MESSAGE TO THE BELAIR PRIMARY
SCHOOL COMMUNITY
It is with great pleasure and a sense of privilege that I
start my journey with you all as the principal of our
wonderful school, Belair Pr imary. I’m looking forward
to meeting, working and getting to know you all.
Belair Primary has been successful in providing strong
learning outcomes for children and has been r igorous in
the development of its approach to learning. I will strive
to continue this great work by utilising self-review
processes and identifying opportunities to successfully
enhance our school vision;
To develop inquiring, knowledgeable, caring young
people who achieve their personal best and actively help
create a sustainable and peaceful world.
One way of making some new connections with people
is by sharing where you have come from and what you
have been doing in your professional career over the past
few years. I’m sure we’ll discover many common
connections. I started teaching at Lock Area School, a
small rural community on the Eyre Peninsula in the late
80’s. After 3 years at Lock I moved on to Millicent South
Primary School in the South East where I spent the next
four years. My teaching in the country included specialist
teaching in Science & Physical Education R-7, classroom
teaching from year 3 to 7 and a large involvement in
junior sports coaching.
I moved back to the city in in the mid-nineties and spent
the next six years at Happy Valley Primary School. I was
involved in classroom teaching year 3-7,
specialist Health & PE teaching, Middle Schooling and I
had my first opportunity in the role of Deputy Principal
in 1998. The new millennium saw a new start for me as
Coordinator in Health & PE & Student Wellbeing at
Christies Beach Primary School. From Christies I moved
across town to West Lakes Shore Pr imary School where
my role was divided between Deputy Principal and
Coordinator Health & PE & Student Wellbeing. I then
had a short appointment to Highgate Primary School
before taking up the position of principal at Scott Creek
Primary School in 2006. After a wonderful 3 years I
moved to Hahndorf Primary & Preschool as principal for
the next 7 years. For the past 2 and a half years I have
been working as Principal Consultant for the Heysen,
Mount Lofty and Sea & Vines Partnerships. This involved
working across 50 sites, preschool to high school, a
highly valuable and rewarding experience but my heart
has led me back to schools and here I am.
On a more personal note my family t ime is very
important to me and I have 2 wonderful daughters,
currently attending Urrbrae High School. I am a very
keen outdoors person, with boating, surf lifesaving,
camping and fishing taking up a lot of my spare time.
I will be seeing you around the school, please come and
say hi and introduce yourself.
Warm Regards
Rob Houston

NEW STUDENTS
A special welcome to the new students and their families
who started at Belair this week.
Year 3: Edie C
Year 4: Elena M
Year 5: Layla E
Year 6: Jordan C
NAPLAN
You may be aware that NAPLAN is moving online. This
means moving NAPLAN from the current paper-based
tests to computer-based assessments. The transition to
NAPLAN online will commence from 2018.
States and territories determine when their schools
commence NAPLAN Online. Moving NAPLAN online
brings many new opportunities for students and teachers
that are limited or not possible with paper-based tests.
Belair Primary has been selected to take part in NAPLAN
online in 2019. To prepare both the school infrastructure
and to ensure that students are able to access the test we
will be taking part in a school readiness test during weeks
5 and 6 this term.
The test will not be marked or scored it is purely to assess
the schools readiness to undertake the online testing.
A letter will be coming home tomorrow afternoon
regarding privacy of information for students in year 3-7.
Although not all students will be undertaking the test this
ensures the credibility and privacy of all involved.
If you have any questions p lease feel free to contact the
school. There will be more information regarding the
access of practice tests and the timing of the readiness test
in the coming weeks.
SHOEBOXES OF LOVE
Participation in this activity is voluntary and all items
received will be greatly appreciated.
Suggested items for a Shoebox – Five New “Somethings”
1. Something to Love
2. Something to play with
3. Something to write/draw, with/on
4. Something of personal hygiene (no liquids)
5. Something to wear
If you wish to contribute, please send individual items or
a collection of items (in an A4 size shoebox) to Sharon in
the Resource Centre or to the front office by Fr iday 28th
September (last day Term 3).
CANTEEN NEWS
Welcome back everyone I hope you all had
a lovely break. The Canteen is stocked up
and ready to go.
Our lunch specials for this term are:
Tuesday’s: Slurp-a-lot soup $3 a cup and
you can add a bread roll for 50c extra. Wednesdays:
Butter Chicken and Rice $5 and you can add 2 small
poppadums for an extra 20c
We also have some warming items for sale at recess;
students will need to come over to the Canteen to see
what these are as they will vary daily. Some of these
snacks include wedges, ham and cheese subs, chicken
drummies and hash browns just to mention a few! Of
course our delicious Hot Chocolate is also available at
$2, this is served in a cup with a lid to avoid spillages.
Remember that giving the students some money to come
to the canteen is more than just about buying food, they
have to be responsible for their money, make an
independent decision and of course learn some maths
with adding up items or seeing what they can afford all
in a helpful friendly environment. Snacks range from 20c
- $2.
If you are able to help out in the Canteen I still have a
couple of days that I need a helper so please contact me
and I can add you to the roster. All help is very much
appreciated.
Thanks

CONGRATULATIONS ROOM 15
Well done to all the students from room 15 who hosted
the assembly in week 10. All students planned, prepared
and presented the assembly full of excitement and
enthusiasm. The focus of the assembly was NAIDOC
Week's theme, “Because of her, we can!”. The students
celebrated the important contributions that Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander women have made and
continue to make in our communities, their families, our
rich history and our nation.
The students created their own iMovies of significant
Indigenous women, traditional cooking in c lass (damper
and Sop Sop), basket weaving with their buddy class and
their own totems they created. They sang a traditional
Torres Strait Islander song called “Sesere eeye” which was
sung in language. We were also blessed by a
performance by the Festival Choir who sang “Djapana”
by Yothu Yindi.
Congratulations to all the students involved on a creative
and informative assembly.

PASTORAL SUPPORT WORKER
Dear Families,
Welcome back! I hope you had a great break.
I always think of term three as the term that is the least
busy. I don’t know why because it is often the busiest.
I’m sure this year’s term 3 will be no different. If you are
feeling pressure and want someone to talk to, just let me
know. I have an espresso machine .
It’s time for the 40 Hour Famine.
Belair Primary School is once again
supporting World Vision’s 40 Hour
Famine. This will be our 13th year.
The Famine takes place from 8:00 pm
on 17 August to 12:00 noon on 19
August.
The focus for 2018 is on refugees. Globally there are 68.5
million refugee and displaced people - and more than
half are under 18. This year’s Famine is the “Backpack
Challenge.” Students can take up the challenge and
commit to living out of their backpacks with only
essentials for 40 hours. Of course students can choose to
do the traditional 40 Hour Famine where they give up
something important to them for 40 Hours.
You can sign up for the 40 Hour Famine here:
https://www.40hourfamine.com.au/
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
