The recent email group posting by a neighbor, informing us about three vehicles scraped by keys (or something similar) is just what we need to alert the neighborhood to a problem. This type of damage may never appear on a police crime report for our area, so a posting on the email list could be the only way we will learn about a minor, but annoying crime.

I’m hoping that alerts like this one will prompt everyone to watch for such activity. It’s also a good reason for everyone reading the newsletter who is not on the email list to browse over the internet to:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/mckenneyhills/info

and click on the purple “+ Join Group” button, or email

[email protected] and request an invitation.

Fortunately, the police reports have not specified any serious crimes in the neighborhood for some time.

President’s Corner I’m keeping this short due to all the great submitted content.

Thanks again to all volunteers. We still need more people to help out with managing the yahoo email group, and signs for the community, and with the newsletter distribution and editing.

I hope to see you at upcoming events listed on the calendar. Donate to our civic association or to Carroll Knolls Local Park if you are able and so inclined.

Enjoy springtime while you can and have a great summer!

Cabras Pastando En Glenwood Llaman La Atención.

Carroll Knolls Local Park Update

Carroll Knolls Local Park (CKLP) advocates, wearing “Carroll Knolls Local Park” t-shirts identifying their cause, attended the County Planning Board’s Capital Improvements Program (CIP) public forum last April.

Non-profit Green Spaces on Georgia’s Beverly Sobel spoke first, thanking the board for establishing the land as Legacy Open Space in 2012 before pointing out that, while the green space is nice, it lacks formal park amenities. She and Plyers Mill Crossing resident Judith Furash both mentioned the area’s extreme population density, that Georgia Avenue is too dangerous to cross to reach Evans Park, and that a playground and sport court or field would benefit children in the community greatly. Randy Scope of Carroll Knolls then jokingly pleaded for prioritizing funding for the park to “save my yard!” from hordes of children using it as a de-facto play-ground in lieu of other options. Complete with tongue-in-cheek photographs of his eroded lawn with CKLP in the background, this made our advocacy a much more memorable part of the long evening.

Concluding CKLP’s advocacy, civic association (MH-CK-CA) president Vince Bradley spoke of matching investments.

He listed MHCK’s many park devotions, including the years of legal actions by residents of MHCK-CA regarding the property, that its formation in 1994 was motivated by a desire to protect its green spaces, that it has a significant number of registered county Weed Warrior residents, and that it holds park cleanups an-nually.

The Department of Park’s next step involves several work sessions with the Planning Board on the Pro-posed Parks’ CIP, developing the Planning Board’s November proposal to the County Executive and Council. The County Executive will release their final Capital Budget and the six-year CIP in January 2016.

Our next step is to convince the planning board that our park should be put on the list and moved up in priority. An online fundraiser has been set up. If you would like to contribute, all donated money will be allocated for the park, minus administrative fees from the online site.

A facebook page has been set up for the park at www.facebook.com/carrollknollslocalpark.

The fundraising site is http://www.gofundme.com/CarrollKnollsPark.

April Members Meeting Spotlight: Chesapeak Natives

The April 28, 2015 members meeting began with an excellent presentation by Dr. Christopher Puttock, Executive Director of Chesapeake Natives, Inc.

First, Dr. Puttock spoke of Chesapeake Native’s work. At Mt. Airy Mansion, in Rosaryville State Park, the organization has a demonstration garden, green house, and hothouse, and sells perennials and woody plants. At Pope’s Farm, in Gaithersburg, additional plants are grown. The organization relies on a dedicated group of volunteers, and new volunteers are always wel-come.

Dr. Puttock showed slides of many Chesapeake na-tives that work well in the garden. Plants require watering the first year, but need little care thereafter. A garden of natives takes five years to mature. He advised planting densely as the fullness will look good and keep down weeds, and you can thin it out later.

Many Chesapeake natives are host plants to butter-flies and their larva. Mature butterflies dine on many types of flowers, but each type of butterfly must use

a specific species for their larva to feed on – mon-arch larva and milkweed are the best known pairing. Many natives, such as cardinal flowers and trumpet honeysuckle vine, attract hummingbirds . Also of special interest is the brown-eyed Susan. It is hardier and longer-lived than more commonly-known black-eyed Susans, and its offspring grow tidily around the parent plant.

The Chesapeake Natives’ Mt. Airy Mansion Green-house is open for plant sales by appointment on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from the sec-ond weekend of April through the end of October. The organization’s website lists over 80 varieties of plants for sale. Contact Dr. Puttock to make an ap-pointment: [email protected] or phone: (202-262-9773). For additional information, Dr. Puttock recommended the US Fish and Wildlife Ser-vice publication: Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping; Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Spring Park Cleanup

The spring cleanup was well attended by 27 hard work-ing volunteers who spent a combined total of 80 hours picking up trash, clearing invasive plants, and installing some new shrubs and perennials near the Brunswick entrance to the park. Thanks to all who participated to help make our park a more beautiful and ecologically beneficial place to visit.

Glenwood Goes to the Goats

Nearly 30 new short-term neighbors moved in recently near Glenwood Pool to help clear our overgrown bush nearby – goats!

The herd arrived in early May and stayed onsite for several weeks to eat the invasive vines and other plants threatening trees and other vegetation along the pool’s property edge. Goats are considered an environmentally friendly alternative to pesticides in removing unwanted plants. For board members at the pool, a privately run club in the heart of McKenney Hills, choosing them was a no-brainer.

“The alternatives to goats are more expensive, louder, less interesting, less environmentally sustainable and produce undesirable emissions. Plus, goats are just plain cool,” Glenwood Vice President Christopher Ginter said. “To many passersby, the goats are seen as a new-fangled solution to weed control but in reality they are among the oldest solutions known.”

The roughly 25 goats were “rented” from Green Goats, an operation run out of Prosperity Acres, a farm in Southern Maryland’s Calvert County.

A week before the pool’s opening weekend, owner Mary Bowen was moving the portable, electric fence that kept the new neighbors from making themselves too at-home in the area and fielding questions from a number of curious onlookers.

“Everybody who has stopped us when we have been here has been extremely positive,” Bowen said. “They loved the idea … as they’ve stopped us, they’ve just been fasci-nated with watching what the goats are doing.”

One repeat young visitor, who was not much bigger than the goats, remarked: “I just like seeing them.”

The goats, a mix of ear-less LaMancha dairy breed and floppy-eared Boer breed from South Africa, ranged in age from 9-month-olds to 8-years-old.

“When you’ve got vegetation like this, what’s happen-ing is the invasives are choking out the natives,” Bowen said. Clearing it out gives the natives another chance to flourish, she added.

And unlike birds that eat plant seeds and spread them, goats process and digest the seeds so invasive don’t replant, and their manure naturally fertilizes the area, ac-cording to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Pool officials had been trying for two years to tackle the overgrown on their acreage before finally settling on the goats. And while the board has not decided if they’ll use them again, the project has sparked a new focus on the property and how it interplays with the neighboring land, including McKenney Hill woodland.

“The plan is both short- and long-term: we hope to be good stewards of our land, to be good neighbors, and to be better able to envision alternative ways that we might use our property in the future,” Ginter said.

Mr. and Mrs. Ross with sons Mike and Paul moved to Darrow Street in 1952. Most of our relatives in Eastern Europe did not survive World War II. Paul Ross contin-ues to live three houses from the original Ross home.As I read the recent McKenney Hills Newsletter, and especially the article about “Darrow Street Cookies”, a strong memory of McKenney Hills Elementary School emerged.

In the mid-1950s, Mrs. Ross was the cafeteria man-ager of that school. Upon starting that job she found a dozen large unopened containers of peanut butter. As a youngster for one year I helped Mom bake thousands of peanut butter cookies on Sunday afternoons. By selling those cookies for a penny apiece Mrs. Ross was the only MCPS cafeteria manager who turned a profit.

To this day, sixty years later, whenever I smell peanut butter cookies I am overwhelmed with emotion. I am profoundly thankful for living in this neighborhood and having baked school cookies with Mom.
