CCPA has graduated well over 650 students since its inception. It has brought hundreds of artists together in collaboration as coaches, educators and trainers. CCPA is one of the most uniquely focused conservatory style training programs in western Canada. Over the years the college has seen incredible growth from its original one year certificate program, which doubled almost instantly to add a second year program. “Company C”, our premiere third year studio Ensemble, was added a few years afterwards. Under the

leadership of Ron Schuster and Darold Roles, the college began affiliations for transferring to full degree programs with other institutions. Having an institution like CCPA in Victoria, national in its scope and ambition, is a rare gateway for emerging Canadian artists, and also a chance for this community to intersect with the country – to develop lifelong nationwide relationships and to expand horizons for all Canadians.

To join the college and be able to build on its legacy is a very rare and significant responsibility that I welcome and take very seriously. I aim to carry on the tradition of creating thoughtful, engaged, creative citizens, who will be advocates not only for their own careers, but for their communities, and view the trajectory of their art as a commitment to the essential need for theatre in our society. I have always measured success in arts education by preparing a student to function both as a motivated self-employed business and an inspired artist whose story telling can better illuminate the human condition. This is a commitment the college has always maintained.

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

At CCPA we are about creating and training emerging artists, but also, ideally, enhancing and speaking into the lives of our students, faculty and team as human beings, and encouraging each of us to bring our best person in to the room, stage, studio, and practice. It is these values and priorities that I believe makes CCPA a leading training institution, and our graduates not only strong artists, but exceptional human beings, primed to leave a mark in the communities they step into following their time here.

I continued to be inspired by the work of our faculty, students, staff, and community of guest artists who invest and speak into the processes and productions of the programs at the college. The artistic & cultural landscape of our industry is ever changing, and that puts demands on us to stay connected to change and expand our values and vision, while also responding to a dynamic body of young artists. We strive to provide a challenging and rigorous, yet safe and inspiring, environment to learn, create and perform in - one that is reflective of the professional industry our graduates aspire to step into.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

We have much to celebrate as this dynamic year comes to a close. For our Managing Artistic Director, Caleb Marshall, it was his first full year in a demanding new role. Under Caleb’s strong leadership, and in partnership with the talented Heather Burns, Director of Education and Programming, the College enjoyed a very successful year.

In January 2019, the Canadian College of Performing Arts received the Oak Bay Acorn Arts Award: this honour brought new light to the important relationship that the College enjoys with its host municipality.

A highlight of the past year was the introduction of a new method for interactive communication with members and supporters. On June 22, the Board and staff hosted a Town Hall at the College. A lively group of faculty members, donors, volunteers, staff, present and former board members and the Founders spent the afternoon discussing the future of the College and the Canadian Heritage Arts Society (CHAS).

We know our priorities for the coming year. We will continue to work to ensure that our students are safe; that they are inspired and stretched

by their work, and that academic standards remain at the highest level.

On behalf of the Board, I want to express our sincere thanks to all of our individual and corporate supporters, volunteers, donors, and audience members. For more than twenty years, your support has allowed the Canadian College of Performing Arts to deliver the highest caliber of professional training to young performing artists.

A year after College alumnus Ryan Nelson Reid wowed theatregoers with his colorful portrayals of Trekkie Monster and other characters in the Alumni Company’s production of Avenue Q, the puppet director took his skills to a new level with the Kitsune Project, a new piece he conceived that signalled a shift in the Alumni Company’s focus to support new work development.

2018-19 saw the inaguration of a new College tradition - the summertime Season Launch Social in and around St. Mary’s Anglican Church’s lovely garden, to whet the appetite for theatrical treasures and new initiatives to come. The Student Welcome Dinner is one of the College year’s most eagerly anticipated events. It’s a chance for returning students to reunite and reminisce, newcomers to be embraced, and for staff, faculty and board members to welcome students. One unforgettable moment? When Company C Studio Ensemble students Joscelyne Tamburri (above left) and Mackenzie Breeze-Bone, after delivering their entertaining welcoming address, inspired the crowd to collectively sing and dance to Matthew Howe’s classic spin on Lady Bump, the 1970s dance hit.

There’s never a dull moment during Orientation Week, and 2018 was no exception. Highlights included the perennially popular scavenger hunt, the wearing of costumes, studio tours, Victoria Cultural Scene presentation, voice and dance placements, the welcome dinner and garden lunch. Incoming Managing Artistic Director Caleb Marshall also presented his inaugural acting workshop, an introduction for the intensive studies to come.

TWELVE ANGRY JURORSThe verdict on “Company C” Studio Ensemble’s Twelve Angry Jurors, the first show of the 2018-19 season was clear.

Under James Fagan Tait’s direction, this triumphant adaptation of Reginald Rose’s 1957 courtroom classic featured a predominantly female cast, bringing newfound relevance to a riveting, naturalistic legal drama that plays out in real time.

It was the bees knees! The College’s staff team pulled off one of this year’s most rousing and fun-packed social events - a Roaring Twenties-themed night out at the Union Club. Students and alumni dazzled costumed supporters with period music and dance, notably the electrifying Charleston performance. Club

It’s a consistently unforgettable experience as students pay tribute each year to those in the military whose sacrifices ensure our freedom with the College’s touring Concert of Remembrance. A tradition that co-founders Janis Dunning and Jacques Lemay began two decades ago as the College’s gift back to the community through performances at parishes, legions and community centres took on a new dimension. An inaugural partnership with the District of Oak Bay made this cherished tradition more accessible with a new public performance presented at the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre in support of local charities.

With the emergence of the #MeToo movement, “Company C” Studio Ensemble’s production of Margaret Atwood’s dark and amusingly subversive twist on Homer’s The Odyssey couldn’t have been more timely. Director Ron Jenkins and Choreographer Laura Krewski took particular pride in how the cast responded to the challenges of a play that has

contributed to Atwood becoming increasingly relevant.

STUDIO ENSEMBLE WITH THE NADEN BAND

Few events in Victoria can get patrons into the Christmas spirit quite like the annual Naden Band Christmas Concert at the Royal Theatre. The 40th anniversary edition, again shining a spotlight on College students whose contributions have been instrumental to the success of this series, was another example of building community partnerships, in this case with both the Naden Band and Salvation Army, an integral part of CCPA’s strategic plan.

The cast, crew and directors of Stage Door and Middletown (Jim Leard and Stuart Aikins, respectively) had their work cut out for them, but it paid off for Year II students whose talents were showcased in these two disparate plays -- the

Depression-era backstage classic and Will Eno’s new stylized existential portrait of life in a fictional small town. Staging these “theatrical treasures” in repertory gave all the students involved the opportunity to bring a character to life.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community engagement remains an essential foundational principle of life at the College. Students frequently volunteer at community events, visit senior’s centres and take the time to hear their stories, and uphold a Christmas caroling tradition to spread joy each December.

The College’s enduring reputation for presenting top-drawer musical theatre productions kicked off last year with the “Company C” Studio Ensemble’s production of Sweet Charity, described by Times Colonist theatre critic Adrian

Chamberlain as a show highlighted by “solid direction [Barbara Tomasic] and choreography [Jessica Hickman] … and a diminutive spark-plug known as Lara Hamburg as an irrepressible dance hall floozy with a heart of gold.” Despite the

most inclement weather since 1996 during its winter run, the production was a near sell-out.

Twenty years after Janis Dunning and Jacques Lemay co-founded this post-secondary training institution, with roots in Charlottetown, PEI, its national scope remains, hence the National Audition Tour that continues each year. DAY OF BRIDGE

One of the most beloved traditions at the College is the Dorothy Gray Day of Bridge fundraiser in honour of the late, legendary volunteer known as the “Daffodil Lady” for her 60 years of service raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. The dedicated philanthropist’s affection for the students prompted her to designate CCPA in 2001 as sole recipient of funds she raised through bridge tournaments and luncheons that continue to this day at the College and feature performances by students.

Mentorship is the backbone of the TD Festival of New Works, the annual festival that showcases projects created by students, giving them the opportunity to take creative leadership and have their voices heard through directing, playwriting, musical theatre, film and other disciplines. Faculty members and other professional mentors help guide students as they bring their new works in progress to the stage in a three-day festival of performances.

Dozens of supporters, donors, students, faculty, and representatives from the municipality attended a special event on April 4 at the College housed in St. Mary’s Anglican Church at 1701 Elgin Rd. This open rehearsal celebrated the College having been chosen as the second recipient of the District of Oak Bay’s Acorn Arts Award, in honour of its contributions to the arts and the community it has called home for 20 years.

The College’s year-end musical is always a hotly-anticipated event, and this year’s production at the McPherson Playhouse – the iconic Broadway musical West Side Story – did not disappoint. Backed by a live orchstra, the show garnered rave reviews, as well as positive feedback regarding its educational value from its cast of 56 students. It underscored the impact of its all-star creative team, including Director Matthew Howe, Musical Director Heather

Burns, Choreographer Sara-Jeanne Hosie and Mercedes Bátiz-Benét, who as Artistic Consultant ensured accuracy and sensitive treatment of the musical’s cultural elements.

Graduation day at the Marriott Hotel for Diploma and Certificate students was at once bittersweet and inspiring. The College re-instated the founders’ tradition of wrapping students in a College scarf, a symbol of warmth, family, and care for your instrument. A new tradition was instituted of welcoming alumni to deliver the Keynote address. Clayton Baraniuk, College alumnus and Artistic Producer for Vancouver’s Electric Company Theatre, shared words of wisdom to graduates surrounded by friends and family.
