To the AGC of America Family:

As I assume my new role as President of the AGC Foundation, I would like to thank Jack Kelley for his past two years of outstanding leadership for the Foundation. Jack’s emphasis on growing the Foundation, in terms of program and financial development, helped make 2013 another exciting and productive year for us. Included among our accomplishments are:

• Completing two more faculty internships in 2013 and approving an additional four for the summer of 2014. Justin Reginato, CSU Sacramento, worked with Swinerton, Inc. and Dr. Hisham Said, Santa Clara University, with Blach Construction in 2013, with rave reviews from their contractor sponsors. In 2014 we look forward to internships involving these faculty members and AGC contractors:

• Publishing the Foundation’s first case study, prepared by a team from the University of Northern Kentucky and Turner Construction, “Ethics in Project Planning and Execution.”

• We are announcing at the 95th AGC convention the award of 133 scholarships for the 2014-15 academic year. The continuing generosity of our long-time donors and the establishment of new endowments make it possible to help these young people with the high costs of their college educations.

• We present awards this year to the winner of the James L. Allhands Essay Competition, Jason Kyle Bailey from Texas

A&M University, and the 2014 Outstanding Educator, Dr. Brad Benhart of Purdue University. The submissions for these awards just keep getting better, and the winners are indeed deserving of honor.

We will continue to emphasize building the Foundation’s endowment to meet the significant need of students for assistance in their education funding. One of last year’s recipients, Adam Leon of California State University, Sacramento, tells us that the additional funds provided by the Foundation made the difference in his ability to work in the industry while finishing school. The students’ needs vary, some requiring the funds to meet their tuition needs and others to enrich their learning experience.

The Foundation’s work continues to promote the cultivation of our future leaders and to recognize outstanding work in the field of their education. That is its mission. We are grateful for the continued and significant financial support by AGC members and firms, the Consulting Constructors Council and AGC of America that allows us to do that. We extend a special thanks to Dan Fordice for establishing the Kirk Fordice Memorial Scholarship Fund this year, as well as Al and Gracie Landes for their second endowed fund with the Foundation, the Al and Gracie Landes Scholarship Fund.

Finally, we extend our appreciation to departing director John Schaufelberger from the University of Washington, whose work on the AGC Foundation/ASC committee that has developed our faculty internship and case study initiatives has been an example of true leadership. We are happy to note that he will continue to be involved in the committee but we will miss his valuable contribution as a director.

WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS

PHILIP DUNN, JR. PE is the Coordinator of the Construction Management Technology Program at the University of Maine, College of Engineering, School of Engineering Technology. He joined the faculty at UMaine in 2003 after nearly a 20 year career with the Maine Department of Transportation. He teaches several courses a semester in the areas of construction methods, estimating, scheduling, documentation, Introduction to CMT, and senior capstone. Phil is also involved with the Associated Schools of Construction Student Estimating Competition and serves on the National Board of Directors.

Phil holds degrees in Civil Engineering, a Master’s in Civil Engineering, a Master’s in Business, and a Master’s in Public Administration. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Maine. He is the faculty advisor to the Student Chapter of ABC and an advisor to the Student Chapter of AGC. Prior to coming to UMaine, Philip Dunn worked for the Maine Department of Transportation in the Construction Division and the Geotechnical section, eventually becoming the coordinator of that program.

Phil is active in both the professional and civic community. He is active in the American Society of Civil Engineers having served as State President and 150th Anniversary Chair. He is on the National ASCE Cold Regions Committee and serves as the secretary to the Programs Committee. He is involved in the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Maine Association of Engineers. He is active in the National Engineers’ Week E Week Expo. He is the Chair of the Old Town Sewer Advisory Board and is a member of the Old Town Planning Board. He has served as President and board member of the Good Samaritan Agency, a social services and adoption agency. He is also very active in the Knights of Columbus. He is the President of the Old Town Boosters’ Club, the high school athletics support service.

MARYANNE AURAY GUIDO was raised in Upper Saddle River, NJ. She received her BS in Mathematics and Economics with a minor in Statistical Analysis from the University of Virginia. She met her husband Tom during her second year in college and, after graduating, married and moved to San Antonio permanently.

Maryanne began her career with USAA as an Actuarial Analyst while studying to complete her Actuarial Fellowship. She also continued to work on her MBA in the evenings at UTSA. After the birth of their first child, Maryanne took a sabbatical from USAA and returned to

school at night to attain her Residential Real Estate license and received a certification in Interior Design from St. Mary’s University. After receiving her ASID designation, Maryanne founded Guido Interiors, Inc., specializing in commercial office, kitchen, and bathroom renovations for the next ten years.

In 1993, Maryanne joined Guido & Companies to assist with business operations, employee training and development, and management. In 2005 Maryanne was appointed CEO and Chairman of the Board of Guido &Companies, Inc. Under Maryanne’s leadership, Guido Construction has experienced dynamic growth and positioned itself in the top tier of South Texas builders. As CEO, Maryanne oversees all Guido Companies including: Guido Construction Company, Inc., Guido Lumber Company, Inc. and Guido Management Services, Inc.. In addition, Maryanne oversees all Client Relations, Business Development, Strategic Planning, Employee and Leadership Development, and Operations.

Maryanne and Tom Guido have been married for 39 years and have four children. They enjoy many volunteer activities in their community, church and industry. Maryanne spends her leisure time biking, practicing yoga, skiing, reading, cooking, traveling, and playing tennis, bridge, golf and drinking great wine!

KYLE PENNINGTON has over nine years in the commercial construction industry. Kyle has experience in interior construction, ground up, public, and federal projects. He’s currently serving as an estimator at Sabre Commercial in Austin, Texas.

Kyle began his career with CF Jordan Construction after graduating from Texas A&M University in 2004. He began in their Dallas office and then moved to San Antonio in 2005. Kyle became deeply involved in the San Antonio AGC’s Construction Leadership Forum, earning their Outstanding Member of the Year award in 2011. He joined Sabre Commercial in

2013. He’s one of five founders of newly formed Austin AGC’s CLC Steering Committee, and is currently serving his final year on the National CLC Steering Committee.

Kyle has been married for seven years. He has a two year old daughter, Lyla, a boy due in June, and an old Labrador retriever. He loves mountain biking, camping, and kayaking around Texas. He’s recently learned that he’s terrible at shooting skeet and playing golf, but enjoys both.

The AGC Education and Research Foundation shall advance and support education in the construction industry and support or contribute to scientific or research projects and programs deemed to be beneficial to the advancement of technological, educational, or vocational expertise in the industry:

DR. BRAD BENHART | 2014 OUTSTANDING EDUCATORAssistant Clinical Professor, Building Construction ManagementPurdue University

The 2014 Outstanding Educator, Dr. Brad Benhart, joined the Purdue Building Construction Management program in 2009. Since that time he has made a significant impact on that program and the construction industry through his dedication to developing future construction professionals. He has focused on superintendent training, healthcare construction, project

management and strategic planning using real-world applications and classroom training.

Dr. Benhart has won numerous awards for his impact on education, including Purdue University’s Charles Murphy Award for excellence in teaching, a prestigious award given to only six of Purdue’s more than 2,000 faculty.

Also providing guidance to his students outside the classroom, Dr. Benhart hosted a study abroad for Global Construction Managers in Saudi Arabia; serves as a graduate instructor and student advisor; and is the faculty advisor for the Purdue Construction Leadership Council (CLC). He is also active in AGC and other construction-related organizations, among them serving as co-advisor for the Purdue AGC student chapter; on the AGC Training and Education (TED) Executive Steering Committee; as a member of the joint AGC/ASC committee to develop industry case studies and the recently launched Faculty Internship program, helping to organize one of the first faculty internships. He is also chair of the AGC Credentialing Task Force; an AGC STP trainer; and a member of the Builders Educational Training Foundation.

One of his former students, Branden Burke, 2012 Allhands Essay Competition first place winner, noted that Dr. Benhart typifies “what it means to be an outstanding educator in the classroom, what a true mentor is to students and alumni, and what it is like to be an inspirational leader in the construction industry.” Burke remembered Dr. Benhart’s final capstone lecture as he looked over the graduating seniors and challenged them to be all they could be, saying “You have the world by the tail. Give it a good shake!”

ALLHANDS ESSAY COMPETITION Jason Kyle Bailey, a December 2013 graduate of Texas A&M’s Construction Science Department, was the first place winner in the 2014 James L. Allhands Essay Competition for his outstanding essay on the topic, “Using Virtual Construction Tools in Pre-Project Planning.” Bailey and his faculty sponsor, Dr. Jose Fernandez Solis, were honored by the AGC Education and Research Foundation at the 2014 AGC Convention.

Bailey was born in Hallettsville Texas and graduated from Gonzales High School in Gonzales, Texas. He moved to the Bryan/College Station area and eventually got a job in land surveying He is currently the Survey Supervisor responsible for the Brazos Valley area for the same company. He and his spouse, Brandi, have been together for over 13 years and have two children.

He graduated from Texas A&M with Cum Laude honors and is a member of Sigma Lambda Chi honor society. He would like to become a superintendent and eventually progress through upper management of a construction firm. He is currently pursuing his Surveyor in Training certification which will allow him to obtain a Registered Professional Land Surveyor certification in Texas.

selects a graduating senior, who is recognized by the AGC Education and Research Foundation with a cash prize and plaque for significant achievement in his or her undergraduate academic career.

MARIA HANNASCH was a dean’s list student recognized as an outstanding senior in her second major, German, and winner of numerous academic scholarships. She was a member of Sigma Lambda Chi, a construction honor society, and Phi Beta Kappa. Hannasch served as president of the student chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association, and as a role model in the Program for Women in Science and Engineering. She was a tutor in German, and a peer mentor in the construction engineering cornerstone learning community. Hannasch stud-ied abroad at the Ganz University of Technology in Austria. She completed three internships

including two at M.A. Mortenson Company, in Minneapolis, Minn., where she is now employed as a field engineer.

Dr. Fernández-Solís proficiency is in lean production theories and practices, sustainability, and integrated processes.

Dr. Fernández-Solís achieved the rank of Vice President, Director of Contract Administration with projects in 37 states and more than 2 Billion in construction, and Director of Integrated Projects with a large regional construction company based in Dallas TX. Dr. Fernández-Solís teaches Interdisciplinary and Commercial Capstone for graduating seniors, Sustainable Construction practices for graduate students and Lean Construction for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Dr. Fernández-Solís is the recipient of the Tom Regan Interdisciplinary Prize, a Faculty Senator for the College of Architecture and member of Aggie Honors Council at Texas A&M University.

FACULTY INTERNSHIP INITIATIVE HITS ITS PACE“This program is a slam-dunk!” –Justin Reginato, associate professor at California State University, Sacramento Construction Management and AGC Education and Research Foundation Faculty Intern with Swinerton Construction, summer of 2013.

Dr. Reginato and Dr. Hisham Said, associate professor, Santa Clara University, faculty intern with Blach Construction Company (BCC), gave the AGC Foundation’s Faculty Internship Program high grades for the experience it provided them and the network of colleagues they had established by the end of their work.

“I imagine there are a lot of applicants to this program and if there aren’t, there should be,” said Reginato. “It is valuable at any point during your teaching life-cycle.” Reginato worked with Swinerton using 3D scanning to develop accurate as-built drawings to be used in the planning, scheduling and estimating of tenant improvements.

Dr. Said, who split his time at BCC on a construction site as a project engineer intern and in BCC’s main office as a junior

estimator, said, “I finished this internship with a lot of ideas and case-studies to implement in my courses to better mentor and guide my students to acquire the required skills of construction operations management, planning, and estimation. This in turn will have an impact on the larger group of students in SCU by motivating them to seek successful careers in the construction industry.”

Brad Fannin, project manager at Blach, described the benefit to contractors this way: “Having Hisham as an intern was really a mutually beneficial relationship. Blach Construction counts on construction and engineering programs at local universities to produce the future generation of talent. Having a college professor onboard working on real-life issues will benefit his course instruction, which will hopefully trickle down in the caliber of student the university produces and Blach ultimately hires.”

“We want to have an impact on as many students as possible by continuing the education of their professors,” said Bob Bowen, Chair of the Foundation’s Klinger Research Committee. “Our intent with our partners from the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) is for these faculty to bring their experiences back to the classroom where they will benefit the students coming into the industry.”

The program completed its third summer in 2013, having sponsored a total of five interns since 2011. Faculty from the Wentworth Institute, Purdue and the University of Oklahoma has participated, working with AGC contractors such as Bowen Engineering, J.E. Dunn and Pepper Construction. Four new internships have been approved for the summer of 2014: • Amr Kandil, Purdue University, Bowen Engineering • Tarek Mahfouz, Ball State University, Barton Malow • Sinem Mallaoglu, Michigan State University, Granger Construction • Patrick Suerrmann, US Air Force Academy, Swinerton

INDUSTRY CASE STUDIES BECOME AVAILABLE IN 2014A team from Pittsburg State University with J. E. Dunn Construction and TDIndustries, Inc. of Dallas, TX was selected for their proposal on lean construction practices for the third case study commissioned by the Foundation. The Foundation’s first case study by a team from Northern Kentucky University and Turner Construction, “Ethics in Project Planning and Execution,” is now available through the AGC bookstore. Copies of the case study may also be found at the AGC Foundation booth at the annual convention. The second case study, on the topic of bid day ethics, written by a team from the University of Arkansas in cooperation with Nabholz Construction Services, is in the final draft stage and is expected to be published this year.
