• The number of mobile subscriptions in Africa will rise from 648.86 million at end-2011 to cross the one-billion mark during 2015 and reach 1.13 billion at end-2017, according to forecasts by Informa Telecoms & Media (see Fig.). Africa’s mobile broadband market continues to be dominated by 3G+ connections. This is expected to remain the case in the near future despite the great interest in LTE from operators on the continent.
• The African data market is expected to record double-digit growth as competition among operators intensifies. The availability of low-cost smartphones will encourage a surge in data usage.
• African operators will continue to deploy mobile-money-transfer services as key revenue channels. However, mobile-money services are evolving to offer much more than person-to-person transfers and to become integrated mobile financial services that will require necessary security measures to prevent fraud.
• Telecom regulators in the region continue to pursue various measures to ensure the quality of service provision by operators. Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda are a few markets where operators have been served with hefty penalties for poor quality of service. This is expected to spread to other markets and will force operators to invest in improving the quality of services they provide to their customers.
• The commercial launch of LTE services by Movicel, MTC and Emcel is expected to lead the way for other operators in Africa. Several other operators in Africa have already completed LTE trials and are only awaiting spectrum auctions for them to roll out the networks.

• Assessing the impact of regulation on IOT’s• Is the next wave of growth coming from prepaid roaming?• Are Smartphones the key drivers for further growth of data
usage?• What is the impact on cloud hosted services on roaming?
In this interactive session, the audience will share experience and ideas
ANALYST VIEWPOINT“The opportunity for roaming in Africa is tied to the available audience for roaming services, which is limited by factors that include national expenditures and the GDP PPP of would-be roamers and travel patterns in the region. On the positive side, Africa’s roamers are biased toward enterprise users who generally have higher disposable incomes and are less affected by price fluctuations.
This characteristic will result in Africa seeing a CAGR of 13.4% in its roaming revenues between 2011 and 2016, according to Informa’s latest roaming forecasts, which is the highest growth rate of any region over this period, albeit from a low starting point.
One of the main challenges facing operators in Africa – and also beyond – is the customer perception of roaming. Issues range through a full gamut of customer emotion from fear of overspend (bill shock) to confusion regarding services (service and pricing transparency). What is universal is the urge to be in control of the roaming experience. The need for transparency is particularly important with promoting the usage of data services.
Although there are still a number of challenges to face in Africa, the potential market for roaming is palpable. The voracious appetite for mobile services in the region will no doubt drive roaming take-up but regional operators can also encourage roaming trends as they occupy a pivotal position in the process.”
