The diverse continent of Africa has over the last few years shown remarkable growth in the deployment of fibre optic network infrastructure and is rapidly developing with the implementation of state-of-the-art optical fibre technologies.Never has the timing been more ideal for a fibre focused conference aimed at Africa, with a special focus on Africa’s unique conditions. As the industry is emerging, more issues are becoming apparent and effective dialogue and sharing of information is critical to ensure a sustainable future for fibre optic deployment on the continent.

The Conference will cover a variety of topics aimed at the telecoms sector and policy-makers, Ministries, local, provincial and national government leaders as well Competition authorities and broadband strategy decision makers.

Attendees should include all stakeholders with a vested interest in fibre related networks or applications and services, property management companies, civil contractors, incumbent/alternative

operators as well as consultancies, financial organisations, analysts and researchers focused on the fibre communications sector.

We will consider deployments from sub-marine, national long distance, metro and access deployments, as well as vertical markets impacts- advertising, healthcare, education, machine-to-machine communications.

We welcome you to visit telecom operators, discuss technology trends, and most important, the sustainability of fibre networks in Africa. Come learn from experienced global companies and hear from officials from around the world about the strategies they will use to give their countries the FTTX advantage.

The FTTH Council Africa is a not for profit, INDEPENDENT, organisation established in the latter parts of 2010 and sister organisation to the FTTH Council Europe, Asia Pacific, North America, Middle East and North Africa.

In 2011 the WiMAX Forum hosted its first WiMAX Africa Summit at AfricaCom. The event drew more than 85 attendees, including representatives from 18 WiMAX operators, to discuss the opportunity for WiMAX in Africa. Attendees were treated to a full program including speakers from WiMAX operators, equipment and solutions vendors, members of the African investment community and WiMAX Forum staff.

WiMAX Africa 2012 will again bring together the region’s WiMAX community to meet, exchange ideas and develop business and cooperative relationships. The event will highlight the opportunities, challenges and strategies involved in operating a profitable WiMAX network in Africa.

TECHNOLOGY AND CONTENT IN AFRICAAfrican start-ups, streaming sites, investors and digital experts will join Stephen Newton, CEO of Billboard Africa to discuss how the Internet, mobile and social media – and the data that digital platforms can provide - will shape the music industry and enable artists to succeed in Africa.

LIVE EVENTS, TOURING AND FESTIVALS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAAfrican festival organisers, promoters, media owners and sponsors will join Billboard’s head of content & programming for touring and live

entertainment to look at issues such as naming rights, tour finance, the live experience in Africa; how artists can benefit and the impact of digital marketing and social networking.

AFRICA MARKET TRENDS – INFORMA TELECOMS & MEDIA

• The number of mobile subscriptions in Africa will rise from 648.86 million at end-2011 to cross the one-billion mark during 2015 and reach 1.13 billion at end-2017, according to forecasts by Informa Telecoms & Media (see Fig.). Africa’s mobile broadband market continues to be dominated by 3G+ connections. This is expected to remain the case in the near future despite the great interest in LTE from operators on the continent.

• The African data market is expected to record double-digit growth as competition among operators intensifies. The availability of low-cost smartphones will encourage a surge in data usage.

• African operators will continue to deploy mobile-money-transfer services as key revenue channels. However, mobile-money services are evolving to offer much more than person-to-person transfers and to become integrated mobile financial services that will require necessary security measures to prevent fraud.

• Telecom regulators in the region continue to pursue various measures to ensure the quality of service provision by operators. Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda are a few markets where operators have been served with hefty penalties for poor quality of service. This is expected to spread to other markets and will force operators to invest in improving the quality of services they provide to their customers.

• The commercial launch of LTE services by Movicel, MTC and Emcel is expected to lead the way for other operators in Africa. Several other operators in Africa have already completed LTE trials and are only awaiting spectrum auctions for them to roll out the networks.

• The role of a carrier for the wireless industry• How to address the changing roaming landscape• The IP era: what will IPX and LTE bring as challenges &

opportunities?Daniel Kurgan, CEO, BICS

12.50 Examining the current challenges in roaming strategy for African operators

• Assessing the impact of regulation on IOT’s• Is the next wave of growth coming from prepaid roaming?• Are Smartphones the key drivers for further growth of data

usage?• What is the impact on cloud hosted services on roaming?

In this interactive session, the audience will share experience and ideas

ANALYST VIEWPOINT“The opportunity for roaming in Africa is tied to the available audience for roaming services, which is limited by factors that include national expenditures and the GDP PPP of would-be roamers and travel patterns in the region. On the positive side, Africa’s roamers are biased toward enterprise users who generally have higher disposable incomes and are less affected by price fluctuations.

This characteristic will result in Africa seeing a CAGR of 13.4% in its roaming revenues between 2011 and 2016, according to Informa’s latest roaming forecasts, which is the highest growth rate of any region over this period, albeit from a low starting point.

One of the main challenges facing operators in Africa – and also beyond – is the customer perception of roaming. Issues range through a full gamut of customer emotion from fear of overspend (bill shock) to confusion regarding services (service and pricing transparency). What is universal is the urge to be in control of the roaming experience. The need for transparency is particularly important with promoting the usage of data services.

Although there are still a number of challenges to face in Africa, the potential market for roaming is palpable. The voracious appetite for mobile services in the region will no doubt drive roaming take-up but regional operators can also encourage roaming trends as they occupy a pivotal position in the process.”
