, as they are deserving because of the relationship that we have with them. The bigger challenge is always to give to those who have no relationship with you and or can’t give back. It’s amazing how many people are realising that this is one of the most wonderful life giving experiences. As a church we know that it is our duty and call to care and love those in our community. We cannot touch everyone, but we can make sure that we express love to those that God has connected us with. For almost 10 years now we have connected ourselves with the Somerset West Night

Christmas means many different things to us. Some dread it, some love it. Most can’t understand all the fuss. The main focus should be Jesus and that

He is here and that everyone has the opportunity to connect with who He is and what He represents.

person doesn’t like it either. Everyone needs a helping hand, they need someone to care and show compassion. What I love most about Christmas is the SPIRIT of reaching out to others in love. We have such incredible, desperate and obvious need on our doorstep, which is stressful and challenging, but it can also be seen as a wonderful opportunity. An opportunity for you to look at who you are and what you have and how you can make a difference in someones life.

The end of the year also happens to be the time when most of us are worn out and need a break. Thankfully the sunshine brings a happiness about that we all enjoy, evenings are longer and we have a sense of freedom and not being house bound. If you are working retail hours, we pray for strength and grace. If you are going to be going on holiday we pray for journey mercies. If you are staying local and enjoy the beauty and splendour of the

Helderberg, take care! There are so many blessings to count that one can’t keep up. We have so many dynamic significant churches in our area, if you are plugged into one of them, enjoy. If not, then please join us for our 6 pm Christmas Eve service at our Strand Campus in Boundary Road or Christmas Day for the 8 or 9:30 am services (one hour each) at the Somerset West Campus, opposite the Lord Charles in Lobelia Street.

We trust that you will draw closer to God, His love and realise that Christmas was and is for YOU!§
