U.S. that enacted the “separate but equal” status for Black Americans.

•The laws definitely made the situation separate, but not equal.

•FYI: “Jim Crow” is the name of the laws because Jump Jim Crow was a white man in blackface. He would do a song and dance imitating Black Americans.

Scottsboro Trials•TKAM is based on Harper Lee’s

childhood.

•One main issue in the novel is racism.

•The other main issue is Tom Robinson’s trial.

•His trial is parallel to The Scottsboro Trial.

Scottsboro Trial•A trial on March 15, 1931 about nine

boys who were accused of raping two women: Ruby Bates and Victoria Price. (They were prostitutes.)

•They were looking for work and didn’t find any. The women, therefore, got on the train to go home.

•The girls talked with a group of white boys. Later, a group of 12 black men got on the train.

•The black boys started bullying the white boys. They were making the white boys jump off the train.

•3 black boys jumped off the train, so only 9 were caught.

•They were arrested for hoboing.

•Hoboing was a common past time in the Depression. People would jump on the freight and travel to a new city for jobs or an adventure.

•The boys were assigned a lawyer by the court.

•She had gone along with Price, so that they would not get in trouble for sneaking on the train.

•The next trial, 5 years after the incident, had black people on the jury. That way it was equal.

•Haywood Patterson was found guilty, but only got 75 years. He escaped and left for Michigan. He was finally caught in 1950, but he remained in Michigan.

•Ozie Powell was being walked back to prison and stabbed a guard. He was then shot in the head, but survived! The prosecution dropped his rape charges, but he still had 20 years for his assault. He got parole in 1944

Williams, Olen Montgomery, Willie Robeson, and Roy Wright were all set free.

•Clarence Norris got parole in 1946, but left Alabama anyway.

•Andy Wright and Charlie Weems got parole, as well.
