Summary: All matter is made of atoms. The protons and neutrons are the two particles that make up the nucleus. The protons are the positive particles and the neutrons are the neutral particles. The number of protons can be found by the atomic number. The neutrons can be found by subtracting the atomic mass and the atomic number. The electrons are found around the nucleus and are negatively charged. Finally, elements are pure substances found on the periodic table. Examples are Carbon, Gold, Tin.

Atoms
1. What particles make up an atom?
2. What are two differences between a proton and an electron?
3. Describe a neutron.
1. The protons, neutrons and electrons make up the atom.
2. The two differences between the proton and electron is that the proton is positively charge and is located in the center of the atom. The electron is negative and is located on the rings outside of the nucleus.
3. A neutron is a neutrally charged part of the atom. It contains the positively charged particle protons and the neutrally charged particle neutrons.
1. If I knew that there were 5 protons in the atom, what element would I be looking at?2. Is CH4 a compound or an element? How do you know?
A: 1) I would be looking at Element B or Boron. 2) It is a compound because you cannot find it on the periodic table and it is a combination of Carbon and Hydrogen.
