A New Leader for Age Concern New Zealand
Age Concern New Zealand is to have a new Chief Executive. Robyn Scott has been
appointed to take up the position at the end of April.
Robyn has fifteen years leadership experience in the community and voluntary
sector including 10 years as CEO of Philanthropy New Zealand and an earlier career
in the education sector. She is moving from her current senior role in the Commis-
sion of Financial Literacy and Retirement Income.
“Robyn’s demonstrated leadership skills, strong relationship management and
strategic and financial acumen will be of great value to the organisation as we
continue to bring older people and their issues to a greater level of New Zealand’s
consciousness and to build our service provision”, National President Evelyn Weir
said today.
“Robyn also has the ability to lead the organisation in a significantly changing social
and economic environment”, Mrs Weir added. “Age Concern expects to play a lead
role in how, as a society, New Zealand responds to an ageing population and tackles
issues such as older people’s well-being, health care, social support and retirement
income.”
As the new Chief Executive Robyn will be working with the Board, staff and the Age
Concern network to ensure the organisation remains well positioned to represent
the interests of a growing group of New Zealanders and to help shape the environ-
ment for current and future generations of older people.

Our Mission: Age Concern promotes wellbeing, rights, respect and dignity for older people.
Our Vision: An inclusive society where older people are connected, supported, empowered, celebrated and respected—Age
Concern is the lead organization making this happen.
MATTERS TO THINK ABOUT
Our AGM will be on Thursday 26 June. This is a time
we report to you the members and get your directions
for the following year. We have two matters that need
your attention, one is a change to the Constitution
and the other the election of officers. Both are con-
nected. The eight Board members serve for two years
and each year approximately half are up for re- elec-
tion. This year four members are eligible for
re-election and I am pleased to say all are willing to
stand for another two years. This is very pleasing as it
has been a strong board that has performed well.
I have been Chairperson for four years and have
enjoyed the job, but I will be standing down as Chair
although I am still available as a board member. I think
it is important to rotate this position so we use every-
one’s skills and keep new ideas flowing.
The members up for re-election are:
Angela Scott
Debra Jager
Ron Scott
Adrienne von Tunzelmann
A new chairperson will be nominated from this group
and stand for election at the AGM.
A problem can arise if the most suitable chairperson
was not in the group up for re-election. So we will be
asking you to vote on a clause change to the constitu-
tion at the AGM. At present the AGM elects a Chair-
person and Vice Chairperson and Board members.
So the Board recommends that Clause 20.4 shall be
deleted and replaced by the following:
“20.4 The Board shall comprise not less than six and
not more than eight persons unless otherwise deter-
mined by the Organisation in General Meeting. The
Board shall appoint a Chairperson and Vice Chairper-
son, who both must be Board members, within one
month of the Annual General Meeting.”
If this resolution is passed by the AGM it then has to be
registered with the Charities Commission before it
comes into force. So it makes no difference to the
election in June, but will apply next year.

BLOKES DAY OUT
Hi, Red here.
Hi, Red here.
Z Blokes Day Out went to the Classic Car Museum In
Hamilton for our April journey in 2014.
Ewen and Gus made a welcome re-
turn along with fellow veterans Tony,
Vern and Doug. We had two newbie
Blokes Alec and Jim and we headed
once again to Z Bethlehem for our
sponsored Coffee and muffin. Thank
you Z, Heather, Sonia and their Newbie Debbie.
Thanks so much to the Z team for their patronage. The
BLOKES love your team spirit and friendliness almost as
much as your wonderful coffee and muffins.
Then over the Kaimais we went.
The museum was a beaut. The range of cars and the mock
garage along with the myriad of displays took the BLOKES
back a few years and most of them had a drive of a fair few
of them back in the day. Alec, who has seen most of the car
museums in the country reckons it is up there with the best.
The juke box café is wonderful as well and we can all rec-
ommend a trip over there.
Then as BLOKES do we
headed off to the Good
George for a splendid lunch
and sampled their wheat
beer. Not too shabby.
We have two trips planned for
MAY. The first is on Tuesday
the 13th. Mighty River Power
have heard about our trip to the Trustpower Atiamuri dam
and they think they can do one better. They have lined up a
bit of maintenance at the Whakamaru dam and hope to
have a generator opened up so we can see inside. There is
a few OSH things for this trip and no one with a pace maker
can go on site, we must have fully enclosed shoes and there
are a fair few stairs so we must all be capable walkers. I’ll
find somewhere interesting for lunch.
On Thursday the 22nd of May we head stay local and I’ve
arranged for a revisit to the TEL highway between Papamoa
and Te Puke to see how they have progressed since we last
had a visit where we were the first private vehicle to park on
the new Kaituna Bridge. Lets see what they can come up
with this trip.
The rest of the trips planned this year are interesting too. In
June I have just about finalised a visit to a local motorcycle
museum which is not normally available to the public without
invitation. The power of Z BLOKES is starting to get out
there. July takes us up to the Coromandel to visit the Driving
Creek Railway so keep watch on the Age Concern
Newsletters to find out when and where.

Library Corner
One of the roles of the library which we really enjoy is supporting local talent. In May we will be showcasing local authors and encouraging new ones. So if you have thought about writing your memoirs, or a good yarn, then the session on 14th May at 12.00-1.00 pm called Getting your book out there may be what you need to get you motivated.
The majority of local authors are writing for children, but here are some adult writers you may enjoy:
Lance Morcam (thrillers)
Sue Emms (women’s stories)
Ian Clarke (mainly mysteries)
You will find more on the website of local authors’ co-operative Oceanbooks http://www.oceanbooks.co.nz/ You can buy direct, or see if the library has them. Some are print and some are e-books. You can also find out about more local authors at http://www.taurangawriters.org.nz/
There are also some great local short stories and photos on Tauranga Memories at http://tauranga.kete.net.nz/en/site This library history site is attracting attention from round the world, especially the sections on Rena, Remembering War (WWI and II), and Gate Pa. The library is heavily involved in city events to mark the 150 year anniversary of the battle. At least 40 classes have booked in to take part in a programme about Gate Pa. One of our children’s librarians, Debbie McCauley, has also written a children’s book about the battle called Taratoa and the Code of Conduct, which has already sold several hundred copies. The book has been illustrated by her 15-year-old daughter Sophie.
The best-known of our local authors for children is of course Lynley Dodd. Creative Tauranga’s fund-raising to put the much-loved characters from the Hairy MacLairy series on the waterfront in bronze, has nearly reached its target, but needs more donations to get them all out there. You can see the first statue completed - Bottomley Potts - at the Creative Tauranga showroom in Willow St. The bronzes
are wonderfully lifelike and true to the story. I’m looking forward to showing my 6-year-old grand-daughter when she comes to NZ on holiday.
